Looks like it would suck. Playing a pre-rendered movie via button cues went out with Dragon's Lair in the late 80's. It will bomb in it's reviews, just like Dragon's Lair.

I agree it will probably bomb, because games like this have never been very good. If I remember correctly Dragon's Lair was the first, and Sewer Sharks for Sega-CD came later. Neither of which were worth a sh*t. There is no such thing as gameplay in titles like this, it's just scripted pre-recorded cutsceens that you watch and try to hit the "next" button quick enough. But dude let the Sony population hype this like they have so many terds in the past, it makes for good fun when a game gets it's reviews.

How do you know it wasn't just a quick time event? It looked pretty gripping to me. You just WANT to hate troll. I didn't see any button presses neccessary to make her walk up the stairs. Gee, maybe it controls like any other 3rd person game.

Its too late too judge anything on this one yet except to say the production values are through the roof so it likely they've put a lot of work, thought and effort into this one, and probably wont forget about little thing called gameplay.

Pay attention to anything the gameplay is exactly like their previous game Indigo Prophecy. I don't know why some are so one dimensional. A true gamer enjoys all different genres just like a real movie buff likes movies of all genres. Story also makes a great game and I am sure this game will have a great story.

Graphical powerhouse here. With all honesty Heavy Rain isn't for most gamers, I loved Indigo Prophecy so this is defiantly atop my most wanted list.

Quantic Dream is continuing to be the only game developers to ever make a real feeling game. No superpowers, exp, levels, or guns lying around. Not that this alone makes it superior, just a VERY different type of game.

still, sh is a dying franchise. 4 was made by team silent but wasn't really that good, then sh origins was made by climax, that one wasn't very hot either. the americans just don't have what it takes imo to create a new silent hill, and i don't think i will be wrong about silent hill homecoming. just look at the hollywood adaptation of famous japanese horror movies (ringu, grudge) the japanese ones were clearly scarier.

True, but the thing about 4 is that it wasn't originally meant to be a SH game. It wasn't decided until 70% into the dev cycle that it would be. And Origins wasn't that bad. Honestly, I think SH is salvageable, but they need to go back to the roots. Keep the number of characters in the single digits and make the story revolve around something that isn't generally regarded to be morally acceptable. The twists in the first three could really knock you on your ass, and the clunky controls added to the suspense. There's also something about the character models from the first three that they haven't captured again since 3, but they seem to have hit that "something" spot-on with Shepherd's mother. I really think they could get this one right if they play their cards correctly and polish it like it needs to be.

To all the ppl saying "interactive movie" and "no gameplay"

Real gamers want new leaps in innovation and immersion in terms of gameplay and story as new games come out just like in "Heavy Rain". Instead of the same rehashed gameplay that we see with most games now 'a days. Not to say that current gameplay is bad, but evolution in gameplay is the way to go. Save for a few games which gameplay works really well. A lot of you seem to be turned off to this game b/c it doesn't look like what you're use to, but you just might like it.

Anyway can't wait to play Heavy Rain.

if you want to try something new, and get a feel for what Heavy Rain will be like, however, go find Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit in the UK). you can find it at bargain prices, and you may be presently surprised at how involving the story is, and how the gameplay and story are NOT separate elements, like many of you youngin's think.

they way some of you bat away truly unique and innovative ideas just because it's on a "rival" system, is the reason why the gaming industry has grown stagnant.

remember the 1990's in the comic book world? (i'm sure some of the younger folks here don't) after Image Comics debuted, comic publishers everywhere tried to hop on the bandwagon and use gimmicks to increase interest and awareness in comics. there were foil-embossed covers, 7 variants of issue 1, and so many copycat characters and ideas that the comic book industry all but crashed. it took some creative thinking out of the box to get the industry out of it's mire, and back on track.

the gaming industry could stand to learn from that. ENOUGH with the tired shooter after tired shooter, we don't want that type of game like we used to. bring on more titles like Heavy Rain and Little Big Planet; familiar but different. more games like Fat Princess Crash Commandos.

it's encouraging to see developers take risks on new ideas, but the success of those new ideas rely on US, the gamer, to support them and bring about change.

if we don't stand up and support the quality new efforts like Heavy Rain, we'll be stuck with more and more titles like Conflict: Generic Shooter, Turok, and Kane and Lynch; bland, uninspired games.

Heavy Rain looks amazing, and being a fan of Indigo Prophecy, i can't wait to get my hands on it.

i'm just sick of games like Ico, Okami, Beyond Good and Evil, and Indigo Prophecy not getting their due because of boneheads that play lip-service; whining about the lack of innovation in games to sound self-important, but then when truly innovative and unique games hit like the few i mentioned above, it's like crickets chirping and tumbleweeds blowing by, and they are nowhere to be seen but they are most certainly waiting in line EXPECTANTLY for the next Madden and GTA.

ME: if you are as familiar with Indigo Prophecy and it's gameplay as you say you are, then you should understand people's enthusiasm for this new game. yes, there are QTE's in IP, but the way they are implemented into the game was indeed very unique and interesting. the result of the creative use of QTEs are what would be labeled "innovative." the dialogue system in Indigo was also VERY unique and innovative, often making you choose a response in a matter of seconds, which alter the course of the story.

also, how can you judge creativity from just a few seconds of gameplay? what is creative? what makes games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and Metal Gear Solid 4 creative? can you sum that up in a minute long video, or a few screenshots? video games are INTERACTIVE. the majority of their appeal lie in that interactivity. not a single one of us can say "yay" or "nay" on Heavy Rain based off of what we've seen because we haven't played it yet. for example, looking at screens and videos of Pixel Junk Monsters and Pixel Junk Eden, i marked those off as a "pass." it wasn't until PLAYING the game that i experienced, first hand, how creative and unique those games were.

again, what makes people excited about Heavy Rain isn't just it's amazing visuals, but the pedigree of the studio making it. they have shown in the past that they are capable of thinking outside of the box, and with positive results.

i agree with IP being an underrated game, but i'm confused as to how you'd suddenly find Quantic Dream's NEXT game, which applies all they learned from Indigo Prophecy, and combines with an infinitely better toy to play with? is your reluctance to give these guys credit where it's due due to it being a Playstation 3 exclusive title? i don't know.

it'd be like me crapping all over Bioshock 2 or something, if it turned out to be a 360 exclusive. a good game is a good game, and the first Bioshock was EXCELLENT, so why would i expect the second to be WORSE? at the least, it will be more of the same. so a good time.

from that perspective, Heavy Rain, i'm expecting, at the least, to be more of the same, but that's next to impossible, considering the significant gap in technology between the two games. so, at the least, i realistically expect it to surpass Indigo Prophecy in every category, based off of technology, and the growing experience of the developers, therefore, my, and other people's excitement for this game, even based off of a minute and a half long trailer is completely justified.

Actually according 1up that's just one of many scenarios that can happen at that house. Apparently you can sneak into the house and leave the place without meeting the killer or under certain circumstance you may end up killing him. The way you approach the game will actually change the game and it's environment, though the main story seems to remain the same.

it would have been easy for Ninja Theory to extend gameplay by opening up the HUGE areas in the game, but then people would have complained about the game having too much exploration and back-tracking. instead, NT focus on delivering a straight to the point, cinematic experience, and people STILL complain about it being too short (last i checked, 9 hours isn't too short; which is about how long it took me to beat it first time. with an additional 8 second playthrough, and 5 third playthrough, just to unlock everything).

i think a lot of devs have learned that you can't please everyone, and they should just focus on making the best game they can; something they can be proud of. the developers of Heavy Rain seem to be following that ideal.

To those that say this game is just an "interactive cut-scene" don't understand that there is actually more to this game. The scene you watched in the trailer is just one out of many scenarios that can happen while in that house. One scenario has you even killing the taxidermist. Heavy Rain seems to focus on the concept of "for every action there's an equal reaction". From what I've read so far your actions changes the game and its environment making the game different every time you play it. Quantic Dreams really want you to think about the consequences of you actions thus making this more than an "interactive cut-scene/movie" but more of an "interactive experience". Though people maybe turned off by the concept of this game, it's really something all lot developers need to think about when making a game.

Those graphics alone are reason enough to pic this game up. It's look like an interesting story the atmosphare and weather are spot on. The game play reminds me of Shenmue. Which is a good thing so am looking forward to following this title up and see how it turns out.

From the teaser trailer from E3 I thought it was going to be one of those artsy games with loads of nonsense story and dull characters where you watch loads of cutscenes with some mega-involved plotline and then go searching for some batteries for your torch, enjoyed only by sensitive artists and nobody else because everyone else just _doesn't get it!!_

And... well it goes beyond that. Sure the graphics look fine. Woop. What gameplay is there? Watch your character run around a house while pushing a button when the screen prompts you to? You may as well just play DVD extras...

after seeing the MP I am actually more excited for KZ2 then I was when the E3'05 trailer was shown.

Plus, I like the art direction better than that of '05. Sure it doesnt look quite as good but I am sure the differences will be negligible when it is released.

is that in the IGN write up, it was explained that the demo shown (and the subsequent trailer), aren't even IN Heavy Rain, nor are they part of the story. it was created to specifically show off their intentions with Heavy Rain in terms of interactivity, emotion, graphics, and atmosphere.

the "real" Heavy Rain and it's story are still being kept under lock and key as to not spoil anything.

I think the only people who look at this and see nothing more than an interactive movie are those who have not experienced Indigo Prophecy. If you even played the DEMO for that game you'd know the immense potential that is here. In Indigo Prophecy little things you do in the game affect how the story plays out. And it's not all pressing buttons through cutscenes (but it ensures that you're always part of the game no matter what's happening). To give you an example of what you can probably expect... in Indigo Prophecy you end up killing a guy a bathroom of a coffee shop. You can choose to hide the body, clean the blood off the floor, wash the blood off your hands, get rid of the knife, whether or not you pay your bill before leaving... and what you choose to do can drastically change what happens. The game can even end at that point with you going to prison! You also make conversational choices when interacting with characters much like Mass Effect. It's far from linear and I expect this will be very much the same.

I agree with some that are saying the facial animations aren't THE best. Nothing yet tops Heavenly Sword... but that bit at the end is easily the most detailed character model I've seen running in real time. Game looks absolutely breathtaking!

Ok I really liked Fahrenheit, the end alittle sucked, but games was cool and I really like Serial Killer games and movies - Se7en, Condemned and so on... And this looks like it has atmosphere from Se7en, gameplay from Fahrenheit and it will really OWN!

looks like another game that shows off the power of the ps3. Note that this game isn't relying on the Unreal Engine 3 like most games made for Microsoft's 360. Didn't know too much about this game, but that trailer alone has me excited about it.
