Reviews are done by one or two people at most, GOTY is chosen by the entire staff. There are likely people on staff who do not believe GTA 4 or MGS4 are a worth a perfect 10, while Fallout 3 is.

Fallout 3 was good but for a RPG it wasn't very deep and in many cases (such as the subways) suffered from ME Syndrome. I preferred Fable II over Fallout 3.

In the grand scheme of things I would have thought GTA IV, MGS4, COD: WAW, etc would be better contenders then Fallout 3, even the biggest Fallout fan can't deny the issues that plague the game.

I spent more time in fallout than any game this year. Its an awesome RPG and deserves a GOTY award. Of course there was always MGS, Fable 2, and LBP to consider. However, my runner up is MGS. The cutscene in act 3 was the OMG of the year. The game was brilliant for what it did, absolutely brilliant. Fallout 3 had the depth the fun and the atmosphere to pull it off though. In any case Fallout 3 was an excellent game.

On IGN's "Best Of" List, XBox's game of the year was Fallout 3... PS3's game of the year was MGS4 that beat out Fallout 3 on the list... How does Fallout 3 beat MGS4 in Overall then? This doesn't make sense! IGN has got to elaborate.

Fallout 3 is a fantastic game, but I dont think it should have really got GOTY. Its got a really short main quest like, I was so disappointed when I finnished it. Also the lvl cap is way to easily reached. I also would have liked to have seen more towns like megaton, rather than just settlements with people living in abandond houses.

However Im still playing the game for all the sidequests and trophies.

GTAIV is my GOTY.

I believe this is the biggest piece of crap ever. IGN knows that it was either between MGS4 or GTA IV, but they were b!tching about it. Fallout 3 was one of the most half done games last year and it only got the score it did because it was by Bethesda. The graphics were crappy, the game play was crappy, the story was garbage. I would have rather had Wii Music receive game of the year than this garbage. I demand a recount because MGS4 or GTA IV should have won. Metal Gear Solid 4 was my game of the year just so you know. IGN kiss my ass.

I think people are "playing it safe" when they pick the normal MGS4 or GTA4. Fallout 3 lets me do what I want, when I want, and always kept me coming back for more (100+ hours). The main quest may be short, but if you play just that you're missing out on a lot.

I dont get it... Fallout didnt even win the PS3 GOTY yet they give it the overall. It just doesnt make any sense.

Anyways... I prefer MGS4 since it is my favorite game however Fallout 3 is also pretty good so congrats to it.

Excellent choice IMO. It is the only game that I would play hours on end and then dream about playing it some more (literally). The game made me want to explore every corner of it and I dreaded finishing it. Now I am on my third character and still enjoy it as much as I did when I first experienced it. MGS4, Gears 2, R2, L4D, Dead Space, LBP among others were great fun but Fallout (tho far from perfect) won me over within minutes of pressing the start button.

The best way to get most hits would actually be to pick an exclusive.

This thread would then have been 1200 degrees and 500 comments, with fanboys from the "winning side" celebrating the utter destruction of the opposition (because remember that for a game to get goty, it has to be at least a thousand times better than all other games combined), and the losing side calling bias and payoffs.

A display of human brilliance like that never fails to generate silly amounts of hits.

Actually, it is the most superior version. Yes, it crashes often, but it also has the best graphics resolution, controls and it even has mod support that the console versions don't.

Also, you know what else you can do on the PC without DLC? Increase your level cap for extended play.

Anyway, none of this shocks me as much as the fact that Fallout 3 has one of the worst single-player endings of a modern video game -- not to mention the fact that the main quest is incredibly short and relatively linear in its objectives; that's a polarity in itself considering FO:3 prides itself in its open-world, go anywhere gameplay.

Anyone who disagrees with me obviously is either a) a narrow-minded moron who is easily placated, b) a fanboy who can't handle the truth, or c) hasn't beaten the game. If c) is the case, please do yourself a favor and draw out the game as LONG as you can. You'll enjoy yourself a lot more that way.

Well, Bob, if you want to compare certain aspects of the game, why not bring up that fact that acts III and IV of MGS4 were complete and utter crap. Then, while we are at it, lets go back to Shadow Moses and have no explanation as to why there are gekos and the tripod robots everywhere.

Good point, but I never used the fat man...takes the fun and the fairness outta the fights, but, yeah, the fatman is WAY too powerful...of course it shoots mini-nukes, so i suppose it makes sense. But I wont argue that MGS4 wasn't great, because it was superb, but once I got past Act 2 on my next play through, it just got boring unfortunately. It just doesn't have the replay value Fallout 3 has in my opinion.

Fallout 3 is nowhere close to being GOTY. It isn't even a real Fallout game it's just what Bethesda THOUGHT a Fallout game should be (which is essentially a directors cut of Oblivion). This is instantly DQ'd from any GOTY list so IGN's pick for GOTY is basically null.

Actually, FloppyFeet, if you had any clue about what he was talking about at all, you would agree with him.

Fallout 3 was fun, but it sure had a lot of discrepancies between the previous games and itself. Bethesda is known to do this with a lot of games they produce, but because they cram a lot of stuff into a big, open world, most gamers forgive them because they're easily distracted.

I play and enjoy the titles they make, but that doesn't mean I like them as a company.

Agreed. People on this site think MGS4 is the be all end all of games, and massively overhyped it, which ruined it for me, since I could have enjoyed it for what it was, a good game.

People created expectations for MGS4 that could not have possibly been met. That's why I will refrain from reading the articles hyping killzone 2 to godlike status, so I wont be totally disappointed if it is not what I expected it to be, which I personally think in my opinion will be f*cking amazing.

Fallout 3 to me was a game that I never wanted to beat. That is why I try not to play as much as I could. I want to savor every minute of it, which is a lot. It's an amazing game... quite simply amazing.

i am currently playing fallout 3 and it is a very good game, but compared to oblivion, the game is not as good. fallout 3 is the safe pick. metal gear solid 4 is definitly the better game in terms of overall value, but i am also a die-hard metal gear fan. I have both games and fallout 3 was excellent but it turned out like GTA4: it was a big detailed environment, but it suffered from the minor details like stiff animations and buggy events that give you the opposite feeling of immersive.

After i played it for an hour at a freinds house i knew that it wasnt worth the money to buy a ps3 for it because kojima didnt really innovate with the gameplay at all , it was the same MGS that i have always played. The graphics were spectacular and the sound was amazing , but im not going to pay 400 dollars to watch what is essentially a movie

So instead i got on youtube and watched a the MGS4 runthrough with cutscenes in HD

It was really good , it was a fitting end of the series and raiden was kick ass and so was drebins chain smoking monkey

i suppose an hour long gives it a full play test pfft, please... I have recently finished Fallout 3 and that essentially should have had a better story than metal gear being an rpg and all, but nah, no emmotional involvement at all. Fallout is a great game, but not an epic game.

I enjoy the graphics argument too because that is only a small part of MGS4's innovation.

personally i found this beat every game out this year, even MGS4, why, its just so open you dont have to A. play the other games to figure out whats going on. and B. its just so much fun to play and explore fallout 3. a game that came out from left field and won the hearts of a lot of people, and alot of none fallout fans.

I enjoyed 3 different styles of games this year. Games I spent a lot of time on and had tons of fun so for me either could be GOTY. MGS4 just an amazing experience, like nothing I ever played before, R2 had an amazing online experience for me, the SP was ok but its true enjoyment for me was the online MP, and last Fallout 3 which has been just simply fun to play, so many things to do, places to explore, decisions to make, things to sell LOL, it has been a lot of fun. I havent had a chance to play LBP but I am hoping I can get it soon. Too many expenses and little time but Im sure I will enjoy it from what everyone is saying it is an amazing game. But any one of those games for me would qualify as GOTY. Everyone has different opinions but in some cases they are similar. No reason to get upset about it.

yes, as with all of Bethesda's games, this one is buggy as hell. When I made it to Tenpenny Tower, I took a walk outside the whole perimeter of the tower, and out of nowhere, I see Tennpenny's corpse dead on the ground. I didn't kill him, I didn't even have a single conversation with him. He just showed up dead and therefore, killed off all possible event trees with it. And as for The Elder's scroll series? don't even get me started on how much bugs i've seen in those games.

Do you not realise that the 10s GTA4 and MGS4 got were based on the opinions of the ONE person who reviewed them? To get GOTY the decision has to be unanimous amongst the whole team (plus, the original reviewer might have changed their mind). As I see it, GTA4 is too much of a mixed bag, and enjoyment of MGS4 is arbitrary - you either love it or hate it. If your mind isn't too fanboyified, and you can be arsed, read the Eurogamer MGS4 review - it explains this very well.

Anyway, Fallout 3 deserves this. It is an amazing game. There is always the crappy, unnatural-feeling combat (not including VATs), even worse animation and scripting, but the sense of freedom and atmosphere was awesome. Plus there's that Tranquility Lane level. That was genius. I wish they'd done a bit more of that.

I just sold it yesterday. Oblivion smokes fallout 3. I hope Elder Scrolls 5 comes soon. If it was up to me. Bethesda should just be done with the fallout series. Stick with Elder scrolls. Oblivion is one of my all time favorite games.

fable 2 lacked what made the first fable so magical(the combat system)i could not last 40 hours much less 10 hours, i traded in fable 2 for fallout 3 for my 360, gives my ps3 a break for blu-ray and mgo. My fallout 3 was bugged so i had to do the xx lb, rb, xx trick in the hard drive menu to cure it. didn't have any problems with MGS4. fallout is easily a solid B, but anything over that is lies. the game is glitchy, but bethesda still got my $60.

but I really just couldn't get into the whole bleak atmosphere of Fallout. I'm just more of an Oblivion-ish beautiful, lush, fantasy world kind of guy. I don't like playing games that remind me of the world I already live in fifty years from now. Just depressing. I do, however, agree with the guys about Metal Gear Solid 4. Would've been my easy choice for GOTY. Actually, scratch that. I would definitely have to say that LittleBigPlanet has managed to blow me away even more than Metal Gear in a very different way. I would say LittleBigPlanet with Metal Gear as a close runner-up. :)

I guess it depends on your personal taste in games, but to me its not even CLOSE. Fallout 3 hands down. I've logged close to 100 hours in this game and still find new things. The game has best engrossing environment ever.

MGS4 was good the first time through, but i beat it 2 more times and that was it. MGS4 might have had a better storyline (which makes sense, cuz it is essentially an interactive movie), but fallout 3 was the best overall package.

i could play fallout 3 for years and not be bored of it. can't wait for the expansions. epic!

my runners up would have been fable 2, LBP, MGS4, GTA4, Resistance 2 probably in that order.

keep in mind, every1 will have their own opinion, depends on what type of games they like (unless they are fanboys, then they will choose MGS4, lol)

That being said, Fallout 3 is a definite GOTY contender, and I dont think it was a bad choice. I think Gears 2 simply blew everything else out the water, but maybe thats just me....;)

Even without a multiplayer option, I still spend more time on it than any other game I have.

Even with such a short story, it's possible to get about 16 different endings, but that's not what one should be aiming for in Fallout 3. Side quests, freeform quests, random mini encounters, exploring and various other stuff is what makes Fallout 3 such a great game.

Fallout 3 deserves it.
The game is MASSIVE compared to... well any other game that came out in 2008.
I've spent over 100 hours in the game and I still haven't explored everything, and still not a single bit tired of it. Not to mention the mini expansions coming out as well...

As for GTA IV, the game was a pile of junk (apart from the story and voice acting). Seriously, the game was so bad (in my eyes), that I went and traded it in within a week and without completing the game... it was HORRIBLE. Why the hell does he have to walk SO SLOW?! Why is it the game lagging almost constantly? And what's with the cars driving like you're on a frozen moon?! Crappy lock-on system as well... God it was awful. I sure hope Saint's Row doesn't go down that path, trying to make it "realistic". foisdhfuisdfhsiduf I'm so pissed about GTA IV ;<

Personally I don't think Fallout 3 should be GoTY, but I honestly can't think of a title I would put ahead of it!! So in some ways it wins by default!

Every top game this year had more faults than I was happy with...

Controls in LBP were just not tight enough to warrant GoTY.
Gears 2 was a bit to similar to GoW, and failed to push the series onwards. I would actually say it was boring in places
Fable 2 was far to buggy and similar to Fable 1, but a lot of fun
MGS4 was a OK, but a poor entry compared to MGS on PS1 and MGS 3 on PS2.
Fallout 3 was solid for the most part, but the level cap was annoying, and it suffered far to many of the faults that plagued Oblivion.
GTAIV was by far the most massive disappointment of the year.
Left 4 Dead - far to over hyped
Call of Duty : WaW was great, but not exactly fresh

So for me, 08 had plenty of good games, but few AAA games. I would actually say I had more fun with titles like Persona 3, and replaying God of War 2!!

Fallout 3 is not really a RPG, you don't 'believe' in the world they made :
- you steal something and everybody in the world know it instantly (stupid 'karma' system from the eighties)
- want to be considered as a good man after killing 1000s people ? Easy, just give tons of purified water to the guy outside Megaton (yeah !!)
- the main quest is very short and uninspiring
- enemies partly level with you (not as bad as oblivion, but still)
- most fights are ultra easy with VATS : instant win button.

Fallout 3 is still a great game because it's huge, but it's more an amusement park than a RPG, so it definitely didn't deserve GotY award in my book. I hope we'll get back to REAL RPGs soon, I mean RPGs where you can loose a fight and where the world doesn't level with you...

fallout was fun, indeed the world was made well, but it was just too easy and i dont know, i dont really feel like playing it again. on other hand i finished mgs4 3 times. and it still thrills me just thinking about it. i think fallout is great but mgs4 should be goty.

I think I am more happy that GTAIV did not win than MGS4 lost. FO3 was a great game so at least it deserves to win. At this point it their opinion but at least it is a decent one. Also look at all the other awards almost every award that MGS4 was entered in it either won the award or won the readers choice. It also won the readers choice for GOTY. Don't be sad MGS fans I think our game got plenty of recognition.

I would rather have Mass Effect than Fallout III or MGS4. MGS4 just has no replayability & the gameplay was not very impressive. Great graphics, good story (not great, same typical MGS convoluted WTF is going on Story like every other MGS game). But after you play through it, it's over, kinda like Bioshock.

GOTY? I don't know about you but I play games that I find fascinating. I know within 5 minutes of booting up either one of my consoles that I am going to love it or hate it. I never by a game on a recommendation. Sure, I like to get other people's views but ultimately, I rent the game if it's questionable then purchase it if I find I cannot put it down.

Game's that you should/must play/buy.

Think about it;
Through-out the year, 3 to 5 games (average) releases for each platform, which equals dozens of games a year.
So, to narrow it down to the one's 'we' should be paying attention to, they use the 'GOTY' typo-thingy.

TBH, EVERYONE has a different GOTY (IGN,Metacritic,N4G,X-Play,etc .), it's all about who's opinion you trust and value.

For me, games are like flavors: if they interest me enough, I'm gonna want to try them all and judge for myself, despite who rates what.
