PS3 and Xbox 360 to perform poorly this holiday

As the busy holiday season creeps upon us, PS3 and Xbox 360 manufacturers, Sony and Microsoft are anticipating massive sales. However, according to industry experts video game sales may suffer from the downturn in the economy. Also software developers may be releasing fewer AAA titles in an effort to offset financial woes in the near future.

According to GI.biz, Strauss Zelnick, Chairman for Take Two Interactive, indicated that the entertainment industry is not immune to recession. This is in contrast to what other industry analysts have predicted. Historically, the entertainment industry has fared quite well during periods of recession, mainly due to an increase in consumer spending on home entertainment.

Zelnick says that the current state of the industry "doesn't look very promising." While speaking at a conference, Zelnick indicated that the company is starting to see software sales drop at retail locations.

He said:

"In the last couple of weeks specifically we're beginning to see some softness in retail, it's pretty broad and it's beginning to have an impact on the industry and by that I don't mean a good impact."

Zelnick also indicated that the company will reduce development of AAA titles in order to offset high overhead costs. This strategy will also help software titles break even quickly.

He said:

"In that context we think our strategy, which is to release a limited number of top tier titles, somewhat cushions us in the environment because must have products should still sell … your overhead should be lower, your marketing costs should be lower…"

However, it is difficult to say if this strategy is even feasible. Reducing top tier titles means that there will be fewer games on the market that might be worth buying. Such a move could impact hardcore gamers who crave AAA titles throughout the year. We will just have to wait and see if Take Two Interactive's strategy pays off in the end.

I agree with you but the problem I see is too much content for our less money! XD

We had a period from summer end to Autumn where 1 or 2 games or AAA titles were worth of buying, now, suddenly a lot a games get released and our pockets cant take it all at once. This Xmas will sell games but it wont sell trucks loads off all of them. Maybe CoD WaW will top everything since its a sure bet and long term game U know you´ll be playing for a long time (till the next one comes out). In this recession we tend to invest in game that we know it will give us value for our money.

Being able to buy two Xbox 360's for the price of one PS3 is really going to hurt the PS3's sales this holiday season, I believe.

Microsoft picked the perfect time to cut prices.

http://www.gamecyte.com/oct...

"Though more than one CEO has cited an October retail slowdown in recent investor conference calls, such a slowdown happily does not seem to have afflicted the U.S. video game industry sales as a whole. Today, the NPD reports that game industry sales actually increased 18% year-over-year to $1.31 billion."

I dunno... looks ok to me. And it seems like 'experts' have about a 90% failure rate when it comes to predictions.

5 - Retailers' weak results, outlooks ominous signs for holiday shopping season
The ongoing economic crisis, which has been dubbed as the worst since the Great Depression, has wreak havoc on retailers, as it has forced consumers to sharply cut back on their spending. A shaky job market and a prolonged housing slump have added to the gloom.

If the results and warnings from retailers were not enough, a report released Friday showed that retail sales plunged by the largest amount on record in October, an ominous sign for the holiday season ahead.

On Friday, department store chain J.C. Penney Co., Inc. (JCP: News ) reported a 52% drop in its third quarter profit, forecast fourth quarter earnings below analysts' expectations and predicted that the challenging retail conditions will last well into 2009. J.C. Penney said it expects same-store sales to fall 9% to 11% in the fourth quarter.

Teen apparel retailer Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF: News ) said Friday that its third quarter profit fell 46% from last year, hurt by weak demand for its girls' tops and the overall consumer spending slowdown. The company forecast fourth quarter earnings below analysts' expectations and slashed its earnings outlook for the full year 2008. The company expects same-store sales to drop 26% in the fourth quarter.

Earlier this week, electronics retailer Best Buy Co (BBY: News ) cut its full-year forecast, citing "seismic changes" in consumer behavior.

Amid the global financial crisis, shoppers have curbed their spending on buying TVs and other discretionary items to focus on necessities, as rising unemployment and tight credit dents their purchasing power.

Nah, if these companies boast the bargon consumers will get they'll(MSFT/Sony?) be fine, of course they're really going to have to show a great deal which only one of the two companies have the cheapest console on the market(or will).

The Gaming Market is a different animal, for all we know consoles(the cheapest ones) will be whole family solutions when it comes to gifts.

I agree, Christmas is the one time of the year that won't be hit by recession, we're all far too happy to spend money.

360 and PS3 will be fine, maybe not as good as last year, but I see no reason why both won't have a good selling season.

7.3 - U.S. Retail Sales Suffer Worst Monthly Drop On Record
October's decline is the worst since the Commerce Department adopted the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) standard to measure retail sales in 1992.

It marked the fourth consecutive decline in monthly retail sales.

"This would suggest that we are in a recessionary cycle," said Hoyt. "Businesses will start to invest less in their business and hire fewer people. This will again hit consumers. Round and round we go."

Putting sales figures aside I can't really understand how you reason when you say all eyes on Fable 2 and Gears 2. Over 30% of people that have played them says that they are a let down. Still great! but a let down.

Under 10% of people that have played LBP, Killzone 2 beta, MGS4 says that they were a let down. R2 could be around 20-30%.

So if people aren't happy about what they are getting then why should they keep thier eyes on it?

Christmas isn't recession proof, it's just been bolstered in the past via the accumulation of massive amounts of unmanageable consumer debt. Retailers already know consumers won't be charging their way through this Christmas which is why layaway is back:

reduce good game for mediocre game eh? what the hell? developer now on the black list.

on another note, is the CEO of costco the ONLY CEO out there who settled for his 350k/year income? other company needs to get less greedy and share with the consumers just like costco's. Most of these big players have more than enough money to spend for 10 generations +.

Zelnick is referring to November sales being down which doesn't surprise me given that Best Buy was projecting a 15 percent drop in November sales. Not sure what kind of shape the economy will be in come Christmas, but with the acceleration of layoffs we could easily be looking at double-digit unemployment rates long before Thanksgiving leftovers are cleared from our refrigerators.

I know there have been a half dozen or so games released in the last two weeks that I would have normally picked up, but the current economic climate has me passing on anything with a $50 or $60 price tag that I see being marked down to $20 or $30 by Christmas.

Nothing is recession-proof. Sales will not be the same as what they would have been if the economy were better. People are not going to be spending as much this year because there are fewer people with jobs and credit is more expensive and harder to get. That doesn't mean that things are going to be catastrophic, but if I have to choose between a PS3 and paying rent, I'm going to pay rent. More people have to make that choice this year.

I kinda doubt that. I'm sure the x360 will do really well because of it's price.

The PS3 will probably do alright. It's still rather expensive, but it will still do okay.
