The highly anticipated 2.4 Firmware update for the PS3 has been taken off of the Sony servers.

Update seems to be working perfectly on my PAL 60gig model.

Strange this... I have had one game stall since march 2007 when I got my PS3. GTA4 always worked perfectly. I've only had problems with two games COD4 and Haze and these seemed to vanish over time.

Anyone out there with a PAL 60gig model that has had any firmware update problems?

I guess I lucked out big time then. I was at work and called home to my wife that has only touched the PS3 enough to put in a Blu-Ray movie. She did great, followed my instructions over the phone and downloaded the firmware, the installed it, I even walked her through getting the update for Super Stardust! When I got home last night, she had the TV turned on and waiting for me. I was playing SSHD and noticed a friend sign in, pressed the 'PS' button, went over to the Friends list and sent him a message, then went on to unlock 2 more trophies, we went back and forth for almost a 1/2 hr before he signed off. Everything is working perfectly for me. Even pressed the 'PS' button and went to the Play Station Store, it said I needed to exit the game for this to happen, I selected yes, and bam I was in the new store looking at the new views (anyone see how to set the default view, I like the list better).

Anyway, 2.40 working great for me, original 60g PS3 with a upgraded 200g drive in the USA.

ps, anyone know if that "fix" abount PS3's not booting up where you remove you hard drive, delete the partition, then stick it back into the PS3, let it re-format it as a new drive actually works?

The fact that Sony is trying so hard to catchup to xbox live specially with E3 around the corner when microsoft is probably going to announce the new gesture/motion interface and a couple of new enhancement it was only obvious... I am amazed that the thing even works for some consoles... Sony main issue is not that they are not good at what they do is that they have too many firmware updates... that increases the possibility of having issues... like this one... they should limit their updates to 1-2 a year... that way they can spend more time testing the damn thing... and even postpone if is not ready ala xbox live...

I'm not having any problems...The xmb lags a tad, but it doesn't bother me any.

However, I'm happy to see that Sony is on the ball. They are listening to our problems and solving them.

I was also curious why the 2.4 update wasn't on the offical PSblog....apparently this is why.

Pull off the blinders, I understand that things happens and the only way to truly find most of the bugs in a piece of software is to release it into the wild. for my 60 gig download when it was first available and was up to 2am MST playing SSHD I used the In game xmb a number of times i love it. I got to trophys so far and I am digging this "level up" idea a lot if anyone wants to add me its len1978

the older systems, I have a 60 gig from December after the November launch. I haven't noticed any bugs with 2.40 here, other than the XMB being a little laggy during game. By the way I was playing warhawk after the update and I was reading a message from a buddy, but during my messaging an enemy came up to me and started shooting, I was being hit but taking no damage. a fun little glitch that had the other guy a little hot and bothered.

Its easy to root for Sony. Sure, it sucks that a small number of people are having problems with 2.4, but for the rest of us, it works fine. I have tried CoD4 just to make sure. I have a day 1 60gb on Verizon FiOS. It plays the same as it always has. It is smart of them to pull it. Even if it is only a small number of people affected. This same stuff happend with a live update awhile back, so don't think its only Sony who has problems with updates.

I understand 99% of the you had no problems with the update. I actually got the freeze problem after updating this morning. No biggie for me, just reformated the HDD and now it's running fine with 2.40 :)

I guess Sony managed to reproduce the problem in-house and pulled it. I would have done the same.

i updated last night, and so far, i haven't had any problems. i'm at work now, so i haven't been able to play it, but i also haven't gotten any emails from my fiance telling me the PS3 is broken (she's currently obsessed with Overlord; she HATES the game, but she can't stop playing it...weirdo), so i'm just going to assume it's still functioning properly.

i'm a little tired of the constant FUD and BS spreading from the media (ie, joystiq and kotaku), and i'm not saying issues haven't occurred, it does happen, but it also doesn't seem to be very widespread. i'm sure a fix will be up soon, and i'm not going to worry about if my PS3 is suddenly going to explode because of firmware 2.40.

i also never got the infamous GTAIV freezes and other glitches either. maybe my PS3 is magic. more than likely, the issues aren't as widestpread as the internet(read: Kotaku) loves to make it seem.

I have a magic PS3 too. It has a fine layer of fairy dust (actually thats just regular dust) that protects it from inept updates and games with bugs. I skipped the GTA freezes and look to be doing the same again here.

I understand if a few pro XB sites have to blow this crap out of proportion, they have nothing else to do. The only game worth buying on XB this whole year was NG2 and they stopped talking about that almost as soon as it was out. Apparently they have short attention spans

Damn, feel sorry for the people this affected. No problems with my 60GB UK PS3. In fact have just finished playing Stardust HD and have now unlocked 12/17 trophies and leveled up to level 2 and a half! Woo hoo! lol Played Uncharted then MGS Online and still no problems yet.

As others have said i have noticed the lag in call of duty 4 today, also me and a few of my friends had problems with our mic's when we first updated, making us unable to speak but after a re-sync and a restart there were back to working again thankfully. Other than that 2.40 is great its been so much easier to arrange matches in COD4 and tell people that im changing games ect.

I've never thought about it before, but what if the update requires the user to have so much free HD space in order to unzip and reinstall itself properly. The update would appear to be working badly for some people, and better for others. My personally experiance was that in a clan of ten on COD4. Not one of us could host without everyone person except the host having a red bar of connection. Online was just as bad. No problem updating our two 60GB UK PS3's (one with an upgraded HDD).

However CoD4 has ferocious lag since the update (not tried any other online games).

Did have the three beeps reset when trying to update SSHD, but it got there eventually - although I was a bit surprised that the 'update' for this game was actually bigger than the original download! - I assume they just released a complete new version (4.00) instead of patching the older versions.

It's disappointing that people are experiencing problems (and that XBox360 fanboys are jumping all over it - what short memories they have!), but it's impossible to test on every configuration of hardware and these things happen. As anyone who has ever built multiple PC rigs will know... sometimes weird things happen on one of 'em even if they all use the same components.

Good on Sony for reacting quickly though - damage limitation is a good thing.

You bring up a very good point though. Being someone who has a lot of PC hardware experiance, I can tell you that there have been many times building multiple computers and one or two just for whatever reason do not want to act like the rest even though they use the same hardware.

Sony now has what 4 different PS3 versions out there in the wild. Some with the emotion engine, some without, and while I think they should have stuck to the original two, we probably would not have the lower prices without the later two.

I do feel for those who did update and got a malfunctioning system from it.

I updated my 40gig today, then got the patch for SSHD, as soon as I loaded up the game my PS3 crashed...just went to a blank screen. Since I turned it back on, I've had no problems except SSHD took longer to load up than usual. Love the new trophy system...I only got 6 so far, on my highest scoring game of stardust ever...which got me like 7,400th place...that is sad. I'm nervous now about the update, I hope it didn't hurt my PS3 in anyway.

Try 3 MS firmware updates that have caused issues such as this, including 1 that bricked multiple systems that forced owners to send the unit in and 1 that corrupted the log in...anyone remember that? Right after they updated the blade system to include the new marketplace blade? Yeah, MS never messes up.

At least with this, it sounds like all you need to do is remove the hard drive and delete the partition then reinstall the drive into the PS3 and let it format the drive.

This is a problem with firmware and dashboard updates in the new generation. 360 had this issue with a dash update, now Sony has it with a Firmware update. There must be someway users can protected better.

On a side note, I don't consider it 100% Sony fault if the following is true. If the bricking occurs due to poor internet connection resulting in not getting a full file, then ISP is at fault too. It is Sony's fault for not building in the system to revert back to an old firmware. Now I need to get SSHD and have some fun with trophies.

the 2.4 update has been pulled due to incredible numbers of downloads.

Sony has fixed the problem but are taking it away from other websites to reduce the flooding.

Its really not a problem its just a flood of downloads from too many websites at the same time.

Hmm Ive had no problems here i have an 80 gig that came with motorstorm. It updated my system and works fine. Only when i tried updating super stardust HD it failed and the system reboot but once it rebooted it updated stardust and everything works fine.

people reporting drm being inactivated removed such that PSN titles are playable on all accounts on the machine. frankly i didn't know there was such a limit to begin with. Could be just as valid a reason why it was pulled.

Me and my mates 60gs are fine, both updated yesterday. I've played most of my games ranging from oldest to newest, all worked fine. Superstar dust works fine with trophies, after update, and most of my online buddies were on at some point yesterday. So i'm thinking why such a select group of ps3's are braking...

Not only do you have to spend hours downloading games into your beloved system. Which only a couple of them are even worth playing.(Drakes Fortune and MGS) I spent my time playing on my 360. I've had no issues with my 360. Live Rocks.... COD4 Rocks.... I've been to the top of the MOUNTAIN!!! OH YEAH, MY XBOX BRETHERN!!! You see the ps3 is not the ps2. Hell its not even as good as the first real iteration, which was by far the best of what sony had to offer. Face it the PS3 never even got off the ground. Halo killers - Where? You have nothing. Keep playing your Lair, Haze and all those supposed great titles and I'll be playing the greatest online experience in LIVE.... with GEARS OF WAR 1 and soon to be 2. HALO's 2 & 3. COD4. TOO HUMAN. DIRT.TALES OF VESPERIA. GUITAR HERO. ROCK BAND 1&2,and a little late but GREAT.. BIOSHOCK, CRACKDOWN, MASS EFFECT, NINJA GAIDEN 2,and lets not even get into BACKWARDS COMPATABILITY. Not to mention GTA4 which I was at home happily playing while you were all downloading somemore and then crying because it wouldnt play on your crappy cat rip off of XBL. I just find it funny...cause this was the same response we saw from all the 360 owners when RROD came about. Many would post "I have had my console since launch and no issues" Yet as we all know it was a major issue.

So just because this didnt effect you doesn't mean its not an issue. Just pray that it doesn't become an issue for you down the line given it seems the solution is reformatting your hard drive and losing your saves, etc...

there is no evidence that ps3 owners have to live in any such fear "down the line" ... either the update bricks the system or not *at installation* (and over at neogaf only one poster bricked out of a reported 540 responses). Post installation there have been no reports of an installed 2.4 update bricking a system. your claim is based on *nothing*

Seems to be working fine for me, msg friends when I'm ingame and fixing my mic is all good(the music as well). but I had really hope I could adjust more setting without having to leave game....but still great.

I'm glad they listen to ps3 owners and are trying to fix it. better to get a solid patch out then a half working one.

It is hard for me to understand why so many people feel the need to defend or justify issues that happen with the ps3, xbox 360, or Wii. I have not even tried to download the firmware (was going to actually do it this morning until I seen the article)....to be honest, I am not even sure what the big deal is in getting the firmware. Hear me out...I am not saying that it is not a big deal......but I am saying that I am not drooling over it like most.......and perhaps it could be that I have been experiencing these features on the 360 for a while now. The fact is, there is a thread running on the official playstation website about it.....and it is fact that Sony has taken the firmware down....if you look through the thread you will even see videos of what people are experiencing.

With that said, could it be the firmware?...or could it be that for some ps3s the firmware did not download properly (as some reported being knocked off a couple of times...probably due to the amount of people being on the server), and as a result people were updating with an incomplete firmware.......thus causing the problem.

And the final question is..how will Sony respond to the problem?......we have seen Microsoft response (3 year warranty).
