80GB PS3 Discontinued in Favor of 120GB Confirmed via GameStop Conference Call Today

A GameStop conference call held today reported that Sony has discontinued production of the 80GB PS3 in favor of a 120GB or higher model.

Everytime I see news like this I'm glad I didn't rushed to buy a PS3... in reality the games I really want are not out yet.. Metal Gear and Final Fantasy... buying a PS3 as many did would mean... I would pay pay almost 2 time more and get almost 2 times less... and still not be playing the games I wanted to buy it in the first place... it seems that by the time the real games come out... the PS3 will cost $299-$350 and probably have a 200GB hard drive...
Specially knowing that Sony is trigger happy as far as price drop and changing SKU is concern... great things for those who can wait and at the end of the day will play the very same games... but just a little later.

actually i am glad I got my 60 gig when i did. I got complete backward compatability and all the bells and whistles along with it. The 120 gig is a gimped version of the 60gb beside the obvious hdd. Luckily I can replace the hdd anytime i want.

I'm so happy I got my 60gig right when it went down 100 bucks. at 499 USD, I then sent in for the 5 free blu-rays, and traded those in at Walmart, resulting in another 105 bucks off (I kept one of them, resulting in lower savings). Then, I put in my own 160gig HDD for 89 bucks. Unless Sony puts out this new SKU very competitively priced, I don't really think I'll be very disappointed with my choice.

I, personally, like having full BC since my PS2 is in another room as a DVD player. However, I doubt they will make the 120gig only 599. They are adding so much in it, there would have to be a catch, be it no PS2 BC ,which I had heard some rumors about, or a big price spike, we'll all see if it turns out to be any good compared to the original 60 gig. BTW, the 5 free blu-ray deal ended on the 29th, and it MAY be continued again, as it was extended once before. It really depends on how they think the HDDVD vs Blu-ray war is going, and if they want to keep the deal going since HDDVD is also doing that deal.

The context when looking at his comments in sum total are revealing, which is why he raises so many protests. His interests lie purely... At this time are totally inane and moot. Clearly people are going to pay $600, $500 and $400 for a PS3/Blu-ray player so dropping the price is not worth their loss.

The Hard drive market is very volatile. New models come in while others get phased out.

If you notice hard drives tend to phase out at the 80 dollar range. Meaning the fixed cost in overhead (storage, matrial and logistics) might be floating close to that number .

Bare in mind a 200 gb hard drive may cost the same as a 120 gb hd.

Im pretty sure their contract for their 80gbs are dying off and they are forced to go for a 120 gb.

Ive had mine little over a year. I have the 60 gig version and I'm very happy with it. If I need to upgrade the HDD it's no big deal. I don't mind paying $100 to $200 more for a years worth of playing. And believe me I played it all last year. It's the only system I have and the only one I want. If you have a 360 or a Wii then it was worth the wait.

That is untrue. Current 7200 rpm drives are no hotter than the 5400 rpm counterparts. Their only issue is that in the PS3, they offer no attainable speed increase over a 5400 rpm drive. Also, 7200 rpm drives are currently limited to 200gig max.

I still have a need to play PS2 games. How cool would it be to speed run through the entire Metal Gear Solid saga before firing up MGS4? that would wrap up the series quite nicely in my opinion.

PS2 came out when I was in college. It's all about nostalgia. BC is very important to a person like me, and I don't mind spending more to get it in a PS3.

I think that the BC was really only important near launch when the ps3 was lacking in games (Bully was one of the first games I played through on my ps3). Now that there is no shortage of decent titles, it isn't as much of an issue.

Do not beleive whoever told you playing a DVD will harm the BD player. PS2 games are on DVD, and all BD drives are backwards compatable. Sony is not removing B/C because the DVD is hurting the BD player, but because we as customers want a cheap PS3 and the only way Sony can do that is removing the un-necessary features as part of cost reduction.

In short, no, you will not hurt your PS3 by playing PS2 games or watching a standard DVD movie.

This is my year to buy a PS3. I am a PC gamer mostly, but I do have a PS2. I am really happy about waiting to buy a PS3 because Sony keeps upgrading their hardware. I would love a 120GB HD in a PS3, but I know I can always upgrade anytime. Anything under 100GB isn't worth it to me. I am having trouble keeping my current PC's 200GB HD from filling up with music, movies, and games. I think the hard drive issue is going to be huge this year with the release of PlayTV, the Tivo-type service Sony is launching. I also wanted the DS3 to get put into the system. I never have gotten the whole SKU issue. I think they should offer 3 different types as a minimum. I don't want to be stuck with only one choice. Since they are experimenting with the PS3 as a home media system we have to understand they are trying to reach a broad market. I dont think that can be done with just one SKU. People want it for games, some want the Blu-Ray player, but most want both. I like having the freedom to decide which one is right for me.

Even though the PS3 has seen more SKU's then Michael Jackson passing out Jesus juice to little boys. It doesn't really affect me and my 60gig.

WHY? because the original 60gig is the best sku to date. It has the most inputs and features that were either cut-down (like the USB ports) or all together eliminated (like full BC).

It's rare in the history of electronics that the first generation product is the best built and feature full of all the skus.

All the new skus help bring in new consumers which is always welcomed, but the best part is that first gen buyers aren't screwed in the end. So what, the new consumers get 10%, 20% or 100% more HDD space, thats an easy fix for first gen buyers. But at least first gen buyer have 4usb ports, wi-fi, full BC, and some features not found on the newer skus.

Of course all of this only makes sense if you bought the 60gig, if you bought the 20 gig......well at least you have full BC.

There are plenty of titles to download off of PSN, lots of great titles. Warhawk, Stardust, Tekken Dark Resurection, Pain, Pixel Junk Monsters, just to name a few. There are also lots of PS1 classics.

I might agree that for the casual gamer, hard drive space probly isn't a big selling point for them. But stating there are no titles on PSN is just a fanboy statment. Grow up.

Hey Just wait you to know That you can use a 72RPM HD!! Look in the manual page 16 it does not say you have to use a 54RPM HD. I also called sony and they said that we could use a 72RPM HD and if you don't believe me call for your self. Proud member of the 60 gb club with 6 games (The Orange Box is a SWEET deal). My HDD is a cool size, if i want more space just bought another one, if i want a DS3, the same story. I hope this works for the undecided ones and give a chance to the PS3.

I'm happy that I got the 60 Gig when I did. Even though it was a year before anything good came out, it was worth it. 60 Gigs is plenty of space on the PS3 and I've downloaded everything and have pictures and music on it to boot. Why they need a 120 Gig model is beyond me.

If you check dell.com you smallest laptop HD is 60 and maybe by next year the standard will be 80gb. Maybe that's why the xbox 360 20gb HD cost so much. No HD manufacturer is mass producing 20gb anymore.

I've bought an 80gb PS3 a while back, its great and does everything I want but there is one thing the bothers me... power consumption. I heard the 40gb version uses more than 1/3 less power and now I hear that Sony is working on a 45nm Cell which supposedly uses 1/2 the power of the 40gb. So if you do the math, the new 45nm Cell PS3 would run 2/3 less power than the original PS3's (20gb, 60gb, 80gb) Ouch!

Lets break it down.
20/60/80gb discontinued models 200 watts
40gb current model 140-150 watts
40gb/120gb? 45nm PS3 unreleased?? 75 watts???

I may have to sell my current PS3 and buy the new 45nm PS3 when its released. Maybe 3rd or 4th quarter this year.

Disk drives become cheaper. People look at the HD size as a critical spec. So the XB360 is 120GB, now the PS3 is also.

Because the 120GB HD cost the same, they give you the 120GB for the same price. You win. What confusion? It is a common of the shelve component that they just give you the benefit of passing the saving on to the consumer.

I would call it a choice. You have the choice of being able to play ps2 games or not. I chose not not to, so I bought the 40gb ps3. I still have my ps2 and when it eventually breaks I will have a choice of upgrading to a ps3 (which will be cheaper by then) or buying another ps2.

And I don't mind waiting for for MSG4,Killzone2, RFOM2, Socom, Final Fantasy and God of War3. Are you a 360 owner? I don't think I would ever buy one until they fix there hardware issues. What are all the 360 owners going to do after the three year warranty is up and there 360 breaks on them?

As far as options. If Burn Out Paradise is any indication of options. I think the xbox360 will be adding options. That would be Hard Drive Option required if you want to play this game.

Why would they further their costs by adding a 120GB HD? The Ps3 one ups the 360 in this department by the user being able to upgrade to a Hard drive size of their choice! If they can add the 120gb hd for the same price as the 80gb. You will see it on their new sku. When they came out with the 40gb ps3 the price of the 40gb hd was the same as the 20gb.

20gb used to be the standard. Then it went to 40 and now it's 60 gb. Soon HD Manufacturers will discontinue 40 gb. I still don't understand why Msft is still selling the 20 gb add on. It's definitely costing them more money than than a 40 gb would.
