1UP Previews: Killzone 2 - 'Honestly, we were somewhat surprised that Killzone 2 felt so accessible and engaging'

1UP writes: "Odds are that you won't hear veterans of the original Killzone bemoaning the myriad changes being made to its PlayStation 3 sequel. Several aspects of the first game simply didn't work, and developer Guerrilla Games has no qualms about rethinking fundamental design choices. "Killzone was our first game, so of course you're going to find some mistakes and glitches," says Visual Designer Roland IJzermans. "We really had to figure out what people liked and didn't like about the first game and then fix what was broken." Their first order of business? Add a jump button. "I had no idea that everyone thought jumping was so precious!" IJzermans says. Another big design shift pares the number of playable characters down from four to only one, fresh-faced protagonist Sev. "We wanted to have one stronger main character as opposed to having four separate heroes," says Game Director Mathijs de Jonge. "We feel that having one hero will lead to a better experience."

That doesn't mean that Sev's blasting through the Helghast home planet by his lonesome, though -- in both of the levels we've seen, he always has at least one surprisingly effective A.I.-controlled squad member at his side. You don't even have to worry about issuing commands to your buddies (even though it worked so well in Killzone: Liberation, Guerrilla thought it would be too clumsy in a first-person game), but you can revive them when wounded, help them over obstacles, and assist them in other context-sensitive ways. Implementing a new cover system also makes Killzone 2 a far more user-friendly experience. Much like in Gears of War or Uncharted, a simple button press anchors you to your nearest available cover point. From there, you can either lean-and-peek to fire at your target or instantly pop up and zoom in for a quick headshot. This new defensive dynamic radically changes up the game's pacing -- it's now definitely less run-n-gun and more stop-and-pop."

Meus Renaissance5763d ago (Edited 5763d ago )

I'm still not 100% convinced of this game but I pray that it plays as awesome as COD4 does - that is the bar for FPS's in my opinion. The visuals will look great, but I honestly found the recent videos from Sony boring?

Kleptic5763d ago

I sort of agree...last year at E3, and then at Leipzig, I was blown away by what was shown...at that point mostly because of the lighting and stuff...the new level is much more wide-open, yet still intense...but the pacing didn't seem quite right...at least when some guys played it...

that is what drives me nuts...most of the videos were some journalist playing through the level...and apperantly most journalists suck at video games...wildly flicking the sticks and just making everything look off...there was one video I found though of one of the game directors going through it...and he actually knew what he was doing, and showed off just how crazy the game is...

I don't know...I guess I am a little bored with that first level because I have watched so much of it...can't wait to see more at E3...it is very likely that Killzone 2 will get quite a few E3 awards...just as Cod 4 did last year...

SixTwoTwo5763d ago (Edited 5763d ago )

I read the new EGM preview and the guy who wrote it sounded genuinely impressed with the game. This is looking like a great game to start the new year with.

@Below... I know that

Time_Is_On_My_Side5763d ago (Edited 5763d ago )

What I don't get is that a lot of people were amazing by the Halo 3 video that didn't even show game play. While Guerrilla Games have only showed in-game graphics and game play.

Halo 3 Official Movie 2 HTML: http://www.gamespot.com/vid...

Killzone 2 Sony Gamers' Day 08: Pre-Release Walkthrough Part 1 HD HTML: http://www.gametrailers.com...

What's really ironic none of the teaser trailers never made it to the campaign it was all for show. So far Killzone 2 seems to be showing actual campaign game play. This game is actually tweaking the formula while most games remain the same. You mentioned Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare the only thing they actually changed was the setting. Overall Call of Duty game play mechanics virtually stayed the same. The video game industry is so ironic when it comes to games and developers. So with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare they only changed the graphics and added a better multiplayer component. Obviously the guns changed, gear, atomostphere...etc. I also want to add I don't hate Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare they just had a good formula from the start so they didn't really derive from it much.

SixTwoTwo5763d ago

For whatever reason, the reality is that any PS3 exclusive game will be held to much higher standards than other games. The same goes for features and add-ons and pretty much anything PS3 related.

Doppy5763d ago

The guy who did the article was Shane Bent-something, and he doesn't really play shooters which is a bad thing right off the back. But with him being impressed by one (meaning Killzone 2) I guess you can say that's a very good thing.

Time_Is_On_My_Side5763d ago

I would agree with that I know some people that would complain that Warhawk is an online only game. Then I see them play Halo 3, Gears of War, or Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare constantly online. Later on I'll hear Uncharted: Drake's Fortune has no online so they're not interesting. No matter what they're never satisfied but it's ok for Nintendo to do the same thing. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption took out the multiplayer completely. I'm not saying the sucks but I'm just stating what I see.

kanedaakira5763d ago

@ Some_One_Plays -

That video for K2 you linked to looks absolutely stunning. I am convinced that this game will blow me away.

I know its' not the most important thing in gaming but the graphics, realism and effects are top-notch and they all help to immerse the player in the action, This game has style and realism in buckets!

Max Power5763d ago

just to let you know that demo level was the 2nd level.

NDN_Shadow5762d ago

Shane Bettenhausen, the author of the article (and EGM article) doesn't normally play shooters. He isn't a shooter guy. I'm suprised 1UP/EGM sent him to preview the game. If you're going to give a preview, ask someone who knows the genre to do it.

It IS a little know fact that he "kinda" likes the PS3 more than some of his coworkers, which is cool. At least they sent a fan to preview it.

fusionboxer5762d ago

Then again if they simply remade Killzone Liberation for ps3 with awesome visuals then i'd be all for it.

That psp game addressed almost every problem seen with the first game. It added co op, vehicles, much better pacing, vastly improved AI, very fun and interesting level design, boss fights, better online infrastructure, polish out the hizzouse, DLC in the shape of entire missions, a longer campaign, squad control, better gameplay mechanics, varied enemies, a slight cover system and much much more.

The amount of improvement that was seen from Killzone 1 to liberation was amazing and it was only a psp game. I can only imagine what they'd do with a system with much more power and freedom. Most of the issues about killzone 1 were stated to be weaknesses in the ps2. Other then that I had a great time playing it and at the time preferred the visuals of killzones more war torn grizzly gray vekta to the colorful yelling gnomes in rainbow land called Halo.

But yea I should stop here. My excitement might peak too high and I might start to have hope for killzone 2. I better not T_T

HateBoy5762d ago

Agreed, completely, the ps3 is held to much higher standards than other current gen consoles in pretty much anything it. However, I don't think that's unfair considering the ps3 has +1 year of development behind it, an incredibly succesful past and in my opinion doesn't even belong in the same gen as the 360 and even less the wii. But not to worry, the ps3 is starting to meet those high demands and I have no doubt what so ever that it will continue to improve.

I'm just saying, the ps3 should have to meet higher standards, because it should be able to meet them.

This is the type of stuff I want to see

"Midlevel, you pause to destroy an enemy-infested building with a rail gun, aiming for explosive-rigged supports. When the structure finally collapses, the resulting effect is positively eerie -- huge chunks of wall tumble down, followed by billowing smoke clouds that realistically cascade, solemnly settling over the battlefield. Then, look up and you see leftover airborne debris glinting in the shafts of light streaming through the clouds. At this point, you're probably not hunting for seams in the polygons."

I also like how sony developers can get help from each other and learn tricks from one another.

Rock Bottom5763d ago (Edited 5763d ago )

They said "We've taken a few tricks directly from the Resistance guys at Insomniac, and we've even been talking directly to the God of War guys in Santa Monica."

I mean, WTF, they have been taking tricks from Santa Monica, those guys didn't finished GOW2 till feb 2007, so they have been working on GOW for 1 and a half year max, yet they already they know more about the PS3 than KZ2 devs?

The GOW guys are awesome.

Grahammad5763d ago

Or it could be that they've been concentrating on things other than what Guerrilla has been? Or maybe they are talking more conceptual coding? Either way, yes, the Santa Monica guys do rock as do I believe Guerilla, Insomniac and many others. I think its great they are sharing ideas and tech the way they are, it can only benefit everyone, right?

mesh15763d ago

GUYS so i want to get this game when its released in 2009 but im not to sure as the last killzone was not great tbh and im wavering and on this 1.up preview there is this quote.

"The presentation and attention to detail are key. The game doesn't look as good as the 2005 trailer, naturally, but it looks close to as good as any other console shooter. We'd say that currently Gears of War tops it, and a few other titles are on the same visual level, but the game looks extremely nice."

this make me think has the game been scaled back or what im confused haven't they been in dev or 4 years ?

beavis4play5763d ago

and gears doesn't come close to KZ2. 1. in gears all the surrounding enviroment is blurry and the distance you can see is hindered by some type of....fog? then there is the characters. yea, they look good but they also look like sprites. there doesn't seem to be any depth to them. then there is the characters in gears...very comical, i mean, this game should be called "wrath of the world wrestling federation".
and what's up with 360 games in general? halo looks like halo2 which looks like halo3. now gears looks like gears 2 which certainly will look like gears 3 since they'll be using the already dated looking UE3.
tell you what mesh, when KZ2 hits; you show up for the threads, cause i can use the laugh.

Grahammad5762d ago

Wow mesh, seriously... you don't think it's sad that you have to resort to making up your own quotes to attack a game that otherwise is getting rather positive previews? I hate fanboys so much...

Own all others..... After playing MGS4 and seeing just a brief glimpse of the potential power of the PS3 i can see KZ2 being pure eye candy with audio bliss...

Cannot wait..

pwnsause5763d ago

just remember the first MGS4 trailer with a video of Kz2 2005 trailer at the end, "the cell processor is the key to winning the console war"-otacon HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHZHHAH AHA

Kleptic5763d ago

^^^ wrong zone dude...

and did you read the preview?...he actually said it was fun and engaging...

there are people that have accepted that this game will wreck everything else ever made visually, and audio wise...so simply grab hold of that generic 'gameplay' argument...

this game will be awesome...and we have only seen about 10 minutes of the entire game...

heyheyhey5763d ago

@idiot above me

yeah exept that every preview so far has said that KZ2 has great gameplay too

doh, open zone for you dumbass

The Wood5763d ago

bukkakalypse's 1st comment. well at least he's a consistent troll

deeznuts5763d ago

"with terrible gameplay..but i guess you dont care about that..who needs gameplay while you're watching bluray movies right?"

Forget reading the article, did you even read the headline above?

looks like someone has drank too much bukkake ...

Sevir045763d ago

"with terrible gameplay..but i guess you dont care about that..who needs gameplay while you're watching bluray movies right?" enough with the belly aching. and swearing the game will be nothing more than eye candy. personally the reason why soo much attention to detail is on the visuals is because the media was looking for a reason the kill this game and Sony. the trailer from 05 showcased what the target. and GG has delivered to shut people up. all everyone was saying for the last 3 years was the PS3 will never have visuals and we will never see anything this good. proven wrong. technically speaking. KZ2 has gone leaps and bounds over the first KZ. you can see it. many are saying it's COD4 with a cover system, They couldn't be more wrong and far from the truth.

COD4 is nothing more than a mindless run and gun effort with beautiful visuals. its a good game but nothing more than that. the efforts here are making the game more engauging and less mindless. Stopping pausing and covering like a Real world war sceanrio is how it should be. Strategic First person shooters are so rare these days. even Resistance:FOM was similar to Call of duty 4.

and calling it terrible when you haven't played it is making you sound like an idiot.

every game preview site said this game is shaping up to be a monster success. especially with this title being heavily being outsourced to make it the best in Sony's catalog.

Insomniac, Incog, NaughtyDog, Sony Santa Monica, Sony Liverpool. and Japan. you simply cant deny the outside talent going into one title.

this is all the fankids, fanboys, baised haters and media are all looking at. KZ2. nothing else matters to them but that this game flops. and thats what all of them are counting on.

it's easy to be pessemistic when they didn't do too hot.

but at the same tiome. bungie wasn't that hot until halo. and 2k games/irrational wasn't OMG untill bioshock, with system shock 2 being a cult favourite if it could even be called that remotely.

simply quit it. hold of judgement untill feb 09 when it graces the PS3.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro42d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7242d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_42d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Motorstorm

Profchaos41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2341d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200042d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin42d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole42d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix42d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198942d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor346d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar346d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg345d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149345d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138346d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim346d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC346d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138346d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle346d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

Top 20 Best PlayStation 3 Games (20-11)

Alex DS. from Link Cable Gaming writes: "Is the PlayStation 3 retro? This is a surprisingly hard question to answer as the system definitely has the age to be considered retro, having launched in 2006, over 15 years ago now. But with it being home to so many massive games, many of which still hold up today and in fact were released for the PlayStation 4 when that console was released, make the PS3 a retro console that doesn’t feel retro."

shinoff2183717d ago

No ps3 is not retro. I dont even consider ps2 era retro. All imo.

shinoff2183717d ago

Typically, the term retro is given to items which are at least 20 years old (but not yet 40 years old).

Quick google search

badz149717d ago

No the PS3 is not yet a retro console. But if you're gonna put 1 game from a series in this list, then LBP2 should be there instead of the original, Motorstorm PR is also an overall better game than the 1st game and to put Tools of Destruction over A Crack in Time is a blasphemy when ACiT is the best game in the series.
