PlayStation 2 Grows Stronger by the Day?

spong.com writes: "India, it's a huge potential market for video games. We've already reported this week how Sony's country manager, Atindriya Bose, does simple and straightforward business.

Mr Bose also pointed out that, in terms of the PS2, "Activision have transferred all their assets here".

Well, it seems that whatever the PS3 is doing in the rest of the world, the PlayStation 2 is firmly on course to make the most of sub-continent's keen gamers. Next up for the platform is an announcement from Ben 10 Alien Force developer, Vicious Cycle, that includes the following:

"Vicious Cycle Software announced today that the company is partnering with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) to provide Vicious Engine, the leading middleware solution, to game developers in India."

It's still selling because Sony refuses to "kill" it. Once they decide to make the PS3 backwards compatible, the PS2 will start dieing slowly...

The 20GB and 60GB PS3 models and early 80GB PS3 models were backwards compatible and the PS2 didn't start dying then. Even if all of the PS3's right now were backwards compatible, the PS2 still would be selling at the same rate.

It's still extremely popular, especially in areas of the world where annual income per person is below average.

It's a cash cow for Sony and I'm not sure how much of an impact it really does have on PS3 sales. I hear the argument that it would help PS3 sales if they discontinued the PS2, but I'm not sure of the validity of it.

I say that so long as people are willing to buy the product, they should continue to offer it!

Well they still have a lot of people in the continent of Asia. Geez, and somebody said PS2 is in its deathbed.

By far, it's the best console since it has so many games! Also, there are still devs making games for it.

Umm, I'm not sure how to argue against that point. o_O

I don't think Sony is ignoring the PS3 because they continue to produce PS2s. I'm pretty sure they have more than one person handling each thing.

In countries like India or China annual income is still way too low for PS3. They can afford to pay for PS2 so selling them there is a wise choise for future PS3 sales. And all games are pirated there anyway so they can only sell profitable hardware there and PS3 isn't yet profitable. If income in these countries gets better then they can buy PS3 later.

Sony would be stupid to kill the PS2..it's another of them to offset there loses they're taking with the PS3, it's still selling millions of PS2 a year which means the public is still interested in a PS2..

The PS2 has become Sony's Wii , PPl who are buying PS2's will most likely upgrade to the PS3 in the future.

and just to think it's hasn't hit $99 yet in the US...lol..

and this is a good move buy Sony to offer the PS2 in countires will a lower annual income , nice way to gain a foothold in that region..

By the way, it sounds like Sony is building up an army of developers in Asia.

So many people say Japan's video game industry is losing its hold. But sounds like Sony is trying to invigorate the rest of Asia.

I can see Asia becoming huge game developers in the next few generations. It won't just be Japan anymore.

Its cheap(as in the price not the system) and the people who like cheap stuff buy it. why get your kid who has never really played video games that much a 360 or ps3. if a was a parent i would get my kid a ps2.....its the way parents think.
I personally would rather get a ps2 over a Wii any day.

8 - When my kids...
...PS2 packed in, I asked them if they wanted a Wii or another PS2...needless to say we got another PS2. Price and the huge library of quality games was the winning factor.

Oh yes, and they saw the adds for Wii music in NZ...

The PS2 gets some good titles still... take the news James Bod... IGN said the ps2 version was the best of the lot... and it plays like Gears apparently which is actually very cool. I'll pick it up and give the ps3 version a rent.

Play FF12 and 10, GOW1 and 2, shadow of collosus....... Play it on your BC PS3s. It won't die because what games now are really eclipsing those experiences? Not many. The art direction in some of those games are seriously great. So far their are only a handful of games that have sufficiently been next gen forget Multiplayer. You'll find that nothing has really evolved past a few graphic updates here and there plus FF12 is one hell of a beautiful game I'm playing right now giving it a second chance wasnt in to it originally and am like did this gen come too soon or is there something missing with the devs upstairs because the games are getting shorter and less varied all shooters and nothing else. ME gears HAlo Resistance Bioshock COD series. All the highest rated games are shooters and most are built for multiplayer except for ME and Bioshock this gen. Every other genre except racing are not being made like they use too. I don't know but I love the PS3 because of BC and many of my PS2 games are being put through their paces because maybe its my Samsung 1080p TV or something but they hold up real well and are very good games.

It may be old now but I still love firing up my PS2; even amongst this day and ago of High Def and blu-ray. If I had to give up my 360, I wouldn't be too bad off as long as I still have my PS2. After all, I can't up and leave it (there are quite a few titles I still have yet to find and play).

17 - i think sony should let the ps2 go and focus on the ps3 now
ps2 is like 8 years now and it been out for so long now they should get the ps3 and put the xbox 360 and the nintendo wii and try to lower there price around january or march 09 so they have that chance still winning the next gen war i paid a grand for mine here and ive havent been dissapointed with any of it games

18 - i use to like sega until they dropped the dreamcast
and left the consumer in high and dried by giving the dreamcast up and i been with playstation all the way they are good with there hardware designs and with there fans where m$ rip there fans of by rushing a new console out and it remined me that was sega were doing in its heyday
