what??

wow i was way off, i thought MGS4 or GTAIV.....u kno a game that got a 10.

u would think that'll be a pre-requisite for GOTY

rucky5585d ago

Hmmmm i'm kinda wondering if IGN's just playing it safe now for the fanboys...

Bubble Buddy5585d ago

Rucky: You might have a point there. Can believe 08 by so fast.

Silellak5585d ago

Well, one big thing to consider:

Reviews are done by one or two people at most, GOTY is chosen by the entire staff. There are likely people on staff who do not believe GTA 4 or MGS4 are a worth a perfect 10, while Fallout 3 is.

blind-reaper5585d ago

Well It is a better choice than GTAIV...

Homicide5585d ago

yes....Yes.....YES!!!! Congrats Fallout 3. Finally some justice is served.

BulletToothtony5585d ago

Yes fallout3 was entertaining but it wasn't near as enjoyable as mgs4... Everything in mgs4 was incredible.. best experience in a video game i've ever had..

DA_SHREDDER5585d ago

Fallout 3 is my personal goty, Cod5 is second, and motorstorm 2 is my third.

callahan095585d ago

They're DEFINITELY playing it safe for the fanboys.

Same reason they gave Resistance 2 and Gears of War 2 the exact same score.

Elven65585d ago

Fallout 3 was good but for a RPG it wasn't very deep and in many cases (such as the subways) suffered from ME Syndrome. I preferred Fable II over Fallout 3.

In the grand scheme of things I would have thought GTA IV, MGS4, COD: WAW, etc would be better contenders then Fallout 3, even the biggest Fallout fan can't deny the issues that plague the game.

TheExecutive5585d ago

I spent more time in fallout than any game this year. Its an awesome RPG and deserves a GOTY award. Of course there was always MGS, Fable 2, and LBP to consider. However, my runner up is MGS. The cutscene in act 3 was the OMG of the year. The game was brilliant for what it did, absolutely brilliant. Fallout 3 had the depth the fun and the atmosphere to pull it off though. In any case Fallout 3 was an excellent game.

red5ive5585d ago

On IGN's "Best Of" List, XBox's game of the year was Fallout 3... PS3's game of the year was MGS4 that beat out Fallout 3 on the list... How does Fallout 3 beat MGS4 in Overall then? This doesn't make sense! IGN has got to elaborate.

InMyOpinion5585d ago

I thought MGS4 was competing for the Oscars...

Pika-pie5585d ago

Fallout 3 is a fantastic game, but I dont think it should have really got GOTY. Its got a really short main quest like, I was so disappointed when I finnished it. Also the lvl cap is way to easily reached. I also would have liked to have seen more towns like megaton, rather than just settlements with people living in abandond houses.

However Im still playing the game for all the sidequests and trophies.

GTAIV is my GOTY.

Jamegohanssj55584d ago

Has any one noticed the game of the year tends to get crappier and crappier?

Halo: Combat Evolved(Against GTA III? Yeah right)
Battlefield 1942(Against Vice City? Yeah Right)
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic(WTF?)
Half-Life 2(It seems as if they were smoking a pipe)
God of War(Honestly, what else came out in 2005?)
Okami(Don't make me laugh)
Super Mario Galaxy(What in the blue hell?)
Fallout 3(Against PS3 and 360 exclusives? I think not)

I believe this is the biggest piece of crap ever. IGN knows that it was either between MGS4 or GTA IV, but they were b!tching about it. Fallout 3 was one of the most half done games last year and it only got the score it did because it was by Bethesda. The graphics were crappy, the game play was crappy, the story was garbage. I would have rather had Wii Music receive game of the year than this garbage. I demand a recount because MGS4 or GTA IV should have won. Metal Gear Solid 4 was my game of the year just so you know. IGN kiss my ass.

TGSI

smokeandapancake5584d ago

I think people are "playing it safe" when they pick the normal MGS4 or GTA4. Fallout 3 lets me do what I want, when I want, and always kept me coming back for more (100+ hours). The main quest may be short, but if you play just that you're missing out on a lot.

Both the other "10s" I had to force myself to finish

DaTruth5584d ago (Edited 5584d ago )

You're the first person I ever heard of who had to force them self to finish MGS4!
"Oh just reached SHADOW MOSES, meh (yawns),Well since I bought the game, might as well finish it". or how bout this; "Rail gun war with Gekkos, Raiden and Vamp fight, (yahns) how boring".
At what point in the game did you decide you didn't want to play it more?

Diugu5584d ago (Edited 5584d ago )

I dont get it... Fallout didnt even win the PS3 GOTY yet they give it the overall. It just doesnt make any sense.

Anyways... I prefer MGS4 since it is my favorite game however Fallout 3 is also pretty good so congrats to it.

I am glad they didnt give it to GTAIV.

shovelbum5584d ago (Edited 5584d ago )

Excellent choice IMO. It is the only game that I would play hours on end and then dream about playing it some more (literally). The game made me want to explore every corner of it and I dreaded finishing it. Now I am on my third character and still enjoy it as much as I did when I first experienced it. MGS4, Gears 2, R2, L4D, Dead Space, LBP among others were great fun but Fallout (tho far from perfect) won me over within minutes of pressing the start button.

cryymoar5584d ago

sad to see people disagreeing to your personal GOTY choices.

But yes Motorstorm 2 was a very overlooked and underrated game, i think it's just that many people just aren't racing fans in general. But that game rocked! Might go and play it now, thanks. =]

Everyone is to scared of losing hits to pick exclusives anymore?

Silellak5585d ago

I highly doubt it. How many hits do you really think IGN would lose if they chose an exclusive game? Maybe a couple of hundred annoyed fanboys at most?

Pebz5585d ago

The best way to get most hits would actually be to pick an exclusive.

This thread would then have been 1200 degrees and 500 comments, with fanboys from the "winning side" celebrating the utter destruction of the opposition (because remember that for a game to get goty, it has to be at least a thousand times better than all other games combined), and the losing side calling bias and payoffs.

A display of human brilliance like that never fails to generate silly amounts of hits.

InMyOpinion5584d ago

They should have picked Gears of War 2.

Jandre025585d ago (Edited 5585d ago )

LOL. Oh well. Did GeOW2 win GOTY anywhere?

**Im not trying to make fun, im really asking if it did. Like a response.**

panasonic235585d ago

did resistance 2 when goty anywhere i not trying started a flame war but did resistance 2 win any awards.

IrishAssa5585d ago

I guess the better games are being left out...

UnSelf5585d ago

hey Panasonic did Panasonic win any tech awards dis year? Im not tryna be funny or nothin i just wanna kno how dey did against Samsung and Sony in tv's

Aclay5585d ago (Edited 5585d ago )

@panasonic23,

No, Resistance 2 didn't win any GOTY awards from anywhere.... but LittleBigPlanet sure did ;)

Silellak5585d ago

Nope, I don't think so. Closest it has come per Wikipedia is XBox 360 game of the year, which is not the same.

I_LOVE_MYSELF5585d ago

Has PS3 sold more consoles than either the 360 or the wii this gen?
not trying to start a flame war or anything I really want to know

O_O

DaTruth5584d ago

"Has PS3 sold more consoles than either the 360 or the wii this gen"?
If we're going year for year than the answer is yes. PS3 sold more consoles in its first and second year than 360 did in its first and second year.

tatotiburon5585d ago

Congratulations Fallout 3, great game and i'm waiting for the exclusive content for xbox 360, i'm glad i have the superior console version of IGN's 2008 GOTY.

MGOelite5585d ago

jesus if you was any further up your own ass you would be able to count the sweetcorn in your sh!t

PirateThom5585d ago

Meh, I'll get the DLC for PS3 when it's released a few months later.

thereapersson5585d ago

And I'll be getting it for the PC, which is the version that I have. Coincidentally, that's the most superior version out of all 3 versions of the game.

Oh, and STFU, Tiburon.

Veneno5585d ago

to give xbox 360 owners a false sense of security. WHY THE FVCK DIDN'T IT WIN BEST PS3 GAME OVER MGS4? Because IGN knows that 360 owners are self-delusional hopeless gamers. They are falling for IGN's dupe hook line and sinker. The evidence is right there in plain sight, that MGS 4 is IGN's game of the year, but 360 owners are so easily played like an instrument.

likedamaster5585d ago (Edited 5585d ago )

""And I'll be getting it for the PC, which is the version that I have. Coincidentally, that's the most superior version out of all 3 versions of the game.""

Besides a higher res, you mean the version with the most crashes? Not really the most superior version. I have it I'm almost done getting all the PC achievements so I know, just look at my cheevos.

thereapersson5585d ago (Edited 5585d ago )

Actually, it is the most superior version. Yes, it crashes often, but it also has the best graphics resolution, controls and it even has mod support that the console versions don't.

Also, you know what else you can do on the PC without DLC? Increase your level cap for extended play.

Anyway, none of this shocks me as much as the fact that Fallout 3 has one of the worst single-player endings of a modern video game -- not to mention the fact that the main quest is incredibly short and relatively linear in its objectives; that's a polarity in itself considering FO:3 prides itself in its open-world, go anywhere gameplay.

Anyone who disagrees with me obviously is either a) a narrow-minded moron who is easily placated, b) a fanboy who can't handle the truth, or c) hasn't beaten the game. If c) is the case, please do yourself a favor and draw out the game as LONG as you can. You'll enjoy yourself a lot more that way.

I still think they should have chosen Fable 2 :(

Great game, most of all... fun! Thought I was the only one of a few that really enjoyed F2.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies7d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken7d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing697d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker7d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing697d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt7d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken7d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

Now is the Best Time to Get This Incredible RPG Bundle on Steam

If you are looking for an awesome RPG, look no further. Steam is offering a significant discount on its Fallout Franchise Bundle.

SimpleSlave8d ago

"You can get all Fallout games in a bundle at a significant 20% discount on Steam. Individually, all these games add up to $244.91. With the discount, you can get them all for $195.91. That is $49 less than the original price. Quite a significant discount for such a popular franchise."

😊 😂 🤣 😐 - But why?

Just wait for a sale and get most if not all of it for a fraction of that price.

20% off...lol

Tacoboto8d ago

The games were just on a real sale over the last week or two for the show promotion. Fallout 4 was $10, 3 was $5, NV was cheap as heck too.

So what the heck is this

Inverno8d ago

The original games have been given out for free by Amazon for GOG and Epic, 76 is free now on Amazon if you have prime, Epic has also given out new Vegas for free and 4 has gone down to pretty cheap prices. 194 bucks is a total ripoff when you can get these games individually for less. Don't forget cd keys might sell em for a dollar less at times too. Come on man, us cheapskates won't touch anything near or above 100 lolz

isarai8d ago

Bro that's a ridiculous ripoff are you kidding me? 🤣

Fallout 3's Reveal Led To Death Threats And Bethesda's First Security Guard

The artist behind Fallout 4’s Deathclaw reveals just how bad things got back when Bethesda took over the series

anast9d ago

People are stupid I get it. No one should feel unsafe,

But I think they need to talk about why they cut so many corners during the development process and why none of their games ever look current. And why they think all of this is okay while they charge full price.

LucasRuinedChildhood9d ago

As much as Bethesda deserve criticism, that's not really relevant to the reveal of Fallout 3 in 2007.

VenomUK9d ago

The default angle Kotaku always go for is to highlight the worst in gaming.

I would’ve focused on the creative.

anast8d ago

The game went downhill at Fallout 3's release. This is when they started to cut corners.

gold_drake9d ago

there is no "but". the hell lol
you dont send death threats, period.

anast8d ago

Usually, you have good comments but this isn't one of them. It just rides the mob. We can do both condemn the actions and not let them use it for other things.

I can say I received a death threat and everyone needs to shut up. People are not honest and will use horrible things to their advantage.

Armaggedon9d ago

Not all games “look” current.

anast8d ago

Their games always look like the gen before it.

Armaggedon8d ago

Yeah, but thats not the result of laziness, incompetence, or a bad engine. Thats what happens with their type of open world games. Its hard for people to find a point of comparison because no one makes games like Bethesda does.

gold_drake8d ago

mh ok thanks, i still think ur wrong in this mate.

anast8d ago

No problem. I'm not here to convince you. I'm only stating an actuality. What your words do if we look at them like events.
