Microsoft: Go Ask Konami If 'Metal Gear Solid 4' Is Xbox-Bound

What people don't realize is the amount of developers Sony has purchased. Everyone blames MS but think about the # of developers SOny has aquired. When Sony entered the industry it was very small software wise. Now thru out ther years it has bought tons of devloper, so many in fact it has more studios than Nintendo.

Second most serious flaw after the RRoD is simply the fact that not all 360s have hard drives.

Metal Gear is 50gig. Sure you could swap 6 disks, but that's pretty ugly. Plus they have announced that now games will have install on 360s. (Yep, getting FF likely pushed this announcement, because it's pretty big too). I'm sure other devs have told them that they basically had no choices as well.

So I now pity those Arcarde 360 owners. Sure, for now, the install won't be mandatory, but it's only a question of time. A very short time.

Next Microsoft big news? A newer bigger harddrive. The 120gig will be phased out, and a new 320gig will "only" be $200 dollars. (Maybe more, they are so greedy)

I totally agree with you. The only profitable IP that Microsoft has in its first-party arsenal is Halo, and that one IP is not enough to carry them throughout an entire console generation (5 years, at the least). Microsoft does nothing but throw money in third-party developers faces, cross their fingers, and hope that their money will cause some kind of an advantage to the xbox 360.

Sony has so many gamer-valued IP's that Sony alone can cause a significant impact with their games. Honestly. Tomorrow morning cannot come any faster. Sorry to disappoint you bud, but I went to Johns Hopkins and no Accounting doesn't lead buyouts. I doubled in Biomedical Engineering and Business Admin conc. marketing w/minor in Acctng. Accountants complete the acquisitions but don't initiate them. In fact short of the CFO, nobody in the account department even suggests it. I guess you haven't finished your schooling so don't even get into it with me because you've never conducted a buyout and I have actually worked through one with my company's legal counsel (who incidentally went to USC law). Let's talk about it when you have real world experience. Nobody in the f**king accounting dept deals directly with acquisitions until after most of the foundation's been laid. They analyze, double check, and approve the buyout after the talks are initiated. Then they integrate the merging company's books after. Ie most of the grunt work.

They are even starting to get exclusive games from third parties, some timed and some not. I remember clearly when Sony entered the console war against Sega and nintendo with the PS1,Sony did not get to where it was through innovation ( The sega saturn was a technically superior machine on paper) but through buying exclusives,timed exclusives and just being the well known and respected brand SONY. I still remember when Tomb raider was released, It was groundbreaking at the time and Sony bought the timed exclusive to it, Suddenly the local trade papers were full of Second hand Sega saturns for sale. This was the start of the mighty Sony Playstation era and the beginning of the end of Sega's era. Sony had the money and Sega did not. Whats interesting and relevant now is a case of "what goes around comes around" and Microsoft is playing Sony at it's own game. The reason why PS3 seems "to be losing" a lot of exclusives, I say seem because in reality it is not losing anything, is that PS brand is the only established console with tons of titles calling it "home".
Cmon what title can 360 say that this is the "home" for that game. Not many. They don't have a lot of exclusives to begin with so its kinda hard for them to lose a lot of titles.
This all boils down to the ancient proverb that EXCLUSIVE titles are a thing of the past. Only possible for some of the biggest developers. Certainly it is possible for SE to keep their games exclusive with 900 million on their bank account and being one of the largest developers in the world. I mean people blame Sony but if SE says FF13 will appear on 360, there is very little Sony can do about it.
So since the bots are getting so cokky with "their list". Perhaps, we should keep a list as well. Because "exclusivity thing is a thing of the past", works both ways, bots.

The reason for this is you can cut yourself a break when you are the developer/publisher. I'm sure Sony isn't paying $59 a pop for each game, but I'm also sure Konami isn't giving them a discount either. By purchasing a large quantity of games from Konami, Sony is making sure MGS sells very well. This helps Konami justify keeping the series console exclusive instead of porting to other consoles to increase their customer base.

You can pay for an exclusive with a big fat check, pay for exclusive content, publish the game at a reduced rate or even free. You can even buy the company. There are more ways to insure a console exclusive then you think. They all revolve around money.

Since FFXIII is now coming to the 360, I honestly wouldn't be surprised to hear that MGS4 would be coming to the 360, but MGS4 has performed well on the PS3 so far, so I can see why Konami might just keep MGS4 a PS3 exclusive. MGS4 was a big budget game, but it was no where near as big as the budget that FFXIII had. If the Playstation 3 had a higher install base, FFXIII would still be a PS3 exclusive because in a article earlier today Square said that the reason why FFXIII is going to be released on the 360 is because of it's high intall base in English speaking territories, so basically SquareEnix is releasing FFXIII on the 360 for financial reasons... but I still think that Microsoft paid some money for it because SquareEnix said that they had no plans to even release another Final Fantasy game on the Xbox 360 after FFXI.

Microsoft keeps talking of Playstation franchise games that have ended up on the 360, but what about Bioshock beceause that's now coming to the PS3, also Saints Row 2 is coming to the PS3 and Mass Effect could go multiplatform now that Bioware is under EA.

Microsoft needs to go out and make their own 1st party games.

its true M$ is hurting gamers because multiplat games are always worse than an exclusive game made solely for one console, but they are really really hurting Sony. Sony is now on a position in which all their 1st party games MUST be systems seller quality in order to keep closing the gap between them and Xbox, and that's a very hard thing to do.

To me, as a long time MGS fan, MGS4 was a HUGE, MAJOR Disappointment. From the fact that the story sucked, the online sucked (and it sucks more now because charging you more money for the online), Konami didn't even bother to add the usual easter eggs (codec moments, lessons, history...etc) like how they added in MGS2 and MGS3.

Kratos, Ratchet, Jak, and even Nathan Drake have endeared themselves to Playstation gamers over the past 11 years, and they won't go away.

yes, Dante cut his teeth on a Playstation console, as did GTA, Chris Redfield, and various modern FF characters (the series shifted in tone and direction starting with FFVII; don't believe me, play FF1-6 and tell me that things didn't change drastically when FF7 hit), but they only helped in establishing Sony as a big name gaming player when they were fresh and new, learning the ropes of the industry, and had a LOT to prove.

what did they do after the Playstation became a MONSTER success? they invested in first party developers.

they understood that Nintendo's biggest strength was in it's first party IPs. even when most 3rd party developers and publishers abandoned Nintendo for the greener pastures of the Playstation camp, Nintendo still chugged along, and still does to this day, no matter what you may think of their current "abandoning" of the very gamers that MADE them what they are today.

Sony knew they couldn't rely on third parties forever. do you think they want to be known as the "Final Fantasy console?" or the "Metal Gear" console? no. they'd much rather be known for the company that brought you Gran Turismo, God of War, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, SOCOM, Twisted Metal, etc etc. and you know what? they ARE.

what is Microsoft going to be known for? the "Halo console?" that's definitely one. but what else do you got? know for Xbox LIVE? that's a good one, but what else? oh yeah, they're known as the guys who buy up every 3rd party dev they can just to seem relevant in the eyes of the mainstream gamer. that's not one i think they really want to have on their resume.

i was very disappointed in their E3 showing, because, once again, they showed their complete disinterest in this gaming industry outside of purely making profit. they announce PARTNERSHIPS with folks like Netflix, instead of striking out on their own, forging their own way, creating and innovating, bringing experiences that are ONLY available on the Xbox 360 for whatever reasons (not necessarily hardware related, but from unique, original SOFTWARE).

when you have Sony hitting with HOME, Little Big Planet, and pushing technical envelopes with games like Killzone 2, pushing what can be done on a console in online gaming with Resistance 2's 60 player matches and 8 player co-op, you have to wonder, "WHERE is Microsoft's resolve? WHY are they even in the gaming industry if all they are going to do is sit back and "copy (and i use that word VERY loosely; it's business, there's nothing wrong with copying)" things like Buzz, Singstar, Mii's, etc, etc.

i'm from the camp that doesn't expect every single game to innovate and revolutionize the genre, but, hey, you have to have GAMES first to do that.

Sony didn't rely on 3rd parties at last years E3, when they shut up the entire gaming populous by revealing Killzone 2 in all it's real time glory, when everyone thought that there was NO WAY in hell it would look like the target render. that was FIRST PARTY work. when they wowed the gaming press, and gamers alike at GDC by showing off Little Big Planet, that was a second party company, but it could have gone ANYWHERE. Sony saw the potential in LBP, and backed it financially. they surprised everyone at E3 when Sucker Punch revealed, not Sly Cooper PS3, but a brand new IP, marking Sony's real entrance into the open world Sandbox genre. they didn't rely on exclusive downloadable content to push their machine, and show what it's really made of. no matter WHAT console MGS4 landed on, it would be pushing that console at the time of it's release, so it wasn't just Sony hoping MGS4 would make their console relevant (but it didn't hurt, did it?lol)

like they say, if you want something done, you gotta do it yourself. just about everything that the gaming media, and gamers at large have seen on the PS3 that impresses them the most, has come from first or second party devs, with IPs owned by Sony:

Killzone 2
Little Big Planet
Infamous
White Knight Story
Resistance 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift

what has Microsoft shown, owned by THEM, that is really pushing the 360? nothing, really.

Gears of War? owned by Epic, meaning Gears of War 3 could go to the PS3 IF Epic wanted it to.
Bioshock? coming to PS3.
Mass Effect? owned by Bioware, who is owned by EA; the sequels, and even a special edition first one, are likely coming to the PS3.

outside of the Halo, Fable, and Banjo franchises, what is MS doing that is really pushing their console to it's limits, and expanding on it's potential?

their press conference was, honestly, quite lackluster, and it took Square-Enix to bail them out with that brilliant Final Fantasy XIII coup. that's simply the truth.

i pose this question to everyone: if Final Fantasy XIII had NOT been announced for the Xbox 360 at the end of MS's press conference, and it simply ended when the Square-Enix guy walked off the stage, would you have been this excited about what they showcased? would message boards be alight because of Avatars, the new dashboard (which i like, personally), and Lips?

we didn't learn much new about Gears 2. Fable 2 is Fable 2 (which me and my fiance can't wait to get our hands one), and Fallout 3 is coming to the PS3 also.

if it wasn't for FFXIII, would MS's E3 showing have been something to talk about?

The whole game can fit on one disk if they just make the movie part down loadable like say a netflix movie? I mean really it's fixed that quickly! technically it's all audio tracks since the games uses in game graphics anyway. The mac and all of that can easily be changed on the disk just like the controller he holds. Just name the dell that replaces it with MAC and it will load just like the other assets. It would even make me chuckle if they left the PS3 propaganda in there. He could just replace expensive and be done.

Final Fantasy XIII is not XBox exclusive. GTA was not XBox exclusive. If they get MGS4 it has been and gone on PS3.

The quality of the game. M$ has a history of making alot of stuff but lack the quality of it, and for us Ps3 owners we don't want the multiplats dumbed down to the Xbox360s level. In other words that means making the game shorter/uglier just because of the DVD-9 format.

This was already discussed before the ps3 versions release, the bluray discs space wasnt enough for the first virsion of the game, is had to be compressed to fit the 50GB discs, xbox360s 9GB dvd9's obviously cant hold that so the only option would be to make it a multidisc video game, lets face it it wont happen unless microsoft feels like dealing with a 6 disc game, big hassle for microsoft, even bigger hassle for gamers, just because final fantasy is being put on the 360 dosent mean other exclusives are, it just means game developers feel they should share games with all consoles, depending on how easy it would be to do so.

You realize that Final Fantasy XIII probably won't come out in America before 2010 right? And if Metal Gear Solid 4 finds its way onto the 360 it probably won't be until after Christmas 2008.

By January 2009 Metal Gear Solid 4 could have quite possibly SHIPPED over 6 million units world wide, considering that it SHIPPED 3 million to a world wide demographic in 2 weeks.

Basically the point I'm trying to make is that both of these announcements, while shocking, seem initially important but when actually analyzed and looked at from a non bias point of view actually seem quite moot. If Final Fanasy 13 does not appear in front of a Western audience until late 2009 or maybe even 2010 the outlooks for Playstation and 360 remain unchanged for the remainder of this year and probably most of 2009 as well.

Similarly, anyone that thinks that Metal Gear's debut on the 360 will somehow outsell the playstation version really isn't looking at the facts. When broken down demographically Microsoft really only has one strong market to push Metal Gear Solid, and that's North America. Also considering that this game probably won't release in North America until January 2009 at the earliest I really don't see throngs of people rushing out to buy the same game that's already seen one christmas shopping season in North America.

So, in conclusion, if Microsoft wants it they can have it, but just wait till everyone's already enjoyed the hell out of it =) lol

microsoft for this poaching strategy. its not a really progressive strategy ... so really all they've done is minimize the differentiation between a 360 and a ps3 .. they're really in this to drive Sony out and reap the $$ rather than to progress video games as a form of entertainment and art. I don't care if MGS4 goes multi or not. I've finished it several times and i just loved it. The problem is that MGS4 answers every question that stayed on other MGS.

And all other MGS were on Playstation consoles.
Metal Gear Solid released on Playstation, came long after on PC then had a remake on Gamecube.
Metal Gear Solid 2 released on Playstation 2 then after on Xbox and PC.
Metal Gear Solid 3 released on Playstation 2 only.
Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops released on Playstation Portable only.

Meaning that almost all of the MGS series fanbase is Playstation-related.

The only series of Playstation that the full story of Metal Gear Solid was the Playstation series. So in my opinion, if you would love so much playing MGS4, you would play it on PS3, it's just a matter of good sense.

In my opinion, releasing Metal Gear Solid 4 on Xbox 360 is useless and only an opportunity for Microsoft to piss Sony and its fanboys off. Not because MGS4 is the ultimate game of the series or because it's the last AAA game released.
