SCEE Explains 2.40 Error, Sony Will Replace Bricked Machines

As you now know, Sony has presented us with firmware update 2.41, which is now free of any serious bugs and doesn't have the nasty capability of damaging systems like the original 2.40 update. However, even though we're good to go now, some are still wondering: what happened?

I imagine people disagree simply because no company should be expected to do repairs to a product outside of warranty, they do so as a matter of "good faith" but you shouldn't expect it. As for firmware bricking your console, I can't say this for certain but I imagine there is a clause that states you "download and use this firmware at your own risk" so if the firmware bricks your PS3 Sony is under no obligation to repair it because you agreed to those terms. I am not saying it is right or wrong, I am just saying that is how it is.

If you are unable to use a product under those terms then I suggest you sell your console and move on. There is no point buying an xbox 360 either because they have a similar clause with updates.

However I don't actually believe this is your problem because pretty much any post I read from you is in some form trying to bash Sony or cast them in a negative light. It seems that instead of praising them for promptly taking the old update down to limit the possibility of freezing more consoles, quickly getting to the root of the problem and fixing it, then replacing any consoles that did die, you would rather nitpick the only negative thing you could find. I'm glad they didn't do an MS and say "we still don't know what's wrong but we'll keep selling the product anyway to anyone that will keep on buying it". I didn't want to bring MS into this but it serves as a good example. No one planned to mess up PS3's but it happened and they are rectifying it as best they can. You need to grow up and lay off.

The admin data is not on the drive, it is on internal memory. The XMB does not run off the HDD, just so you know.

That's a good point SL1M, but from what I hear, formatting the HD was fixing the issue for people that were having trouble with the update. Weird.
Anyway, I imagine they'll just ship off new consoles to anyone who got a bricked one, then repair all the bricks they receive, slap some new shells on them and send them out to people who send PS3's in for repair in the future. They can speed up turn around time in the repair center that way so everyone wins.

It's data saved specifically for XMB use (for the accounts) that is stored on the HDD (hidden).

Yup. There's some flash memory in the system where the OS and any system settings are stored. That's why you can swap your HD without losing any of your settings. When Dark_Alex or someone manages to get access to it through the install other OS option you'll be able to do all kinds of sick sh*t with your PS3. To be fair to TheFreak the guy has a point, but it isn't just Sony, MS are at fault as well. I think alot of people have forgotten what owning a console is supposed to be about. It is supposed to be about no hassle gaming, put the disc in and play. However this generation has been the complete opposite with hardware failures, firmware bricking and a whole host of other problems.

I personally think both camps are being far far too lenient with thier respective companies. No it isn't great that sony got a new improved firmware out in a week, it should never have happened in the first place. Oh and before you bring RROD into it, yes I say the same thing about the 360 that thing should have been recalled and re-designed.

I'm glad Sony came out and actually tried explaining the root issue. Not that it makes the effected users any happier, but it shows there is a cause and effect. sony always does well as far as fw goes. In the rare event of a mishap, they're always quick to fix e.g. psp 4.0-4.1 and now 2.40-2.41...all fixed in a matter of days. They acknowledged the mess up and are reimbursing the ppl affected point is...THE DEFECT WAS FIXED...and it works perfectly a again.

I recall on some of the updates for the 360 that some consoles had been bricked and when the owners called the support line they we're basically told that it's not Microsoft's problem.

My dealings with the MS support line were average at best. You always ended up speaking to some individual who's second language was english and their accent was so thick I started to think english was my second language as well :S

People forget that part of a good purchase shoulis d be after sales support and Sony seem to have done a good job this round. However, my hat does go off to MS for their handling of the entire RROD issue. Sure its a bugger but at least they extended the warranty - many other companies may have not been so generous (albeit "generous" could be too stronger word in this instance).

Does anyone have any experience with the Wii support line or is that hardware simply less error prone?

My 60GB died 1 week before the update came out, and it cost me $150 to fix cause its out of warranty now. I hope it does not happen every 2 years like the ps2 did. The laser went bad on my ps2 3 times.

3 year extended warranty, and at a cost of $1 billion. They admitted problems with the 360 in July of 2007, when the 360 was launched in Nov. of 2005. Some 19 months earlier.

What was that....Sony solved their firmware update problem in ONE WEEK, and have offered those with bricked systems (very few), a replacement.

In December of 2006 a lawsuit from a “Kevin Ray” had been resolved under confidential terms. Microsoft then increased the 90 day warranty on 360’s to 1 year. Ironically, only 8 months later, they extend the warranty yet again over RROD issue.

And lets not even get started on the RROD issue. Microsoft claimed early on that Xbox 360’s failure rate was at an industry average of 3% to 5%, but we all know it was a lot higher.

I'm a supporter of the PS3 yes, but certainly no droid, bot, or fanboy or member of the SDF. I've owned most consoles over the years (360 include, until it broke). I just cant stand trolls, which is what you are. Be a gamer, what ever system you own, accept the fact there is competition, its good for the end consumer.

Lets look at your links.

1 & 4. Sony sued over PS2 chip - Specifics of the lawsuit are unclear, its thought that its down to the manufacturing process. But its for a patent that is nearly 20 years old. The fact that Toshiba is included in the lawsuit means that the technology is more than likely produced by them, so Sony may be exempt anyway. As it would be Toshiba that supply Sony , it would therefore be Toshiba that infringed on the patent.

2 & 5. Sony settled the case for its disc read error on the PS2. I won’t defend them on that one, because rightly so, it was a problem (no where near the size or extent of Microsoft RROD problem), but the lawsuit was right, and they paid for it, it didn’t affect the sales of the PS2 though did it?

3. Sony being sued over Buzz! trademark......oh come on.

Your reasoning: I guess its that companies get lawsuits, yes Microsoft do too, two of which are for the disc probs and RROD of the 360.

My original post was not supposed to be clever or original. (it was copied from you, so how could it be) It was supposed to be obvious that it was a copy, so that you would pick up on it (a child or even someone with a learning disability could spot that). I’m surprised it needed pointing out to you for you to comprehend that. The first post I made was showing that for every negative you tried to throw at Sony (one of which I agreed on), there were negatives that could also be made about Microsoft. The second post was to respond to 90% of your original links. However, you failed to respond and answer any of my links, instead just falling on a lame SDF jibe.

I’ve been a 360 owner (and still play on the 360 at friends), and have owned most consoles over the last 26 years. I don’t defend Sony when they mess up, but I give them praise when they do things right. Just as I will praise Microsoft for getting things right (like their online service), but won’t defend them on their mistakes (like RROD and their atrocious customer service). That’s called being unbiased, something that is obviously beyond you. Your last response is to a link you supplied, that of a post that had nothing to do with the subject matter of this article.

Hint for you, the subject matter your supposed to be discussing was about firmware 2.41, that Sony fixed from the glitch that was in 2.40. That glitch effected a small minority of uses, and the few bricked systems are being replaced. Most people, myself included didn’t have a problem. You’ve pulled the figure of $700+ million out of your arse for correcting the 2.40 update. Post me proof of this figure, oh you can’t because you made it up.

To respond to your off topic link, did you know that Sony announced before the PS3 was launched that they didn’t expect to turn a profit with the PS3 for a good few years down the road. That loss year in and year out is being reduced each financial year. They will slowly recover that cost via the PSP, PS2, PS3, their online downloads, their royalties from blu-ray, and the cell processor that is being used in a wide spectrum of work. Likewise, Microsoft’s division for the 360, which is only just starting to make a profit, will take years to offset the $6b expenditure for them coming into the console market with the original xbox. So what is the point your trying to make. There obviously wasn’t one, you just acted like a troll.

edit: It's good of Sony to offer to replace the systems affected by this at such in such a quick response rate. They could have put this off and denied it in typical Sony fashion, but instead they are doing what they should do which is taking responsibility for their mistakes.

PS3 no issues It has almost replaced my PC. Reason being I have two laptops and a PC(not the biggest fan of the PC). Every time I turn my PC on I have to wait to boot up, then log in, and then run my anti-virus, and then turn on my pop up blocker, etc,etc..

My PS3 gets me online in about 10 seconds and I can get my basic internet needs with out a hassle..

My daughters movies are on my PS3 she loves it..

Use mine for downloaded movs, my gaming and internet. Did the 2.4 update - no hassle. The number of bricked systems had to be real low. Sony did what they should, removed the update, and fixed it quickly, and give us it back all in 1 week. Good job Sony.
