In the comments section of the official playstation blog, It has been confirmed that, the newly announced 80 GB version of PS3 will have backwards compatability.

Yes, similar to the Motorstorm bundle, the new MGS4 bundle features an 80GB PS3 with some PS2 backwards compatibility.

The 120GB was never to be. They were all just rumors going around. Also this is still software emulation since the BC engine was completely removed to reduce cost.

Well, this is still only the limited software emulation offered by the 80 gig awhile back.

It's not as bad as the 40 gig, with no backward compatability, but not as nice as the 20 or 60 gig, with full hardware backward compatability. The 80 gig is in about the same boat as the 360 in that regard.

Except, of course, the PS2 has a much larger library than the XBox.

I purchased an 80 gig PS3 with Motorstorm back in October and since then I have tested every single PSone and PS2 game in my collection, which currently stands at 32 PSone games and 42 PS2 games.

None of my PSone or PS2 titles have experienced any playability problems on my 80 gig PS3; even my ancient copy of Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete plays without any hiccups.

They never put an official word out that that they were discontinuing it. It was stupid rumors and guesses that were floating about the internet.

It was retailers. Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Gamestop ALL said the 80Gb SKU had been discontinued and they couldn't order any more. The failure on their part was that BUNDLE SKU was being discontinued and the new bundle will have a "new" SKU. So the retailers added to the fire.

There's a difference between being pulled and not receiving new shipments and discontinued. Sony hasn't shipped 80gb systems to my store or any other Gamestop in my district for sometime now. We're all but out and still asking for them.

This leads everyone, media and otherwise, to believe Sony has a new sku coming. & They do... wait and see.

If it were me... I'd drop every sku but the 40. Add BC thru firmware update to it and make it very well documented you can upgrade the HDD yourselves. Sony should even sell their own HDD's to further spread the word and know.

I'd then sell the system at 350 bucks

There really is no point in having the 80gig version if the 40gig had bc. I think that they only have it around because sony makes more money off it.
In Aussie and NZ, there is only the 40gig, which costs more than US$600. Probably when they run out of hardcore buyers, they will discontinue the 80gig, and put bc on the 40gig.

P.S what's there to understand? you live in the Netherlands right? well then the 40gb has no BC for PS2 games, but BC for PS1 games while the 60gb has full BC for both PS2 and PS1 games- the upcoming 80gb bundle will have the same BC capabilities as the 60gb

I'll think you do understand what I am trying to say guys, think you're smart enough for that.

We as console gamers that read the stuff a lot understand those multiple SKU's.

But to the mass customer... That one just picks a unit from the shop. Because the parents of the friend of their kid bought a PS3 that plays PS2 games, they just get one. They think all PS3's play PS2 games.

But after a while their kid finds out it doesn't play the same games as his friend. That's just plain stupid either way you twist it.

360 SKU's is a different story. One can upgrade with a HDD if they want. Not needed, because even with the Arcade one can go online but not download demo's etc.

But you can't upgrade the PS2 compatibility on the PS3...

i have a 60gb, but i rarely play my PS2 games

people buy a PS3 to play PS3 games and watch Blu-Ray films, no-one is goign to be too psyched about the lack of PS2 BC in their PS3 especially if they own a PS2 (which is very likely since there's like 122mil or something who have one)

if they bought the 40gb, but REALLY wanted to play PS2 games then they could just i don't know...... buy a PS2 (if they don't already have one and if they don't then they're not really gamers) which is dirt cheap nowadays

I was hoping you would show up after you stated it as a FACT that upcoming PS3's would not have BC, yet WHOA here it is. As to your LAME comment about some SKU's having partial, some full, etc. its a known fact (and has been since the 40Gb came out) that 40Gb isn't currently BC, whereas 60Gb is full BC since it has the actual hardware, and 80Gb has software emulation and thus is partial (which is between 60-75%). Not all X360 SKU's are 100% BC either, so your point was???

Now, as to the 40Gb SKU not having BC, Sony has said they could work out a software emulation for BC on the 40Gb but right now that isn't their focus. Why do you care, oh yeah you are only here to stir things up.

I have the euro model with SW BC. Only one or two of my old PS2 games does not work on it... the rest works. SW BC in general, works great. Will obviously improve, but at its current status, it is more than good enough. I have little fear when I go to the shop and buy some old PS2 games. Heck.. they are cheap... must have bought more than 10 PS2 titles since I got my PS3. Also have a lot of PS3 titles... but you know what... Nintendo has the right strategy. My kids don't see the difference. To them, Crash Bandicoot is new, because I bought it last week. Good old PS2 title... and they don't care as much as I do about 720p native 60fps. For them, the old R&C games is still wonderful.

P.S "some" probably means the same as the 60gb- which is through a mix of hardware and software emulation

nearly all PS2 games work with the 60gb, but some have certain issues while playing

these issues are getting fixed with firmware updates

Unlike 60/20gb models, 80gb SKU has PS2's CPU emulated by CELL.
However, in both consoles have PS2's GPU (which is quite difficult to emulate)
implemented, not emulated by RSX.

btw, the best way to find out about BC issues is Sony's site. I looked up all the PS2 games I'm interested in getting caught up on (Shadow of the Colossus, GOW2, Ark of Napishtim, MGS 3). It has all reported issues in a BC database and you can even select if you have the 60 or the 80 (which isn't really useful since the 60 gig really never has issues since it's 100%).

The 80GB will have the same compatibility as the current 80GB model, as they're just repackaging the system with new pack-ins. The 80GB model has about 85% compatibility, versus the 98-99% of the 60GB (according to Phil Harrison, may he rest in peace, er... Good luck, Phil!). That "Some" should be enough, esp. when what usually constitutes "incompatibility" is cut-scene, bgm, or loading screen glitches.

I say desperation because it is obvious that this game is huge. It isnt even sony's game to give away. I wonder what kind of payout they made to konami to let them include it in their system. Sony doesnt need to do this yet in my eye I see it as a method of paying for exclusives which I thought sony doesnt do. What kind of sales impact will konami feel if more systems are sold instead of the individual game? You have to figure that sony would be getting the games at or below cost. It isnt like they will be handing over a share of the bundle price to konami.

So does that mean MS will counter this with a bundle of geow 1 or 2 or halo 3? desperate times call for desperate measures.

Also, they have said they CAN make the 40Gb BC with software emulation it would just take a bit of work, they are focusing on a few other issues right now.
