MGS4 only 33GB? MGO allows 1 character free...more for a fee?

On the eve of its worldwide launch, found on NeoGAF forums, there is evidence (photos) of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots taking up a total capacity of 33.2GB despite being widely rumored as the first game to fill up a 50GB dual-layered Blu-ray Disc.

Also found is the Metal Gear Online sign-up screen where the player is informed that they are allowed to create one (1) MGO character for free, while more can be purchased later.

Hit the jump.

NegativeCreepWA5791d ago (Edited 5791d ago )

I hope this isn't real.

Edit: I could care less if the game is 33 or 50 gigs. It'll be great no matter how much space it uses. And a lot of that space is used for multiple languages. I'm talking about paying for extra characters.

sonarus5791d ago

Please...this is such bullcrap. Where is the 33GB proof? Only proof for new character...oh i see

fishd5791d ago

there should be some hidden file or something.if you select all of the files in ffXII disk they are just 5.4 MEGABYTE!!!

sonarus5791d ago

Maybe, maybe not. All i know is devs had to cut stuff to fit that game on 50GB. Kojima came on record and said 50GB is not enough. Kojima is not the kind of dev who tells lies to hype his game up. I call bull in all shapes and sizes.

NO_PUDding5791d ago

This is almost as much of a *gasp* moment as:

"They all died 100 years ago"

znu5791d ago (Edited 5791d ago )

it can be easily faked(the size one)

all you have to do is rename an image, and name some random files 33 gb in size to that of a ps3 format game

it's very simple really

he could be showing us random crap there, just renaming everything, cause there is no proof that it IS mgs4

Edit
Also the font used in free character thing looks weird, for the "Register", the g and the i are squished together(for the second image), i think it's photoshopped

it also says "Register free character for this..."

it should say "register A free character for this..."

i don't think they wouldn't make grammer mistakes in MGO, especially since its Kojima

ravenguard885791d ago

that the game wouldn't take 50gb... That has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not it's a good game regardless.

Danny Dan5791d ago

EVEN.. IF it was real... 33 GBs is still a lot of space... A LOT.

I LOVE my xbox5791d ago

All I know is that I have found heaven on 1 blu ray disk.

Milky5791d ago

I always knew that you have to pay for characters.

Britjadg5791d ago

even @ 33 gigs thats 4 dual layer DVD disks for a release on 360.

i dont think this is true though, i reckon thes p'shopped.

Tomdc5791d ago (Edited 5791d ago )

The paying for extra character thing I heard about yesterday on the uk ps forums, a lot of people were annoyed! I mean its not really fair...

They give us free online play, but then in households where you have more than one online player, you have to pay for it!

Edit: By the way anyone saying the pic is a fake is wrong, they are making you pay!

B-Rein5791d ago

you are totally correct, when you right click it on my computers and go to properties it says 3.76 gb but when you go in the disc and select all files then right clik and go properties it says 5.42 gb, hahhaha so metal gear solid has some files that are not counted in the disc, Who ever has a blu-ray drive on their pc try this out with MGS 4!!!!!

Jack Meahoffer5791d ago (Edited 5791d ago )

If you took out the audio for EVERY language on earth then it would be a lot smaller than 50GB everyone knew this... The game will still be the best MGS game ever and the hardcore fans will love it no matter the amount of space it takes up. Why you people care enough to argue about it is beyond me.

The real story here is PAYING for additonal characters. If that is true its a pretty major issue. It proves the old saying... "Pay me now or pay me later".

I love the fact the I don't have to pay for PSN but it annoys me when multiplayer doesn't work for a couple weeks after game launch (COD4, V6V2, TF2 and GTAIV) and now they're going to charge people for another character? Seriously how much server storage is needed for an F'ing character file? Kinda makes a $1 a week for XBL not look that bad. If true this will be a huge crack in the "PSN is free" argument. Can't wait to see hardcore Sony fans defend this.

My nephews will need like 4 characters to properly enjoy MGSO. If this is true its really going to hurt the long term success of the game.

mbmonk5791d ago

@Jack

"Kinda makes a $1 a week for XBL not look that bad. If true this will be a huge crack in the "PSN is free" argument. Can't wait to see hardcore Sony fans defend this."

How is this a huge crack in the PSN is free argument? Konami is the one charging for characters not Sony.

Konami could have allowed 1 character per PSN account, but they chose not to do that. They decided to allow one account per PS3 machine. So to me it looks like this is Konami more so than Sony.

I also love how you try to dismiss anyone questioning your logic by labeling them fanboys. Honestly, that is an intellectually lazy stance to take.

I would like to point out that the people who have to pay are only the people who want more than one character, and yes I agree it's greedy. But we are talking about a subset of all the people who play MGS4 online. With XBL 100% of people who play online have to pay. My ASSumption is about 10% of people who play online will pay up for an extra account.

XBL is good. I am not saying it's not worth the cash. But I don't see how charging probably 5% of the total number of people who buy the game a fee (do we know the price even?) puts a crack in the 'free psn' argument.

Care to elaborate on your point?

Jack Meahoffer5791d ago (Edited 5791d ago )

You're correct everyone has to pay on XBL and this MGSO thing won't effect EVERYONE. But you seriously think only 10% of people will want more than one character? come on... Thats a huge understatement. First you say its 10% then its 5%. come on...

Yes this is a Konami doing this but how does that make it any better? Gamers still have to pay the toll what does it matter whos charging? Thats silly. Sony built the infastruture which requires third parties to host thier own servers thereby allowing them to charge. If this is successful for Konami you don't think others will follow suit?

Theres not much to elaborate on. If this is true then this is a piece of PSN thats not free anymore. Although small its still NOT FREE. This is the biggest release on PS3 by far. To say its only one game isn't really realistic when you consider how big this game is.

It seems that you care more about protecting Sony than debating this change in policy. I personally could care less about a faceless corporation. I'm in this for games. Like I said my nephews will be impacted by this because they have 4 different people playing and they all will want their own character. Why don't you elaborate on your point more because it sounds to me your whole argument is "It doesn't matter because its not Sony doing it".

Also I never said the word fanboy. You did. I said hardcore Sony fans. And they will defend this. It wouldn't matter what Konami or Sony did they would defend it no matter what just like you are.

Its not about a gotcha game for me here. This is a huge departure from the past and to gloss over it like you are saying its not a big deal is like sticking your head in the sand. Like I said if this works out many more games will begin charging because these are businesses out to make money.

I mentioned the $1 a week XBL fee because to me its peanuts. Sony fans hold that $1 a week over everyones head but paying for character slots is fine? Why is that? I'd rather not pay anything but I'll gladdy pay the peanuts to play games online without waiting a week for a patch or get nickel and dimed for F'ing character slots. Its one thing to pay for DLC its another thing to pay to "host" a tiny character save file.

At the end of the day I have both a PS3 and a 360 and if I need another character slot I'll pay but I still think it goes directly against the "PSN is free" feature of the PS3. This isn't additonal content its a fee to "host" a file thats a big difference.

mbmonk5791d ago (Edited 5791d ago )

@Jack

"But you seriously think only 10% of people will want more than one character? come on... Thats a huge understatement. First you say its 10% then its 5%. come on..."

I said only 10% of people online WILL pay more. I said nothing about how many WANT extra slots.

I mentioned 5% in terms of all the people WHO BUY THE GAME will pay. I made a subtle change to the equation, and I didn't explain it, so I understand why you missed the difference.

My rough math was 50% will play online and %10 of those will pay for slots. That equals 5% of ALL PEOPLE will pay. I hope that clears it up.

"Yes this is a Konami doing this but how does that make it any better? Gamers still have to pay the toll what does it matter whos charging? Thats silly."

But it does matter when you try to lay the blame at someone's feet. It's like convicting someone for a crime that they didn't commit. I get your larger point. But your saying Sony's PSN isn't free because Konami is charging. Why are you trying to take Sony to task for what Konami is doing? I understand the infastructure argument. But honestly I think it's a cop out by Konami. EA and every other game uses the PSN accounts just fine AND FREE. What is Konami doing that is so different than COD4 or any EA game? Nothing. I think Konami should be getting your anger not Sony. But hey I agree. I don't want to pay for extra character slot. I am with you.

"If this is successful for Konami you don't think others will follow suit?" - Like XBOX Live charges for online play? Is Konami just following suit?

"If this is true then this is a piece of PSN thats not free anymore. Although small its still NOT FREE. " - I get that. I think it's crap too in all honesty. But it's crap on Konami's part.

"It seems that you care more about protecting Sony than debating this change in policy." - But has there been a change in policy from Sony's standpoint? MMO's are going to require a fee to play. Sony has always said that. But again it's not Sony charging. All Sony said is that it's an open platform. Has any Sony first party game charging for online play?

"It doesn't matter because its not Sony doing it" - My whole point is it's Konami not Sony. So direct your anger in that direction. Again, I am with you I think it's bullshit.

"Also I never said the word fanboy. You did. I said hardcore Sony fans." Explain the subtle difference between "Sony hardcore fan" and fanboy. But maybe I unfairly rephrased your sentence.

"Sony did they would defend it no matter what just like you are." - Ding! Ding! Ding! There it is. He laid the ground work and here is the payoff. Don't question your logic or points, because if you do your must be a 'hardcore sony fan'. Couldn't resist could you?

"I mentioned the $1 a week XBL fee because to me its peanuts. Sony fans hold that $1 a week over everyones head but paying for character slots is fine? Why is that? I'd rather not pay anything but I'll gladdy pay the peanuts to play games online without waiting a week for a patch or get nickel and dimed for F'ing character slots. Its one thing to pay for DLC its another thing to pay to "host" a tiny character save file." - Are you arguing me or Sony fans? I think I mentioned "XBL is good. I am not saying it's not worth the cash.". So it's seems like your intermixing who your response is targeted at.

9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 36 which means, 4 xbox 360 disc which means keep dreaming on with that dream.

As for pay for a fee for other characters, oh well. Get use to it. XBL and PC are and have been supporting this notion for many years. Content is content sometimes it's free, sometimes it's for a fee. You want what you want until you realise you have to let go of something.

Cry and cry again.

There is just 7GB space on X360 disk due to some security stuff

ruibing5791d ago

Is there a missing link? I don't see anything referring to the 33GB, just the single character creation screen.

jethro_jones5791d ago

What is so good about this game? The story? Gameplay videos online look crappy and awkward. And some aspects of the game look silly, like the little robot that goes around zapping people, and the way Snake runs. I don't get why everyone is always loving on this game, even before it came out.

I predict people will spend a few days playing it and then get back to the good games like COD4 and GT5. I'm more excited for KZ2, COD5, and GeOW2 than I am for this game.

lonestarmt5791d ago

seriously. Be prepared guys. Certain fanboys are going to go full force the next few days as much as possible to pull the steam out of this fantastic game. Don't let them, its all BS and enjoy the ending to one of the greatest gaming series(or at least solid snake) of all time. Just blow crap like this off. Even if it is 33g who gives a crap doesn't mean the game is a masterpiece.

In the beta too change your character you had to play for 50 hours and if you did change your stats were wiped.

donator5791d ago

On the bright side, having to pay for more characters will limit the amount of veterans making new accounts just to mess with noobies. Plus, if you wanted different skills, all you had to do was use them... I don't see why you have to create a new character to get new skills.

Says you5791d ago

He needed more room cause he was complaining about the space of Blu Ray so how can this only be 33GB?? seriously this shouldn't have been approved anyway considering I did everybody here a favor and debunked it

since Kojima wanted more space for his game!.

MGS4 IS A FAILURE THE OTHER mgs games have been a joke of late tbh mgs1 is the best mgs game ever made and beats mgs4 .also you will notice they tried to copy the original splinter cell game on the pc like chaos theory but failed , they could not program the game to have both stealth and depth of gameplay that stealth games like splinter cell on the pc had no chance this is an all out shoot em up with retarded A.I and a baffling story that actually makes no sense at times the gameplay in this game is like a train it just flys by with cgi thrown into the mix at every corner. I m not surprised that this game is not getting what most game of this production lvl (4yrs ) and hype it should have got the scores that gears of war 1 got ,halo 3,cod4,gta 4, and other aaa tiles have received its not the second coming and wont get goty that for sure not with 92% on gameranking and meta

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro42d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7242d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2342d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Hideo Kojima laments that Metal Gear Solid 4's digital battlefield 'is no longer science fiction'

Game creator Hideo Kojima is and probably will always be best-known for his creation and stewardship of the Metal Gear series at Konami, which since his departure has been more-or-less on permanent hiatus (don't mention Survive). In his almost three decades these games evolved to the point where they predicted certain problems of the information age (MGS 2), took aim at contemporary topics like Guantanamo Bay (MGS: Ground Zeroes), and ended on a profound sense of sadness about our species' inability to break the cycles of global conflict (MGS V).

It's not clear what sparked this reflection, but Kojima's been thinking about Metal Gear Solid 4, an entry that was (and unfortunately still remains) a PlayStation 3 exclusive. In that entry the player controls an aged Solid Snake in the year 2014, caught up in a civil war being fought between Private Military Companies (PMCs).

Dirty_Lemons353d ago

That was a great fucking game/ movie.

DarXyde353d ago

To this day, it's one of those games where I refuse to skip the cutscenes, no matter how many playthroughs I've done.

But if you ask me...MGS2 was bloody prophetic and has aged like fine wine. That game was blasted as the weakest entry, and yet it's so enduring. I replayed it some time last year and it was remarkable.

sadraiden353d ago

Heed not the lamentations of people that say that MGS2 is bad because of the Snake/Raiden bait and switch. Every MGS game has its own merits, and while most people consider 3 to be the best, they all shine equally in my opinion.

porkChop353d ago

@sad

I would generally agree but with the exception of MGSV. It had truly excellent gameplay/combat, but dull and largely empty open world(s), and a narrative that is literally only half finished.

I really wish Kojima hadn't tried to go open world with MGS. It just wasn't right for the series. But I get it. He didn't want to make MG anymore but he wasn't allowed to make anything else. So he had to experiment within that franchise. Still, it was the wrong direction.

Santouryuu352d ago

I have been thinking about this a lot, MGS2 being the weakest and getting blasted.
My conclusion, for some years now, it's my favorite game of the series.
Going from MGS1 to MGS2 was such a big leap, in graphics, mechanics, etc.
And now it's even more relevant for being 'bloody prophetic' as you stated.

Maybe dust of my vita and play it again...

porkChop353d ago

It's a shame we never got a remaster of MGS4. The original game only rendered at 1024x768, and it ran anywhere from like 20fps to 60fps depending on the area. A remaster could have very easily cleaned up the visuals and performance. It's such a great game. I just want to play it again but in its best possible state.

MIDGETonSTILTS17353d ago

I agree, but they did all sorts of tricks to make use of the ps3’s cell processor….they’d probably have to rebuild the game in order to make it run on another machine. And, if that involves remaking those cutscenes somehow, then itll never happen, unfortunately.

porkChop352d ago

Nah. There have been plenty of remasters of PS3 games and they've turned out fine. It can be done.

Ah a man of culture. Duty calls

cell989353d ago

He was always ahead with this series. MSG1 taught me about the importance of passing on our genes into future generations but in a responsible way, for they are bound to what we experienced in our lifetime. Sons of liberty taught me about global control and simulation runs to test society in a grand scale, the importance and dangers of control of information. MGS3 taught me about patriotism and how that can blind you into doing things you never would have otherwise, all for the sake of politicians who only see you as another pawn in their grand scheme of things. MSG4 taught me war is inevitable and always orchestrated because it's great for the economy. Soon simulation systems will start dictating who goes to war and why, all run through proxies. Privatization of military company are already here. We already started to see how a small group of elites dictates everything that happens. Nothing is done, nothing happens without strings being pulled.

Eidolon353d ago

You learned all this from MGS?

Tody_ZA353d ago

All that was literally the themes and core story of each game, so not surprising he learned that from MGS. Metal Gear Solid 2 in particular is so relevant today, it was more than a decade ahead of its time and a work of genius. Kojima saw what the digital future was going to become when it was in its infancy. Even MGS 5 despite being unfinished and less of a traditional Metal Gear Solid game with regards to story, had a fair bit to say about language and control over it that is relevant today.

It's a highly acclaimed series for a reason, and one of my favourite.

Eidolon353d ago

I've watched my brother play the MGS games, but I only beat MGS1 myself on the PSP in 2014, and MGSV in 2016. I took the themes and plots as lore, tbh.. trying to piece together the story of MGS rather than relating them to our current times.

Tody_ZA353d ago

It's definitely social commentary, Eidolon. You should read the "themes and analysis" section of the Wikipedia page for MGS2: Sons of Liberty for a start! Game was heavy on this.

Eidolon353d ago

I'll take a look, thanks. Actually might pick up MGS2 again (PS Vita), It's been years since I last played. Might start a new game tbh.

sadraiden353d ago

MGS2 literally predicted digital manipulation of information that we see today all the way back in 2001. MGS2 became Zucc's playbook.

Knushwood Butt352d ago

cell989352d ago

If it wasn't for the retconning of how FOXDIE works, including clunky scenes with Naomi and Liquid, MGS4 would be a perfect game. There are so many gameplay options. It felt like us PS3 owners got something truly unique and special.
