Super-speed Internet satellite blasts off in Japan

Japan launched a rocket Saturday carrying a satellite that will test new technology that promises to deliver "super high-speed Internet" service to homes and businesses around the world.

The Associated Press said the satellite would offer speeds of up to 1.2 gigabytes per second.

Man, up to 1.2 GB. No more lag on multi player games, faster downloads, larger files, streaming HD movies are coming. I have heard Communication experts say that they see a huge leap in internet speeds over the next 5 years.

Sayai jin5906d ago

@CRIMS0N_W0LF - Your harsh words about americans or any other nationality americans will not be tolerated. It goes against N4G terms and conditions. Why do you assume we are americam? In Japan I did not have download limit was a a lot larger than 20 GB. What, countries will enbrace technology that will ultimtley increse the economy. Japan being one of them.

Regret5906d ago

Most of Japan citizens even now have speeds good enough to stream in HD quality without DL limit. They have been always few years in advance.

dantesparda5906d ago

These speeds for at least 5 yrs before they become mainstream

Satellite connections are going to have relatively high latency no matter how much bandwidth they have. The signals are going to travel at the speed of light, but even that is going to be too slow for a good multiplayer experience when the distance they need to travel is so great.

A satellite in geosynchronous orbit (always over the same spot on the earth) will be so far away that it'll take 100 ms for light to reach it, and then 100 ms back. Anything less than 200ms will therefore be impossible, and that's just one way.

TheIneffableBob5906d ago

AP made a mistake. I'm pretty sure by 1.2 gigabytes per second, they mean 1.2 gigabytes of total bandwidth. Bandwidth for individual users is usually measured in gigabits.

Wow, thats fast!! That definatley wouldn't take very long to download a full length HD 1080p movie. And people said that DD was far away; yeah this is still in tests but it will be coming soon enough, along with other countries following soon. My only question is, when is it coming to the US?

Rice5906d ago

WTF, whats with the language, he just asked a simple question....

Lord Anubis5906d ago

if you think the technology will be available in the next 5-10 years you are kidding yourself. Standardization takes years plus it takes more years to study the effect of the technology.

Sayai jin5906d ago

@CRIMS0N_W0LF- Regardless use said "Stupi* Ameri---s". The same if you said the sme thing about ny other nationality. Hence the s makes it plural meaning many. I have no problem with people disagreeing nd debating, but you took it to another level when you said "Stupi* Ameri----"

Keep it clean.

Back on topic. I posted this topic to show what technology is up and coming. Albeit 2 years or 20 years. I think it is still impressive and I wanted to share it with this community.

Delt45906d ago

after looking at your past comments you are definitely just another american bashing person who obviously has no idea about americans at all. you base your bias on one or two people you hear about in the tabloids and call your self educated..........NICE!!!! Thumbs up to you buddy!!!

Panthers5906d ago

Lot of American hate on here lately...

ravinash5905d ago

I would say this technology will be ready to go mainstream around the time Blueray is ready to go out in about 10 years time.
Its at the test stage now, then when it goes into production it'll only be businesses that will be able to afford it at first and then as it becomes more established and the hardware has been paid for will the cost come down for when the public will get access to it....so yeah, I'd give it 10 - 15 years.

wallace10005905d ago

Vote Obama, he will clean up the American image that bush has tarnished!!! I live in Canada and around here the image of Americans has really gone down over the past few years. I however play with lots of Americans on live and they are good people. The problem is that the majority of people judge Americans based on the actions of the idiotic few in power.

Can some tell me what the speed of 1.2 GB would cost a month? Probably around a mortage payment?

Sayai jin5906d ago

Yup, for right now it will be expensive, but do you remember how much DSL and cble cost at first. At first only corporations could afford DSl, fiber optic, cable internet, but a few years later it mainstreamed.

wallace10005905d ago

No doubt, if i wanted 25mb/sec down from the company i currently get cable internet from it would cost $100 a month. That is the highest that is offered from those guys right now. 1.2 Gb would be pricey :-S

Now I can sell my house in order to replace Blu-ray with On Demand. Oh wait.

HD Content On Demand won't become a reality until at least 10 to 15 years have passed. TV Resolutions will keep increasing for the sake of format makers. Internet speeds will have to catch up faster than TV resolutions in order to deliver the highest resolution possible for every movie. Ultra Hi-Vision will slow on demand adoption and require holographic media instead. 30 years from now maybe, just maybe resolution growths will slow in comparison with internet speeds. Maybe then, on demand will be the standard.

Until then, Xtards, get bent.

heyheyhey5906d ago

actually we will soon come to a resolution where the human eye can't notice a difference at all and therefore there would no need to increase resolutioon- same goes for frames per second, you cant advance too much there because the human eye can only see up to 75fps (i think)

but i agree- DD as a standard will not come around for 10 or so years

Lord Anubis5906d ago

heyheyhey have you ever been to the imax if you haven't then perhaps you should delete your comment.

heyheyhey5906d ago

@Lord Anubis

wtf???

my points are proven scientific facts- why should delete my comment?

with fps and resolution there is a limit, after which the human eye doesn't notice a difference

ShadesMoolah5906d ago

This kind of development most certainly makes a strong case for Digital Distribution. But as someone said will take years to be the norm. If MS has not invested in this project, them I'm confident it's taking a very close look at the technology.
