Treyarch: 'We've got the best shooter this Christmas'

Call of Duty: World at War will beat Gears of War and Resistance 2, insists developer.

Activision-owned developer Treyarch feels its latest Call of Duty title will top the likes of Gears of War, Far Cry and Resistance 2 to become the must-have shooter of Christmas.

World at War is the sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which topped the Christmas charts last year and is still the most played game on Xbox Live. And Treyarch's senior producer Noah Heller insists that fans of that game will not be disappointed with the follow-up.

"There's a lot of competition this year, but I feel very strongly we have the best shooter this Christmas," he explained. "There is a lot of people new to the Call of Duty franchise following COD4, and they won't be disappointed.

I don't think FC2 will be a big hitter with the consoles. I think Resistance 2 and Gears 2 will do well with the audience who enjoyed the first ones, and the same will happen with CoD WaW. It looks to be more of the same gameplay with WW2 and a few extras that seem nice. I'll pick it up, sure.

Well, it is basically CoD4 with more weapons, more perks, more game modes, slightly improved lighting and special effects, and 4 player co-op with its own special modes and death cards.

So if you liked CoD4 and wanted more (MORE MORE MORE!!!) then you will like this game. Even if you don't care too much for the WWII setting.

its basically Call of Duty 4 set in WWII with different weapons. The game is not bad by any means, and I feel it plays just as good as the one before it. But it doesn't do anything better or worse than CoD4, and because of that, people may find the experience stale.

They may feel that this game is the best by default, because it is so similar to what was arguably considered the best last year. But even still, this is a bold claim when you have Gears 2 and Resistance 2 coming out days before it.

Okay, so earlier this year I said "no way am I gonna play CoD5. I'm not going back to WWII. I don't think Treyarch can do this justice."

And then I got my hands on the beta a couple of days ago. Frankly, it feels like a CoD4 (not surprising, since it's built on that engine)expansion pack. Imagine getting a ton of new maps, new weapons, new perks, etc for CoD4. That's what this feels like. Sort of like Rock Band 2. :-)

So am I going to buy CoD: WaW? Yes.

Am I also going to buy Gears 2? Yes.

Hell, I might even buy Quantum of Solace, though the silence on that one is disconcerting.

Oh my god, not another WW2 shooter. No matter how close it is to CoD4. For me personally, I would go with Quantum of Solace, though. Good that you bring that up. I always missed a strong story in CoD4. That might be it, though. Using the same pimped CoD4 engine in a modern environment with a strong story.

I agree I will buy this but I think the WWII theme is enough to turn alot of COD4 fans away, especially on PS3 where R2 and KZ2 are around the corner. I am on the fence with Quantum of Solice as well, I really like the new Bond movies and have been impressed with what I have seen of the game running on the COD engine. Boy I have too much stuff to get threw this year.

If any Treyarch game has potential to gain sales this holiday... I believe it will be the new 007 game! CoD 5 just doesn't interest me that much, and the fact that the new 007 will use the CoD 4 engine, and have some of the play mechanics of RS: Vegas... has caught my attention. I haven't cared about a 007 game since Goldeneye, but this one could be something great if they can pull it off!

Joke's apart I doubt it will sell as well as COD4. COD4 set the standard for multiplayer shooters. You can't argue with that and COD5 is just kind of an expansion pack to that. WWII weapons killed this game for me. After playing COD4 i just can't go back to WWII weapons. Plus with multiplayer shooters like FarCry2, R2, Gears 2, Socom and online games like LBP. I doubt anyone will have time to play this game like people play COD4. R2 will be the most played game on PSN until Killzone 2 comes out and same is the case with XBL which will be ruled by Gears 2 until Halo Recon comes out.

ha no, I played the beta and I stopped after awhile. COD WAW is NOT the best shooter this Christmas by a long shot. We have an open world game full of awesome weapons and explodable everything. We have a game with better graphics, online and everything in between, hello CHAINSAW! and than we have a game with massive online, massive levels and ridiculous weapons. I've played the beta and the multiplayer is more or less like COD4....more like the multiplayer of COD4 with WWII mods or something...didnt like it at all. Donno about the single player campaign but it does have co-op, that certainly makes things interesting but its nothing that we havent seen. Greatest shooter this Christmas? Dont think so.

The Jasper chipsets have been in manufactured 360's since some time in August. I think it's something like all the lot numbers 8031 and above but I can't find anything official yet. Just wait til mid-november and buy one. You would be guaranteed to get one sometime during Christmas since so many are going to be sold.

With all due respect. Call of Duty 4 was a hit last year because it had little competition. You may not like GeOW or R2, but that does not make them insignificant competition. Gears2 will sell like crazy, R2 will have very good sales, and Far Cry 2 is just another strong competitor.

WaW is going to have very good sales, but not up to the level of COD4 or the other shooter this holiday season.

agree about Far Cry 2...I gave it more of a chance than I do most shooters that give me a bad vibe early on...its definitely worthy of the 8's its been getting...but the competition is so fierce, I almost feel sorry for it...

its simply that they didn't remove the things that everyone complains about with open world games...some missions are extremely redundant (stop this convoy...stop this train...assasinate this guy...blow up this barrel...blow up this bridge)...it gets ridiculous...and then there is the driving to and from missions, which takes way longer than actually completing the relatively quick and simple objective...the AI suffers from the same 'unfairness' as Crysis...in which, no matter what, you can be spotted and tracked by a sniper from miles away, despite the fact that they blend into the environment so ridiculously well it takes hours of panning just to find who is shooting at you...

overall for me...its that the game is work at times...games are not supposed to be work..at all...they are supposed to be fun nearly all the time...Far Cry 2, and GTAIV for example, are about 50/50 on work and fun...you have to go do something you don't feel like doing before you get to do something fun...until that is fixed, i'll always take a well scripted single player shooter over an open world title like this...

COD5 is a multiplatform game. Everyone that I know that owns a 360 and a ps3 is getting this game for either console, on top of Gears and Resistance. there is not a chance in hell that CoD 5 breaks into the sales that CoD 4 did last year...CoD 4 only had to go up against Halo 3, which was regarded by even die hard Halo fans to be a let down...different story this year...360 people will be playing Gears 2...and PS3 people will be playing Resistance 2...in general of course...

I play CoD 4 nearly daily still...and nearly everyone I talk to in game is either getting Res 2...or just sticking with CoD 4...most people do not want to go back to WWII after getting to use the awesome modern weapons in CoD 4...and feature wise compared to Resistance 2, world at war is a joke...

CoD 5 will do well...just like very CoD game so far...but I expect a reaction to it a lot like CoD 3, where most just said 'meh' and stuck with the CoD title they were playing before its release...in this case, CoD 4...

the AI for co-op has been confirmed to be fixed for release...it is a beta you know...thats kind of the stuff they are working on ironing out...the problems with the AI are not that it is horrible in any given instance...its that the overpowered enemies that take tons of damage to put down, are also very easily confused by flanks...thats all...and the beta forums have confirmation that it was already addressed...

visually...i'll give you that...the online portions of Resistance 2 are nothing out of control...its acceptable given the amount of stuff on screen and the size of the maps...but the single player looks much better in every aspect...there are reports that the open beta being used now, visual code wise, has been in use with zero updates since Spring 2008 (was used internally before it went live)...which would make sense when you see how unfinished a lot of effects look...but texture and lighting wise there are still some problems that I bet are simply a matter of how big the online games are...and that there is no way around it if you want a PS3 to put 59 other controlled players on screen at once...

but the gameplay works...the weapons are fun and balanced...the xp system is extremely deep...and the community features (linked to a website designed by bungie) with real time stat updates and everything is amazing...the AI that controls the objectives in a 60 player skirmish is nearly flawless...and the new gameplay mechanics and control layout works much better than the original...

I guess that is what you are missing...Resistance FAll of Man was a great launch title, and Resistance 2 goes so far above and beyond what the first one did...so thats saying something...read up on the IGN review if you are interested...bad AI, poor visuals, whatever other complaints you have; the reviewer stated that its possibly the best online multiplayer he has ever played...and that he is also 'very picky when it comes to multiplayer'...

Probably it is ... but when you start playing it it will feel like you already played it (COD4 engine)..

Its like they applied a new theme for the game, but still Co-op , trophies new maps - ill be getting this on day 1

If there talking about FPS then sure what's out there is rather mediocre but I don't think so when it comes to Gears 2. COD5 is across every single platform from mobile to Wii so they have a sales pool advantage but as far as sales on the 360, Gears 2 will own it. I know I'm not buying another WW shooter this year.

13 - COD ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN THE REST

I've gone back to COD3 on the 360 lately with SOCOM sitting here (weaksauce of a game cause it's a SUPERCAMPFEST and buggy and hell). That's what tactical is supposed to be? Just camp away and snipe? It's now confirmed. I hate 3rd person shooters. I should have learned from Gears of War, and Metal Gear. Although MGS was intresting for a while. I hate science fiction shooters. I like real guns not some bug zapper. COD franchise control mechanics are the best. Why can't everyone else copy the control setup? Then maybe they might have a chance. Clicking down to Aim Down Sight is lame (anything ubisoft, Battlefield). Having to press on the directional pad to aim down sight is lame(SOCOM). It's not like the control scheme is patented or something. At least give us the option of mimmicking the Call of duty control setup please. I look forward to countless hours playing COD WAW.

No chance against either of them. A lot of people from the beta say CoD5 gets stale quickly, I'm not in it so I wouldn't know though.

CoD5 will sell well, but it's really just another multi plat on the list. In general, Xbox owners are hyped for Gears 2, and will buy that over CoD5, and PS3 owners are hyped over R2 and will buy it over CoD5.
