Far Cry 2 Console Versions "unspectacular and even drab in points"

A new hands-on was released by eurogamer.net. Besides the standard gameplay commentary, eurogamer had something interesting to say about the graphical differences between PC, PS3, and 360. Seems the versions aren't as "equal" as everyone has been saying they are.

"Far Cry 2 is also a beautiful game, at least on PC. Clever shading based on layers not textures means the game can scale to your PC, and the powerful demonstration machine displayed a crisp, sun-drenched, coherent and detailed landscape; one both functional and flattering, given the decision to all but scrap a HUD. Requirements will be typically lower than bitter rival Crysis, we're told, but Far Cry 2 will happily get the most out of even the most monstrous rig. Redding describes the console versions as comparable to a "medium load-out on PC", and warns us that, "graphically you're going to notice slight differences". Which we did. The Xbox 360 was the better of the two with its anti-aliasing, but both looked unspectacular and even drab in points. Far from ugly, mind you."

I can understand why the xbox version sucks.

But, what about "The Cell"?
What about "The Power of the PS3"?

Shouldnt developers be coming into their own now...

...or is all the PS3 hype, just lies.

Edit: @ Below....give me another week

:)

sonarus5763d ago

You have more bubbles than me now:(...i hate you

GiantEnemyCrab5763d ago

haha Breakfast I see what you did there.

Like Sonarus said, I am not really surprised. I was always skeptical they could achieve what they did with the PC version on consoles.

Still has some time left to polish it up more so I won't write it off yet.

My hopes are on Warhound.

morganfell5763d ago (Edited 5763d ago )

It is Eurogamer. They are not happy unless they are bashing some title on just about any platform. They are the VGChartz of game previews and reviews.

@eddierivera below,

This game is nothing like Far Cry. For one thing no surprise Island of Dr. Moreau crap.

romaink5763d ago

and why would the xbox version suck? please enlighten us

Breakfast5763d ago

"The Xbox 360 was the better of the two with its anti-aliasing, but both looked unspectacular and even drab in points."

Feel enlightened?

cyclindk5763d ago

Only the developers that actually take the time to learn the PS3s unique architecture will acquire the ability to make better games, it isn't magic or something where time passes and the games just get better on their own; most half-ass developers will stay that way and perhaps the PS3 Far Cry 2 team is just one of those teams...

THUNDERMARE5763d ago

Breakfast, that's Eurogamer, dont take it so serious, their review record on PS3 games isnt that unbiased if you ask me.

Panthers5763d ago

Ya Eurogamer threw that little comment in there on purpose. It wasnt needed especially since they have no proof. They are extreamly biased and I cannot take them seriously after their MGS4 review.

AbdullaMTR5762d ago

nothen hype the ps3 really powerfull i mean look at killzone 2 and mgs4 it depend on the developer and the technology of it got to be understand they have to use the spe's if they r not use it why they say the ps3 is not capable 4 there game bioshock was one of them and now its on ps3. at the 1st they said the ram was limit but now where is the ram limit in klzone 2 and ps3 can do better than killzone 2, any lazy devloper will make an excuse 4 there garbage game on the console that why u bleave its hyped

Statix5762d ago

Wait a sec, here... ONE, solitary website gives some negative impressions on the console versions of Far Cry 2, while basically every other site spoke of how similar they looked to their PC counterpart, and you're going to just give the benefit of the doubt to Eurogamer? People just love negative news, I guess.

NathanGra5762d ago

Okay. I've read this a lot in reviews, articles, etc. Why is it that PS3 games (when it comes to multiplatform titles) are bested by Xbox 360 versions? I understand the POTENTIAL for PS3 hardware and that if developers solely focus on its unique architecture then it can produce some unrivaled things (MGS4 is all I have to say). But what about multiplatform games? Will it always be bested (if only by a hair's margin)? And WHY do I keep seeing this? Any info is appreciated.

MADGameR5762d ago (Edited 5762d ago )

This is their first time messing with the PS3. They've been too used to developing for the X Box consoles. So ofcourse a noob is'nt going to know how to use the power of the PS3. Its true and we see that these guys are new to the PS3 because Killzone 2 IS proof that PS3 is indeed B3y0nd the X Box 360.

Remember, its not the final build, i would never expect the console versions to rival the pc version, but i would atleast expect the two console versions to be look the same,

mesh15763d ago

AH SO the 360 vesion is the better of the consoles as said in thi sarticles well im a ps3 owner and gwetting a 360 in a couple of days so i think ill get the 360 version then.

Arsenic135763d ago

Farcry Predator for 360 had crap graphics but it was still fun as hell. This only one source saying this, ill wait till comparisons show.

eddierivera5763d ago

I dont see how part two is even worth talking about in this article. Also, How can this guy say games look better with the anti aliasing on the 360 when I see games like Metal Gear, Uncharted, Burnout, COD4, and GTA out on the ps3? This article is not only biased, but its is all just one guy's opinion, and this story should not be approved.

I just dont get where people think games are better on the 360. I would love to see the 360 pull off Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 on it. The 360 cant run them games on it. Sony's in house dev team is the best and most dedicated dev team in the video game industry. They try to make games as good as they can. Not just for profit, but also because they obviously want to make the best next gen experiance on any console.

Only Devs who want to make a quick buck make games better on the 360, cause its easier and faster to make. Thats why the 360 only has a couple of AAA exclusives. Fable 2 and Gears 2 are the only games that I see that could ever live up to the standard of what real next gen games on the ps3 have set. I honestly cant wait till E3 comes. God of War 3 is gonna be there, Killzone, Resistance,,, and I cant wait to see the look on all the xbox fan boys face when they show it.

LuHawk5763d ago

Yeah xbox fans will be to busy playing good games this year while you will be waiting for those Ps3 games to come out in 09 and beyond

badz1495763d ago (Edited 5763d ago )

what good game? you mean, Too Human??

PS3 has MGS4 already and that's simply GoTY stuff hands down! next will be LBP, SOCOM, Resistance2, Motorstorm2...all will be released this year! good luck trying to rival that lineup! I don't think Gears2 alone will be enough!

Aclay5763d ago

PS3 gamers have good games to play for the rest of this year as well: Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, Socom Confrontation, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Siren... all of those are solid game titles.

At least us PS3 owners already know that there is a solid lineup for 2009 when it comes to PS3 exclusives. Alan Wake seems like it is in limbo and will be released "when it's ready" even though it's supposed to be at this year's E3, Splinter Cell Conviction has been rumored to have went "Back to the drawing board" and is rumored not to come out until late 2009 or early 2010, so basically the only thing 360 owners can really count on for 2009 that's already known is Halo Wars. Oh yea, and at least Sony will have a bunch of games actually published by them in 2009 and not just a bunch of purchased timed 3rd party exclusives games like Microsoft.

psycho3605763d ago (Edited 5763d ago )

@edd take your fanboism to open zone..

On topic. Agreed first Far Cry was graphically very poor for, at that time, next gen console. It was more like the original xbox or ps2 title. But since they didn't have that much experience with 360 so that can be understandable. But now since both consoles have been out for quite sometime and with games like COD4, R2, Gears and for that matter BF:BC showing what these consoles can do then no need to give us console gamers a half baked game.

Farcry 3 and literally thats it! lol

GamingSinceForever400d ago (Edited 400d ago )

I recently tried 3 for the first time but the frame rate was a turnoff.

I liked 5 and 6 though.

banger88400d ago

If you have a Series X or S, the Xbox 360 version runs at 60 fps with fps boost. It's a shame the remaster doesn't.

isarai401d ago

2 and 3, pretty much the only ones i really enjoyed. 1 was amazing for the time but aged quite poorly. 4 has the elephant gun, all i can praise from any entry after 3 lol

cooperdnizzle400d ago

Ummmm 3 than stop.

Okay maybe two as well. But yeah probably 3 and then move on.

JEECE400d ago (Edited 400d ago )

Far Cry 2. People constantly rant about games now being too easy, holding your hand, having too many unnecessary RPG-lite leveling features, etc. People specifically complain about open world games being too focused on tons of collectibles and "checkmarks" that just waste time.

Far Cry 2 is an answer to all of those complaints. It was made by Ubisoft before they fell into all the traps discussed above (and before they started inserting towers into their games to defog the map). It has respawning enemies, weapons that degrade, and the collectible diamonds are very useful in the game (which you find in a similar way to the way you find shrines in BOTW with a radar system). The map you have is an in game item you pull out while playing, not a pause menu that is unnecessarily detailed. Also the enemy AI and physics are much better than later entries in the series.

It has a mixed reputation because people at the time said it was too hard, the weapon degradation was annoying, and then respawning enemies were annoying. FC2 came out in 2008, so this was before games like Dark Souls and BOTW had come out and made it cool to like these types of features.

XbladeTeddy399d ago

Far Cry 2, the one with the AI that find you through walls and trees, can one shot you from a mile away and have 100% accuracy? That was frustrating not fun because cheap AI.

JEECE399d ago (Edited 399d ago )

Uhh, I mean, it isn't one of these games where once the enemies have detected you they will magically forget you exist because you walked behind a wall or went into a bush. And yeah the AI isn't stormtrooper level accuracy. Again, these are positives, not negatives to me.

To be fair, I'm really directing this at the people most critical of "Modern Ubisoft" or "Modern Open World" design elements. Like the type of people who fawned all over Elden Ring because it had a clean UI because they are so burnt out by the "checkbox" type of open world design.

If you like those types of games, then a later FC game like 3 and especially 4-5 would be more your style.

Beyond: Two Souls on PS3 can compete with modern day graphics.

SonyStyled447d ago (Edited 447d ago )

Same as Killzone 2 and 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 3

jasonismoney447d ago

I wish this was entirely true, but you might want to load up Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 again.

SonyStyled447d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist446d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

Fist4achin447d ago

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled447d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE447d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

iNcRiMiNaTi447d ago

It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good

JEECE447d ago

In terms of art style it still holds up.

Far Cry 2 where your guns never ever jammed until you got into a gunfight is their best? I disagree.

MIDGETonSTILTS17569d ago

I liked 3 more.

The malaria angle was more annoying than immersive.

And, the enemy AI had too good of eyesight to allow any stealth. They’d spot you a literal half mile away, I hated it.

lonewolf10569d ago

Yeah, some weird mechanics for sure, some did really enjoy it, I certainly didn't.

bloop568d ago (Edited 568d ago )

The map was designed badly and an absolute pain to navigate from what I can remember too. You ended up having to go to the same few places all the time and there was a huge inaccessible area between them that you had to go around.

It definitely had the best physics system of the entire franchise, but a lot of the mechanics took the enjoyment out of it.

LordoftheCritics569d ago

It was fun for its time but a bunch of those systems today won't survive a launch weekend.

Profchaos569d ago

I'd say it was their most ambitious and had the best setting to date next to the original island.

But gameplay wise it was clunky and maybe it was released to early if the teams had modern systems to build it on the game would have been much better less corridors more open and less gaurd outposts that auto regen

Knushwood Butt569d ago

How do you use guns when not in a gunfight? Shooting trees?

lonewolf10568d ago

Yes and you could do that for hours in FC2 with a gun and it wouldn't jam, not hard to grasp is it.

Knushwood Butt568d ago

I see.

I haven't spent hours shooting trees.

I must try it.

Love Far Cry 2 on Infamous difficulty.

Hikoran569d ago

This should be an opinion piece. Not news.

Gwiz569d ago

Blood Dragon is much better.

Pedrof569d ago

Far Cry 2 may certainly not be the most "fun" game in the series but from a narrative standpoint it definitely is the most interesting of the bunch. FC2 couldn't be further away from the pointless fragfests that the following episodes turned out to be.
