Sony will temporally fix out of warranty PS3's without any costs

PS3-Sense writes "A few weeks ago the Dutch program called Radar has run a special about the PS3, and claimed that after a year, the Blu-ray drive of the system just stops working. Their evidence for this claim is that they have received 300 reports of this from PS3 owners in the Netherlands.

Now, a few weeks later Sony Computer Entertainment Benelux announced that because of the special in the dutch tv program, they will temporally fix PS3's, which don't have warranty anymore, with broken Blu-ray drives without any extra costs. They also claimed that they won't expand the warranty from one year to two years in the Benelux."

all i know, is that sony's customer service is awesome, they just replaced my 60GB (ps2 backwards compat) ps3 with a new one (after it overheated after letting it run for 3 days lol) OUTSIDE warranty :) which i find awesome of them.. took them a while to do so (coz 60GB isn't produced anymore) but i have a new 60GB with PS2 backwards compat (killzone works :) ) so i aint complaining :)

That's good Sony is stepping out the plate on this problem which has been the most frequently reported problem out there for the PS3. When the PS2 had this problem(which mine and my cousin did) they didn't do squat! Both SOny and M$ have taken care of their customers in providing better warranties for their consoles.

When my first Ps2 went out cause of a disc read error, I called Sony about it and they said to send it to Farmington hills, Michigan and it would cost me $140. I figured it would be a waste to spend so much for a repair and just bought a new one every time it happened.

I did the same thing with the 360. When my launch went out, I called MS and they told me I would have to pay for a repair, so I just traded it in like in the past and paid the difference. My second 360 started acting funny after a year. I got paranoid and traded it in before it broke. Now the one I got just got the three lights.

I guess there's just some kind of bad luck for a second system made by a company. I went through 5 ps2's and 3 360's.

I think my issues with the Ps2 are the reason's I haven't bought a Ps3 yet. And I think my issues with the 360 might create the same problem for the next MS console.

but the issues you pointed out were not huge issues. Simply taking care of my NES worked for me as I knew cartridge slots in general are prone to breaking for conspicuous reasons like dust. My point was on a whole nintendo are the only company around today that has not had a fuss made about the lack of reliability of its products.

For sony the ps2 were tough as many people complained of issues such as disk drives. My only failure was a ps2 sadly. However credit to sony they have cleaned up these issues with the ps3.

Microsoft - well I don't think I need to say much on this that hasn't been done to death. At least their hardware revisions are designed to cure the problems so props for that.

Are you delusional?...If you are referring to Microsoft, "fixing" would have required the units to be "fixed" so that they don't break again...not have to be returned 3 or 4 times...If they had truly believed that they had "fixed" RROD, then they would have given a lifetime warranty instead of 3 years for RROD. Not only to show that Microsoft actually believed that they had "fixed" the problem, but also to rid the fear that comes with buying a 360 and instill confidence in the consumers.

In other words...the only reason they fixed these units is because it was brought to the public's attention. So you are going to tell me that they did not already have these problems on record in their customer support database, but now since it becomes public they decide to fix them all of a sudden. Also notice the term "temporarily" which means they will fix them this time (to make the story go away), but after that too bad. If there are any instances in other regions will they get fixed too?....or will there need to be tv programs in those areas also to warrant action.

Sure this was the right thing to do (after coaxing) and it is not to the same level as the previous RROD issue, but Sony is a corporation just like the rest....and like the rest they just covering their a$$e$ with this one. 300 unit repairs is a small token to pay to try and make yourself look like the white knight your not...this is PR NOT kindness.

is extremely consistent with their hardware as well. The ONLY problems I've had is that my N64 failed only because it was refurbished and had moisture, And one of my Wii-Motes strangly caused any set of AA batteries I bought for it to decrode. That simple fix was to replace it with a new set.

All in all I have no qualms with nintendo & sony in terms of reliabilty

if it's a defect then they should repair it for free, say what you want about MS but I have yet to buy a second model, yes I have had problems but so far all replacements have been free of charge, the 1st couple of times was because of the noise, IMO MS did the right thing by allowing installs to lower the noise because Xbox-360 has been a real noisy console, but anyway they replaced them, and yes I have had the RROD and also the E74 error but so what I now have the new jasper model with no extra cost.

PS3s overall failure rate is well below the industry standard of 3%. the failure rate percentage is an overall total percentage but with the 360 it pertains to every single 360 console since it is a design defect. The 360 has a multitude of problems which probably still leaves it's failure rate at above 10%+. MS didn't do all they could do. Doing all they could do would mean a recall and redesign of the console. All they've done is reduce the RROD but what about the disc scratching, E74, cheap headphones, etc. The overall package is still lacking in quality 3 years later. They are a joke.

Well, I come from the Netherlands and I've seen the show. What was said in the show was : Sony has a remarkable low failure rate, why don't they just fix these few broken PS3's and be done with it. Now it costs them their reputation.

Also, in the Netherlands shops will say : You have a one year warranty, but the Dutch law protects their consumers. According to Dutch law, a shop/manufacturer should give warranty on the expected duration of usage of a product, in the case of a PS3, 3 years was mentioned.

By the way, I don't know why Sony doesn't give 3 years warranty, since the PS3's will hardly break down.

I have a launch 60 gig I bought on the 17th of 2006 and have loved it, still do, but mine crapped on me not even three days ago. It started out with BD movies just freezing up after about twenty minutes in but now my games won't play (only DL'd ones). I have treated that console like GOLD. I have my own game room in my house that only has my gaming rig and a lazy boy. There is no smoking in my house and I dust all of my equipment regularly, nothing crazy but at least once or twice a month with a micro-fiber.

My point is Sony told me I have to pay $150.00 for a fix. This is not my fault, I take my hobby seriously and this error is not from my neglegence it's faulty hardware PERIOD! From what I've read scanning some forums I'm not alone. I hope it's isolated but come on I will have paid over $750.00 for 26 months of owning a PS3 that's not fair dude :(

I got the yellow light error. Called up Sony. the nice lady said she was sorry to hear the console had died and took the serial code and then told me I could have a replacement. Mine was a launch console and it gets replaced a year out of warranty for nothing. Thats what I call service. Maybe us ps3 owners should have had a console with a failure rate like the 360. Then we could have had an extented warranty period.

Oh and it had my copy of Resistance 2 in it. They are sending another copy with the console. No proof on my part its in there. Just another copy for free.

The 360 gets 3 years of full warranty, they got it up from 2 year standard warranty.

I had a dying BluRay laser after 3 weeks. One guy I know had a PS3 reading no games after just 3 days. Another friend same problem, he send it in to Sony, and its gone already for 1.5 month. MS returns the 360 from repair within 5 to 10 working days.

The BluRay problem is larger then you want it to be. Quick quick do damage control Sony fanboys!

After the 200 bucks pricedrop of the PS3 Sony started to use cheaper parts to cut the costs. And the BluRay laser dying ain't something new. Remember the PS2 having years of problems with its dying laser just after 10 to 14 months?

Bottom line its that the worst part of the PS3 is the blu-gay it happened to me twice and was replaced the first time for free, but I had to pay for the shipment and the second time that it happened they told me that they can can not replace a part that they already replaced, but this happened withing a year and the warranty it supposed to be for a year. I don't care which console it is. If I can't game then I would be made. Don't defend Sony or M$. What is important is that those companies stand behind their products. I once purchased a brand new Chevy truck it cost around $20K, it broke and Chevy gave me the finger. 15 repairs in 2 years at 25k miles. I will never purchase another GM vehicle in my life. My point is to speak with your wallets, that is the only way big corporations will listen.

I called again and actually got through to a supervisor to no avail. The bit#h was just plain rude.Gave me some stupid car warranty analogy instead of a solution to my problem. I knew this wasn't an isolated event. Almighty Sony needs to own up to their faulty hardware and extend their warranty policy.

No biggie i think those were the earlier bluray drives that went out and i do know that Sony is now using an updated bluray drive on new PS3's. Im not surprised because its a new technology and at least it doesnt scratch discs even when it fails.

While Playstations have had better reliability than the original Xbox and a lot better reliability than the Xbox 360 in my experience I still had multiple PS1&2's due to laser issues.

I held off buying a launch PS3 at $999.95AUD and I am glad I did as a few people I know with launch units have their PS3s die a few days/months after their 12 month manufacturers warranty expired.

And it is far more expensive to pay for repairs to a PS3 then an Xbox 360 at least in Australia and there is no free repair here just ask one of my mates.

after extensive coverage over the xbox 360's high failure rate against the Playstation 3's, they will surely point out that the Playstation 3 hardware fails after a year.
I got my ps3 on September 2007 and it rendered completely unusable last November... naturally sony guarantees the Playstation 3 will last with no faults for a year, except that isn't good enough if it then breaks pretty much straight after the guarantee is over
Hopefully the refurbished playstations that are being sent don't suffer from the same fault
plus I'm still waiting for a replacement disk of LittleBigPlanet which was in my previous playstation 3 at the time it broke

So, common sense would tell us, that the PS3 is "better" than the 360. And naturally, because of that, it should be doing a lot better than the 360 at this point.

ok.....so maybe the world has just gone crazy, but if I remember correctly, the ps3 was under the 360. And the 360 has been outselling the ps3 "2.5 to 1" for the past couple months. And Its overall sales total is much higher too. Crazy world we live in, where something that is complete piece of crap, can outsell the biggest baddest machine out there, lol.

well sony is finally stepping up to the plate about their blu-ray drives -- i wounder what they are going to do --if anything at all about the ones that are affected about the ylod ( aka yellow light of death ) which took the life of a console near me -- and wouldn't get repaired, because sony said it wasn't a big issue -- google it and see how many have had this problem big corp. sony --problems exist dont denie them...( like you did with the ps2 drive )
