PS3 Hits 10.5 Million Sold

An Associated Press business article, dedicated mostly to the impending conclusion of that stupid, distracting "format war", has buried in its conclusion some PS3 sales figures. According to the piece, Sony have now sold 10.5 million PS3 consoles since launch. Which is good news for them, as it puts them squarely on track to meet their goal of selling 11 million by the end of March, a target they set themselves last December. Oh, before you go, those who like to dabble in the odd bit of conjecture and speculation should note that it's been Sony policy for a while now to count "sold" as a customer buying it from retail, not retail buying it from Sony.

i adopted one as well. its really sweet to see the program evolve and grow. i used to be able to pick out which dot i was in western ny, but now its overly populated with dots (at least the last time was home it was..)

had well over a hundred units as of September 2007...but it has been wierd at times since...I have a new ISP now, but still have a NAT 2 connection...yet I get an "upload error" when it tries to send in the completed work unit to stanford...I have tried reinstalling the program a few times, but it has yet to fix it...I hope the new update coming helps...

it sucks...I leave it on over night, only to find it stuck at that 'uploading work unit' message...and only having completed one unit...

and to whoever it was above...the main advantage of the PS3 over PC's and the 360 was the Cell processor...which screams at calculations like this...not sure why a 360 version never came out...it would take more 360s to get the same amount of processing power...but would still work...although, nearly every 360 owner admitted they would not be too happy about leaving their machine on over night running flat out like that...the 360 has a very minor issue with heat, but its not worth getting into in this article...

but yeah...the 360 could do it...and with an install base that big, it could match the processing power of the PS3 crowd as well...definitely wouldn't hurt...

How is sony able to track consoles sold. There are so many outlets around the world, they couldn't all be calling in; nor would they want to. So what's the difference between sold to customers, sold to retailers, and shipped.

To me, it appears to be a play with words.

It is IMPOSSIBLE for Sony to count consoles SOLD to PEOPLE.

There is currently no system in place that would allow Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft to count consoles sold to customers. Even using NPD and ChartTrack will not ensure accuracy as not all retailers give them sales information.

Like saying you went to the club and got 50 numbers, but when you examine the statement further the reality is that you asked 50 girls for their numbers, but only 2 gave it to you and those 2 numbers you got were wrong. LOL.

The problem is that no one calls those other companies on that, I think the problem is that people don't know what question to ask when presented with statistics.

Regardless, we ALL know that mostly when talking about the console war news on this site tends to focus on the US only, if you get down to it the PS3 is kicking A$$ worldwide and that is what really counts. I live in the US and am indeed an American (By Naturalization of course), but I think the Americans put a bit too much importance on what goes on here, as if its the only place that matters. Case in point, sports. How can you call something the World Series when you don't play anyone other than other American teams, except for that one Canadian baseball club. I guess the world consist of the US and Canada. Ridiculous.

Didn't mean to leave out the Wii, but that thing is a beast so there is no reason to bring that into the equation as I think they are dealing with another audience. I do believe that the PS3 is going to be the system that will begin to focus on that group of people in the near future.

For someone who was only boasting last year about studying for a diploma in economics, your very adept at using the wrong figures. Microsoft are at 17.5m. Your numbers are out by nearly 1.5m. The PS3 is now at 10.5m, so the difference is actually only 7.0m, not 9m.

Come this spring in Europe and other regions, the PS3 will reach its one year anniversary, and probably be at about 11m units. Take off the sales for USA and Japan in nov/dec of 2006 and your at about 10m units approx for global sales of 2007. Now if microsoft do the same sales this year as 2007 (that of just over 7m units), and Sony sell the same this year as last year, then that gap between the 2 machines by the end of 2008 will be greatly reduced.

But, sales don't stay constant Mart, you get spikes in sales, just like the 360 got a nice spike with the release of Halo 3. The PS3 hasn’t launched its big titles yet, and with the blu-ray win, you really think the PS3 sales won’t increase over last years sales? If the PS3 sells another 3-4m units more for 2008 over last years sales, and microsoft stay stagnant at 7m unit sales for 2008, that gap of 7m will be even more reduced. Will the gap be closed by the end of 2008, maybe / maybe not, but it could well be reduced by a considerable amount.

One more thing, thats just not me saying this, most financial reports and analyists studying the sales trends between the 360 and the PS3, that this site has posted many time since the beginning of this year, show the 360 sales in decline and the PS3 sales increasing.

That explanation enough for you Mart, and that’s without twisting figures, its just stating a very real possibility. For someone who studies economics, your not really very good at it.

I think PLAYSTATION Home is what's going to drive the console to sell a lot more. Why, because when people compare the multiplatform games they're going to simply say PlayStation 3 is the better console because of the capabilities.

Plus going to sites like this to find out what's going on with PlayStation 3 will be pointless if you have one. It'll have its own news running through the Home service advertisements are everywhere. The best part about is will be going to developer's spaces to get information on upcoming games.

ps3 has plenty of games, specially for the average consumer. May not have as much shovelware as xbox360, but as for quality titles it has done fine in its first year. Fall of Man, Heavenly Sword, Rachet and Clank, Uncharted, UnrealrealTournament, Ridge Racer7, Motorstorm, Warhawk, MLB07, PixelJunkMonsters, Flow, Calling all Cars, StardustHD, EverydayShooter..... Plus multiplats that where great if not better on sony's console Oblivion, GRAW2, Dirt, COD4, NBA2k7, FightNight round whatever. What did PS2 have the Bouncer... Price point, and crappy ports have been ps3s biggest problem. You could be right about competition being good for us gamers though. My plate is full, and loving this generation already. PSN in genral could be better, but its free, and makes ps3 aleast $300 cheaper than 360 by the end of systems life cycle.
