Sony PS3 2.43 update needed to fix 2.42 firmware

It looks like we will need the Sony PS3 2.43 update much sooner than later as it's needed to fix the 2.42 firmware. We are getting numerous reports that the latest Playstation 2.42 firmware is causing problems for users.

Personally our PS3 is just fine but then we have not had much time with it since the latest firmware. This is what some gamers have reported to PR:

Give it up. I never had RROD problems but it doesn't mean that it didn't exist. Sony keeps on adding features and fixing things that should've been included when the system launched. Thing about adding "features" after launch is you better be damn sure it's compatible with all the hardware and user configurable options.

the thing is RROD effects about 1/3 of 360s and the firmware updates effect about less than 1% of PS3s & and the bad firmware updates dont completely destroy your console like RROD so its no a big deal like u say

I fully admit the 360 is a POS, however I still love the games. MS screwed up big time with RROD, a loading tray, loud-ass fans, no HDMI, and proprietary HDDs.

PS3 is a good machine, I've owned one. I'm not going to keep repeating myself. I think that a lot of features being added to PS3 should've been there from the start. Sure the PS3 updates don't cause as many problems, however they aren't perfect, either.

I love the games for 360, but I don't like the system. I enjoyed the PS3 in the time I had one, yes I'll own another. I've made myself out to be a 360 fanboy and I guess there's some truth to it. I'm not going to make any excuses for MS in regards to the problems they've had with 360.

Yes the dashboard update has bricked some 360s, and I believe the problems with PS3s aren't as widespread, but they're out there. Not everyone goes into a forum to tell that their PS3 crapped out. The 360 has been plagued with problems so I think people pay more attention to it.

Yes updates are good, however they should do more thorough testing instead of releasing patches to fix features that should've been there since launch. On the same note, MS should've tested the 360 hardware more before launching the system.

One thing I am curious about is how long the lifetime for Bluray drives will be. They've been out just under two years and I'm wondering how the diodes will hold up over time. I'm sure they're ok, though.

The 360 had problems with a dashboard upated which bricked a lot of 360's so 360 has had Hardware & o/s problems mate.
15m Playstation 3 and a handful of problems,when a problem happens Sony are quick to fix unlike some other manufacturers firmware updates are good because they add features and improve how the PS3 works if you have one and your not happy you can get rid of it can't you.

Whenever I see that there's an update I'm happy. Cuz they either added some new stuff or fixed some bugs (that I probably wasn't aware of anyway). And it's not that often that it would be some kind of inconvenience to downolad and install. So don't moan over nothing.. Patches and uptades are a GOOD thing. "Get it right the first time".. Ok so they didn't. You can NEVER be sure you did everything right, especially if it's with something that has stuff and features added all the time. At least it's fixable without having to send away your console..

Don't compare PS3's minor "software problems" with 360's major hardware problems.. please :)

Not always. I've said positive things about PS3 and negative things about 360 in various posts since I've been here and yes, I am a recovering MS fanboy but all of my posts aren't against the PS3.

In my comment above I blatantly called the 360 a POS. I said what bugged me about the system, I said that both Sony and MS need to test their updates more thoroughly, I didn't say anything hateful about the PS3 but I still got a number of disagrees.

And on topic, yes, all companies should put their systems through thorough testing. Either MS didn't even try to test the 360 much, or they just simply ignored the RROD until it became a widespread problem. Sony is now guilty of the same error, though theirs was much more minor. Disagree away, but it's true. These things NEED thorough testing. These are the first 2.42 problems I've heard of though, so this could be a big coincidence, with other things causing their problems.

While i have not had any problem's with the 2.42 update. I have had problems with a few other update's to that one. But the 2.42 did not make my trophy's load any faster. But on the other hand i have never had a problem with a 360 update, so take it how you will some of us have the luck some don't.

Looks like I'm the only one, but when going from ingame to XMB or vice versa (not ingame xmb however) there is a small chance that I get a line through the x=y axis and the stuff that is supposed to be on the bottom is on the top. Happens only every once in a while and only on one TV/PS3. A restart fixes it, but it is annoying.

Once again, Sony did not force bluray on anyone. If that was the case, then why didn't PS2 owners graduate to the PS3 yet? That's not forcing bluray on anyone.

Compression will only make the quality look worse on games, especially multi-platform games. Do you think the 360 will still be around in 2012? I believe Sony will maintain a ten year lifespan because of the PS2. The PS2 started out slow the same way and YET it managed to be one of the best consoles on the market. Microsoft will unveil a new system soon enough because of space issues on the system and the fact that we're slowly approaching what the future will be like years from now. Soon, developers will be creating bigger, and longer games. And if they can't make do with the 360 and it's space, then they will move on to the PS3.

Sony owns 8% of the shares in Square, not 10%. And once again, you're an idiot. I said that Sony could not outbid Microsoft because it seems as if Microsoft has infinitely large pockets. Sony used their money wisely by working on first party studios. They knew that 3rd party exclusives were slowly dying. And they are not the type to buy out developers because they don't throw around money like Microsoft does.

You can't even spell criticized for that matter. Phil Harrison was correct in saying that because it did in fact create confusion among the consumers. Microsoft completely abandoned the people they had for the original XBox and got started on the 360, thus rushing it out the market. Harrison knew what he was talking about because Microsoft ignored the userbase they had on the original XBox and created the XBox 360. They forced consumers of the original XBox to jump to the XBox 360.

Backward capability was removed to try and reduce production costs once again. To some consumers, that may not have been a wise move but Sony wanted to focus their full attention on the PS3. I'm sure Sony knew what they were doing when they removed backward capability. Despite doing that, their systems are still being sold out in major retailer stores such as Walmart and Best Buy. Many people bought PS3's to play PS3 games, not PS2 games.

the first 2 are because thier blueray drive has broken, not because of the update. Happned to me once before. Probably bricked by dust or too hot/cold temperature in the rooms.

Can't connect one: Let me guess you have been testing GTA 4 or Cod 4 and then say that you can't stay connected to ANY game... This will fix itself just relax it's just something with the psn network. Nothing with the patch to do either.

Cod4 saves being gone is total BS: Sometimes you fail to connect to the game server which holds your score and because of that when you choose perks they won't be saved on the game server. Try waiting a day before you post OMG OMG BRICKED!

But a friend of mine on another website just told me when he updated to firmware 2.42 that he gets randomly disconnected from PSN. His exact quote was this.

"Anyone else having problems with the new 2.42 firmware ? My PS3 keeps signing me in and out of PSN and sometimes freezing all together. Once i'm in a game it's fine, but it seems like when i navigate XMB it wants to freeze."

I'm pretty sure the people who are having issues with firmware 2.42 are in the minority. I installed it on Friday and have had no issues to date.

FW 2.41 addressed the bricking issue when the user had 'certain admin rights' enabled on their consoles which caused the bricking. FW 2.42 is suppose to address further support for the PS format and faster-loading of Trophies. All taken from PS-Blog naturally.

If you want to speed it up, you could download it from the PlayStation site and use a USB stick.

I know if you hold down the power button on the front for to long it will revert to the factory default settings. This is a handy trick for anyone who has their PS3 set up for an HDTV, but then tries to use it on an SDTV. That could be the root of your problems.

Try shutting it off using the PS button if you haven't done that before.

I used to build PC rigs - Sometimes you could build two identical rigs using exactly the same hardware, and yet one may have issues with a driver and the other would not, or one would have an IRQ conflict and the other be fine.

When you're working on the insanely complex chips and tech like Sony, Intel, Nvidia etc are, sometimes wacky things happen in what should be identical components.

Just yesterday my son's XBOX 360 was giving him a red light of death. Mind you, it's a 3 year old system. And, it's not a full ring... just a single light.

I did the research and determined that it is a problem with the video. Strange, it is able to show the video of the error message on the screen. It seems the problem is EITHER the video cable OR the GPU. I'm going to get a new video cable hoping that this turns out to be the solution. If not, I will return the cable and pay MS $99 to have it repaired. Unfortunately, my son will be without it for weeks.

Now, this is a true story. It is also a story of an isolated incident. To try to claim this is news, collect the various cases together, and try to proclaim that it is a wide-spread and catastrophic problem is just bad journalism. It just leads everyone to distrust EVERYTHING they read on the Internet (maybe this should already be the case.)

In these isolated cases of updates screwing up some PS3s, they might have had a full hard drive. They might have had a power outage or brown out during the update. There may have been a bad sector on the hard disk. There may have been any number of situations that led to the problem itself, not merely the act of downloading and installing the update. After all, I downloaded and installed the update (for my PS3) and everything worked fine. This isn't to say that others aren't having problems... but if a handful of people are having problems and it is reported as "news" that the update itself is bad, it just becomes propaganda.

I could just as easily say that maybe only 1/3 of XBOX's get a RROD... but maybe another 1/3 get a simple hardware failure within the first 3 years... and the remaining 1/3 never have a problem because, after a couple of years or so, they get used less and less. I could come up with a bunch of articles from people who have experienced each of these issues and try to paint the picture... but just because you can paint a picture does not make the picture true.

Unless someone has an actual quote from Sony (or from Microsoft) about a particular issue, the only thing you are reporting is from angry individuals who had isolated incidences that made them unhappy. That's all. Not everything lasts forever or works perfectly all of the time.

I've actually had some problems. Don't know if it's because of the firmware, but occasionally the PS3 will tell me there has been a hard drive error and requires that I format it. I press OK to get to the next screen and it says formatting the disk will wipe everything off my hard drive, would I like to go through with this. I then put NO, shut off the console, and unplug the output. Then I just set everything up again and turn it on. Doesn't ask again, and takes me right back to the XMB with all my data intact. A minor nuisance, but I can deal with it.

Oh yeah, sometimes when I navigate to the video section of the XMB it doesn't load, and have to shut off the system. Either way, I'm just happy it still works. But I thought my PS3 was lucky. :'( Even if my PS3 bricks eventually, I won't be mad. Sony has done a lot and has managed to only affect a very limited amount of consoles. They deserve every buck. This is what hardware reliability is all about. :)

The system does not read bluray disks for more then 10 minutes anymore but I know there is nothing wrong with the drive because it still recognizes my discs. This is a crappy article that should not have been approved, If there was a problem with the last firmware update there would have been a hundred pages of posts on the problem in the PS3 forums.

And people acting like there have not been any firmware problems on the Xbox 360, they are wrong. I myself had a problem with one of the updates that caused my machine not be able to play games and about a week and a half later they released another update to fix that problem. It was all over the web when it happened.

I own both systems and I have had way more problems with the Xbox 360 than I have had on the PS3. Games crash more often on the Xbox 360( not to a great extent but more often). I've experinced more bugs in games on the Xbox 360, and even though some games look and run better on the Xbox 360 It still has it's share of games that look bad, play bad and run bad. I have also had one system RROD on me.

As far as lag problems on each system, I think the 360 has fewer prolems because most people have wired connections with the 360 where most people on PS3 have wireless connections, me personally have problems with lag on both systems, even when playing UNO on 360 and the game says my connection is at 100%.

My point being is that niether system is perfect, but for me the 360 is farther from being perfect.

there are millions of ps3s. Doing software updates there will always be some systems that just tend to mess up. Everytime something updates there is going to be come problem with something. Its impossible for a company to test that and be hiccup free. Sony does a good job re-patching and react fast and I personally never had a problem with updating what so ever.

to get a PS3, I'd recommend the 40gig SKU. I have never had a problem with ANY updates. I bought a 160GB Seagate for a $100 and it still works flawlessly.

Firstly Sony have no clue about software updates, they release software updates for updates and then another update for the previous 2 updates.

On top of that they have proved their total incompetance for creating a unified global network for gamers to play together from all over the world creating limitations.

In addition to their incompetance Sony are not even able to create an online network that brings gamers together in a unified environment allowing interaction and networking.

Sony also has the problem in delivering a complete PS3 experience by having to degrade their own machine to create sales due to losses, in addition they then say how BC is not needed and to purchase a last gen console instead again due to their incompetance.

To add further to their incompetance and total lack and disregard for gaming this gen they are keeping their hopes up on blu-ray that has completely failed to show that the space is truely needed, no game has hit mass sales on a global scale nor has any game on blu-ray shown the full capabilities. Instead Sony are advising to 'wait' on titles that fully use the space.

And going further on Sony's promises have been much higher and greater than anyone elses resulting in total embarassment which has been shielded by PS3 fans who are extreme loyalists who wouldn't know what gaming was if it hit them in the face.

Instead Sony's PS3 platform is acustomed to having 1yr old Xbox 360 ports again games which fit on a DVD and are being ported onto a blu-ray disc - complete overkill.

Overall with the lack of decent games, loss of exclusives and a terrible online network that seriously lacks content and design the PS3 is only for those that are die hard Sony loyalists or those that want more than one console for the sake of it.

You want a true gaming experience with an amazing online network and content? The PS3 is NOT it.

that has nothing to do with it, the xbox 360 itself hasn't been hacked... only the dvd drive since hackers have found a way to put it into service mode. I figure a similar hack could be performed on the ps3, except nobody has blu-ray burners yet. I think blu-ray was a good way of stopping people from pirating games, $300+ burner, 20 gig+ games and $20+ blank single layer discs.

I have a launch ps3 and never had a problem, with hardware or software, maybe I'm just fortunate, the only thing that has been a problem was the 2.4 update. For some reason Call of Duty 4 lags when I use the mic. I using it wirelessly with about 45 % signal strength, plays fine until I connect the mic. Never had the issue before that particular update, but I'm assuming if I get a better signal everything will be fine, but that's something I hope they fix.

It's simply a conflict with the ISP. Most can be solved by lowering your nat from moderate or strict to open. Unfortunately it happens all the time to me :/ Try resetting your router before anything.

i just got my ps3 about a week ago, its 40 gig that ive had since christmas but just got back here to use it. it was still in the box and never used. once i hooked it up everything was woking fine blu-ray, games, etc.. until i hooked it up online last night and it updated the firmware. now i cant watch my blu-ray movies or any movies for that matter. cod4 worked for about an hour after the update. now nothing no other games i have work. anybody got anything that can help here. im new to doing anything on the ps3 so youll have to explain it please.

After the 2.42 i can not stay connected to any online game also random freezes slow to react xmb very slow trophy loading times so i rang sony they said if under warranty the stor you got it from will exchange it for a new one this is the second time im now on my 3rd ps3 but i think it is something to do with updates. Firmware glitches (or the perception of glitches) will degrade customer satisfaction over time.

The RRoD is a example of this. Lots and lots and lots and lots of Xbox 360 units became defective. Has Jasper chipset fixed this ? We are never sure. It's a serious running problem for Microsoft.

The perception of the RRoD is carried by youtube videos, game site videos and comments. Look at N4G -- it's brought up on almost every single story no matter what the story content is. So, the perception is being "propogated". Usually spikes around the time that 1) Sony has a problem, or 2) MS about to release a AAA title like Too Human.

So, fair game.

Sony's firmware glitches (or the perception of glitches) is now a small problem. Sony owners seem ultimately completely forgiving of Firmware problems so far. However, if glitches, or the perception of bugginess continues, even the most loyal Fanboys will become unhappy.

For Sony's sake, I hope they continue fixing their patches, or at least dispelling the dis-information out there, so that this does not occur. I am a loyal XBOX freak, however I also own a PS3 at 2.42 (no errors). I do not want a RRoD firmware type scenario for PS3 *ever*.

Believe it or not, most 360 owners want Sony to be highly successful this year. Because it drives innovation and competition at the high end (the hardcore AAA) -- and this is good for everybody.

Listen - the PS3 is great console. But no one, and I mean *no one*, thought Sony would struggle through this gen the way they have. If the PS3 were a battleship, it would have big guns firing, but it would also have fire an smoke coming out of it.No one wants it to sink.

It's not Sony's fault MS is getting the checkbook out and paying 3rd party developers to go multi-platform (I'm looking at you Square). Hence why Sony is stressing how important 1st party games are in this race.

As a self-proclaimed Sony fan (not fanboy), I admit the 360 seems like an attractive console "right now", but I look at gaming as an investment. I feel more confident getting a PS3 knowing there will be support for it 7-8 years from now. Why would I buy a 360 now and have to turn around in 3-4 years to get the latest MS console? MS hasn't proven to me their consoles are in it for the long haul. Please feel free to point to where they want to be around as long as the PS3 and I will eat crow.

If MS can prove the RROD happened 1-2% like normal electronics and made Live free, I would be very tempted. Until then, Sony has my interest and $.
