PlayStation 3 has sold 5 million in Europe

The PlayStation Network's success in Europe has been a surprise to David Reeves, President of SCEE. In an interview he reveals "We've now got about 2 million PSN registrations. That's about 40 per cent of users." Which means that, using his figures, approximately 5 million PlayStation 3 consoles have been sold in Europe.

He also reveals that the PlayTV DVR add on will launch in 5 EU territories in late April, and Home is on track for a Spring release.

users do have multiple accounts, but Reeves says the 2 million PSN accounts (probably multiple accounts) is 40% of the installed PS3 base.

-well thats how i read it!

resistance1005941d ago

It depends if they just count per ps3 with a account. I know with the casino royale offer they only gave you the free disk to the first account created on that console

toughNAME5941d ago (Edited 5941d ago )

yeah I was just going to say...

judging from the PSN users on this site, every PS3 owner has like 5+ different accounts

Also, 40% for a free service seems a little low ??

EDIT - LOL wtf?
comment 1,1.1,1.2,1.4,1.5 -->>> all have no agrees or disagrees...yet I get 5 fantom disagrees? Does anyone even read what I write anymore? or do we just automatically disagree with the xbot?

Meus Renaissance5941d ago

I honestly don't know how relevant that is if you consider the fact that the vast majority haven't even signed up to the PSN. An even smaller percentage would have thought of the initiative and method in creating a duplicate account to access the American PlayStation store. But even then, do Sony Europe only count the accounts linked to European countries or ones linked to PAL machines?

I don't know.

actas1235941d ago

This doesn't mean less than 5 million ps3s sold in Europe. The multiple account statement means the percentage of people who have accounts is simply lower than 40% of the pas3 owners.

mikeslemonade5941d ago

This is sold through. PS3 sold 3.9 million so far in the European territory.

Kwertie5941d ago

The Wii's online service has a 40% rate too, however I think it's more of a case of what type of service it is, rather than the cost

Bonsai12145941d ago (Edited 5941d ago )

well tough, at most, europeans tend to have three accounts. in the us, they have 2, and in japan, they only have 1. that way, they have access to all the demos whenever they come out.

so your comment about 5 accounts was a little outrageous and caused people to disagree with you.

i'm willing to bet that sales in the US will shoot up after the release of mgs4, like the ps2 did with the release of mgs2

zambrota5941d ago (Edited 5941d ago )

@mikes

Vgchartz undertracks ps3 numbers and we have seen the proof on numerous occasions.

I believe in those numbers

look at some abnormal bots who are tweaking the story

That’s about 40 per cent of users ==== 2 million

he didnt mean multiple accounts/crap

he meant that 2 million represents around 40% of ps3's base in europe. just look at the xbots tweaking the story

calis5941d ago

Who'd create a multiple account for Europe? They are the last to get everything. There is zero point to it.

Kenshin_BATT0USAI5941d ago

When you make a psn acc. there is an option to activate your ps3 (no idea what it does) but you can only do it once, they track it through that.

Sarick5941d ago (Edited 5941d ago )

Each PS3 has a serial number when you sign on. It doesn't matter how many accounts you have these unique numbers are registered to each PS3 once a user logs on. It'd be easy to detail the actual units just by ignoring the user accounts entirely and taking a into consideration these unit serial numbers. This'd make it easy to differentiate the multiple account users with actual consoles.

Say I have 5 accounts and 2 PS3s.

On the first ps3 I have accounts 1, 2 and 5
All are linked to system serial 0001

On the second PS3 I have 1, 3 and 4
On the second one all are linked to system serial 0002.

All those multiple accounts would still register as only 2 ps3's.
Why? As you can see account one is linked on 2 ps3's. Even with this account on multiple PS3s the secondary serial number determines the actual hardware numbers across all user accounts.

"We don’t often mention competition but I will give you some interesting data. In terms of installed base in some of our major markets, such as France, Spain, Germany, Italy, plus some distributor territories in smaller markets like Switzerland, our current cumulative installed base is now higher than that of Xbox 360.

It has not quite yet reached that in the UK. But the team here expect to overtake installed base of Xbox 360 across PAL territories in late summer. I would say before, but that is when we think we will overtake Xbox 360.

It’s worth mentioning that last week we outsold Xbox 360 in PAL territories by a ratio of 3:1."

Nuff said. 360 is dead by January 2009. Sony's dominating Japan, dominating Europe. All that's left is North America. And, games like GT5: Prolouge, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet and HOME will all be perfections that will murder the Xflop.

craymoogy5941d ago

it's true, 360 won't be dead, but ps3 will surpass it probably by the end of this year or early next year.

360 is good, but blu-ray is now coming back to haunt it. 360 should have had a built-in hd-dvd or blu-ray, but blu-ray is already winning, so yeah, too late for MS to have new drive now.

InYourMom5941d ago

And the PS3 is dead in NA.

You can't have your statement without accepting mine, they both make equal amount of sense.

Every USA PS3 owner I know has an account made for the European PSN. This is yet another stretch, where Sony exagerates and their fanboy numbskulls instantly believe it.

captainpwn5941d ago

Dead in North America?? No. You see, what I look at is how the numbers increase. PS3 went from selling 150k in October, to 450k in November, to 800k in December. Sure it's expected during holiday, but for a console that according to you is "dead", don't you think a 6X increase is a lot in only 2 months?

Now, take a look at 360 worldwide(since that's what we're comparing). They've recently been constantly declining. The 360 had a small boost in Japan temporarily, but is now again flopping as usual. In Europe, Sony keeps on taking customer by customer and capturing the audience, as shown by the 3:1 sales ratio. And finally, in North America, 360 is doing exceptionally well, but how long will that last? It's pretty obvious that us Americans will swallow up consoles if there's an awesome game on it. PS3 hasn't had many in 2007, I'll admit. Well, take a look at this year's lineup.

You think Gran Turismo 5: Prolouge, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, and Little Big Planet won't shake the industry? And I didn't even mention multiplatform titles that people know as a Playstation franchise like Devil May Cry 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4. This year is going to be a great year for all gamers, but PS3 is the console that gamers worldwide will want to buy. Sony is steadily catching up on a worldwide base, but it's just a matter of time till North Americans hop on too. I have, now it's only a matter of time.

Is the PlayStation 3 doing better than we think it is? I suppose you could argue the installbase now is just over 10million globally.

Sony should really be grateful to Europe. Yet we always get the short end of the stick as a thankyou.

The Killer5941d ago

1: sony dont want to screw europians or experiment on them like the other markets.
2: there is many languages and different rules in some countries also.

SeanScythe5941d ago

Home is on track for a Spring release!!!

DarkSniper5941d ago

It's not any surprising news to Dark Sniper to see PLAYSTATION® 3 selling 5 million consoles in less than one year in European territories. When you manufacture a technological powerhouse that includes all of the features that gamers want and need, it's easy to understand why XBOX 360 is nothing more than an afterthought in Europe.

Microsoft has placed themselves in a state of emergency due to the intelligence or lack thereof of their console manufacturers and designers. With XBOX 360's dying quicker than the rate of human deaths worldwide, consumers are becoming more aware of the failures by Microsoft.

Doesn't seem to be that bad of a month. Got a bit of something for everyone.

Please do not support braid anniversary edition. Don't support Phil phish, he's a very despicable person, a a cry baby.

One example

Tacoboto4h ago

Wrong developer. Phil Phish was the developer behind Fez.

Jonathan Blow was behind Braid. If you're gonna cancel culture, don't take down the wrong indie...

TimeShift - FPS Game Standing the Test of Time

TimeShift had a fairly muted launch in 2007, and while it doesn't rewrite the FPS rulebook it does offer an enjoyable campaign even now.

gurp15h ago

I played this on PC when it came out, it was actually good

Astrokis13h ago

Same! For its time I liked it a lot

PrinceOfAnger13h ago

It's a good game need a new one.

CantThinkOfAUsername12h ago

Never heard of this game until someone mentioned it here last year. Played it and it basically represents most games from the PS3/Xbox360 era—good graphics, amazing physics, and extremely fun gameplay (time powers rock), but barely any story, weird pacing, and at least one annoying AF level. I finished Prototype last week and the same applies, except Strike Teams. Fuck Strike Teams.

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell Of Ar Ciel Retro Review – Love Conquers All

Gary Green said: You’ll be forgiven if you haven’t heard of the Ar Tonelico trilogy. The previous two games arrived so late in the PS2’s life-cycle that they simply went unnoticed. While most were tinkering with their shiny new PS3s, Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia and Ar Tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica were being ‘returned to sender’ by your local Game stores. Luckily, you won’t need to have played them to understand and appreciate this third and final chapter, Qoga (pronounced k-yoga) tells the story of a racial war between humans and Reyvateils, a breed of biologically produced female cyborgs capable of reproduction, while still having a digital mind.

Oh my god. I kinda wish this would get a remaster on PS5, it would be awesome. One of my favorite games on PS3.

That and 3D Dot Game Heroes. It's a shame that some stuff is stuck on PS3.

Knightofelemia5d ago

Ar Tonelico 3 is good I still prefer the first AT game. The music is solid in all the games and Akiko Shikata is a very talented singer bringing life to the game. Only annoying part is well I find is Saki I always choose Finnel or Tyria. KOEI so needs to HD remaster the franchise along with Ar Nosurge and Ciel Nosurge since it never came to North America. I would day one the Ar Toneliceo games and Ar Nosurge if they were remastered.

TheColbertinator5d ago

I still have the limited edition of Qoga unopened. Unfortunately it never went up in value like I had hoped all these years.

Used to own all these quirky JRPG on ps3 good times. Wish I would have kept them all
