last week there was a thread from mvcuk saying that the 360 was selling more than the ps3 in the uk...then lo and behold, vgchartz estimates yesterday put the 360 in front in the uk. after putting it behind for ages.

then after the npd figures had microsoft infront by a thousand last month in NA, after vgchartz was predicting sony had sold 50K more, they now "estimate" that microsoft beat sony by just over 200....hmmm. times the amount that the 360 sold more by 4(approx weeks in month) then you have a thousand.

basically, vgchartz has no f^&*ing clue, and just grab some figures from anywhere....vgchartz should be banned until they are proven fact.

VGchartz aren't entirely accurate, and I woudl suspect both 360 and PS3 to be much higher (360 still in the lead easily) becuase I doubt the GTA4 slowdown has happened quite so fast. Even Wii has had a relatively quiet week.

I think that PS3 sales will be down before MGS4, for sure. And they will also be down before the new 80gb is released.

if blu-ray winning the format war did not kill the xbox 360 what make people think that 1 game... metal gear will... specially a non-mass market game and targeted to the hard core gamer... which regardless of the over 120,000,000 PS2 install base snake eater only sold 2-3 millions... trust me... I am a big fan of Metal Gear... but if blu-ray winning which gave the PS3 mass market and media exposure didn't kill the xbox 360... 1 game will not... specially metal gear...

Metal Gear will not move many consoles... hardcore games tend to not do that.. since hardcore gamers tend to buy the console early in console cycle...

If Metal Gear does not jump start the PS3 in america Sony may need to do something ... maybe a price drop? otherwise it may fall into the poor sells it had prior to the $100 price drop.

You cant say the game isn't good enough or will be disappointing. You couldn't possibly have been expecting more from it, either in graphic, story, gameplay, game length, or the sheer scale of the game. Theres almost nothing to fault here. So I guess, you will either be buying it and a PS3 real soon, or we can just assume you're all talk and hot air.

@Willio - the reason why they are making such predictions.. is because Gears 1 sold like 10 millions with an installbase base on the fact that gears sold like 3 million is 4 weeks... but snake eater didn't during since it's realease and Gears 2 will enjoy 2 times or more the xbox 360 installbase it's predecessor did. They are basing the number of copies they are going to sells on how well how well the 1st gears did... which is logical.

@Real gamer 4 life - I honestly don't think Gears 2 will move that many consoles.. nor Fable... since they are targetted to the hardcore gamer... probably Viva Pinata and other rare games would... but I don't agree that Gears is not mass market... FPS tend to be mass market... and the fact that Gears was game of the year and is one of the most successful titles in terms of sells... I think it can be considered mass market..

That makes sense but if MGS really does get Game of the Year, wouldnt that help sales as well? Gears of War benefitted it. Not saying your logic is flawed, infact i agree with it but there is different factors this time around. The fact this game is selling during summer makes it unique as well because no one really usually buys game this time of the year. Instead of only focusing on xmas season, i think Sony is trying to break the trend with the economy declining in comparison to Europe.

Basing previous sales record is actually illogical as well. MGS2 sold 5.5 million, so predictions should expect MGS3 with 20million or whatever because of the ps2 installbase at its time?

Don't forget that MGS2 sold at least twice as more than MGS3, and I'm talking about the PS2 version only. MGS2 came out when the PS2 had at least a 10 million installed base. I could definitely see MGS4 outselling MGS3 maybe a million or so. MGS4 will give a boost, but there are also other proven IPs people are waiting for such as Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo. The PS3 already is gaining the advantage in Europe and Japan by default. Microsoft already threw it's biggest hitter (Halo 3), and it wasn't enough to totally destroy the PS3.

MGS4 will no more push PS3 sales than Gears 2 will push 360 sales. The majority of people that are really into gaming and are "hardcore" gamers already have their consoles. Inorder to really push sales now there either has to be a price drop (making the hardware more readily accessible to people with less money to spend on luxuries) or a game that appeals to the masses has to be released inorder to entise the masses to purchase the hardware. Just look at the Wii, the majority of the games appeal to the masses and the price is low. My girl friend wouldn't pickup a 360 or PS3 controller and play MGS4 or Gears 2 but she would pickup a Wii remote and have a go on Wii sports. The Wii appeals to the masses and this is refleced in sales numbers. Just because you are going to buy a game and think it is the best thing since sliced bread, be it MGS4 or Gears 2, doesn't mean that everyone is going to rush out and buy it or buy the console to play it on.

Wow, even with Bluray winning the format war, with MGS 4 about to be released, and other hardhitting titles like Lair and Haze ... uummm!!!. Let me leave that last part out, but the PS3 sales are tanking in North America.

Yep, PS3 sales are doing modestly better in Europe over the 360, and doing way better in Japan than the 360, but still Japan is not purchasing the PS3 in huge numbers. Overall, the Playstation name that dominated the last 2 generations, with over 100 million PS2 owners in the world, and the PS3 has sold so little.

What happened to the Playstation name? With Microsoft gaining market share the generation, and the Playstation losing huge amounts of market share this gen, will there be a PS4?

When the PS3 was supposed to deliver 4d graphics, and it continually has a hard time running 360 ports with worse graphics and poor framerates. With an inferior online service and Bluray tanking with consumers, the PS3 has lots to deliver before the mainstream start taking note.

Meanwhile, the 360 continually eats at Sony's marketshare, and that has to bite Sony HARD!!!.

VG chartz is just one big guess-timate,(wait for NPD) so who really knows what the real numbers are, sometimes their close sometimes their waaaay off, in this case *IF their numbers are close it does make you wonder why ps3 sales aren't higher with bluray winning the format war and their biggest exclusive due out in less than 2 weeks. It will be interesting to see sales after MGS4 release....but really if you actually analyze the data not many games even highly anticipated AAA exclusives have really had a dramatic effect on console sales, Halo3 did boost some big 360 hardware sales numbers but partly because sales always pick up in the fall/holiday season....ps3 exclusives have particularly had less effect on ps3 hardware sales than what was previously expected....I think MGS4 will definitely change that, I'm sure ps3 will get a much needed boost but I just don't think it will be that BIG impact on sales that some expect, the good news is it should sell a huge amount of software though.

1.You see, the only reason the xbox1 was discontinued was because it had high manufacturing costs and hence made a loss on each unit sold.

Well said! The Wii has successfully targeted the general masses and has been very successful because of it. The price is right and the games are right. The 360 or PS3 will never have success like that because their price point is higher and the games produced are aimed at a narrow audience. I don't like the term "hardcore" gamer but for lack of a better word right now i will use that. The "hardcore" gamer is the target for the majority of 360 and PS3 games. If either the 360 or PS3 want success like the Wii then they have to lower their prices and produce a wide variety of games aimed at the general masses along with games aimed at "hardcore" gamers inorder to satisfy their existing install base. Just because the Wii is the number one seller, there is no need to be bitter. I honestly don't understand why so many people get their panties in a twist over hardware sales and which console is selling the most.
