Rumour :- Crysis might be coming to the PS3

Gamesradar reported way back in mid June,2007 that Crysis might be coming to the PS3. Apparently a new rumour has surfaced on Gamesradar claming that Crysis is indeed coming to PS3.

"Even before the PC version released, rumours of a PS3 conversion of the stunning Crysis (developed by Far Cry creators Crytek) were rife, and not far off the mark if insiders at the studio are to be believed. The game looks to be a port of the PC original plus some extra modes and features, a kind of Crysis 1.5. Like the PC game you can expect a visual powerhouse; an open-world shooter that begins on a beautiful tropical island before things take a turn for the worse and aliens from a parallel world stake a claim on Earth. Only the mighty Killzone 2 could possibly hold a candle to this shooter. For technical reasons we hear an Xbox 360 version of Crysis isn't in development. Bet you're glad you bought a PS3 now, eh? "

I think Alan Wake and Resistance 2 would look phenomenal too . I am not saying they would look as good as Crysis /killzone 2.

Alan Wake wont be as good looking as Crysis or Killzone 2. However both R2 and AW would look very good. I agree with Gamesradar on this . Killzone 2 will look as good as Crysis if not better.

If this is true, this will indeed be a MEGATON. This year, the PS3's releases are full of FPS. FPS have also been proven to sell very well.
This could be Sony's plan. I know Crytek have confirmed to be cooking up something special for PS3. This could be it.

EDIT: IF Alan Wake makes it out this year without no major frame rate issues and such, that will be a big achievement for the 360.

Yeah you are right, in terms of tech specs and sheer awesomeness on consoles, Killzone is the next greatest thing since Gears on X360.
Uncharted raised the bar alright but Killzone 2 is pushing even further.
If Killzone, Resistance 2 and the rumored Crysis drop this year, this will be massive.

Am sure Alan Wake exist, Remedy is a great games studio, if the game was still scheduled to be coming out for the PC, it would see a release this year but they are trying to have a simultaneous release for the the PC and 360 version.

The developers will probably not come out in the open and admit it, but am sure they are trying every way possible to get the game running on the Xbox 360.

If this game does come to any console - it won't be nearly as spectacular as the PC version. At least not visually. So don't believe the hype. The whole line about there being a hardware hurdle on the 360 is total bullshit. If there was a problem they would just tone the graphics down a little like they have to do on all PC to console ports.

I watched the video of Alan Wake,and I heard something of interest. The gentleman from Remedy makes numerous references to what they are doing with the multi-core processors. One thing that he mentions is that, "We're using the multiple cores here to prepare data for rendering for the GPU".

That sounds like the exact same technique that a lot of PS3 devs are using. I distinctly remember reading that, Naughty Dog, Insomniac and Guerrilla Games are doing this.

I'm not saying that 360 dev teams couldn't do something similar. I think that the PS3 is better suited to something like this with its numerous SPUs.

This is where I think the Cell processor's real power will really help make some really great games for the PS3. I know that many will disagree with me and I really don't care, but I think the cell processor will allow for a lot of potentially better games for the PS3.

The 360 still has a lot of life and has a lot of great games, but for the long haul, my money is on the PS3.

I only hope that the devs can and will tap the power that is available to them with the cell.

You are right if it would be just about the graphics. However, if I’m not mistaken there’s also a very complex physics model used in Crysis. I can imagine that that would be too much for the 360’s processor while the Cell might be able to tackle it.

But for now, this is just a rumour, so I wouldn’t LOL yet PS3 fanboys… ;)

lack of Standard HDD. MS refuses to let devs create a game that needs a HDD to run. 360 devs have to make a game for both the HDD sku and non-HDD sku. You gotta believe that a game like Crysis uses HDD caching throughout the entire game and not having that option is asking for to much from the DVD drive.

Since crisis has large maps it uses data streaming which means streaming data directly from the HDD after partial /full installation .

i dunno, ps3 is pretty powerfull, i think they could do really good job of it and we might see something very close to the pc version, (gotta take into account the fact that the game will most likely run in 1080p aswell so of course it might have to toned down a little). but again this will be a port from a pc game, we all know that pc game archetecture is slightly differant from ps3 which is why we have seen some badly done ports.

Let's hope crytek put some reall effort into porting this well!! looking forward to the announcement!

I think the inability to use a hard drive for a possible 360 port is a reason why it won't come, but do you think that's really the only reason? I personally don't think the 360 itself could handle a game as deep as Crysis, and even if it could, it wouldn't be able to fit on a dvd. I know the PC version is on a dvd, but pc's are way more powerful if you have a good one then a console. Don't expect a port for 360 is what I would say.

even for call of duty 4 to maintain a solid 60 fps, a few pixels had to be sacrificed and resolution had to be brought down to 600p, however the same call of duty 4 can run 1920x1080 with 60-100 fps with slightly better textures on a year old pc, ppl say specs of consoles don't matter as the games are made because the game can be optimized, but optimization is a very loose term, it's more like sacrifice, look at halo 3, u can't make such sacrifices on pc because they are unacceptable, ppl argue about games looking good on ps3 and 360 and easily forget the fact that u're playing on a tv/hdtv sitting 6-10ft away from the screen, tvs/hdtvs tend to interlace/upscale to hide ugly details, pc gamers however are less than to 3ft close to the screen so they see all the details that is why pc games have to look better, it is an obligation especially with texture quality, try getting closer to ur hdtv, tv and see how jaggy/unpretty some of ur games will look, ps3 and 360 are beasts of gaming consoles, very powerful and ps3 clearly having the edge with the cell but they are not gods u know, if even call of duty 4 had to sacrifice something, how much more crysis? Actually, it won't be a tough decision because even on medium settings, crysis looks awesome on an hdtv at 720p so maybe they can manage a mix of high and medium with a few very high, with that being said, that thing about crysis not being able to be maxed out is total BS, crysis look orgasmic with all very high at 720p with 2xAA on my 52" 1080p Bravia, it's even hard to concentrate and play the game sometimes, i play it with tweaked very high through dx9 and manage a solid 37 fps on my htpc Q6600, 2gb RAM, 8800gtx which cost me $1200

after reading articles about the power of SPU's on the CELL being unlocked allowing more code to be shifted to them i seriously doubt crytek cant find a way to port crysis to at least the ps3- maybe even the 360

Hell Insomniac are using the SPUs to do most of the work, and the stuff they're planning for R2 is just so awesome. That said, if this is true and it's done right it could be huge. But then no one could say anything about the 360 being the FPS system (shooter system yes) because the PS3 is getting its fair share.

If true, this would be a bit of a blow for the 360, as it suggests the game won't be ported due to technical limitations. I'll be intrigued to see if this rumour lasts more than a few days or so. I can imagine Microsoft would be keen to ensure games with the hype of Crysis make it to their system as well.

Whatever the case, I'm not a huge FPS fan, and I hear the story isn't so good, so unless the superb graphics make it through the porting intact -- and what other reason would I buy Crysis for? -- I'll probably give it a miss.

Crytek and EA have both stated numerous times that Crysis, the game, will remain exclusive to the PC...however the franchise may be chunked up and sent everywhere...just like Far Cry...

the only hopefull thing from Crytek has been categorizing the rumor of optimizing the engine for consoles under "likely"...combine that with numerous job posting for PS3 experienced programmers...and optimizing the engine for the consoles seems very likely...

but again...Crysis, the actual game, will most likely never come to consoles...there will be spin off this and renamed that...but they will be different, and possibly not evne handled by Crytek...

PC requirements and console requirements are not same eg Assasins Creed's recommended settings include a quad core processor and 8800gt.

On pc lot of other processes run alongside the gaming processes so PC requirements are always higher

Actually, I've read in numerous interviews, straight from Crytek's mouth, that console versions were not being worked on, but that it could change, depending on how well Crysis is received and sells on the PC. All of the interviews were consistent in Crytek saying, "We are not working on Crysis for consoles at this time," with the emphasis on "at this time." I could post the URLs if anyone cares.

Oh its also worth a buy purely for the engine/SDK they give you, you can do some really fun stuff on that, ive spent hours just playing with physics (maybe plus a few hefty explosions).

im hearing this a lot- crysis isn't just eye-candy, its also a pretty solid FPS

i played it at my friends house where he could only run it at medium- and at those settings you can appreciate the gameplay as well as the graphics

and i have to say that its a pretty cool shooter- the nanotech stuff is cool as is the AI and the whole alien twist

don't write crysis off as just a lame, but pretty shooter- its pretty good actually

Crysis is far and away the most advanced game out there. People who compare any current game to it visually either are console n00bs in denial or just plain stupid.

Its gameplay is fantastic, ok, multiplayer was pretty weak, but thats easily changed, and it ships with the engine, which offers hours of fun.

All in all, its the best FPS going (CoD wins multiplayer). Only the insane system requirements hurt it. Honestly, if this is true and the manage to achieve this game on a console ill be amazed, im sure they'd have to gimp it one way or another.

This is cool and all, and I see alot of you are excited.

For the sake of discussion and inputting my opinion, I wish to clarify that I'm not raining on the parade here or crapping over anyone's exciting.

Another FPS? As if Haze, Unreal 3, Orange Box, Call of Duty 4, Timeshift, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and whatever else is coming isn't enough? It just feels saturated now. I've already chosen Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 to be my next choice of shooters.

If you are an FPS fan, I don't know what the hell you're doing NOT owning a PS3, and it's great for people like me who are just OK on the genre since Killzone 2 looks to be more immersive and cinematic which is something I find exciting and enticing. Not to mention the fact that Sony's 20-or so first party developers are working on gametypes of other genres, there is literally nothing missing.

Feel free to disagree with me, I don't wish to start any arguments, however, I'm curious to know if any other gamers feel similar to the way I do. I'd love to know what most of you think.

The FPS market on PS3 is thickening up fast, but as I'm not a huge fan of the genre, I just cherry-pick the best. Much like you, Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 are likely to do for me in the coming months. It would take something pretty special from Crysis to get me to buy that as well, and given that the story isn't said to be that great, I'll probably pass on it.

That said, if the graphics are ported well, and are as stunning as I know Crysis can be, I may buy it just for that. I'm a sucker for good graphics.

I agree with you. That's why I've got a PS3, I just now Sony will deliver in all genres. GT5 for racing, Killzone 2/Resistance and Haze (ok 3rd party but it's coming to PS3 first) for shooters, Uncharted/MGS4 for action adventures and LittleBigPlanet looks like it's going to be special.

They may have lost GTAIV and DMC4 but their spiritual homes will be the PS.

I think the PS3 is doing it out of necessity though... It doesn't have Halo, so there are 4 or more other games that satisy the FPS hunger.

It does seem like the PS3 has just about everything covered this year. Most exclusives look VERY strong and tower over the 360s offerings, i.e MGS4 is much better than the same old same old Splinter Cell,

Little Big Planet, 360 has nothing
Final Fantasy and versus, much better than lost Odyssee

This is what went through my mind as I read the article. Should it prove to be true, I'll be asking around, I don't have contacts in the Electronic Arts studio's that are currently making this game. I digress, what does it do so differently and so special that would cause a fan of first person shooters to select this game over another considering that money is always the barrier. Sure if someone can buy every game possible, who cares about this, but the fact remains, these shooters are all competing for the restricted dollar.

I wish to imply the point in the context of the circumstance that these games will end up hurting each other, and dividing the userbase of shooter fans (Whereas the community for just one can be large, as opposed to the same number being split up across many games) or it can cause a congregation of players to the PS3 since it has such a selection now.

Any comments on that? Do you think I'm right or wrong on both aspects? This is an open question to any readers.

You make a very fair point. Now that the Halo series is ending, first person shooter fans will want a fix to the eventual draught of shooters that will appear on the 360. That is not to say that games like Ninja Gaiden 2 and Alan Wake won't be anything short of spectacular, but Sony broadening their video game catalogue with shooters can also be detrimental as stated in the above post addressed to Hapimesis.

It can hurt the console by dividing the respective communities, or rather, it can make the PS3 the attractive choice when it comes to shooters now.

Bottom line is, it can't hurt Sony... Maybe the companies that are putting them out, but at the end of the day, it can only sell more PS3s.

Since the US is the only country with Millions who love to play FPSs, it could get them to buy into a PS3.

I think that's Sony's line of thinking. Let those people who love Halo and COD4 look on the other side and see a number of games that may not be better, but there are just so many and so much more variety, it'll have them buying a PS3 to give them something else to play.

I hope 2008 offers more games of broader genres than FPS. COD4, Orange Box, Unreal are great games but in the long run it's pretty repetitive. I got 2 FPS, a TPS (Uncharted), and Assasin's Creed for Christmas and I think I've played Assassin's Creed more than any
others, although I beat COD4 first.

In the long run, Crysis will probably boost PS3 sales a bit. If you look at how poorly the game sold for PC, it would only make sense for them to port it. It'd be cool if it were PC/PS3 exclusive to help the PS3 but I can't see EA not making a 360 version as well.

There is never enough. The more the merrier. The trick is to have variations to cater for different tastes.I can only see a problem if the majority of games develop become FPS. Having alot of choices is always a good thing.

In reply to your point about saturating the market and splitting the FPS user-base: In essence, I agree, and it may hurt sales of each individual game; after all, the PS3 user base is still relatively small. However, as far as Sony is concerned, it is nothing more than a good thing, as each new game may drag a new gamer to the PS3 for the first time, increasing market penetration.

Further, as the saturation of FPS games attracts new gamers attracted to FPS games, these new gamers will buy more games -- very possibly more FPS games. This, I feel, may be seen if the sales of such games continue at a steady pace without too much flagging. In short, by making more quality FPS games available, and inducting players who like these games in PS3-hood, more FPS games will sell as a result on PS3. In effect, in the long-term they will feed upon each other's successes, perhaps balancing the damaged sales in the short term.

Gamers have proven before...and as a matter of fact as recently as this past year that if there are several games worth owning(which is debatable, but for arguments sake), then they will own them. Halo 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect, CoD4, and The Orange Box have all been runaway hits on the 360, among others. Let's please keep fanboy crap and attach rate wars out of this...once again I say this for arguments sake.

For another thing, this only serves to bolster the HW sell through of the console because the lineup will be more appealing to a particular crowd. Gamers who were or are still on the fence can rest easy, because the games are coming. Such would be the case if Crysis, Killzone, and Resistance 2 became a sort of FPS triple crown for the console. It would be very difficult indeed to resist, and all would(presumably) be exclusives also.

So basically, my point is that gamers will buy good games(K2, R2, and Crysis), and good games will attract MORE gamers to buy MORE good games(HW sells through the roof, and so do said games).

Crysis can only help matters for everyone. It's like the Blu-Ray trojan horse. It's a deal breaker for a lot of people, and those that bought it for the entertainment value may very well go ahead and buy some games. Same with the Crysis crowd. Those whose tastes generally appeal to Crysis, Resistance, or Killzone more prominently may very well indulge in the other games simply because they CAN.

Think of these games as gateway drugs :)

i like FPSes, but i don't *LOVE them, and i'm a bit burned out on them. to the point where even a solid FPS like Call of Duty 4 gets a "meh" from me. if, say, Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock were the *ONLY FPS games released last year, i would have been in 7th heaven. but the market is becoming over-saturated. i played the Turok demo yesterday, and i also came away with a "meh," and i fricking *LOVE Dinosaurs (how can anyone not, really?)!

my preferred genres are action/adventure and rpgs, something Sony has *ALWAYS excelled at since the PS1 days. it's the reason why i bought a Playstation 3 first. last year had a nice covering of the genres, with at least one solid title in all genres, and this year is looking even *BETTER.

my two FPSes for this year are also Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 (i know the Haze people are probably crying now, as those two games have stolen it's thunder, *BADLY), and i'll probably pick up Haze, since it comes out first, and Free Radical is a very good developer (i haven't been disappointed in their games so far). but after that. i'm pretty cooled on FPS games. my plate will be full from the genres i actually really *LOVE instead.

as for Crysis, i watched a bunch of gameplay videos, and honestly, the game seems kind of "meh" to me too. i love the tech of the game, and it's nice seeing the amount of sheer detail packed into the title, and i'm incredibly impressed by it, but i can't help but think, "god, *ANOTHER FPS? really?" if it had an option for 3rd person, i'd be more interested.

of course, if this rumor turns out to be true, and Crysis does hit the PS3, and thanks to the 6 SPUs in the Cell, manages to come close to the PC version, i may give it a try; i admit, i'm a graphics whore at heart, if anything just to spite the PC owners who never shut up about how Crysis "pwns" every console game out there (yeah, enjoy that *ONE FPS that maximizes your $1500 gaming rig; i'll just enjoy Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Unreal Tournament 3, Infamous, FFXIII, MGS4, DMC4, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, and Resistance 2 on the $600 Playstation 3 i bought in February 2007. i *LOVE that i don't have to upgrade my entire console just to play *ONE cutting edge game. my wallet thanks me for it; it's the reason why i got out of PC gaming, actually. that, and, well, getting engaged tends to come with a refocusing of priorities).

i wish more western developers would branch out and do games like Indigo Prophecy, Alan Wake, Heavy Rain, etc, and more RPGs and action/adventure games.

with the current market obsession with FPS, it's going to start to lose it's luster, even amongst the hardcore FPS fans, because there are only so many online FPS shooters you can maintain at a time (hell, i'm having a hard time balancing Resistance and Warhawk; Warhawk wins 99% of the time; i just love dem dog fights!), and when yet *ANOTHER FPS is announced, developers shouldn't be surprised when they're greeted with more "mehs," than, "OMFG! ANOTHER FPS!!!"

i don't think FPS games should go away, of course, but i do think that FPS games should be limited to about two to three a year, and those games need to either be really, *REALLY fun, or pushing the envelope in some way.

Hmm - this could well explain why the developer has an entire team dedicated to PS3 technolgy beavering away on a PS3 engine. I had assumed it was going to be a new IP, but they have the technology, why not export crysis and recoup some of the developement money - it hasn't sold well on PC (not much does any more).

I am totally sure ps3 can handle this game; My Pc is P4 3000Mhz HT + 1 GB ram + 8600gt run it on windows xp on medium setting with a very smooth picture on whole the game... and as they mention above medium have a very good Graphics in this game...I am sure this game at least could run on hight setting quality on ps3...Remember that GameSpot prove that Directx 9 (Feature Supported in PS3) Can handle this game in very hight setting with nearly the same quality DirectX 10 provide to us...

Personally I'm not interested in this game. I played the demo on my PC and wasn't really impressed with the core gameplay; it's main appealing facet is just the visual and aside from that, its really an average FPS. With a market that will be saturated with them again this year, I don't really see a reason for the excitement for Crysis other than being able to use its potential porting to the platform, as an Ace card for debates. Basically, bragging rights.

But the more games, the better, especially if they're well known in the community. It'd make the platform more appealing.

I can't believe that some people think that a hypothetical PS3 version of Crysis could look as good as Crysis on a high end PC. The PS3 has an NVIDIA 7800 graphics card. Throughout the history of consoles, it has been shown that you cannot directly compare technical specs between a console and a PC. They're intrinsically different platforms and developmental environments. For instance, you get a hell of a lot more out of 512mb of ram on a console than you would on a PC. Same can be said about the videocard make and model.

Case in point, is how well Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and DOOM 3 ran on the original Xbox 1, which was basically a 733mhz Intel with 64mb of total RAM!

The PS3 could not run Crysis at the level of graphical fidelity and quality that the Xbox 360 could. Crysis is a game that needs true next generation hardware not an inferior poorly designed platform with a garbage CELL processor and an embarrassing amount of RAM available to the GPU, a mere 256mb.

The PS3 is incapable of running Half-Life 2 or any Xbox 360 shooter at the same level of graphical prowess that the Xbox 360 and a PC is capable of, any Crysis game would only share one similarity with the original and that's the name, kind of like the Metal Gear Solid port for Game Boy or the PS2 port of Splinter Cell, which were both garbage and a shadow of their original inspirations.

The reason FEAR and Orange Box had problems on the PS3 is because developers don't know how, or are to lazy to, correctly program for the cell, not because the PS3 isn't capable of running those ancient games. even for call of duty 4 to maintain a solid 60 fps, a few pixels had to be sacrificed and resolution had to be brought down to 600p, however the same call of duty 4 can run 1920x1080 with 60-100 fps with slightly better textures on a year old pc, ppl say specs of consoles don't matter as the games are made because the game can be optimized, but optimization is a very loose term, it's more like sacrifice, look at halo 3, u can't make such sacrifices on pc because they are unacceptable, ppl argue about games looking good on ps3 and 360 and easily forget the fact that u're playing on a tv/hdtv sitting 6-10ft away from the screen, tvs/hdtvs tend to interlace/upscale to hide ugly details, pc gamers however are less than to 3ft close to the screen so they see all the details that is why pc games have to look better, it is an obligation especially with texture quality, try getting closer to ur hdtv, tv and see how jaggy/unpretty some of ur games will look, ps3 and 360 are beasts of gaming consoles, very powerful and ps3 clearly having the edge with the cell but they are not gods u know, if even call of duty 4 had to sacrifice something, how much more crysis? Isn't this old news? I mean, I read on Joystiq last year that Crytek were posting up job announcements, looking for PS3 programmers or something like that. This could be what they're working on. If these rumors are true, then it is indeed due to the fact that ps3 has the most powerful cpu of all, including pc's, depending of course, how its used.

For physics, nothing touches cell, that physix card for pc's gets pwned.

A hd is a major plus, with texture streaming of course ram and with blu-ray size isn't really going to be a problem.

SO all in all, if its coming to a console. It will most probably only come to ps3.

we all know the ps3 is one beast of a machine and more powerfull then the 360 in most areas. the problem is to get that extra power you need to be ether be a sony owned developer or just be a really good dev.

I think crytech could get the game running on ps3 and with there history of only porting games to the most powerfull system (farcry on xbox) it could happen.

maybe with the extra prosessing power of the ps3 and the hard-drive it could work.

BUT i cant see EA letting crytech release a game only on ps3 and not have a 360 version

Rumours Rumours Rumours= Not always true, and on a side note to say that the 360 has better graphics then the ps3 shows how much denial you are in. Not saying that the ps3 is better then xbox or the other way around though.

It takes a 2.8 Dual Core processor, 3 gigs of RAM, and an Overclocked 512mb 8800 GT to run Crysis at High Settings a little above 720p on my PC. It's going to take some serious optimization and probably some sacrifices to get it on the PS3.

It's one of the most epic stories I've ever encountered!
Sure it doesn't have any intense dialogues or twists but the whole thing as an idea is HUGE! So the STORY is good but the plot isn't.
Have you even played Halo 1 or do you get that the story refers to the bible in a cool way?(I'm not religious BTW)
