Call Of Duty 4 Becomes 3rd Game To Pass 2 Million On PS3

It is official that Call Of Duty 4 has become the third PLAYSTATION 3 game title to pass 2 million in sales, accelerating passed Assassins Creed in not-to-distant fourth place with just under 2 million in sales.

The games are very worthy of the sales, but still supprised that R&C has not done better and yet to hit the million mark.

This news post is a great example. It's made up news! Someone goes to the completely unreliable VGAChartz and then looks at the numbers and then suddenly makes it news. How many 360 news posts are "XXXX game has become the XX game to pass 2mil in sales". It's like trying to make up for some inadequacy(ie little d!ck syndrome).

There is usually one PS3 rumor debunk every day here, because PS3 fanboys work themselves up and start their FUD and then end up burning themselves. If that isn't pissing in the wind then I don't know what is.

It happens on both sides, but to say it's more 360 fanboys is misinformation.

What's really sad is Need For Speed Pro Street is so far ahead of Ratchet & Clank Future. R&CF is one of the best games of 2007 yet it's only around 750,000 so far. Shameful. Gamers need to get with it and stop this silly nonsense. Too many people act like a platformer is for kids. R&C isn't. They're great games. Maybe these people who think that should rent it and try it out.

PS3 also had UT3 and the Orange Box (which did bad). Don't say Uncharted was a flop as it's sold over a million in a couple months. Unlike most of the FUD you spread, the PS3's user base does buy games and not just BD movies.

Great news! I only wish that Sony exclusive titles sold as well. Like Uncharted! It just hit a million though. I was suprised that it has only sold a million to date. People go out and buy games, it makes developers want to develop games for your system(s).

Oh before someone says it, 2 million is impressive. It is true it is has sold double the amount on the 360 and that is truly astonishing, but it should not take anything away from the the 2 million for the PS3. Remember, number wise it should sale more on the 360 due to the larger install base. So no one should be bashing the PS3 for this, becuase if you compare the ratio install base number to units sold the ratio would be about the same. What is interesting is that this is the first time Sony has been in this predicament in not having the larger install base.

360 has a double-size install base. it is obvious that 360 is going to sell more with more systems sold, but this is a huge deal for the PS3. It is the 3rd game to reach this achievement AND is the first non-bundled game to reach this achievement. It has the same attachment rate as the 360!

That is just not true. There is plenty to sell, but admittedly it sold pretty damn well because they were bundled. This just shows that quality games sell really well on the PS3 and is a sign of what is to come with future AAA titles such as MGS4, Killzone 2, FFXIII, DMC4, Resistance 2, etc.

I'm actually kind of surprised the ps3 didn't sell more since they have limited choices. The 360 had lots of AAA titles that came out during the same time and still sold 4 million. So the 360 has roughly 32 games that hit the million sale mark while the ps3 has about 6. That's not even close. And of course Halo 3 currently still outsells every ps3 game.

The 360 is where the real money is.

last generation, at least for the Playstation 2, when a game would sell 500,000 units, it was inducted into the Playstation 2 Greatest Hits line of games.

nowadays, people think that if a game doesn't sell 17 million copies on day one, it's a failure.

i also think it's kind of funny that people think games will cost upwards of $20 million to develop *FOREVER.

you *DO know that, as experience with the platform increases, developers find ways to lower spending costs by cutting out unnecessary expenditures in the development process.

an asset that cost over $100,000 to produce at the start of the development cycle, probably costs *LESS than $30,000 another year or two *LATER.

man-hours (that need to be *PAID) pumped into finding out a solution to a developmental hurdle (ie, offloading AI, physics, lighting, etc to the Cell), are reduced as that same team gains experience in the matters, meaning less long hours, and less spending on the developers part to pay those employees.

sure, game publishers want their games to sell 1 million. hell, they want them to sell an infinite number if they could so they can make a sh*tload of money, but 500,000 units sold isn't disaster. not every game released on the 360 goes on to sell 1 million or more, the same way not every game on the PS3 will go on to sell 1 million.

as this generation progresses, publishers and developers will start making more profit, even if a game *DOESN'T get above 500,000. it's the initial *INVESTMENT in this new technology that is costing them so much now. once their game engines are in place, it's smooth sailing. it's one of the primary reasons why developers, and especially publishers want this gaming generation to last as long as possible, and why a lot of them are *STILL supporting the Playstation 2 (it doesn't cost *NEARLY as much as it did to produce a Playstation 2 title at the start of it's generation). the longer the console lifecycle, the longer the publisher and developer can iterate on it's *EXISTING game engine, instead of having to pour *MORE money into *R&D for a *NEW engine for the next round of consoles.

this constant jumping from console to console every few years is, honestly, *HURTING the gaming industry more than helping. sure, us gamers get to benefit from flashier graphics and physics, but just *LOOK at this current generation! for the most part, game developers are able to do practically *ANYTHING they want to. they are only limited by their imaginations (and pressure from publishers to produce games that the mainstream will spend millions on; kind of like Hollywood, really).

we have in game character models that give startlingly realistic performances, with depth and nuance (check out Heavenly Sword and Uncharted for evidence of this, to name only two). we have been taken to lush jungles, underwater Dystopias, and the far reaches of space (i'll let you guess which games i'm referring to), with detail and immersion that comes close to rivaling real life, and we are, realistically, only one and half years *INTO this new gaming era (i say 1 1/2 because, honestly, it wasn't until Gears of War released, *ONE YEAR AFTER the 360 launched that we *REALLY started to see the potential of this generation).

what's the rush to move onto the next consoles? we've barely scratched the surface here.

sure, PCs will always be reaching for the heavens, but come on, look at the cost to the user that is. to play Crysis the way it was *MEANT to be played, you need a monster of a PC. those things aren't cheap, even if you build the PC yourself, you're still spending more than what these current consoles cost.

so again, what's so bad if these consoles last 7 to 8 years? we get to benefit from games that constantly get optimized. developers and publishers benefit from being able to refine their gaming engines, and make a profit to, you know, *CONTINUE making video games, and we also get to benefit from not having to rush out and buy a new console *AGAIN, in 4 years or so. even the console *MANUFACTURERS (Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo), don't profit from constantly having to upgrade their hardware. they make money from software sales and licensing.

it's still early days, yet, and it's good to see PS3 games selling better, but seriously, is *THIS what gamers and gaming as a whole have become? tracking *SALES NUMBERS and console sales? man, i feel really, *REALLY old, because i remember, back when i was a boy, me and my buds used to argue endlessly about *GAMES.

and that's just comparing this generation with the *LAST. the original Playstation was also met with similar criticisms about price, attach rates, software quality, and the use of CDs a non-standard gaming format, when everything else was using cartridges (barring the Sega Saturn).

it was obvious to me (and my friends), that the Playstation 3's first 8 months on the market were going to be pretty bland. they *ALWAYS ARE. especially with Playstation consoles. usually, and most definitely, by that 10 month mark, there are, at *LEAST, 3 or 4 games on a Playstation console that are worth buying.

with the PS2, there was Zone of the Enders, Ico, GTA3, and Metal Gear Solid 2.

with the PS3, there was Resistance, Motorstorm, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, and Ratchet and Clank, followed up a month later with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Unreal Tournament 3.

the PS3 had more worthy games in it's first year than the PS2 did.

after that initial hump, the floodgates opened for the PS2, and more quality software was released, and the attach rate, and overall sales numbers of the Playstation 2 rose.

looking at this year, the Playstation 3's software lineup is looking *FANTASTIC, with a nice mix of classic franchises (Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII), and new IPs (Infamous, Little Big Planet, LA Noire, and Heavy Rain). so naturally, sales will improve.

even before all the titles started being shown off and announced last year, i knew this was coming. market trends are interesting to follow, in that they honestly do, rarely change. following the gaming industry for over 20+ years (i'm 28, and have been gaming since i was 6, in 1985), i've noticed a few things concerning console patterns.

so, yeah, certainly i saw the software expanding, and attachment rates improving, as well as overall system sales. me and my buddies would argue about it all the time, even during the complete and utter media *BLASTING Sony has received over the past few years. in truth, Sony's business plan hasn't changed one *BIT since the Playstation 1 launched. even the PSP followed a similar trend, and is doing remarkably well for a handheld that entered a market *DOMINATED by Nintendo for the greater part of 20+ years (*EVERYONE who tried to compete with the Game Boy failed. most handhelds never even got past 3 million units sold, barring the Game Gear. the PSP has sold roughly 25-30 *MILLION units).

the answer to your question is pretty straightforward:

game developers *LOVE to play with new toys.

looking at the original X Boxes capabilities, and looking at the Playstation 2 and even Gamecube's capabilities, it's easy to see why developers would absolutely *JUMP at the chance to get their hands on technology that, at the time, was on par, and even better, than most PCs available.

the things that a console like the 360 could do, back in 2005, was too tempting to pass up.

believe me, if the Playstation 3 had launched in 2005, and the 360 launched in 2006, developers would have hopped on the PS3 also, because it was out, and it was new technology to play with.

the developer's enthusiasm for the X Box 360, and gamers built in desire to have the newest toys asap, helped the 360 gain it's current lead over the Playstation 3.

looking at the software lineup of the 360 over the course of the past 24 months, i can't really name many games that are pushing the system. and i mean *EXCLUSIVE GAMES, not multi-platforms.

outside of Gears of War, Mass Effect, Bioshock, maybe Halo 3, and racing games like Forza and PGR (if you're a racing fan), in *TWO FULL YEARS, the 360 hasn't really pushed out enough "next gen" gaming.

*GOOD GAMES, yes. even *GREAT GAMES. but they are few and far between.

games like Lost Planet, Dead Rising, and Crackdown feel like the filler first generation titles that they are. they are fun, of course, but hardly pushing any envelopes. after two years on the market, this concerns me that people are still pointing to the same four games over and over again. and Microsoft isn't helping by keeping mum on so *MUCH. and i *HAVE a 360, and i'm concerned about what's coming outside of Fable 2, Too Human, and Alan Wake.

Sony is the complete opposite. they have shown us enough 2008 games to whet our appetites, and the first 12 months of the console's release gave us some *GREAT exclusives like Resistance, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Folklore, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, and Unreal Tournament 3. all of those games are fun, and they cover a nice range of genres.

on the multi-platform title front, however, i think both consoles are doing damn good. especially now that most 3rd party developers have gotten their acts together, and their heads around the PS3 processor. 3rd party multi-plats may never push the PS3 like it *COULD, but that's just something PS3 consumers will have to deal with. even 360 fans, as multi-plats require developers to split resources and teams in order to work on both versions of the game simultaneously.

people complained, rightfully, about early Playstation 3 multi-plats looking inferior to their 360 counterparts. for the most part, that was true, with a few exceptions (ie, Oblivion, and Fight Night). this is not really the case anymore, as games like Burnout Paradise and Devil May Cry 4 attest (i played DMC4 on my PS3 today, and those earlier stories with comparisons are *NOT TRUE. the PS3 version looks equal to the 360 version. don't believe a lot of the fanboy crap you hear).

another reason why the 360 got so much support, is because, well, it was *OUT. haven't you noticed that now that the PS3 is finally on the market, most games have had a 360 *AND PS3 version? developers can't develop for platforms that haven't seen release, and don't have dev kits for. now that that's sorted out, most, if not all high profile multi-platform titles are being developed, and released, for both consoles at the same time.

i don't think it was favoritism on developer's parts (well, except Valve and that douchebag, Gabe Newell), simply economics. the 360 was out first, they wanted their new toys, the next gen market was fresh and new, therefore enabling them to make a profit, and that's it, really.

Must admit that I still prefer GRAW2 for the online play at the moment, but maybe that's just because I am not used to COD4 totally yet ... but its still a great game to play
