2.40 HDD Bricking Caused by 'System Administrative Data'

PS3fanboy writes:

"It seems that there was a problem which "prevented a limited number of PS3s from activating properly after updating to version 2.40, when certain system administrative data were contained on the HDD." This has now been fixed with 2.41, though those who suffer from the problem (which prevents the PS3 from loading up the XMB) will not be able to access the new firmware update.

Instead, those who had problems with 2.40 will need to contact Customer Services and will receive a replacement PS3. 2.41 will prevent this problem happening to anyone else. The statement also reiterates that those who installed 2.40 successfully will not suffer from any issues."

Good to heard. Now, to download 2.41.

Not overly concerned by what caused the problem but the news of it's fix is welcomed.

Also, I thought the console simply suffered from freezing, forcing the user to manually reset it? If that is correct I'm not sure why the word "Bricked" is being used.

Pornlord5764d ago

I was under the impression that users couldn't get the XMB to load, forcing them to reformat the HD. I think it's great that they are replacing the PS3 (most likely though they are only reformatting the HD and shipping it back) because some people out there own one, but don't know how to take out the HD or reformat it or back it up or anything.

GodsHand5764d ago

Taking out the HD, is easy one screw (phillips screw driver). Backing up all you stuff is the problem. That said once you remove the HD, and replace it, your old hard drives is no longer linked to the system, which means, you have to format it again to use it.

Case in point - Back up what you can, before you replace your harddrive.
music/video/game saves are probably the only things you can back up, not the game itself, unless it's a PS1 game that you can transport to a PSP/memory card.

Thanks for the advice Godhand, but you misunderstood me. I know how to do it, I got a 320 gig in mine, I'm speaking in general terms as to why Sony is replacing some PS3's. Some people are scared to death to open any electronic device. Some people parents won't allow it, you get my drift.

They found the problem and fixed it

That's one more important fix needed, since BD player is the cause of 80% of ps3 crashes.

Pornlord5764d ago

I have 15 blu-ray discs, all of them work fine. Never heard of that being a problem. Unless by 80% of a VERY limited number of crashes. News to me.

wetowel5764d ago

Could you provide a link or something about this problem? cuz this is the 1st time im hearing about it.

Testo5764d ago

Yeah what?

I read about the an 1.5 update which was causing certain people trouble but I think blu-ray causing 80% of PS3 crashes is probably not true.

Mine froze due to the "news ticker" thingy. But no issues with old Blu.

LiquifiedArt5764d ago

Especially during a freeze or a glitch in a game. ALWAYS use the Power button in the front by (holding for 5 secs), unless it will not respond and only gives you a double beep.

Rageanitus5764d ago

Have yet to have it crash on me during playback.

Got the update this morning, took about 5 minutes to d/l, and another 5 to install. Worked fine for the most part. Did not have a chance to try anything tho.

IMO, they should enable the eject button to work when the system fails, I had to take apart my first system to get the game out.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

Tales Of Graces Ƒ Retro Review – Holding Out For a Hero

Gary Green said: Namco Bandai heard the call of many fans asking for the PlayStation release of Tales of Graces which was originally released seemingly exclusively for the Wii back in 2009. If you’re acquainted with the Tales series then Graces f won’t be something entirely new to you, yet if you’re a newcomer then you’ll find a plethora of gameplay mechanics and nuances that distinguish this series from other JRPGs. While the game finds itself following the traditional archetype of JRPGs, such as a somewhat clichéd story, Graces has something to offer to both veterans and newcomers alike.
