Are Sony's PS3 firmware updates morphing into glorified publicity stunts? It's a question worth asking. well MS is a software company so them not releasing many bug fixes isn't really that surprising.

Just like Sony is a hardware company so their hardware being uber reliable isn't that surprising.

Picking between the two, I'd take a firmware update any day of the week over faulty hardware. I lose maybe 10 minutes of play time during the update (and that's assuming I want to play games but can't because of the update) while MS takes 2 to 4 weeks to repair 360s.

M$ is not releasing a frequent updates on 360 but are you guys not using windows? the damn thing got new updates and bug fix almost every day! I don't expect people to go moaning about it because M$ developed it and they should do the 'maintenance'! There are alot of things they could change with PSN and making it easier to interact and chat with fellow players much like the NXE.

Cross voice chat would be the first thing on the fix it list if I was a PS Dev at Sony. Screw the video game chat for another year and release a ordinary voice chat so people can start having fun all the time while loged on PSN.

Of course it would be hard to find the resources to get the voice chat running on while gaming but IMO there must be some free space on the SPU's left for voice chat or the video RAM.

Even if it gave minor framerate dips at some points when alot happens on screen I would still implement it because it is OPTIONAL to use. You can't complain that your framerate dips and then still use voice chat because it is self inflicted.

But wishing gets old and Sony is taking thier sweet old time as usual.

I think people are missing the point on the article, it isn't about getting new features. He is talking about how POTENTIALLY frequent firmware updates increase instability that require additional firmware updates to fix.

Anytime you update your firmware, you risk the issue of bricking your console. Firmware updates should be rare and be tested well...

I don't mind new features, but I do mind the increased risk of bricking my console. On another note, in most cases you don't have to update to enjoy your PS3 though... so the point is somewhat moot.

I start up the ps3, begin the update, turn on my 360 and play a match of team death match on cod4, shut off the 360 and begin to play resistance 2 on the ps3 after the update is installed. Good way to pass the time if you ask me. But honestly I don't see myself using the new photos feature in this update. system stability I'll take, considering I still freeze during Fallout 3. btw, awesome game

Every time there is an update I download it in anticipation, is that wrong? No. There is nothing wrong with updates that improve a system and add cool new features. Remember the trophy update. Microsoft has so many updates for Windows they actually call it Update Tuesday and at least once a month Microsoft releases all kinds of updates and security patches. I see no problem with Sony doing this.

I have a bigger problem with Microsoft and them doing no updates for Windows Vista. I bought Vista Ultimate which was expensive. They promised all kinds of extras for anyone who bought it. The PS3 isn't just a gaming console. It's a multimedia center. The PS2 was exactly the same thing and so was the PS1. The PS1 was able to play music CD's on days you didn't feel like playing games. The PS2 was used for DVDS and PS1 games, not to mention music CDS. The PS3 does that and even more than it's predecessors.

I agree with the cross game chat. I have been calling for this from day one but your way off with the rest of your post. These additional features\options along with games are enticing gamers to purchase PS3's.

I primarily use my PS3 for games but I WANT it to be able to cope with what ever I use it for, be that watching Bluray movies or watching movies I've downloaded. Listening to music. Wireless Streaming of movies from my PC to my PS3 etc.

If your techno savvy and want a console that will do everything buy a PS3. If all your tech know-how can manage is slipping a disk into a tray and you don't mind sub HD graphics this Gen., buy a 360 or a Wii.

the problem for some people(didnt bother reading the article though) is not so much whats in this update, but this update coming out now means at least a few more months before the next one. So instead of speculation and hoping in game chat is right around the corner, everyone knows its a much longer wait even if its in 2.7 because 2.7 wont be here until at least spring. as good as new features are(im always welcoming new features) i do think this photo album should have been one of the many add ons and not the main feature for a FW update. Personally i dont think in game chat will be out until the end of this year at least anyway, probably not until 3.0 or after. until then i would really like an unread message icon with the number of new messages, written on the left of the date and time.

whats with everyone saying about custom avatars not being able to work, MS has custom avatars and it works fine. it must work fine because we dont read about names getting booted for having sexual avatars, and we do hear about people getting banned for having sexual names, which is not on ps3, so custom avatars is needed and would work fine, how about sony bans you for 24 hours if you have a photo like that and they make that rule clear from the get go? i hate the kiddie avatars we have now and want to use my own pics.

This is exactly why microsoft is winning this console right now event though the ps3 has the best games. They made it a video game console first. Sony made the ps3 a media console first, with its x2 disc read speed bluray, no headset, no rumble, terrible networking, slow downloads, missing voice chat in alot of games online, but yet they have enough time to keep on uprading its divX support? Nope, they're not getting old. There's a bugfix in the latest patch that I'm sure plenty of people will thank Sony for giving them now rather than waiting, say, 3 months for an update with more content. So :/ at the notion it's a publicity stunt. If anything the NXE on 360 was a publicity stunt. It was like Jesus returned, the way the media was talking about the update. Sony, on the other hand, releases these small updates and they go mostly under the radar of the mainstream.

I say he's fearful, and a bit upset by the fact that he can fold his arms and be as smug as he wants, but it doesn't change the fact that he's probably got a 2000 dollar gaming rig that's being outdone by a 400 dollar console (that's currently out-performing everything else as well).

xbox360 makes gamers feel like part of a vip club for paying for online which negates that special feeling a pc gamer has for spending way too much money for a stupid video game that can also be found on xbox360.

I download divx movies for free from the internet. Hey! I can use a usb at work to download a movie and bring home and upload it to my ps3. how awesome is that? I even tranfer the movies over to my psp! Im not even the a computer savvy person and i find this easier than downloading songs from itunes. Thats just me though, lol.

The gap between computers and consoles is getting smaller, and now since console manufacturers can easily and add more and more functionality to their products through updates, it's suddenly a bad thing? When does getting free monthly firmware updates that add more value to your console negative in any way? Hell, I get excited to see what features are being added when I have to get my updates. It's FREE after all.

I know that when you download these updates, you can click a little option box to tell your ps3 to automatically turn off. So if the time it takes is a problem, update, and go to bed.

Maybe they're just becoming envious by the fact that a $400.00 system is starting to outpace their $2000.00 gaming rigs in gaming performance, and is gaining ground through minor fixes and constant feature addition? For whatever the reason, I don't care, just find a new profession.

Sony's firmware updates add more features to the system the majority of the time, so no they will NEVER get old as long as they keep improving the functionality of the machine.

I for one love some of the FW revisions that have been released so far and I look forward to anther 34+ FW updates that will add even more still.

I use my ps3 as a full multimedia machine (same thing when i bought a ps1 and ps2). I could truely care less for cross game chat (i never used it for the 360). I do not think that they are getting old, I actually like having new features and a constantly evolving system. However, last night the update came during my hard drive upgrade,(320)GB Hitachi now, and I had to update before it would allow me to sync my trophies to the server. Most of the time I wait a couple of days to see if any problems arise, but it is no big deal at all for me.

I think that sony should release a FW where they create a new XMB icon that lead us to APPs on our PS3s as the ones on iphone/itouch. This apps will increase the user experience on the PS3 as they shoul be able to create documents, presentations and other stuff. Its just my way of moving things foward.

Its a quite nifty feature that allows you and a bunch of people to STAY in a voicechat session regardless of the game you play. Sadly it was instantly abused for competitive game cheating as the dead can keep telling their mates where the last opponent is, and can join different teams and effectively unfairly spy that way. MS should change it to honor the competitive restrictions ingame.

Is actually pretty cool. The updated DivX support is nice because I'm sort of an anime hound and I noticed that a few of the .avi files that wouldn't work before without simple conversion now work.

So, I mean, I'm not getting tired of these updates at all. They continue to surprise me and keep my PS3 from being "just" a game console. It really does the job of anything I could possibly hook up to my TV, aside from my HDMI-enabled laptop to watch those HD .mkv file anime.

This is what happened: I was playing warhawk (disc version) when the ps3 turned itself off.
When I turned it back on an YELLOW light appeared for about a second right before the blinking red light.

I had the blinking red light before with no major issues but freezes.

The Yellow light is the real sign of bad things.

Just pay it. The yellow light of doom is for real. Your Hard drive is corrupted and it might have caused your fan to burn out. This is the reason why my ps3 died. I paid it and sent it off to sony. I bought my ps3 at lauch and it too was a 60GB backwards compatable $599.99 system. I kept the receipt and sent it off. The turnaround time is about ten business days. I played the HELL out of that system, so maybe i wore the ps3 out. the make date of my ps3 was OCT. 2006, so yeah, it was old. I took care of my ps3 console like it was the holy grail. The blu-ray cleanings once a week on sundays, and the can of air. Hell, i made sure no dust or dirt got near it. My friend allows his ps3 to stay on for hours and hours. I want to reveal his name but all i can say he is one of the top fighting game players in the U.S. One hint is that he won the Mortal Kombat 2, 3, and 4, was well as MKDA world tournaments. He is also top in MK vs. DC. Back on the subject, every friend i have just treats their ps3 like trash. Their Playstation 3's work great. Sh!t happens, pay the fee, and move one.

P.s. i play my xbox more because of the YLOD, mainly multi-platforms and the exclusives for the ps3 is how gaming goes for me. either way my xbox has died twice, and i bought that at lauch. so, d@mned if you do and d@mned if you do not.

I'd rather have free updates than premium upgrades; and wouldn't it be better to to have a system that adds new features than one that never gets new features? To have a system that already has everything is impossible. There will always be something new. To this respect, I've noticed this isn't the first complaint I've heard of the issue, but I think the real problem is not the common occurrence of updates, but rather the time it takes for the updates to download and install. Do you think we'd see the same complaints if the updates didn't include wait times? Regardless, I'd rather have the greatest update in the world take as long as it needs to download and install, rather than have no update, which would take no time at all to download and install.

i don't know about you guys, but my PS3 seems to be getting old aswell, and it also feels old for some odd reason, thats why i treat it like a PS2 now (carelessly moving it and stuff), and the only games that i will play this year are next R&C game, Tekken6:BR, Uncharted 2, GOW2 seemed very depressing to me so thats a no for GOW3, and KZ2 looks and plays really good, but its not like am gonna buy the game for the story now am i? mostly on the graphics side, so thats a no to KZ2(but i'll get the demo), and yeah thats it, the rest of the year my PS3 will be OFF don't really care that much anymore (and NO i ain't buying a 360, it's a flipin piece of garbage), oh and in 2010 i'll get GT5, and if thats not out by then, then forget it, i'll just sell my PS3 and then i'll buy a slimPS3 when it comes out 6 yrs from now lol

This really isn't a big deal.. but I do get annoyed if I want to play online but MUST do ANOTHER update first as these updates can sometimes take a while. I do think they are sometimes used as media grabs too. However, the 2.6 update was quick... so I hope they keep it that way.
As i said. Either way, none of this is a big deal.

you also have to understand that most 360 and Wii players are too busy playing all those games, while the average ps3 user has been waiting (and still is) for the past few years, only interrupted by watching the occasional bluray movie.

do require constant updating. they came out with a controller without rumble, etc. etc. etc. things that simply should be standard these days. i was surprised that the ps3 actually was able to play games at launch. i was expecting bluray movies only.

wtf are they on these people? really? Do they not realise that updates are not just fixing bugs that do exist in all software products no matter how hard and long you test, you will NEVER find everything, but also improve and add new features. It's an ever growing console with a vision not just for brilliant gaming experiences but also as a multimedia device.

p.s the updates do not take that long and their policy of releasing all updates in the latest update is brilliant and leads to less bugs. Doing it the PCWorld way we would all have inferior products dependent on constant hotfixes and poor customer service.

PC = Fail IMO.

Anything that improves a service then it's all good, but I think they should limit them. For some crazy reason I can't play LBP with the new frame wire update. I had to erase everything and start all over. Anyone else had a problems like this?

What the author is trying to say is that most of the ps3 updates are old. Yes, its good that they are fixing problems but most of the features are old. Is taking Sony a long time to add features that other consoles already have.

this is the worst freaking article i have ever read. Yea, hate on sony because they actually offer to fix and improve their console as opposed to microsoft who brings a woefully broken and hideous avatar system but nice layout to theirs.

I simply do not get all the sony hate, especially on this when all they are doing is proving they still care about the ps3 and are doing everything in their power to show people they are a better company than suckrosoft.

I really don't care about the frequent updates. The more updates the better. Fix the problems and give me the added features. That tells me Sony is being proactive in keeping the system running smoothly and up to date with the various features available. All they are trying to do is keep their word and make the PS3 a media center. If they weren't pushing these updates, the fool would be writing an article complaining about how they don't do it enough. "Forget about it"
