Can Gran Turismo 5 outsell Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec?

Expectations for Polyphony's Gran Turismo 5 for the PlayStation 3 are steadily increasing. Sony is still claiming that the series is THE best racing simulator (that will be) on the market. Can Gran Turismo 5 sell more copies than the best-selling Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec did?

fan since DAY ONE. We can gripe about delays all day about some things, but ((all)) fans of pure & true racing bliss wait for *perfection when it come to GT.

Agreed Madden Raiders.

Hardcore GT Fans know that it's worth waiting for. Even GT4 which seemed like it took a decade to come out, was the best racing sim on PS2.

GT5 will do it again.

Sony just needs to drop the price to $299, so nobody has an excuse of "The PS3 is too expensive, even for GT5"

Gran Turismo 4 was one of the best titles in the series and my personal favourite out of the series and that's saying a lot. The Mercedes-Benz challenge at Nurburgring (full) still haunts me to this day.

The Gran Turismo series (along with Cruisin' U.S.A...and that game was awesome) got me into driving sims.

I cannot wait for GT5 because I have Prologue and it is SEXY.

I hope they include damage in GT5.

I didn't say that Cruisin' U.S.A was a sim.

I said that, along with the Gran Turismo series is what got me into driving games.

And Knight, please tell your group that unless they can challenge my comments, then they need to cease and desist with the disagree button because it makes them look foolish!

I agree with you Juuken. It was the GT series that also got me into the driving games - i didn't use the term driving "sim" games as back then it was the only "sim" game i was aware of on a console and the best IMHO on the console market at the time. However the GT series have not changed in the last 5 games and thus are no longer considered a true "sim" when compared to games like Forza 1 & 2.

GT is still an awesome game there is no doubt about it - however the only innovation (and i use the term lightly) is the great use of light effects and reflections (since creating great polished cars isn't really innovative).

Because of this lack of innovation and bringing the series up to the next level is why reviewers are becoming a little bit more harsh when reviewing the game - they are getting tired of the same game over and over - just looking better and better.

I have replied and "challenged" to your comments in the past and as usual you come back with nothing. Just juvenile verbal attacks with nothing that adds to the article or conversation. I pick my battle with people that can actually think and give me a good argument. Your debating skills is as good as Nasim.

I'm not so sure if GT5 can outsell GT3, but I do think that it can sell about just as much as GT4 did.

I really hope that GT5 comes out in 2009 and it's really one of the only racing games I'm looking forward too.

I'm really affraid that it just might not come out this year though. From what I've been hearing, PP are not just adding damage to the cars but rather than just have that as an asthetic, are implementing sim damage modeling which will mean there won't be damage for damage sake but the damage will affect the cars as they would in real life.

Now this is a tricky thing cause you don't want to have gameplay burdened by this (seeing as this IS a video game after all) but also have to make it reasonable believable.

You now PP, they're known rabid perfectionist when in comes to cars and they just won't bring this out 'till it's DONE! I'd imagine sim damage modeling for Online competition, the way they're tryin to implement this and many other things, would be a daunting task.

This is one game I really don't care about waiting years for cause GT ALWAYS delivers in spades.

I think that should say GT is the best driving Sim, not racing. There are better racing games in my opinion, but no better driving games. Plus they dont call it the real racing simulator.

GT 5 will be ridiculous.
The prologue is so good, even with its limitations, is better than many full games.
I dont see any reason why 70-85% of PS3 owners wold not buy this game.

This.

I've recently, in the past few days, got back into it because of the drifting challenges. I mean, I've probably done the Eiger Nordward drift track over 40 times today alone in varying cars trying to perfect the drift.

It's shallow for a Gran Turismo game, but it's also not a full title. Hope they have dirt tracks with drift challenges in the full game.

Gran Turismo sells tons in Europe, always has, this edition will be no different.

Grand Turismo will sell 19 million copies!
from these stats gt4 prologue sold 1.36m and gt4 sold 9.62m copies!
gt5 prologue sold 2.8m, gt5 will undoubtedly sell about double
gt5 19m verses Forza 2 4.34m

If GT were to release now it would easily sell 5+ million. If it comes out early 2010 or late 2009 then I see it pulling off Halo 3 sales.

12 - the short answer is....
absolutely not. Im not trying to bash gran turismo 5, but Gran turismo 3 aspec sold 15 million copies. That means that inorder for the Gran turismo 5 to sell more, over 3/4 of every ps3 owner would have to buy it. there are only 20 million ps3 owners out their and there not all racing fans, so it's pretty much impossible. With that said it should sell well, just not that well.

What you're not factoring, is that people who don't have a PS3 WILL BUY ONE to play GT5.

I say just as long as the price drop rumors are true, and the PS3 is $299 then GT5 could potentially move tons of hardware especially in Europe.

Gran Turismo 3 was the peak of the franchise. The game took many hours of my life. In fact probably the second most played game in my life behind Halo 2. I love cars and being a major gearhead, I found a new love with the Forza franchise. In fact the first Forza was the reason why i switched from ps2 to Xbox. You can disagree all you want but Forza is the most realistic driver on the console market.

Forza is an excellent game. Forza 2 was an even better game.

But none match the quality and polish of a GT game. Disagree all you want, but that's the fact.

And GT5 will be no different.

Plain and simple GT has very limited tweaks and performance enhancements. Forza 2 has an enormous amount of parts that you can buy and tweak. Like I said I'm a gearhead and this was just butter on my popcorn!

Quality and polish? LMAO. What the hell does that mean? Yeah GT has some superb looking mountains but Forza has the better gameplay. You can't argue that fact.

Gran Turismo has all that, customisable parts, performance tweaks and, since GT5P, on the fly tweaks while racing, very in depth, at least as in depth as Forza. The only thing is does lack is actual decal customisation.

Actualy GT series including so far GT5 is nothing close to a sim as forza 2 is. Forza you can actualy blow your tranny. If certain parts on your car is damaged it will have an impact at how well your cars handles on the road. In the GT series there is no damage - not even scratches. If you don't take damage then your car will always perform at its peak regardless of what you hit - or if you keep your RPM's over reved in the red for a long period of time.

Forza2 is by far a more Realistic Sim that GT will ever be. All you sony faithfuls by all means tell me how is GT5 more of a sim than Forza - what does the GT series do that the Forza series doesn't (other than have better polished looking cars). I have already told you what GT5 (as far as we know so far) doesn't have compared to Forza2 now tell me what GT5 has that Forza 2 doesn't.

Not to mention the PLETHORA of customizing the parts and tuning of each part...(including the air pressure in the tires and angles of the tires) and total customization of the transmission - depending on which transmission you purchase and install in the car...there is just so much in Forza2.

13.6 - Forza 2 is kinda of....
an arcade racer with a lot of shiny lights and noises. the cars feel weird, like to much "rumbling". i have both, and i noticed that in GT5 when you change cars, you REALLY change cars. The feeling (for lack of a better word) is superb. compare a Ferrari 450 with an Honda NSX. TOTALLY different experience. the sound is awesome, the handling is so representative of the cars, the attention to detail (polish) is amazing.
Forza is fun, no doubt, but it cant escape the arcade feeling.
broom broom! + customize
damage is okay, if you dont mind then is whatever, but i would like to see it on GT 5

14 - I expect
I expect it to sell really well. By the time its out there will be an larger install base. No doubt it will also be in a bundle pack as well.
I have a feeling its not going to have any damage though. Hopefully they at least include cosmetic damage that will affect the cars aero's.

15 - I think it will sell better
because if you notice the trend, in each new playstation console, the debuting Gran Tourismo game sells a little better than the next one in addition to the games in the last console, in the case of GT 3 and 1. So, therefore, Gran Tourismo 5 should sell not only better than Gran Tourismo 3, but better than GT 6, when that comes out. So there's a strong chance for GT5

Honestly I'd rather have better drifting with more smoke like it really is along with more aesthetic customization options rather then damage. I mean lets be honest with the graphics GT5 brings along with the amount of cars. Damage models for every car would just add so much work not to mention issues with certain companies who don't want damage. An when it comes to the GT series you guys that want damage are gonna be looking for Burnout Paradise level of detail or more in a game with 700 to 1000+ cars, that's a tall order an if that's the case you haven't seen delays yet.

with GT5P. The london track specifically. It felt like a arcade game not a simulation. And the driving felt all wrong on all the tracks. How can you drive around a corner at 50-60 kph and understeer. It just felt wrong and I hope they fix it.

Selling points:

a. damage mode
b. a lot of cars ( hope some of these cars would be included in the game - Mazda Furai, Bugatti Veyron, Alfa 8C and some classics like maybe a Porsche 928, Audi Quattro Group B Rallyecar )
c. a lot of tracks ( dirt, gravel, snow included )
d. weather effects ( still to be confirmed )

... will definitely sell this game whether you're into sim or arcade type of gamer driver/racer.

No more questioning about how good it looks because it is the benchmark.
