RUMOR: Industry Rumblings Regarding Resident Evil 5 And Timed Exclusivity

Who cares? All that means is that when it DOES come out for the PS3 it will have extra content and extra development time just like all the timed exclusives in the past with RE5.

If I only owned a PS3 I would be sad that I would be getting the game at a later date, but with the knowledge there will be extra content and more time spent tweaking the game then that more than makes up for it.

At least if you own a 360 you know you will be getting alot of games before you can get them on other systems. I know it sucks if you only own a PS3 but if you own both then it doesn't hurt you either way.

I kind of like timed exlusivity because it means that the developers can focus on one system and get it out sooner on that one system then having to try to get both versions ready at the same time.

but you must always do your best to play your own game and not be overly focused on the game of your opponents. People thought sony slipped with GTA but the bigger picture, which may stun a few, has yet to be seen. If this is not the way sony want to fight this way then fair enough but getting into bidding wars when you have your own first/second party devs to look after is counter productive. MS are allowed to splash the cash if they want because they dont have the strength and depth of sony's dev teams. MS have however brought some spice into this battle and are trying what they can to win. There are different ways of winning things and MS may feel this is one of their best shots

paying a team to develop a game and paying for exclusivity when the game is near complete are two different kettles of fish. FF and tekken are the two that spring to mind but whether sony paid them or the devs just showed loyalty is debatable. Maybe we'll never know

Whenever Microsoft acquires an exclusive, be it timed or not, it is usually good, compared to Sony's. Got to admit, they've been pretty good so far in that regard.

If this is true I'll go crazy! Unfortunately I could see Capcom taking an offer like this. The dont seem to do full exclusivity but Timed maybe. I have an Xbox as well as PS3 but I just wanted this one on my PS3 where I would have felt more at home with the game.
Worst comes to worse I could always get it for my 360 because being the impatient git I am I will not wait. I bought a Gamecube for Resi 4, Resi 0, And Resi 1 remake. It'll suck not to have the choice on day one though

While it would be heartbreaking to PS3 owners if true, right now, it appears that it simply is not. I understand that everything in the corporate world is subject to change, but I looked at the E3 press releases and on Capcom's own website, and RE5 is listed for the PS3 and 360!

Well said. I was a Sega Saturn user back in the day. After playing the first Tomb Raider, I was excited about the second Tomb Raider. God I was upset when I found out that Sony Paid Eidos for exclusivity on Playstation. Actually Sony paid for many exclusives. Mortal Kombat 3 was another big exclusive that Sony paid for at the time. Crash Bandicoot started off as a multi-platform game until Sony paid for exclusivity.

Microsoft is just playing the game that Sony started.

this could be one of those software related announcements Microsoft is primed to make at E3. still, one has to wonder just why Sony doesn't pay for exclusives, especially since it's lost so many as it is? right now with the exception of MGS4, the only reason there is to own a PS3 is first-party exclusives, and those are spaced way too far apart. all third-party games are either exclusive to the 360 (how the HECK did Sony lose Star Ocean 4?), timed exclusive to the 360, or have exclusive Live-centric features that make buying them for the 360 much more tantilizing. it would really suck if Res Evil 5 is timed-exclusive to the 360. i really want this for my PS3 for Dualshock 3. but if the PS3 is not seeing it day and date then it'll be the 360 version for me.

FF13 for example, they won't tell, but Sony will never let that go anywhere now that they have a firm grip on it. (The proper FF's,not FF11 and Sub-Par Wiiware titles. I feel they can do much beter. Mind you though,Revenant Wings and crystal Chronicles are both great)

Resi-4 was released on the Gamecube for like an entire year before it ever saw the light of day on the PS3. I doubt that the timed-exclusivity would be THAT long, but even so that type of deal didn't kill the PS2 and it certainly wont be damaging the PS3 as long as their other 1st-party titles released this fall and holiday season hold up as good as they are claiming.

Oh well, if it is timed exclusive on 360, I can only assume they will focus more on the 360 version first and then the PS3 version will get extra content just like Lost Planet, Bioshock and potentially Mass Effect and Dead Rising. The only way I could not hate capcom for timed exclusivity is if they indeed add extra content, after all there will likely be space on the disc to add it.

Hey, at least Resident Evil 5 games have always been linear, so it wouldn't matter if the game is huge, since they could make it fit on plenty of DVDs. Unless Capcom feels like revolutionizing the series again by making it an open world, but I doubt it, considering it would be an unnecessary investment since RE5's success will be built upon RE4's, especially since Capcom loves to milk everything. I'm guessing Capcom will do the open world, but for RE6 or 7, where Xbox 720 will finally be able to play an open world with no constraints.

Who only own a ps3. I think this would be big for Microsoft going into the holiday season, seeing that they need to do something about the ps3 catching up to them. I as a big fan of RE from playing it on my PS and PS2 find this a big deal if it were to happen. But the question is, would capcom give up the chance of losing millions of sales on ps3 if they were to do this? Because for all I know is if u take away a big franchise from loyal fans for another system, fans can counter u by not buying the game if they were to pull such a stunt. Do remember, if it wasnt for the ps2, RE4 would have sold bad on the gamecube which it didnt do very well sales wise, and remember it was supposingly exclusive to gamecube and was ported over to the ps2 just to sell a couple of millions of copies, so this is why I dont think it will happen. But if it does, that is too bad for die hard fans who will be dissappointed and only own a ps3. Glad I got all 3 systems for crap like this if it happens.

And honeslty, I don't mind because I have just as many quality exclusives on my Xbox as I do multi-platfrom titles, and I doubt anyone can deny the Xbox's current library is a bit more robust then the other consoles on the market. Evolution Studio and BigBig was recently acquired and all the orginal staffs stayed and led the team and they didn't change the culture of the company at all. I really respect them for doing that as oppose to EA which eradically changes the studio culture and even closing them down one by one after acquisition.

Every single studio you see today stretching from Japan Studio to Santa Monica Studio to Cambridge are acquired one by one from the days when Santa Monica was still 989 studios; when the PS1 had was 100% 3rd party support. The past 15 yrs or so, they have grew studios to 1500 developers now worldwide.

They have also forged some strong friendships along the way like Insomniac, Read At Dawn, Eat Sleep and Play, Nippon Ichi, and so on to help them along the way.

Do not forget that Sony was brewed from betrayal by Nintendo after spending millions of dollar on R&D for PlayStation's CD technology; Sony knows better than any console maker out there that they have to stand on their two feets and be self sufficient. 3rd party and even 2nd party may betray you along the way; they did well by spending money not on exclusives but on studios and their IPs (such as MotorStorm is now Sony IP).

If anyone..Sony would be the one to sense betrayal and Kaz knows it way too well...as he saw the furry of his mentor, Kataragi went to the then Sony CEO and beg him to give him the go-ahead to make the Sony PlayStation 1. I can understand having timed exclusive if there are delays because the game is harder to develop for one system or if a game came out for another system and it did so well that they decided to make more money by releasing it for another console.

I also think it is bad business by Capcom. I'm buying RE5 for the ps3, regardless of when it comes out, b/c I'm used to playing all of my RE games for Playstation and I'm used to the PS controller for RE (with the minor gamecube stint where i didn't like the controls as much). I'm sure there are a lot of multi-console gamers just like me who would wait to buy the game on ps3 regardless of when it comes out on 360. You said it yourself they are in the business of making money and they have customers which arent MS or Sony, those are only clients and or partners. Microsoft knows that if this game is anything like RE4. The game will sell consoles. You can't tell me that the PS3 owners will become so disenchanted with Capcom that they won't purchase RE5. That is BS. If Microsoft does get timed exclusivity, they will do one of three buy a MS console <which I bought a PS3 for MGS4>, wait for the ps3, or not purchase at all.

Capcom is noting screwing the customers if they do this. You are still getting the game but you are waiting. Funny how now PS3 owners are getting Bioshock yet no-one is biyatching about the timed exclusivity.

MS and Xbox came out of NOWHERE in 2001. A lot of that fan-base obviously came from SEGA SATURN, N64, PS1 and new gamers.

Resident Evil did come out on the PS1 and was a great game.

Ive always been a huge capcom fan since snes. I now have a 360 only for this gen, and re5 is one my most anticipated games. I was also confused at the lack of capcom games on ps2. so many were on DC and gamecube. If RE seels great on the gamecube/wii then it will probaly do great on the 360. Id be surprised if this were true, but capcom have had some pretty good success with Dead rising, lost planet, and DMC4 on 360 so I doubt their worried about the sales.

I for one grew up on sony consoles and even I own a 360 so I can well understand what you are saying. I usually base my posts on personal experience and it's people I know that followed Resi through out the series all own PS3's now. Most of them arent hardcore gamers though and will only pick up the more known titles like GTA, MGS, RE and so on. We all know there are thousands of gamers like that out there. Microsoft wants games *only* for their consumers, so in Microsoft's mind, Sony consumers can go f*ck themselves. Instead of creating new IP and recruiting developers for new studios, the best Microsoft can do, or wants to do, is buy timed exclusivity or buy big studios. That is sad =(

Oh well, if it is timed exclusive on 360, I can only assume they will focus more on the 360 version first and then the PS3 version will get extra content just like Lost Planet, Bioshock and potentially Mass Effect and Dead Rising. The only way I could not hate capcom for timed exclusivity is if they indeed add extra content, after all there will likely be space on the disc to add it.

Hey, at least Resident Evil 5 games have always been linear, so it wouldn't matter if the game is huge, since they could make it fit on plenty of DVDs. Unless Capcom feels like revolutionizing the series again by making it an open world, but I doubt it, considering it would be an unnecessary investment since RE5's success will be built upon RE4's, especially since Capcom loves to milk everything. I'm guessing Capcom will do the open world, but for RE6 or 7, where Xbox 720 will finally be able to play an open world with no constraints.

Don't believe me? Do some research. Tomb Raider II is a good place to start and trust me, it had a lot more to do with money than technical difficulties with the Saturn. It was announced way before 360 came out, you could have bought a PS3 by then. Not only that, but VF4 and VF4 evolution were also exclusives to PS2. Kinda stupid to assume it wouldn't be exclusive way before VF5 even came out to PS3.

And what you're saying about Sony and Sega, that is not true. Sega screwed themselves by releasing Sega CD, 32X and Saturn succesively, which is why people stopped caring about them. That is why developers shied away from it, not because Sony did anything. Final Fantasy makers wanted to add heavy CGI which was impossible on N64. Sony also didn't "buy" exclusivity, they simply reached agreements where Sony would release them from paying royalties; it is much different from paying 50 million dollars for exclusive content, and 10s of millions of dollars for timed exclusives.

The whole buying exclusives directly with tons of cash practice was started by Microsoft with Ninja Gaiden 1 for the original Xbox, since the fanbase wanted it to be on Gamecube first, and PS2 second. There was no reason for Tecmo to release it on the Xbox even if Microsoft decided to do the same as Sony, so Microsoft had to pay a higher price than Sony used to pay in the Saturn era. Sega was going bankrupt which is why they couldn't even afford to release 3rd parties from royalty contracts, while Sony has another agenda.

The exclusives Microsoft is paying to Square are paying off for FFXIII, indirectly, just like when Sony adviced Rockstar to take the 50 million in order to make a better GTAIV, despite the fact that Rockstar approached them for yet another exclusive. Wrong on all accounts Isaac. I was at E3 the year it happened. The year developers were dropping games that were already in development on the Saturn, for the PS1. Everyone that had Saturn games in the works put them on the backburner for the PS1 versions. Money was involved.

Also, VF has seen the likes of Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2 and now PS3/360. I had a 360 but not a PS3. Of course I would be pissed it was exclusive. Thank god it came out for 360 after all and was much better. I have both systems now so it's a non-issue.

What if the 360 version is coming along and could release by Christmas? I have both systems, so getting it before the end of the year on either one would be awesome. I bought a gamecube just for RE4. Sony pays for exclusives, Nintendo pays for exclusives, why hate Microsoft for doing it? At least Playstation will still be getting the game. Metal Gear Solid 2 was on the Xbox, it was an awful and poor attempt at a poor. The graphics were not improved upon, there was framerate problems which basically makes the game unplayable.

Capcom has always supported the percieved leader of the generation more than the others(not just talking about consoles sold but overall industry support and revenue earning ability that will in the end produce a winner in the race). lol

Its no doubt the PS3 will hani-capp the game anyways its better devs make the best product they can on one platform then go back and try to match its brethern to the original.

When PS3 games do match the 360 versions its because the devs upgrade the engine due to more time. Remember that that's just your opinion. I have to agree with Predator that Fable 2, Infinite Undiscovery, Banjo 3, Gears of War 2, Halo Wars, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Alan Wake, Left 4 Dead, Too Human, etc are probably going to be some of the best games out there.

I'll admit, it's my opinion that Xbox 360 has a much better lineup simply because I love action/shooters more and the occasional RPG. But if you're into playing the never-ending Final Fantasy's (I personally think they're milking that series) and MGS4, then by all means go for it.

I just think Microsoft is playing the game smart. Everyone hates them 'cause they're powerful, but so is Sony. Sony's just not taking the initiative here. Hopefully that will pick up.

There are a few things that you guys need to understand. This deal benefits Microsoft and only Microsoft. It doesn't benefit 360 owners (aside from fanboys who like this type of thing to gloat about). It doesn't release the game any faster on the 360; all it does is keep PS3 owners from getting the game at the same time. However, PS3 owners need to keep in mind that what MS is doing is not dirty business, but just business. They are doing what is best for their company, and their shareholders, and you cannot condemn for it. Who you can, and should condemn if this deal does turn out to be true, is Capcom who would have turned their back on the PS3 install base. Agreeing to said deal means that Capcom does not give a rats ass about the PS3 owners who bought DMC4 and made it a success (which would make me think twice about purchasing a PS3 Capcom product).

Timed exclusivity of RE5 would be brilliant move from Capcom as it was from 2K with Bioshock. Developing AAA title for PS3 and XBox360 is really expensive and it's very likely that development of PS3 version is dragging badly behind compared to development of XO version (nothing new in that). So what to do?

1. You could hire more people to PS3 development, but it would explode your total and monthly costs of development and risks would get very high for company (if sales of RE5 would flop, then that would take Capcom very close bankruptcy).

2. You could also delay release of both versions of game and transfer people from XO development to PS3 development, but that would also effect to total cost of game and risks would again get higher. Also it's possible that your delayed release would happen same time as GT5/FF-series/Halo/etc. release, which would be murderous for RE5 sales.

3. You could delay only PS3 version release same way as Atari did with latest Alone In The Dark game, but if game flops with XBox 360, that would totally kill sales of PS3 version. And even game would succeed, it won't be selling as good in PS3, as it would, if both version would come at same time. Which isn’t good especially because PS3 version did cost more to develop?

4. Or you can go to Microsoft office and say: "guys we have you a deal of the lifetime. You pay us 30 million big ones and we give you one year timed exclusivity to RE5. RE5 is big in Japan as well in Europe and your sales sux in both of those territories."

With 30 million $ Capcom can lower they development costs as well risks and same time they will get more time for development of PS3 version.

Unfortunately for PS3 owners now comes new player to field. GREED! Capcom knows that PS3 version will not sell as well as XO version because of timed exclusivity. They could continue as planned and get out good PS3 version of RE5, but because development of that version did cost much more than XBox360 version and it won't even sell as well as XO version that would be total waste of money and skills. Or they can hold RE5 PS3 version development and put those guys to work with XO version or new projects. Capcom will develop first XO version of RE5 ready and then they will do with small team 2: nd class translation of the game to PS3 (Lost Planet all over again). Even PS3 version doesn't sell very well, it will be profitable, because it didn't cost very much to develop.

Resident Evil will have it's hardcore's and will have it's new fans. You didn't read my post well than enough. I did say that if PS3 version will be delayed 6+ months compared to XO versiopn, then that will effect to sales. You can check any NOT simultaneous game releases sell figures on PS3 and XO (COD4 versions were released same time for both platforms and MGS4 is only for PS3. Orange box is one good example about risks of delayed release).

I'm quite sure that effect will happen also other way round with UT3 release. XO version will not sell as much it would sell if all versions of UT3 would be released at same time.
