Call of Duty 5: Futuristic warfare?

The Call of Duty series is ones of Activisions most prised franchises. Famed for its realistic World War 2 combat, it was no wonder that many eyebrows were raised when Call of Duty 4 went modern. However it was pulled off well and received universal praise and many game of the year awards. Recently announced, Call of Duty 5 is set in a "new theatre of war". Call of Duty has done World War 2, modern warfare and so this new theatre of War must logically be futuristic warfare.

Sorry but usually I'm fairly balanced in my criticisms but COD5 is all but confirmed as a WW2 shooter set in the Pacific Theatre (ie. new theatre) where the Americans and Japanese fought till 1945, and using the COD4 engine.

I think it would be cool if the CoD-team would play around a little more and try out different directions regarding the game-universe on the titles.

Future warfare could be cool, but I think the term warfare is universal and it doesn't matter what time or place it is.
I'd like to see a CoD-title take place in older historical scenarios or maybe in some kind of sci-fi/surreal/fantasy-univers e.
A stylized World War 1-scenario for instance.
After all, war never changes. :)

6 - I'm so WW2'd out

CoD4 was great (Minus the kill cam for me) and a wonderful move for the franchise. I feel that going back to WW2 would be a bad choice. More people became interested after it went modern for a reason.

resistance 1 was during WW2 years but world war 2 never happened because the aliens attacked. resistance2 is set durin the 1950's. only reason looks futuristic is becuase of the army using chimera technology. something like that didnt really read every single little note in the game

I mean, Call of Duty 5 might be worth picking up if they really are using COD4's engine. COD4 still looks amazing even now. I'm playing through the single player campaign again and just can't stop admiring what a great job Infinity Ward did with COD4. COD3 engine was nothing to get excited about but if they can use the COD4 engine and maintain structural integrity, I just might enjoy playing COD5 with that WW2 setting in the Pacific!

Its called killzone 2 that will be my cod futuristic replacement for ps3. i would like to to see another modern warfare game perhaps with soap or all new characters since most of ur buds die in cod4 in a different theater setting. that game could easily be continued from the ending. i dont want anymore ww2 for awhile, i know its historic but i like modern day surprises.

The problem is many games have done Futuristic wars. And ww2 games tend to get stale. Activision should do a war game around Iraq or a country simular to it. Keep the modern theme just a bit more.Thats what turned me onto Cod4

It's been mentioned a bunch of times but yes, CoD 5 will take place in the Pacific Theater of WWII.

Treyarch hired on some level designers who "liked WWII shooters" a while back, and the game - in a rough form - has been seen by people who confirm that it takes place in WWII.

If CoD5 went to the near future or back to the past or if they stay in the present it will be a solid game so long as the game is developed by IF.

CoD 4 is the best game I've played since last the 90s. It made the purchase of a PS3 valid although made me think that I wih I'd just bought a 360.

I can see it already. Canada invades America and now we have to go to war with them and their advanced Maple Syrup tree sapping techniques.
