Games Aktuell GTA4 Review: 'We can't score it 11/10.'

German magazine Games Aktuell is the latest magazine to review Grand Theft Auto IV. Here is their verdict:

* Graphics: 9/10
The gigantic size of the city makes you forget the few graphical imperfections of the game.

* Sound: 10/10
Best GTA soundtrack ever, and probably the most compelling feature in the game.

* Controls: 8/10
Far from perfect but a big step from the previous GTA games.

* Multiplayer: 9/10
Great concept and innovative integration with the single-player mode.

* Gameplay: 10/10
We can't score it 11/10...

* Conclusion:
GTA4 is by far the best action game ever created.

It seems as though this game is gonna kick some arse.
Although I've seen some games this gen get higher than they deserve because of hype and anticipation, let's hope that's not the case.

I've got 3/4 of a game to beat before I grab this so I should be getting it quite soon.

Also, looking at the review I tally a 9.2 out of 10 if were going by the average of all those scores.

Awkwardly enough, no gaming review site ever goes by averaging. For example IGN has some part at the end which says that they don't total the score.

gta i a great game, no doubt but how did the controls get a 8 and the 10 and other things didnt get 10's but overall the game got a 10. that makes no sense.

EDIT: @STO. dont get me wrong, i really dont care that it got a 9/10 in graphics(i play gta for gameplay) but i care because it just shows where reviewers heads are at now. thier are so many great games that came and come out that reviewers look down upon just because it didnt have the ad/hype backing that some other games have. think about how great these games were and how many people dont/didnt play them because they read thier "favorite reviewers review" there are sequels in games that i would love to see but because nobody really brought them, its not happening. i think there needs to be a change in the way reviewers review games. there should be no numbers at the end of the score, rather just words.

You can't say people are buying into the hype when scoring a game when YOU haven't even played it yet. You have no idea how good it is.

Also, you have to remember that not all reviewers use the scores as an average. Not even IGN averages it's final scores.

Reviewers usually score games a 10 when they are that fun to play. No matter what else is wrong with a game, if you REALLY enjoy playing it, you'll want to give it a 10. A lot of the time, the other scores don't matter in comparison to the "fun factor."

Graphics can mean many things in this review.
It could be good looking highres textures.
Level of detail (trash on the streets, dust, clothing reacting to wind etc.)
The atmosphere in the game during the different time of the day.

As for audio, what do you know about MGS4 audio mechanics? Have you read the GTA4 audio Q&A? If you ask me, that's a whole lot of advanced audio details for a game.

Now, I'm not here to defend GTA or anything, but you can't really judge the reviewers for their opinions... they simply tell you how THEY feel about the game and its details. You can either agree or disagree with them, just like my post here will be bashed or loved.

If you judge games by reviews, then reading only one review won't do you any good. Go to gamerankings.com and see the average score for each game from all the reviews it got.

And as far as I know, there's only 1 prequel to Bioshock, which doesn't make it "BIG".
If you disagree with a review then write your own when the game comes out and see what people have to say about it.

Exactly. Theres just so much replay value and Rockstar never fails to pack GTA with easter eggs, hidden packages, and secret missions on parked vehicles. GTAIV will have even more easter eggs and a different variety of games to play like drunk driving.

See GTA to me is more about the free roaming than the story, I just love finding jumps, smashing grannies, getting the cop chase's going, stuff like that, and now I can do that with my friends? It's gonna take me sometime to get bored of that.
Reviews are just one guys opinion, we know that. But it helps you judge what the game offers.

ok about sound, you got me there. but as far as graphics, im sure the cutscenes that we've seen are in gameplay graphics since gta always uses its ingame engine for the graphics.

Because I haven't played any more than 10 minutes of it. But what I have heard from level-headed friends is that it's not perfect but it deserves a 10 overall just because the online is so much fun to play.

That's what everyone will in the end remember about the games they play. How fun it was. Right now you can probably think back to a couple of games you played when you were younger, and if you were to give them a review, you would give a 10/10. Probably not because everything about it was perfect, but because it was that fun to play. That's why you remember those games right? I know that's why I do.

My point is that all of the individual scores for each aspect of the game do not get averaged into the final score. Just because the audio and graphics have some issues it shouldn't take away from the final score. That final score is the real message the reviewer is trying to get across to people, and what this guy is saying is that it's one of the most fun games he has played.

One more thing to think about as far as the graphics judging goes. Who's to say that maybe he's judging graphics in ccomparison to other sandbox games? Would it really be fair to compare a FPS's graphics to a sandbox games graphics? I don't think so. The mechanics of both games are so different and have completely different effects going on onscreen at one time.

This game has always been really good regardless of the graphics. It's and awesome game. GTA is the game where you can do everything and not get in trouble for it. Hmmh.. Ask any serious professional videogame critic who has played GTAIV, and he/she will tell you that the graphics ARE really good for a sandbox game of this scale. Maybe not individual textures or character models, but more important things like a detailed environment, draw distance, animations (can't wait to see Euphoria in action!) etc. Or don't you think it's more impressive to view an entire city, miles in every direction, than to go through small corridors with 2-3 enemies in it..? (GeOW, Uncharted etc)

And I too believe this will be the best action game ever. Get ready for some perfect escapism, folks!

Any site knows giving it less than that will lead to a mass uprising of hate from gamers on the web. Unfortunately this game has been hyped to the point where everyone believes it's perfection. While I'd love that to be true, it will have it's quirks just like any other game.

Personally I've yet to be really excited about GTA IV after finding San Andreas to be a bit of a bore. Hopefully IV refreshes the series a bit and we get a great, timeless game.

I'm loving Halo 3 right now and I'm gonna love playing GTA IV because it looks like so much fun. Are the graphics that great, nah not really. However for the size of the city then hell yeh the graphics are bloody good.

Either rent or buy the game to see if its any good, you don't have to read the reviews to make up your own mind.

I, for one, am glad that GTA4 is on par to destroying Hideo Kojima's dream for the perfect game. GTA4 will not only outsell MGS4 but it will receive a higher critical review average and GTA4 will be so good it will banish the memory of MGS4 from most gamers
