Official US Xbox Magazine gives GTA IV 9.5/10

Gtagaming.com reports: "Another review has just made itself known to my email inbox. Jack Rosberg sent along some (very small) images of a new review of GTA IV from the USA's Official Xbox Magazine.

They awarded the game 9.5 out of 10 for its "wonderful environment", "deep multiplayer" and for offering over 90 missions in single player. They say that multiplayer includes a 'Party Mode' where you're free to switch among gametypes with friends without having the game disconnect or split players up.

They say that you'll also be able to progress through eleven different ranks online and that it's possible to call the other team using the game cell phone during multiplayer. The only problem which the magazine feels the game has is that it has too many "filler missions" which don't develop the story at all."

NO they aren't. You can't go off tossing 10's anyhow it reduces the value of most games. Its getting to the point that only AAA titles get 10's its fvkin bullshit. Kudos on Xbox mag for having the ballz to point out a flaw and doc the review accordingly.

In my eyes Halo 3 didn't deserve most of its ratings. I have played the game and i really cannot see how that game can get a 10. However its the Xbox Magazine and they were simply supporting their big game. I can see how Halo 3 could get a 9 or i can sort of look past a 9.5 but way too many undeserved 10's for halo 3. But that really is the problem with tossing 10's around. By giving halo 3 a 10 and not GTA4, they are insinuating that halo 3 is better than GTA4.

Well being that gta iv isn't out yet whose to say it is better than halo3. I mean, they have obviously played the game. Unlike anyone else on this site at the current time. Perhaps these comments should be reserved at least until you have actualy played the game.

I'm astounded at the number of people saying xbox mag has no credibility because they game GTA IV a 9.5 and Halo 3 a 10. Especially when some of these people have never played either game.

I don't understand, maybe they only give 10's for first party titles, but Halo 3 definitely had its own fair share of flaws, but somehow it still received a 10. I don't even think you can rate GTAIV on the same scale as other games, even with a few bugs and a few subpar filler missions this game is still looking to be the best that has been released thus far this generation. You could as far as to say that next gen, will become this gen when GTAIV releases. The same way GTAIII ushered in a new generation.

WHat do you man Perfect 10s where too much when plenty of flawed games had received 10's before it. A pefect 10 doesn't mean that a game is flawless, it just means that it is the best of its genre and one of the best offered on a platform in general, and I think GTAIV will live up to both of those things.

herbert, thats most likely 90 main story missions, not side missions. and remember, the story branches, so u may get more or less missions depending on choices.
i cant wait for this game. i dont get why people get so angry when this game gets a perfect score. it may not be perfection, but hell, will ANYTHING be perfection? no, there are a million things that could make the best games even better. would i rate SotC 10/10? yes i would. it was too short. so what? there was no side quests. so what? there was no multiplayer. so what? if the experience is magnificent, then by all means give it a perfect score. and hope that other games strive to create something as good.

Well when I saw the 9.5 my immediate reaction was "people are going to be btching about this". Then I though "maybe I am just getting jaded coming in here and maybe people are better then to complain about this". Then I open the thread and know why I had my initial reaction.

What is awesome is how people who haven't even played it yet are saying it should be a 10. What if you play it and dont like it as much as San Andreas or Vice City? Should it still be a 10? 9.5 is a awesome score, and its getting 10s in other places, looks like its going to be the AAA everyone was hoping for, it just wont be that mythological perfect game for every person.

Having "filler missions" sounds great to me. Not that I'm going to enjoy every one of them, but if your going to have to settle with problems in a game, filler missions will be the least of my worries.

As long as the core gameplay works, the GTA environment is still intact, I will be happy as hell. In fact, I consider the online icing on the cake. I was wanting this game long before I even heard it was going to have multiplayer.

This, I feel, is the biggest problem with all the GTA games. I've never finished one because, I feel like the storyline drags and the missions become rather repetitious. The sandbox style, get 5 stars, see how many people you can kill only goes so far with me as well. The one reason I'm considering this version is because of the online play.

Still it's yet another very solid score for what looks like a very solid game. I'm waiting on other reviews. I'm curious to see how IGN, 1up, Edge and others rate the game.

It's got to be pretty hard to even try and tie in 90 missions into the actual storyline. You'd need some writers from Squaresoft to assist with that.

I don't think it will matter to the bulk of players. Besides, I have never played a GTA game straight through. If you get tired of missions you can always just do other stuff. You know, all that stuff GTA is famous for like starting a lemonade stand, driving bike messenger missions, donating to the church, and committing good deeds throughout the city.

9.5 is way, way above what most games get.

people have different views on what makes a great game so by default people will score it differently, but the fact that this has consistently got scores between 9 and 10 shows this is an outstanding game.

the final test will come when i have the game in my own hands and can give it my own score, like wise we will all be giving it our own scores and truth be told some people will not like it as much as others.

I get the sense that by filler, if they mean optional then that is great, those so called filler missions only add to the amount of in game freedom the player is given.
