Feature: PS3 vs Xbox 360: The release calendar showdown

While the Nintendo Wii is off and running in a different direction (quite successfully), the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are left in a shootout for honor... and exclusive games. A few months ago, we began to notice a shift in the tides after Microsoft unloaded a volley of its biggest exclusive games: games like Halo 3, Mass Effect, and BioShock.

But now it's 2008, and Sony's poised to win the year with a huge list of compelling PlayStation 3 exclusives. Curious to see how the fight will pan out, we formulated a list of exclusive titles for the PS3 and Xbox 360 coming in 2008 and 2009. With Wikipedia and our own notes as sources, we've constructed the definitive release calendar comparison.

But first, a few ground rules. This list will not include multiplatform games, sports titles, or downloadable software; we're focused on exclusive retail games. That means Grand Theft Auto IV is not a factor on this list, so go read about it here.

Ok...The PS3 Sucks, Two very average shooters that are only hyped by PS3 fans. Everyone knows its gonna blow. Ones riding on looks, the others riding on 60 player multi-player. By the way, none have the gameplay.

Fable 2 a sytem seller??? All that game does is destroy the name of Peter Molyneux, always a disappointment. It tries to reach for the stars but gets only as high as the toilet this game was made in. And Gears of War 2...The biggest piece of steroid garbage. With outdated graphics, a crappy meat model, and ass bad water physics that get out-trumped by Uncharted water any day of the week. Dont get me started on a million year old Too Human.

GoW3 almost certainly is going to be March 2009.

Too many of the 360 games aren't really exclusives:

Left 4 Dead
Splinter Cell Conviction
Alan Wake

will all be on PCs.

Gears of War 2
Fable 2
and most likely one of the Halo games will come later to PCs.

And Ninja Gaiden 2 will certainly have a PS3 Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma coming to the PS3 six months or so later. They already have their own PS3 engine written for the first Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

Microsoft in 2008 is really showing their tremendous first party developer weakness. Nintendo has about 2-3 times as many studios and Sony has about 5 times as many as Microsoft.

As for the games list. This basically confirms to me what i have been saying for a while. At least in my eyes ps3 has more titles worthy of my time. I still and probably will(by december, it will be 2yrs since i have had my 360 no rrod yet:)) have both consoles at least until the end of the yr. So i have the luxury of enjoying from both sides but its glad to know ps3 is stepping up to the plate.

The only reason why Gears 2 is going to be a system seller is because the 360 won't have a AAA shooter until November. LittleBigPlanet might be the biggest system seller of them all if you ask me. If the ball starts rolling and people see their friends playing it, it could be huge. I of course could be wrong.

Killzone 2 is also a system seller. The CG video probably sold some systems already. When the real thing hits some 360 fans (Who can't keep their hands off FPS) are going to pick up the silent black beast.

Personal opinion so it just might be only you. For some it'll be MGS4 or FF13 or hell even Alan Wake but i'm sure everyone will have a different opinion of the best game on this list.

Gears of War can never top that list. It's becoming the next Halo in terms of hype and overratedness. GoW didn't invent the friggin cover system. It wasn't even the first (recent) game to pull it off successfully. RS: Vegas was. And yet, all the fanboys compare every other shooter that has a cover system to Gears of War, ignoring the fact that the cover system is now practically a staple of the Shooter genre. That's basically like comparing Resistance to GoW because they both have guns.

Other than good use of the cover system, all it is is a pretty-looking shooter that only won widespread popularity because its fanbase of ex-Halo fanboys have never experienced anything as remotely tactical or logical as taking cover ever before in a video game.

And I bet you GoW2 will be more of the same, only with a few magic tricks like improved graphics to keep the kids entertained. Microsoft, with its preference for sales rather than innovation, won't change a thing if it wasn't badly broken in the first place (cough Halo3).

First losing ground in their console sales. Now software sales and with all the great PS3 games coming out tempers are rising. Face it, it's only a matter of time before that spontaneously combusting console you have is finished. Don't worry though MS will make you spend more money on another that will just edge out the PS3. Of course by then with the understanding of the PS3 architecture the new space heater will just start competing a year or two after release when the even better PS4 hits.

It will continue the story but even the gameplay mechanics are compeletely changed. Halo's were OK in the first place so they sohuldn't be changed as much but it is due for some remodeling now lol.)

The PS3's lineup seriously just MERKS the Xbox 360's. Its not even close. Spinter Cell, NG2 will be good games and probably AAA or very close(which doesn even matter its just a number) but they will be RENTALS. Splinter Cell just isnt MGS4. MGS4 will be amazingly over the top and MGS4's gameplay is Western now... its gonna be CRAZY good!!!

On top of all this I can't wait to see how much PSN has changed 6 months from now. Its not going to be anything like it is right now. Thats so cool. All these games and a ton of multiplayer games will have places to meet and talking to and launch into games from Home... you can plan your stratagies on maps. Killzone 2 is gonna have a HUGE Home element and So will Resistance 2. I cant wait. Haze is gonna be better than some people were saying too... they've had time to really polish it and the team behind Haze are really good FPS developers.

This is a horrorible list as none of these games even have dates with them. Half of the ps3 games are not coming out till 2009 or 2010. Halo Chronicles is also not likely to be out till 2009 or later. 3. Metal Gear Solid 4 (SYSTEM SELLER) no MGS game has ever been a system seller they sell to a small niche group maybe 4 will be different with all the hype sony is putting into. Fable 2 (SYSTEM SELLER) again I dont think this game is a system seller Halo wars will probably be more of a system seller just cause of the halo name.

I have 360 die hards waiting for mgs4 to come out to buy a ps3. Shyt load of japs are waiting for mgs4 and europeans. I dont think its a major system selling here in the US but in other countries MGS is huge. Socom should definetly be a system seller so many ppl waiting for that game its just redicolous. Yes I played the 1st Fable and I plan on getting Fable2 is actually one of the games I want the most that is coming out this year. However I dont think that opinion is widely shared. Rpg's (outside of japan) and MGS are niche games. A few hardcore gamers buyin a system for a game doesnt = system seller. Halo, Gta and FF are system sellers

Killzone doesn't need to kill Halo. Halo pretty much killed itself.
Last I heard, Halo3 was getting its ass handed to it by the multiplatform (and far superior) CoD4. Doesn't look like that's gonna change, what with new CoD maps coming out vs. the remakes of old halo maps for Halo 3.

And stop trying to use Killzone 1 against the not-yet-released Killzone 2. The whole point of making a sequel is to make improvements to the shortcomings of the previous game. Killzone was a good game. Yeah it had some gliches but what like Assassin's Creed didn't. Like Mass Effect didn't. Also you should know by now that nothing, NOTHING, looks as good as Killzone 2 which looks pretty much exactly like the trailer. You should be afraid at how good it looks and try to bring it down because there is nothing comparing to it right now. I bet you start crying at E3 this year when a new trailer is shown and you see how much farther along it is than the last trailer.

Speaking of "eyecandy" maybe you can explain how 5 hour long Gears was anything but that. Now Uncharted looks better and is technically more sophisticated.

Gears Of War 2 is the only real 100% system seller for 360 on that list but i think Halo Wars and Halo Chronicles will sell alot because you do have mad halo fans out there im not sure why because halo 1 is still the best halo game out there. everything else for 360 i'll get from gamefly Fable 1 suck so i can't say thats game will be a system seller as far as PS3 goes i think they have way more system seller Gran Turismo 5 . No APB?? I'm fairly certain that that has a 2008 release date for the 360 and I am REALLY looking forward to playing that game. I think Universe at War is also an RTS 360 exclusive if we are not counting PC in this stuff.

Another thing to note that several 360 exclusives have come out already this year, Frontlines Fuel of War(great game), Lost Odysesy (good game) and Kingdom Under Fire Circle of Doom (meh).

Anyway, both systems look to have some excellent games coming and this doesn't include the flood of multi-platform games on the way.

Frontlines Fuel of War is 360/PC but for the sake of the article we are not calling PC games multiplatform. We are talking console exclusives, I guess the way I look at it is if I owned a PS3 or a Wii I will not get to play these games. I happen to have a great PC gaming rig but many of my friends game exclusively on consoles.

Some people do not realize that it is that bad on the Xbox 360 hardware front...even the new machines are crashing...but I have a machine that is about 2 years old...and it still runs...do you know why? I never turn it on much. I know if i bought GTA4 and played it all the way through...my 2 year old Xbox 360...would not make it....My PS3 has been folding@home 24/7 for over a year...with no issues...and I would not be affraid to play all the way through GTA4 or MGS4 on that machine.

My roomy has a 360 Falcon that is as quiet and cool as his PS3. The 360 is on all night long and has been running great. There will never be a perfect system that never fails, there will always be some units that do. However, I really think the Falcon systems have eliminated the RROD problem for the most part. I mean MS did make the Original Xbox and that thing was built like a tank so it's not like they can't do it.

I am not here to defend the 360 and I still think the RROD is unacceptable but I don't think it's in anyones interest to continue to produce hardware that has the same design flaws as the launch units have.

The only game that's truly 360 only is Ninja Gaiden 2.

Too Human and Ninja Gaiden 2 are more of system sellers than Molyneaux's overhyped Fable 2; not saying it's bad, I'm saying it's more likely that Too Human which has been in development more than 10 years and NG2 which is a long time franchise will sell more 360s. Perhaps Splinter Cell should also be considered system seller... even more, Halo Chronicles and Halo wars, just for the name Halo should sell more systems. If Alan Wake is more than vaporware, it will sell systems.

Out of both of those lists the only games I would buy for sure on the 360 are Left 4 Dead, Gears of War 2, Splinter Cell Conviction. Its harder to say which ones for PS3 but I would say Haze, Resistance, Killzone, and GOW3.

All the other ones will depend on the reviews. Im still VERY iffy on MGS4. Im one of those who just didnt get it.

Also Fable 1 left me kinda cold so Im waiting to see what Fable 2 brings to the table before I buy it.

All in all I think they are both VERY solid lists, and show a departure in tone from last years FPS heavy list.

My take is their full of ****, the attachment ratio of the 360 shows that just about everything that comes out sells well over a million.

God of war 3 a system seller but not ninja gaiden 2? What kind of bias is that? Xbox only had 1/5 of the userbase of ps2 and sold about as good as god of war has. Im sure it will sell alot more on 360. Gears of War, Lost Planet, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Dead Rising all sold through alot of copies. You can garantee the sequels will do even more.

NG2, Gow3, and DMC4 are all more similar than any of them is to too human. Too Human is more an action RPG than any of those games, which are generally more just hack n slash than RPG.

PC/Console is still a Console exclusive to that console. They aren't directly competitive in nearly the same market as a multi-console game, so the end result is negligible. There's far too few PC gamers to really effect the exclusivity, especially considering a lot of the games are designed for console play. The fact that most PC ports are released 1-2 years later also (this goes for PS3 ports of original xbox games) doesn't compete with the sales of the original exclusive.

Goes to show that one good year in the console industry doesn't mean much, especially when the dust settled and the PS3 held it's own in arguably what amounted to what will probably end up being it's weakest year from now on (2007).

Difference between Resistance and Halo is that there were a lot of people who bought XBox just for playing first Halo, but most of Resistance buyers did by PS3 for playing GT5, FFXIII or MGS4 and they did get Resistance, because there weren't any other decent games available for PS3 at launch. So no system seller status for Resistance. At least not yet.

There is solid fan base for MGS4 in Japan and europe, but it won't be even close as good system seller as GT5, FFXIII or even GeOW2.

I’ve never played a Metal Gear Solid game at this point, but it is in the bundles being sold here in Blighty with the PSP, so if I like that version of the title I may well be tempted to plump for the PS3 & Metal Gear Solid 4, should a decent pack be available. Loved the first God Of War on PS2, so may well be tempted by the PS3 incarnation.

Of the 360 stuff I’m really looking forward to Left4Dead, which should be a purchase should reviews some through for it, likewise Halo Wars, but everything else cries out for a rent and no more. Is Gears Of War a system seller? Can’t say I clicked at all with the original.

Basically this list includes PS3 exclusive releases for years 2008, 2009 and even some in 2010 and Xbox360 exclusive releases for year 2008. All XBox360 games are at least planned to release in 2008. MS haven't release any information about exclusive games which will be released after 2008 and that's why this list is totally useless. If you want to compare XBox360 and PS3 exclusive releases, you should use for PS3 list which would look something like this:

I really liked the ninja gaiden on xbox black though was meh and the one on the ps3 was not much fun for me but i had beaten it at least 6 times already. It would have been a system seller if it didn't take them so long to release it. It's not a core franchise either like Duke Nukem. By the time it comes out, even it's target renders are going to look dated compared to other games releasing with it, and no, it does not look as good as the target renders.

It still looks good, but there are a lot of games that look a lot better and still look worse than the original target render.

Keep in mind that the in-engine demo of the original target render is just the same animation running in engine, not in game.

Summary: delay bad for killzone 2. Looks good, but not as good as original.

MGS4 is already a system seller Konami is already sold out of the MGS4 PS3 bundle. PS2 gamers will graduate to PS3 thanks to MGS4.
LBP will be a system seller since it will bring along a game that caters to all audience. The young and imaginative will find it unique.
Resistence 2 has + & - to moving hardware. The + being that some might be tempted by the online experience to buy a PS3. The - being most if not all R2 gamers already have a PS3 and played RFoM.
I feel the same way about GeOW2 it will not move a lot of systems most will be just migrating over from GeOW1. Sequals on the same platform tend to not move a lot of hardware. System sellers are helped by the new IPs or 1st time on the newest (Next-Gen) system especially when the hype meter reaches 900 degrees.

M$ is announcing solid lineup after solid lineup. Just because they don't have 15 filler games announced over the next 3 years to fluff their list is a credit to them, not a fault. 360 has had a good lineup every year since it was made, and almost every year people have said the exact same thing about it looking weak early on.

When you look at PS3's list, at least half the list is up in the air for whether it will be good or not, some don't have anything released other than a screenshot and a working title.

Right now Sony has most of their cards on the table. If you don't think they do, you're incredibly naive. There's a reason their the only ones with their lineup for the next 3 years already announced.

I just dont see it happening. I believe 360 has already hit its console selling stride with Halo 3 and Gears 1. Sure it'll be pretty wiht 10 enemies on screen, but thats pretty much it.

It's been a while since i commented on N4G and i see it was for a reason. I am going to go out and say that this article is wrong from the very beginning. Much for the same reasons the fan boys from both sides pointed out. (games coming out for PC, later coming to the xbox or ps3 just a few months apart) I'm really sick of people who think one system is better than the other. Both damn systems are worth purchasing. Xbox because of the game library, and online service (which is bad ace) and PS3 for one of the best if not the best for your money blue ray player. Along with the fact that is is very versatile as far as dvd, blu-ray,card readers of all sorts, removable and replaceable hard drives(laptop hard drives of which you can get reasonable prices for now) and also the fact that you can replace the operating system with one of your own (linex). Some of the down sides though are it's game library (is low now but will get replenished)in game chat, (not existent)no down loadable movies, music, and the socialization on line sucks to be honest. Now xbox needs to be criticized too. at first its failure rate, (but Microsoft warranties it, and is now fixed) IPTV isn't out yet, (tv over the internet through xbox service you can record too), no built in HD-DVD or blue ray player. (come on they could have chosen one or the other ya know, but they do have down loadable movies i guess). I could go on for days about why BOTH systems are worth purchasing. I own both, i play xbox a lot and i watch alot of blue ray movies (also HD DVD) I'm just sick of fan boys being caught in this battle over nothing at all. In addition, Halo Wars could well be a System seller, so could Ninja Gaiden and Alan Wake. It's all about the quality of the games (ala Gears of War 1), and they're being made by some of the very best on each genre.
