Rumor: Microsoft Paid For Final Fantasy XIII PS3 Exclusivity Breach?

Kotaku - "There's apparently a big feature article in the upcoming issue of Japanese gaming mag Famitsu that talks Square Enix, Final Fantasy XIII and all that jazz. While scans haven't hit the internet yet, we've heard from several trusted insiders who have seen the yet-unreleased issue. It mentions that FFXIII is going to be out in Japan by next summer and in Europe/USA on both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 by the end of 2009 - which pretty much what we already know.

Here's the juicy bit: According to the Famitsu piece, Microsoft is footing the bill for Square Enix's FFXIII breach of PS3 exclusivity contract. No idea how much money that entails or the exact deal Microsoft worked out with Square Enix, but the fact there is not Xbox 360 version announced for Japan is telling. Square Enix does state how porting the game to the Xbox 360 should be easy.

More interesting tidbits: It's apparently hard to tell which looks better: Star Ocean 4 or Final Fantasy XIII. Also, the company plans to focus more on PSP game development from now on. File this as rumor until proper scans surface."

Square Enix has been working FFXIII for a few years now and suddenly they are making a xbox version at E3. Obviously Microsoft game studios payed for it. And also the other 4 rpgs they payed for too. There is noway any of those rpgs would go to the 360 and 1 or 2 them are exclusive, so there was money in it and if you don't believe it then your a child.

Microsoft may have paid for FFXIII, but Square Enix are the ones that accepted the offer, or even came to them with the deal we don't know yet. anyways what you are seeing is competition, This is how it plays out, while you might see it as unfair, this is business. These companies Sony, Microsoft,and nintendo are out to get the biggest market share they can. The bigger the market share the more they make, just remember that.

Sony is paying Konami for MGS4 exclusivety. MS is paying Epic for Gears of War exclusivety. They all pay 3rd parties for exclusive rights. Well duh MS is starting to show how afraid they are this gen against Sony's PS3.
Some of the games they are trying to buy the 360 can't handle them.
FFXIII is gonna look bad on the 360 because of compression issues.
Try compressing 50GB of Blu-ray space on to 10 DVDs.
Also I know the 360 can't handle the processing power that was made for this game.
Why?
Because it was built around the Cell Processor.
Square Enix will try their best to make it look good on the 360 but it's nearly impossible to get this game game at the level of what the PS3 is gonna play this game on.

I am now officially no longer interested in Final Fantasy games. I use to like them but all this wait and now if the PS3 version is delayed so they can release with the xbox 360 version then they lost a customer. This doesn't say Microsoft paid Square so they could break an exclusivity deal. It says that because Square made a deal with Microsoft, it's Microsoft that'll be paying the fee for the breach of the exclusive contract with Sony.

We know Sony signed an exclusivity contract with Square-Enix (they probably paid for parts of development, etc) and we know that Square-Enix broke it to port the game to the 360. We know that Square-Enix wouldn't have done it if they had to pay the exclusivity breach fee which would have been pretty hefty(especially since they probably would have to return that development money that Sony contributed and that they could not be so sure how well the game would sell on the 360).

Sony and Konami have a very healthy relationship, I don't actually think money was involved in that case. Konami said MGS4 didn't have to be bought exclusively for the PS3 because Hideo Kojima wanted it to stay on the PS3 and didn't want otherwise so Sony didn't need to pay for exclusivity. Although, I'm sure Konami would have loved to release it for PS3 and 360 to reap the added rewards.

Not everyone will, I would guess enough people will be importing it(I am), and the PS3 version will be done long before the 360 version is started.

This will really paint a poor picture of SE in the Japanese media, breach of contract, serious business anywhere in the world, Sony won't sue because they still have a crap load of SE games and they don't want to jeopardize that. Bottom line is M$ is a business, with investors, employees, and all the other stuff you would associate with a company. They do have investors that would be overjoyed if the Xbox division actually turned a profit. They are trying to squeeze their competition out and take away one of Sony's crown jewels. I've got no issue with companies paying for exclusives, or big titles going multiplatform. The games industry is a business, and businesses are ONLY looking to make money.

The more money a company makes, the more games it can invest it. So from that viewpoint multiplatform titles are a good thing. We the gamers benefit.

However in this case, if it's true that the PS3 version will be delayed until the 360 version is finished then my opinion of SquareEnix drops a lot, and my opinion of Microsoft as well.

I own both a PS3 and 360, but of late I have had no reason to boot up the 360. The fact that they now have FFXIII changes nothing. I'll still be buying it on PS3. But the extra, pointless, wait annoys me enough to seriously consider whether I would continue to buy MS consoles in the future. At the moment Microsoft are only detracting from the industry with their lame attempts to catch up with the PS3's original and innovative titles.
