Team ICO given special Visual Arts award at CEDEC 2008

At this year's CEDEC (CESA Developers Conference), on behalf of the entire team, Fumito Ueda, Junichi Hosono and Hajime Sugiyama were presented with a special award for Visual Arts for their contribution to the video game industry.

ICO won the award, surpassing other better-known titles like Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid. The game was praised for its atmosphere and presentation of contrasting light and shadow. Ueda had a few lines ready for the occasion:

"Thank you for this award. When we started working on ICO ten years ago, we faced many challenges because we wanted to create something which did not exist. We are now facing a similar challenge with our new project. Please wait a little more, we are sure you'll like it very much. Thank you again."

They definitely deserve this award, Ico is one of the most underrated titles ever, even most people who have played SotC haven't played Ico (which is the better game IMO, but both are awesome).

Yeah so true,ICO was in production for about 4 years and sold about 650k WW which is a disaster,but thnaks god Sony supported TEAM ICO and didn't drop them

There is a reason why Sony has so many first party studios and none of them leaves (unlike Bungie) or gets closed. Sony gives time and puts faith in them, thats why they make great games most of the time cause their vision is not hampered by corporate decisions.

its difficult to make anther original game for many games teams...but this team made the greatest game ever on ps2 ( SOTC ) after the beautiful ico...

Whatever game they have instore for PS3 is at the top of my list.

PS3 has so much stuff I want going for it, but none of it is solid.

New Team Ico game (rumored)
New Rockstar Exclusive (rumored)
New Twisted Metal (rumored)

If they deliver on all this stuff, they could be the best console. But they still haven't delivered.

Twisted Metal isn't rumored and neither is the Team ICO game. I mean, how can you even say the Team ICO game is rumored? Yoshida talked about it, and so did Ueda. I'd believe them if I were you. I hear they have ninjas :x

A well deserved award....

For me a perfect next team ICO game would be a mix of both Ico and SOTC....Where you play as you did in ICO,but would get "boss battles" throughout the game,as we did in SOTC....

The best of both Worlds,a nice mix of both classics....

Team ICO is about reinventing gameplay, not reusing it. That's why we'll never see a formal ICO 2 or SotC 2 (at least not in the state that we would generally imagine them in).

Yes I know,I agree.....But what I really meant was a Ico type game,action adventure,with platforming,puzzle solving,and then throughout the game boss fights like the ones we got in some fashion in SOTC...

A new World,new characters,but gameplay wise is what I meant,but done with the extra power they have today,an advanced gameplay mechanic,but with alot of what was done in ICO &SOTC,I think that basic formula should not be totally overlooked,just expanded on.......At least that is my hope.

Either way,I know one thing,it will be special....

ICO and SOTC in particular are games without equal artistically and atmosphere wise for me personally. The only other game that i like more overall is MGS4.
