del Toro: "There are only two game classics. Both are by Team Ico."

From PS3 Attitude, Brodiesan writes: "Though lauding the likes of GTAIV and Bioshock there are only two games del Toro considers good enough to warrant the moniker of "masterpiece": Ico and Shadow of the Colossus..."

1 - TeamICO are the best
and different. Their games are special, not everyone can enjoy them the way they are meant to be. But if you can, you will come to know why they are masterpieces.

1.1 - I rented Shadow of Colossus back then.
The game was pretty good, because it made me think

"why couldn't other developers do this or think of this" DEFEATING the last Colossus was MOMENTUS.

Although it had it share of flaws but the feeling of finally reaching the Colossus and going

"Holy SH*T" was awesome.

i have to disagree. Though these 2 were unparalleled in their respective genres. Capcom's Clover Studios blew me away twice wit Viewtiful Joe and Okami and not just cuz of their graphics design

Viewtiful Joe while it's was a good game...it should never be compared to games like Ico or Okami.....

Maybe not directly compared, but im talkin about in comparison to the subject of this article. Ppl play diff games for diff reasons and though I loved Ico and SOTC for their deliverance, i equally (or perhaps a tad bit more) loved Okami and VJ for entirely diff reasons and i feel they both can earn a spot on that board.

If u really wanna dig i think LOK: Soul Reaver is above them all

Like it or not both games are simply fantastic. Sure there weren't huge commercial successes they stand alone as truly unique games in the crowded gaming market.

I can't wait for the PS3 follow up title.

That`s why I like Sony SO MUCH, because they still completely support devs like Team Ico regardless of sales because of the "product" their delivering. Which is truly amazing from a business sense. This is something I feel MSFT is scared to do, when you look a what 1st party stuff they do have.

Yep, you won't find ICO for very much under $40.

I have a hardback copy, but it's not for sale. And Shadow of the Colossus hardback.

And your only weapon is not just a stick. You get a sword, unless you didn't finish t. you can also find a mace, and for a bit of comedy, a phallicly emotive light saber.

but it won't play in my fat PS2. It's a blue coated disk. I have a 40gb PS3 so no luck there. I plan on buying a new PS2 before they go the way of the dodo.

Only Ico and Shadow of the Colossus have conveyed emotion using the video game as the medium, and not the text. There has been no other large-scale game that has done that yet. Zelda is no exception, especially with its shallow characters and happy-go-lucky good vs. evil themes. Not to mention the story is always the same.

4.3 - Zelda is also a classic.
But uses a very different kind of approach than Team Ico.

If you've seen Pan's Labyrinth, you'd understand why the developer would choose Team Ico's games as the only classics by his standards.

I think that's fair.

It's the onyl game where I felt sorry within gameplay, rather than within text or narrative of cutscene.

Taking those creatures down is meant to affect you. And the only part that annoyed me, was mixed with an air of inevitability, and was never taken out of the gaming experience. Was when Agro fell.

I kind of think that Del Toro is talking as a movie director, and not as a gamer. I'm sure if he spoke this with his gamer perspective, that he'd list a few more games. Maybe not, I dunno.

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus are definantly my top favorite PS2 games and I loved them both.... I've beaten Shadow of the Colossus about 4 or 5 times and I completed ICO 2 or 3 times... along with Insomniac, Naughty Dog, and Sony Santa Monica, Team ICO is one of my favorite Sony 1st party studio.

There are only two movies that I would call a masterpiece and those are Pan's Labyrinth and The Orphanage by Guillermo Del Toro. He is one of the best in the movie industry today. Team Ico games are excellent. Definitely agree with Del Toro.

The promise of Team ICO games is what amde me buy a PS3.

Don't underestimate it. I just assumed the PS3 wouldn't have such a rock period last fall. But it's all over now and I can get a huge selection of titles for my PS3.

7 - i like
Del Toro, and i was supposed to have a meeting with him along with my two friends to see about getting him to back one of our shows, but sadly the person setting up the meeting was a flake, so it hasn't happened yet.

i'd love to see what Team Ico would have done with a setting like in Pans Labyrinth.

hell, they probably would have done the Hellboy game justice too.

i can't wait to see what they've been cooking up for the PS3 these past few years. can't wait for TGS!

These two games really deserved much more success than they had. I only hope that Team Ico's next game(s) do better sales wise. And if you have a PS2 (or a backwards compatible PS3) and you haven't experienced either of these games I'd recommend you find a copy. Used or not. I think everyone who hasn't should really give these games a chance. Many games are fun to play but I don't feel many are able to create the type of atmosphere and feeling that these games achieve. I really feel that both give you an experience like no other.

Ico with its incredible air of mystery and isolation. Taking such a simple story that's admittedly been done countless times before (basically 'save the princess') and managing to create something truly refreshing and magical. There has never been ANY game to effect me the way that Ico has. It's hard to even explain in words... as cheesy as that may sound.

Shadow of the Colossus then came out and delivered in a completely different way. Whereas Ico was based more around puzzle solving and contained essentially one 'boss fight', SOTC featured no puzzles and may be the only game to ever feature boss fights exclusively. There are no other enemies in the game (ok, ok, if you want to count the very end) besides the 16 Colossi you face. Most towering hundreds of feet above you. Sure, you may have faced large bosses in other games such as God of War... but the real difference here is how small you feel. You're not like some kind of god... merely a young man with a sword and bow. It feels like a real accomplishment and something extraordinary to scale and take down one of these behemoths. Accompanied by a fantastic score that only pushes the battle into an even more epic level.

It's sad that some many other derivative games have gotten far more success than these games... but hopefully more will continue to discover and be moved by these gems. I simply cannot wait to see what this team has in store for us in the future. If their past work is anything to go by it'll be nothing short of gaming bliss.

8.1 - I agree, it's hard to put into words.
I still remember the feeling of encountering the first colossus, climbing over the platforms not knowing what to expect. Then you hear the sound of the ground shaking and this huge colossus comes into view, the camera zooms back and there you are standing with only a sword and a bow and arrow. I've never felt so overpowered by an enemy in a game before.

The game is truly unforgettable. It evoked so many emotions throughout.

Team Ico creates an emotionally evoking game for the PS3.

Using the surroundings, atmosphere, situation, etc to make us feel certain emotions... all without the use of words or at least very little.

9 - Shadow of the Colossus
will go down in my book as one of the greatest games ever. few games can truly stand by themselves and stand apart and shine as much as SotC and ICO have. And what i mean when i say "by themselves" is that the MGS series is fantastic, but it is a SERIES. series are generally phenomenal (like MGS) but to have a game stand alone and be called a "masterpiece" is hard to come by.

Team ICO is composed of geniuses. pure & simple.

10.2 - Yeah, I'll explain
Nintendo makes games to make money. They make them as fun as possible.

Team Ico expresses themselves through interaction.

They're polar opposites.

People may say OoT is a good/the best *game* game (I disagree), but to say it's anything close to the artistry of Team Ico is laughable. It's just a commercial product made for fun and money. It's a HORRIBLE insult to Team Ico and other artists to call Nintendo games art in any way or form.

SOTC was a brilliant game. I know it’s hard to believe, but I think it could’ve been even greater if it were not held back by the PS2, or any last gen system for that matter. I’d cream myself if a sequel was made with the cell’s power.
