Gran Turismo vs. Forza Motorsport : Ultimate Comparison

"Both have cars, both have racing, so what's the difference?"

For people unaware about these racing series, you should know they are probably the best racing simulations in account for realism. Gran Turismo is the PlayStation exclusive series and Forza Motorsport is the Xbox loyalist. They are not NFS-ish titles giving a laid-back and blissful driving. Gran Turismo is a completely settled franchise now whereas Forza Motorsport is a brand new series having only two titles till date.

You got that backwards. I'm sorry, but any game you can go around a corner at a 160mph and bounce off a wall with no consequences is an arcade game, not a sim. Playing GT5 online is like playing bumper cars. In Forza people actually try to race. Because if you hit someone hard you'll be out of the race. It GT people will slam you off the road on a corner because they know nothing will happen. Ive always been a huge GT fan. But every since the first Forza I've realized GT is an arcade game the pretends to be a sim. Game-play is what makes a sim, not graphics. And as far as customization goes Forza has GT beat by a long-shot. Which is one of most important things in a sim. A like both games a lot, but when it comes down to which one is more of a sim Forza wins. GT does have the most amazing graphics I have ever seen though.

1.2 - To me its a little bit different
if i want arcade experience, i would go for initial D
if i want sim, i would go for GT 5...

edit: to the one that replied just a few seconds faster than me...

I don't know if it is a trend in n4g, or if it is a flaw of the bubble system, but it is funny here because every single time people bash a title or a console, they tend to say they are the fans or they used to be the fans...o well, perhaps it protects your bubbles and sounds more like a fair guy?

Meh, if you want to bash something, just go for it and be a man...don't be like i used to be a fan but blah blah blah....

lol. I could care less about these stupid bubbles. Take them if you want. I guess its to hard for you and some of the other people on this site to comprehend that not everyone picks one console or one of two competing games. I must have been dreaming all those years I spent hundreds of hours playing the GT series. I was in no way trying to bash GT. Just stating the reasons I think Forza is more of a sim. And from the comments here I can clearly see most of these people have never played Forza.

There is absolutely nothing realistic about Fronza damage model. It is almost GTA 4 like, you can ram a car head on into a wall at 90 mph then drive off with a crunched bumper and a cracked windshield. At least in GTA 4 you get thrown out of the car and get your head busted up.

I completely agree with you season007

Initial D has been one of the few proven arcade fanchises, I don't know a single person who hasn't liked it. Plus if you are into the series it makes it that much funner to play it.

1.6 - Don't even bother with this
This is just a blatant attempt for hits. They are comparing them when they haven't even played them.

One need only read the section discussing "damage" effects in the graphics 'comparison.' It says GT5: Prologue has "similarly detailed damage effects." !!!

There is NO damage in GT5: Prologue.

This comparison is FAIL! Just an worthless attempt to get hits, and it worked!

That comment proves you've never played it like most of the people here. Damage is not only cosmetic. If you did what you explained in Forza you would barely be able to drive afterwards.

1.8 - I have both games, and
GT5 won me over big time. I don't care about running off a wall or whatever. The realism is what I care about and GT5 is awesome and way better in terms of physics. Playing Forza2 after GT5 feels like driving a boat. I made a thread one time on gamespot forums on this subject and provided pictures of both. here is a link to that thread

2 - They both are great!
Forza has more arcade gameplay.
GT5:Prologue is more of a driving simulation.

Which is more fun depends on what you like to play or just your mood. They both are great.

Since Forza is just up to version 2 it will be great to see how Forza 3 compares to the full GT 5. Either way, they are both the best of the best in driving games.

Want even more realism now? Get a steering wheel for GT5...it makes a big difference.

3.1 - Forza's pretty impressive
Especially how far they have developed Forza, just looking at versions 1 & 2. Clearly they focused on coming as close to the GT experience as they could, and succeeded in just about everything.

I think just from the perspective of competitors, Forza will stay on the 360 & GT on the PS3.

Either way, each platform has a great driving experience.

6 - forza is too realistic
to be compared to GT imo.

GT the cars all feel the same, and the damage really takes away. But I have to say gt does look quite a bit better. And the physics is pre-programmed per car, and there's not as many features.

That said, I can't wait to see forza 3 square off against gt5.

dude have you even played gt5p or in matter fact forza? First GT5p as well as the rest of the gt's are driving simulations while forza is more of a arcade racer than a sim. Also as far as I know GT5p has no damage I think you got the two games mixed up buddy:P

Yeah, gotta love Forza's "realistic damage"

Why don't you try it out? Jump in your car and smash into a wall at 100+mph ... you'll be fine, your bumper will hang off and you'll have some scratches nothing major.

You can turn damage off in Forza.
You can even turn it down to medium or low.

So, with damage turned down, you should be able to give your car hell before it breaks down.

Turn it on full for more realistic damaging.

That video doesnt say what level the damage is on, looks like low to me.

You havent played GT5 yet, so how do you know.

The prologue is not the same - has no damage for one.

Also, won't these gaems be over a year apart once GT5 finally comes out.

GT5 should be a lot better, but i could have played forza for over a year by now. GT5 isnt out yet.

Their conclusion was rather one sided for an "unbiased" comparison.
"Whats the difference?" The same reason you wrote the artical...because they are on different consoles.

"GT5: Prologe may be a decition for an average gamer but a must buy for a GT fans..."
A supporter of the console or the game itself may feel insulted buy this comment. That person would never identify himself with or as an average gamer, and there for be aggrivated.

However it is made more insulting when taken into context"
...and Forza is a must buy for arcade driving lovers still looking for realism but a decition for someone looking for high-tech graphics."

"GT5: Prologe..may" : Stating this leads the reader to believe that even the average gamer might not even pick this title up and only GT fans would. That it has little or nothing for anyone other than that.
"Forza...is" Implying that any self-repecting "hardcore" gamer would pick it up as it does have everything.

The authers closing comments make clear his own views and that this artical is ment to do nothing but have Forza and GT fans, and in turn, PS3 and Xbox 360 fans at eachothers throats.

Don't buy into this.

11 - Gt or Forza are not a driving simulation.
I'm a big racing fan.

I've played many racer Gtr , Gtr2 , Gt legend , the EA f1 200* series , Rfactor , Live for Speed , Race07 , Richard Burn Rally , The colin mcrae serie. I've played all the Gt serie and forza 1 and a bit of forza 2.

And i can tell you that GT5 and or Forza2 with or without Racing wheel are NOT sims. They are lots of fun but not sim racing . So please stop calling them Driving simulator,
when they are only racing game.
Gt5 and feel a little bit more real because each car have a different feel but the braking zone and weight feel or even Damages kills it . Same goes for Forza the customization are great but physic is a real killer here.
I could add Grid/Dirt in here as well they are both lots of fun arcade feel too.

If you want sims . go play some Race07 and live for speed. with no driving assist. You will have a blast.

Notes: I own all the above racing games and Gt3-4 and gt5p and also owned forza1 on my original xbox . My friend bough Forza2 for me and i played a quite a bit already.

12 - Ultimate Comparison?
BS. This article is just an opinion about both games and you can tell they are more Forza drivers than GT5. Sorry, but to say that Forza handles better is silly. They are both different and both handle in their own rite. Both are fun but not one is better than the other, only different and made to suit certain tastes.

I love em both but if i had to choose one it would be Forza2 for the auction house and paintshop. Ive spent as much time on that as i have racing. Your car is much more yours than it is in GT. Painting and tweaking your cars gives you a sense of ownership and online it feels like your racing against other players engines tuned to the max.
On GT its clones all the way.
Gt has great graphics and style but Forza2 i find more fun and theres more options. I wish P.Digital would add more to there franchise as it seems like GT3 with better graphics sometimes. Overall i was a little dissapointed with prologue but am hoping the full product will be a cracker.

14 - SIMS should have damage
I have not played GT since I had a PS1 so I don't know if it has damage or not. If it does not then it can't be called a SIM. Forza to was cool but it was not great. In my opinion if you hit a wall head on going 100 mph in a Honda Civic the race should be over.

Arcade Racer = Daytona U.S.A , Cruise X , La Rush , Burnout , NFS .

I said they are not sims that is all. They are Fun Games see here "Racing game".

Forza and Gt5 are both great game and they are definitely not arcade racer and they both got their own style, But it really tick me off when some people refer to them has sims when they are not.

Enough said !! See ya all on the race track.

16 - Haven't played Prologue...
But I've played GT2,3,4 and Forza 1 and 2. I guess my taste is not sophistocated because I don't sense much difference in handling between the two - both are far more realistic than a Burnout or NFS. - And I concede that I've never played the hardcore PC racers that are supposed to be really "real" - GT and Forza are close enough to reality for me.

Both of these games give me the satisfaction that I've "driven" well when I win or hit the perfect line in a turn.

"Better" is a matter of opinion, and I like both franchises. GT was the standard, and I think Forza is a worthy opponent. Look at it this way - whatever console you choose, you can get a great "realistic" racer. That's all that matters to me.

Lots of respect for Forza, but it just didn't keep me hooked. Two weeks and I never booted it up again.
I've always been partial to a bit of GT though and this gen is no exception, I still play a bit of prologue.

Still, they are both good titles.

Which is more than can be said about the article! Dreadfully written, have they not heard of proof-reading? It reads worse than a google translation, and whilst his English is infinitely better than my Indian will ever be, I don't try and publish articles in another language. Judging by this one, neither should he! :)

You also can use the Logitech G25 with your PC to get even more use out of it. If you haven't played both games you can't say one is better than the other. Hands down GT5P is the better game, I should know....

22 - Comparison?!?
Forza is a great game while gran turismo only has a prologue & im hoping they follow some key elements from forza.
The team that made forza worked really hard to bring a realistic sim that beats all other gran turismo games of the past & in my opinion still beats prologue.
If it wasnt for forza I would have still believed that licenced cars in a video game could not have damage. Forza has a great community that allows many options I hope to have in gran turismo. Custom paint jobs and art made from the user is Killer. I once saw the barricade cop car from transformers overlap me.
Nothing can be taken away from the team that made forza on the limited DVD9 disc. They did the very best they could & I personnally feel they have created a benchmark for future racing sims.
Just like i give credit to Battlefield: Bad Company because from now on, Soundwise all other shooters have to be as good or better than the sound in Bad Company.
Im hoping the team that made forza can get out of their contract with microsoft and produce a masterpiece on the Bluray disc. I would pay double to play forza with better graphics at 1080P 60 fps!
One can only hope.

Oh & to the people that want to call these games arcade racers need to stop srutinizing words. They are video game Simulators. As in they try their hardest to include as much realism as possible. SIM.

heard enought i've got Forza and PGR4 and GT5P

every Gran Turismo (which i have) has always sold over 10million (not including GT tokyo concept and GT4P main series not introduction to play)

formula 1 drivers and top gear presenters all say that jeramy clackson "gran turismo would only be more realistic if a steak impaled you every time you crashed".

Gran turismo 4 has more cars than forza 1 & 2 and PGR 1, 2, 3, & 4

its a simulator, BMW said they have spent millions on a sim and when they saw GT5P (with the Ferrari 2007) and used it they said it was better then there own development at the time.

PGR and Forza has had ferraris since they appeared and guess what Gran turismo gets the F1 scuderia ferraris first with out FOM (formula one management) contract

the G25 is the first wheel to have live dynamics which is used in F1 currently Brake BIAS and rev limiter and formaly Traction control and ABS

on Forza you can only configure the dynamics before race not like real life.

live dynamics is used in

Formaula 1
Le Mans
Touring car
and more

even a road legal cars have live dynamics from the cheap renualt v6 and the most expensive road car the bugatti veyron

forza2 is the better racing game, mainly due to it having damage and being able to customise your vehicle, its great when you have spent many hours tuning and doing a paintjob on your car then taking it online.

i was disappointed with prologue because of online play..so many people just rode the walls in the game which hardly made it realistic

for a gloryfied demo it was decent but nothing to write home about other than it looked great from a graphics point of view, and i could not invite friends to race which was dumb

the in car view on gt5p was excellent although thats not really a sim view, and the detail of the london track was top notch.

gt5 should be better than forza2 when its released if its got damage, and better a.i as the a.i in gt5p was not that great as it was pre scripted.

you would do the same race and the same car would spin off or go off the track at the same spot.damage in races make most people race properly.if people know they can ride the walls without penalty they will do it.

forza2 needed more exciting tracks because a lot of tracks were boring, other than that it is the best racer out atm, until gt5 comes out it will remain the king of racers.

and for people who said forza2 damage was unrealistic, well unrealistic damage is far more realistic than a game with no damage.

actually playing gt5p made me go and buy forza2 again,so who is up for 10 laps around nurburgring lol
