How it Works: SingStar PS2-PS3 compatibility

Official PlayStation.Blog:

Hey everyone, just wanted to give you a quick update on some recent SingStar news. Yesterday we announced that SingStar PS3 Vol. 2 will be coming to the U.S. this October. You can check out the full details on SingStar PS3 Vol.2, as well get the latest on today's SingStore update at IGN.

Coming out of Leipzig, you may have read about a cool new SingStar PS3 disc swap feature which incorporates the SingStar PS2 library. We wanted to make sure everyone was up to speed on what the disc feature entailed, so here's the lowdown from the SingStar development team:

SingStar track compatibility across PS2 & PS3 is enabled via the Disc Swap feature.

what are you talking about?

how can this be money grabbing if sony lets you use your existing ps2 singstar music??

ps3 singstar is merely reading the song data files on the ps2 singstar disc ... it isn't playing ps2 singstar discs in emulation mode..

jeez some people

Since PS2 games are DVDs, all it's doing is reading the data on the disc and decoding it in a certain way so that the PS3 game knows what to do with it. Not much different from any other DVD you put into the system. It doesn't mean that 40GB models have the ability to play PS2 titles. Your normal PC DVD drive can also get the files off any PS2 disc.

@PikkonX: True but could be still sweet background for some exploit.

just thinking that there's no real reason every ps3 cant play ps2 games other than cash...
n ya this is good news if it means i can do a recording off one of my old ps2 singstar disks but not a big deal since i can already play them all in my 60gigPS3. Loading em on the hd woulda been the best tho since theres only a few songs on each disk we like we could really streamline our singstar experience.
While Im here anyone know if the American songlist is ever going to catch up to the Uk one?

1.5 - If you read up on the subject you would know
Sony would have to work on each game individually to get PS2 games to work on the bc less ps3s. So yes maybe they got Singstar to work on PS3's. It doesn't mean they are going to waste tons of man hours trying to get each individual PS2 game to work on those PS3s.

And calling Sony money grubbing at this point is a bit ridiculous. They have given gamers a ton of stuff for free compared to other companies. They make almost nothing on peripherals any more because very little of it is proprietary. They could have milked people on PS3 branded hard drives, memory cards, play and charge kits and A/V cables but they decided not to unlike their main competitor.

crck tho im pretty sure they could make a patch that would make most ps2 games compatible and not have to rework every ps2 title induvidually to fit. I can understand your point about the adaptability of the ps3 but I doubt the decision was made out of goodwill alone. Sony needs every edge it can find in this market which is good news for us lucky ps3 owners eh.

i'm more interested in how the hacking community will try to open this up to exploit possibly disc swapping for copied games..

2.1 - Exploits.
You know, it's not always about piracy when it comes hacking consoles. It just begins with playing copied games. Brief history.

First you hack the console to run unsigned code. Being able to play copied games is the first successful sign. (hello world)

Second you write a software that makes running unsigned code easy to do (ala Twilight Hack & burned DVDs as storage mediums for homebrew content)

Third you spread the open-code to the scene community by which they make software to entertain your console. (Homebrew Channel) (Running Linux) (Enabling more codec support)

Lastly you profit from the fact you can do more with your system now than ever before. Enabling copied games to be played is only the first step towards homebrew, but unfortunately the masses only look at the copied-games and not the whole picture. A pity really. I have the homebrew channel on my Wii and I've gotta tell you, my Wii has more codec support than the PS3 & 360 combined.

Sounds good but it would have been better if they allowed the songs to be exported to the Hard drive.

So is this software based or are they ROM dumping the file or is there hardware to read ps2 disc [for non-BC ps3]

very interesting.

4.1 - Unfortunately
PAL won't ever play on an NTSC console unless we get a new hack or new codebreaker type of software.
