They both favor the 360. You can listen to the Capcom devs and they all say they get hard-ons for America.

Meh... I was one of those lucky fellows that got a 20 gig Playstation 3 (in order to get it on day one). Though I haven't mention it on N4G, it's one of the reasons I usually get Xbox 360 versions of Multi-platform games. However, I do value full backward compatibility over a larger hard drive. In the future, should I need more space, it is possible to replace the hard drive with a larger one.

For now, I just delete content after I'm done with it.

Sure you are complaining about a one time download, granted it is a long one. Blu-Ray is still in its infancy. It's comparable to a 1 speed CD-Rom player. Many developers are finding different tricks to get past the slow speed of Blu-Ray. One trick is to duplicate the data over and over. However a sure fire way to cut down load time is to install data on the hard drive. Plus, it saves development time and money. In the future, as developers learn to develop on Playstation 3, I'm sure you'll see less and less games having to be installed. Until then, it's a necessary evil that those wanting to enjoy Playstation 3 will have to put up with.

I have no intention thus far to purchase a Capcom title with the exception of Resident Evil 5. If RE5 has the install process I'll welcome it. I don't understand why they're the only developers that require it, but I really don't care whether it does or doesn't as long as I get to play the game.

I'm no expert programmer(I do dabble), so I don't know EXACTLY how to do it, but there is a way.

Uncharted, which is considered by many to be the best looking game on the ps3, has NO load times after the first one. "all" it takes is a streaming system. Load the next level while you are still playing the one you are in. Keep it in a cache on the HDD(or something), and BAM! When you need the data, its there.

Load times should be a thing of the past with the ps3, and if your games do indeed have load times, you haven't put forth 100% effort into your game. Because its possible.

There are really only two require a large harddrive install:

1) You are severely disc space constrained and had to use a very computation intensive compression algorithm to fit your data onto the disc. And you need to spend tens of minutes decompressing data to the harddrive that you couldn't possibly do while the game was running.

2) You need to stream data faster than the disc drive can handle so you dump a big portion of your game data to the harddrive.

Pretty much any other loading off the disc can and should be done as background streams to a temporary harddrive cache that goes away when the game quits.

Capcom had decided to go pure lowest common denominator this gen with their PC based engine this and their other games are using. They are most certainly doing their main development running on PCs with the game data all stored on their machine's internal harddrives and at the last minute getting the game to run with the least amount of effort on the PS3 devkits. Hence the inane harddrive install requirements.

Capcom isn't getting a cent from me this gen. It will take them years to get their reputation back.

These reports are getting lame. I have a 60GB hard drive so I don't care. I don't load my drive up with music and photos. I delete demos when I'm done with them too. If drive space becomes a problem I'll just buy a new drive. So far I like how fast DMC4 loads. As for the install, while DMC4 installed I went for a walk and got some exercise. Oh, is that a dirty word for this guy? He's probably pasty and fat from laying around all day.

I defended the DMC issue because I thought it was a one off. If Capcom are forcing their customers to actually upgrade the PS3 HDD then they might aswell not develop games for the platform till they learn how to actually use the streaming technology like the others know.

I think, since the ps3 has already been proven to read multiple formats even without Linux, that Capcom is dumping their xbox 360 code into these installs and then making the consumer's Ps3's finish their work for them.

Think about... you take some crucial code zip up into a file source the ps3 is capable of reading "which basically everything" and then toss it on the disc for us to install and our Ps3's to retrieve.

First Devil May Cry 4, then Lost Planet. Both need a 5GB/20min install.
The thing is there are plenty of other games on the PS3 that are high quality & power hungry but dont need this.
Look at Call of Duty 4, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Ratchett and Clark, Burnout Paradise.

There are plenty of studios who can make PS3 games with short load times and without a 5GB install. It sounds to me that Capcom haven't got to grips with PS3 hardware. This is more a reflection of Capcom not bothering to optimise for the PS3. For such a big company, it really doesnt reflect well on them.

I haven't had any problems with DMC4. As for the install, maybe Capcom just came up with their own way to do things on the PS3. It's not like the game takes a long time to load. I only wait a couple seconds here and there.

I'm sure they probably are working more on the 360 since they seem to care more about that piece of crap but at least the PS3 games look and run as good as the 360 versions. Much better than what Ubisoft did to us last year.

Maybe next year they'll change and push the PS3 more, once they see the truth about the PS3 and 360. For now I'm not worried about a 20 minute install and 5GB of space being used.

I bought DMC4 for PS3 instead of 360, and the initial installation is no biggie. I threw the disc in and went off and did some stuff around the house. Came back in 25 minutes and it was done. I dig the idea of installing game data on my HD to cut down on load times. If this feature wasn't available people would be pissing and moaning about the lack of it.

Next is well, if the 360 can do without an install, then why not the PS3. That then leads to a, which is better debate. If some guy owed both system, the game looked exactly the same on both systems and the only real difference being one has a 5 gig 20 min install, which do you think the average person would get. Changing your HDD is as easy as 1, 2 and 3... You take your side plate off... the one that says (HDD) on it. You unscrew that blue bolt and you slide your HDD out and replace it with you new one. It's terribly easy.

I have a 250 gb hdd in mine right now and haven't even went below 200gb. I have every PSN game damn near. Tons of game saves, all my music and a folder full of movies on it.

The thing about Capcom doesn't bother me space wise... it's the fact they're forcing you into it. It's unacceptable.

I'm not sure what people are so upset about. Everyone with a PS3 has a HDD. Sure the devs shouldn't have to install 5 gig of stuff on the HDD but if they need to so that it runs better then let them do it. If you run out of disc space everyone knows how easy it is to install a new HDD in the PS3. We have the ability to self improve our PS3 to some degree. If this is becoming a trend we can modify accordingly. I think it's great.

I never realized there was a loading problem with the 360 version must be an actual PS3 issue devs are not telling us about (of course Capcom games have some of the most detail that any games have on the market.

They gave up on DMC4 and just added blurr to hide the flaws and didn't do anything with Lost Planet according to what 1up said.

Man this is going to be a problem with whats coming to PSN ontop of games needing to be installed. 20 and 40 gig PS3 owners are going to have problem shuffling content. They should sell the PS3 without a HDD and lower the price so people can buy their own HDD.

on the PS3 version is because its a port or multiplat, and is therefore not optimized for the PS3. Examples: Uncharted - Optimized, Devil May Cry 4 - not optimized(multiplat) Ratchet and Clank - Optimized, Lost Planet - Not Optimized (multiplat).

Why have a HD if you're not going to use it to improve performance and/or capability? I bought a 40G PS3 that is now 120G with a HD twice as fast as the stock HD for less than $100. And whenever I get ready, I can pop in a 200G. It's so easy my girl can do it. I wish I could do that on my much more expensive Xbox 360 (no user serviceable HD, no wireless, now HD Audio/Video).

PS3 wins again. Pretty soon my Xbox will be collecting dust. Now, with multiplatform titles even though Live! is superior and PS3 will never have an achievement system as accessible as the Xbox, I need a reason buy the Xbox version. there are plenty of other games that don't require 5gb installs so i will buy those. capcom is going to make at most 2 good games which are resident evil and dead rising in the future, so not that worried about it. i do agree that 5 gb is large, but it's just one company. other companies are going to give options instead of forcing. everyone would have upgrade eventually so this would be a good start. Still, i just canceled my preorder of LP cause i don't want to support this crazy bs Capcom seems to try to stuff down our throats. If the install was optional, ok, for better loadtimes i would even do it, but i won't support a company that fails to get their PC engine running good enough on the PS3 to support streaming like all the good games do.

I did not have to install Uncharted on my PS3, and surprise, zero loadtimes and no problems reading from the BluRay.

Though what is mostly overlooked is that this is only true for SINGLE LAYER DVD. As soon as DUAL LAYER DVD come into play the 12X drive reduces its speed to 6x min - 8x max = ~8MB/s - 9,6MB/s

Result? as soon as DL DVD is the most used disk for stuff the 12X DVD drive is no better than the 2X BD drive. To try to explain MASSIVE loadtime differences based upon this is fanboy fud at its finest.

What happened Capcom found a way put the game on oone discs without waiting a 20 min grace period? I have DMC4 for the 360 and my Cousin has the PS3 version and the only difference i see is the PS3 version Slows down whent he action get heavy (Just like in every other Multi-platform game).

Since this beggining 2008 I would have bought DMC4, burnout and Lost planet , those are the most exciting games for the moment(quite slow beggining in my opinion for this year )
If I had a 40dd on my PS3 I would be quite pissed , cuz with all the demos plus having to install my games the 40 gig would be filled up way too fast.
I know you can replace the dd but that would just make my PS3 purchase more expensive and since those who bought the 40dd model are those who couldnt afford the 60 or 80dd model its not that easy to upgrade.

Now may saved game data is something I do not delete. I don't wish to fill my Harddrive up with needless installs just to play a game which can be played on a 360 without any installs and very low load times.

In some forum I read from some dude that the PS3 version of DMC4 has zero load times... No need to lie Craig~~. This gives you 1-2 second load times. 360 might have 2-3 second load times. Wow...huge difference. Sign me up for the extra second load time without wasting 5 gigs of my harddrive space.

The reason I'm having problems with all of this is because this is not a "large" game to begin with. Any game that fits on a Dvd-9 disk should be able to stream directly from BR disk.

As it was stated above, a dual layer DVD streams slower than a PS3's BR player. This is a given. So we know it is not the inferior data transfer. Lets make it know PS3's BR player is not that much faster than the Xbox 360 DVD player.

Now the final part of all this. The game isn't larger than 9gigs of info total. So why in the hell would I need to install 60-70% of the game on my HDD?

Sorry Capcom, ya'll need to come up with a better press release than ya'll did for DMC4 saying its because of near Super Nintendo load times.

Pretty much my point. As often as people like to tout that X system is better than Y, the basic principal is both are more or less equal. Such as the PS3 is better at simple number crunching while the 360 has better processor parallel support. And on top of that, Lost Planet does not appear to be graphical intensive when compared to other games. So all things being equal there is no reason the PS3 shouldn't be able to play the game outright like the 360 can. Unless of course there is something we don't know about, this being the more likely case.

In any event, it sucks that PS3 owners have to do this, but it's a decent enough game(Lost Planet, haven't played DMC yet), not great, but decent. At least for anything below 30$...

All consoles have trade-offs. You want BluRay basically for free, well it's denser and reads slower than a DVD, so you have an HD install. The PS3 has significantly slower bandwidth in several areas so it loads slower, you can have the Cell and HDD installs or Xbox 360s Power-PC and fast loads.

When you add it all up, I think the PS3 with its installs is a better value. It's unlikely even a 40G drive will be filled with DivX movies given it's compression ratios. If it is, the movies are probably illegal anyway. If you really do have that much media, 40G is going to run out anyway and only with the PS3 can you easily and cheaply upgrade to your heart's content. For the cost of 1 video game, about $65 which includes tax, you can triple your HD space with ease. You cannot do that with an Xbox, you have to buy their 120 for $179. For $179 you can add a 320G hard drive to your PS3. This is not even possible on an Xbox 360.

Although your post has a good point, I just wanted to point out that the CELL processor is also based on IBM's PowerPC architecture (although heavily modified and with SPUs).

I love how the PS3 allows you to upgrade your own HDD with any 2.5" sized HDD (unlike Microsoft's propriety HDD for 360), but, like many other PS3 owners, I am annoyed with CAPCOM's decision to make the 5 GB intallation MANDATORY. Games like Ninja Gaiden Sigma (which play far faster and more smoothly than the slow-as-hell Devil May Cry 4) give you the OPTION to install parts of the game. Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank don't even require it (and yes, I know it's been mentioned many times here XD), and they are far more superior graphically to Lost Planet (and DMC 4), and have nearly zero load times.

Here is the funny thing about that... one of the games you are refering to is LO (4 discs)... I'm currently on the 1 disc and I already played over 25 hours... and yet I've not been asked for the 2nd disc... and since I currently own many games... I probably switched the game like 8 time since I started playing the game... do you see why I don't care about multi disc? because I still have to switch the disc to play other games... now if you tell me that every PS3 game comes in 1 disc and I don't ever have to open my disc tray and I would be happy... but if what you are trying to save is a 20 second trip to the console to insert disc 2 and you don't mind installing for 25 minutes... and still have to get up to switch to play the other game... ohh and not every game require multiple discs... Regarding Lost Odyssey, you forgot to mention the fact that it takes anywhere from 3-8 seconds to load between maps, and up to a MINUTE between cut scenes (which is RIDICULOUS for any RPG game, and the first time I've ever had to experience this BS load time for ANY RPG, whether on my 360, PS3, PS2, Xbox, GC, DC, PS, SNES, etc. except for Jade Empire for Xbox, which took forever to load every time I enter a building or area)

Let't hope this is only capcom being lazy and that developers don't start doing this.. because if it does, it will be interesting how this can become a problem to Sony. Currently games on the PS3 are relatively small and Sony games are not being published in 50GB or 200GB blu-ray discs... if games continue to grow (which by the way, the main reason why blu-ray was added to the PS3). If now that the games are so small in comparison what will the install be like when games like Metal Gear are released? It's common sense... the bigger the disc capacity the bigger the reading speed should be. Even if blu-ray drive were able to read at the same speed of the xbox 360 drive it would be enough since textures and game assets are larger... Why do you think Microsoft is being trying to push so hard compression technologies, new codex, ways to compress textures, the ability to generate game assets like trees dynamically without storing it on disc?

People forget about this small detail.. they think that blu-ray disc capable of storing 500GB of data.. and they don't even think about how long it would take to read that amount of data at a speed that other disc player like DVD are reading only 9GB... even the xbox 360 is slow... microsoft added lots of tools that allow them to compress and generate game assets removing the need of reading as much data at the PS3 requires... This is the reason why multiplayer games are smaller in size the the PS3 games. Developers will use xbox 360 compression technologies that allow them to no only remove file size but also loading time. Some of these technologies are NOT available on the PS3 since they are only available on DirectX and Xbox 360 API... so, what do developers do? well, they don't re-invent these technologies they simply put the raw game assets on the blu-ray disc which now require loading to be larger... so, they simply install them on the hard drive to compensate... what do you think it was going to happen? remember that was the blessing and the good thing that Sony added the hard drive to every SKU... no? also, I'm sure Sony knew this was going to become an issue... unlike the PS2 hard drive Sony allowed anyone to change the hard drive at will.. instead of profitting from it like microsoft is doing... they did it during the PS2... why not now? imagine if the PS3 would have a propietary hard drive now? and games require installation? that would be a big problem. Also, why is Sony not doing something about this? Why are they passing certification for games that can cause problems to gamers and their brand? They can enforce that these installation are made optional... why are they quiet about it? Why are they ignoring the whole situation? Instead why are they encoraging people to swap the hard drive to accomodate these mandatory installs or even releasing new SKUs with larger hard drives? Something fishy here...

I played half way through Lost Planet on my pc before it was announced for the ps3 then stopped as i want to play it on a 42inch HD plasma.
It's a good game imo which i was thoroughly enjoying so i'm not sure why some are dissing it, has the 5gig install been confirmed as the official Playstation magazine here in England doesn't mention it in the review.
Just for the record they give it 8 out of 10 which going on my pc experience of it sounds about right to me.

Have they ever definitively articulated what this 5 gigs of data is meant to do? I would be curious to know what exactly this does for the games performance. Though I don't see a 20 minute one time installation as a factor that should stop someone from buying the game if they like it, it is none the less strange to see other shooters that seem similar from other companies omit the lengthy installation process that Capcom seems so powerless to do without.

On a related topic, I played the online MP demo of this game and its seriously was garbage in my opinion, the controls were a bit loose for my taste, but in all fairness, the single player portion could be better. I haven't given Capcom my money since Street Fighter Alpha and this game sure won't compel me to change this fact.

This "news" should be reported and shared with everyone, as I am not a fan of censoring the truth. I understand that bluray is the winner and the space on the disk is massive but in reality most of these games fit perfectly fine on a dvd 5g install on most of these games so why all the hubbub over the great disk space for gaming?

then u would get the full version of gears of war and eternal sonata, o and no 4 disc laggy lost oddessy, or 3 disc blue dragon, and more stuff cut out of games cuz it doesnt fit

To try and see Capcom justifying this sh!t when games like Killzone 2, MGS4 or Resistance 2, for example, don't require any of this 5GB install to run 20 times better on the PS3 than any Capcom game will ever run.

But hey, its Capcom, what else could we expect?

I don't know what to think of it. I just know this is the first time in console gaming history that I can't just put in a game and play it. Certain PS3 games have to be installed, not necessarily a bad thing, but if I have to wait 20 minutes, I could get annoyed...

Then of course we can delete them if we run out of space...but then we would have to wait another 20 minutes again. I'm not sure if it's worth it to cut out a few seconds of loading time...i don't think it is.
