Sony: In-game communication, firmware 2.4 coming in Summer

Our momentum will continue with the introduction of in-game communication in the summer, firmware update 2.4 and the strongest line-up of games through our third party partners and our own studios. I'd personally like to thank our trade and business partners for helping us on the start of the PS3 journey says Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Ray Maguire

mighty_douche5898d ago (Edited 5898d ago )

Summer it is then guy's. MGS and in-game XMB.... happy days!

Time Lord5898d ago

and maybe even Haze...wow..its going to be great summer for us PS3 owners

Cwalat5898d ago

June 12, the day after i finish my examen, Swedish word for graduate.
No more school, 100% on job and earning some real money. Then after One year i'll begin studiying art and visual art, digital art.

June 12, the day MGS4 comes Out. Earlier in May, Haze, even Earlier in April 29, GTA4.

September, after hard sommer work, Killzone 2, Resistance 2,
Omg Happy Days indeed.

Exhaust5898d ago

Setting up games of COD4 with the phone is painfully inconvenient.

Disagree me all you want. Sony is hurting the PS3 taking so long for this basic feature. Should have been here on day one.

Disappointing.

Qbanboi5898d ago

Who else think that they are going to put this update on the MGS4. But, i mean, the kinda that says "Hey, you want In-game XMB a week earlier? Buy MGS4" And If a week earlier of in-game XMB is the little push for those who aren't sure if buying MGS4 on firstday, they may buy the game first day.

^^ I know i sounds stupid. And Sony probrably wont do that. But Marketing is marketing.

sonarus5898d ago

i am hoping in game xmb comes before the summer

cLiCK_sLiCK95898d ago

So i guess gamesblow was right? He did say to look foward to in-game XMB this week.....
He never said it was going to be ready to download.
I dont know..i thinking he knows alot of more stuff we dont know...

xsteinbachx5898d ago

yah ingame xmb would be nice, but you know i really don't care to much.. .. i'll just keep playing my games.

travelguy2k5898d ago

about in game XMB, only in game communication. and of course it will be in the MGS$ game disk. They would not release a game and then KNOWINGLY need to patch it within one week of release. Who do you think they are...Microsoft...lol ;>

Stubacca5898d ago

The PS3 is the greatest console on the market. The King Of Consoles. The wii is for kids, the X-box for idiots. And it pains me that the PS3 lacks the key feature of in-game XMB.

I wanna play my own tunes and message my buds at any time Mr Sony. Grant my wish as soon as possible and I'll spend more money on your games!

Deal?

Is it really that complicated of a feature? I think they're holding off in game communication until home's arrival. They've added features way more complicated than in game XMB in past updates.

mighty_douche5898d ago

it is rather complicated as you need to reduce the over all OS foot-print to allow a set amount of memory dedicated to the XMB. Thats actually a very large undertaking.

But i agree they might be saving it for HOME, as that way it seems like a larger update for the Playstation in general...

rawd5898d ago

And you know this because you are a Sony XMB developer?

Slayer OP5898d ago

He is probably a computer whiz.

RJ20005898d ago

TO 2.1:

Being a computer science major, I believe he is basically saying that they have to dig into the serious hardware issues before they can get the XMB working properly. Either way if they have to change how the hardware works they have to test near a million things to make sure it doesn't change things for the developers or even worse brick systems!

Exhaust5898d ago

If obvious Sony never considered universal in game voice chat during development. Like Douche said its an OS foot print issue. If the feature was built in from the ground floor it wouldn't be a problem but since its being tacked on its very complicated.

Even with the 360 having it on launch day a year before the PS3 came out Sony was asleep at the wheel.

I'm not a Sony hater just stating the obvious. Should have been there on day one.

To see a game like COD4 tell you to "exit out of COD4 to add friends from XMB" on the invite screen... That's sad.

Kleptic5898d ago

The original OS had nearly 70megs dedicated to the friends list, with another 30megs or so goin to the rest of the OS...althought i can't find the article that I read that in...it would make sense though...Ted Price commented on how the original dev kits for the PS3 that they worked on were using over 100megs for the OS during actual gameplay...but that Sony had been reducing that significantly immediately after the system launched...rumors now suggest that the PSEdge toolset upgrade/update (which was free) has the OS optimized down to under 50megs now (compared the the 360's 32)...

In either case...It is probably safe to assume that the in game messaging, at least, was originally there...but following the early negative feedback SCE recieved regarding the OS footprint...they very likely could have had to drop it for a while...and ever since have been figuring out a way to get the same functionality, with a quarter of the memory requirements...

it would have been easier for SCE and all developers had the PSN been completely unified from the beginning...meaning there was a protocol that developers had to follow to make all networking features identical...which is what MS requires with XBL...after this update the PSN will be fully unified...but it is definitely a lot more work for them to be fixing this now, than if it would have been this way before the very first game even started development...

vhero5898d ago

dont have to be a tech to know what hes talking about the last thing you need is for them to mess it up and it brick your console like MS have done with so many of thier updates.

moparful995898d ago

Exhaust shut up dude, you sound like a little baby... Do you know whats sad? A console that the maker knew was broken on release but released it anyway. Sony's method of launching the console and adding features that they can test properly and make sure they wont affect the operation of the system is a good idea.. People are too d@mn impatient.. I want what I want and I want it right now! Why can people sit on their hands and chill. I only care about being able to talk to people that im playing a game with... I could care less about not being able to view text messages, I'm playing a game if I wanted to talk to my friends I wouldnt be in a game........

akaFullMetal5898d ago

wow, just great, this summer is going to be really special for us ps3 owners

rofldings5898d ago

So there's a strong possibility home will come with this update..?

Andronix5898d ago

A massive Firmware update that delivers HOME and in-game XMB would be amazing. But, he mentions Firmware update 2.4. We are currently on Firmware 2.1. which possibly means 2 more minor firmware updates?

paul_war5898d ago

Obviously I was wanting this sooner, but as long as it works, I'll wait.

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Retro Review – Love Conquers All

Gary Green said: You’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard of the Ar Tonelico trilogy. The previous two games arrived so late in the PS2’s life-cycle that they simply went unnoticed. While most were tinkering with their shiny new PS3s, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia and Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica were being ‘returned to sender’ by your local Game stores. Luckily, you won’t need to have played them to understand and appreciate this third and final chapter, Qoga (pronounced k-yoga) tells the story of a racial war between humans and Reyvateils, a breed of biologically produced female cyborgs capable of reproduction, while still having a digital mind.

Oh my god. I kinda wish this would get a remaster on PS5, it would be awesome. One of my favorite games on PS3.

That and 3D Dot Game Heroes. It's a shame that some stuff is stuck on PS3.

Knightofelemia3h ago

Ar Tonelico 3 is good I still prefer the first AT game. The music is solid in all the games and Akiko Shikata is a very talented singer bringing life to the game. Only annoying part is well I find is Saki I always choose Finnel or Tyria. KOEI so needs to HD remaster the franchise along with Ar Nosurge and Ciel Nosurge since it never came to North America. I would day one the Ar Toneliceo games and Ar Nosurge if they were remastered.

I still have the limited edition of Qoga unopened. Unfortunately it never went up in value like I had hoped all these years.

Mugen Souls Retro Review – Sexy Demon Space Adventure

Gary Green said: We have a juxtaposition of 2D and 3D visuals, flashy turn-based combat, quirky anime characters with cheeky dialogue with plenty of partial nudity; Yes, this is a Compile Heart JRPG. Whilst the engine is borrowed from Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2, Mugen Souls is more of a Disgaea spin-off. It’s not a strategy RPG as such, it merely sits within Disgaea’s ever-expanding universe (Multiverse? Netherverse? Your guess is as good as mine). You won’t find cameos though, since Mugen Souls is a franchise which aims to stand on its own two feet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies1d 9h ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken1d 4h ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing691d 20h ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker1d 20h ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo1d 19h ago (Edited 1d 19h ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing691d 19h ago (Edited 1d 19h ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos1d 16h ago (Edited 1d 16h ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt1d 7h ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken1d 4h ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
