The Showdown: was Microsoft right to dismiss the Wii's sales?

Arstechnica writes: "Microsoft isn't doing itself any favors when it crows about its US and worldwide sales of the Xbox 360 and then claims that it doesn't count the Wii as a competitor. The fact is, the industry may like to massage its own ego by making distinctions between the Wii and the 360 or PS3, but these things are all competing for the same consumer dollar."

It's a toy that's been outselling the 360 and the PS3.
Don't underestimate Nintendo.

1.3 - a toy can easily outsell PS3 and 360
but gamers dont care. toys are for babies and girls and gender confused boys.

a lot of things in the world outsells PS3 and 360. who cares?

Wow so the one showdown guy has such a hardon for visuals he can't play any past title unless it's on a handheld. People like that don't deserve to have the games they are playing now. I play all my games on a big screen TV and let me tell you straight up the Wii looks fine on it as do NES-Xbox original.

It's a gaming world and there are genres but not demographics. If someone happens to buy a Wii game they might not buy another game on a different system... seems like competition to me.

2.1 - It depends on the person.
It was really hard for me to consider any other console once I played on my friend's PS3. But my same friend likes the Wii as well. Sits right next to his Playstation.

2.2 - Isn't it funny....
That people who throw the word hardcore around so much are in many cases the ones that completely ignore the company that created hardcore gaming as it's known today.

With the way the economy is today, when a person makes a decision to purchase a particular system or game, it DOES hurt the other companies vieing for the same consumer base. In fact, the fact that Sony and Microsoft are both creating a rather large department to focus on "Casual" gaming, shows that they realize the need for this consumer base.

Saying that Nintendo isn't in the same running as they are is like having Porche say that Honda isn't competition because technically it doesn't stack up to their product.

It's stupid PR fluff.

2.3 - i agree
playing old title is fine in fact last summer i played breath of fire 4 using an emulator and FFVII (played it again) i might add.

My problem with the wii is that consoles are supposed to move on and offer improved visuals and better processing for more enemies on screen more interactive environments (upgraded physics engines etc..) and so on

but the wii instead of moving on added a new way of using controllers to play games which would have been fine but they barely improved the graphics engine and they barely improved the processing (physics,#enemies on screen) then they rereleased the exact same games but with motion controls. Tell me how that is good for the industry. The casuals flooded the market stupid superfoulous crappy "games" (in quotations because its debatable) such as wii fit are outselling actual games that take time and money to make. Casuals who buy these games are in no way going to somehow cross over in fact the only people saying it are the Nintendo fanboys in denial that thier system is rubbish. The systems been out for a while now and still there has been no evidence of this crossover and there most likely never will be all that is happening right now is a destruction of good high quality games.

Also to let you know i played the wii for a week when someone bought it (at launch) i immediately got tired of it, its just waving your arms around instead of pressing a button and you sacrifice graphics/processing power for it. And the person who bought it gave it to his brother and coninues playing his 360 also another person i know no longer plays it, he only plays it when people are over because its not good for anything else he now regrets it and is buying a 360 or ps3

the only people defending this console are die hard fanboys for nintendo who refuse to see the truth.

there is a light at the end of this tunnel games such as No More Heroes and Segas blood game seem to bring back the hardcore to the wii the only problem is that NMH (400,000) compared to wii fit (millions for a piece of crap weighing balance) didnt sell well and sega's game may not as well only further destroying real games and real gamers interests

I'm not trying to be elitist but cmon this is the worst thing that has happened in gaming for quite some time its almost fittingly ironic that Nintendo saved the gaming industry and is now destroying it.

EDIT: sorry for the wall of text. I got really into it for a second there.

2.4 - There are more than just diehard fanboys that have the system and enjoy it...
Remember, those who frequent sites like this are a very very very small portion of the consumer base of game companies. Try not to speak for all of them.

The fact is that there will be those that will move on to other systems or games due to being introduced to gaming per the Wii. My wife isn't a gamer, but she has been open to trying other games now because she was introduced and enjoys the Wii.

This follow the leader silliness has to stop at some point. Eventually, people need to realize that fun is at the forefront of the gaming industry, and all three systems deliver that. And yes, there are people that consider WiiFit and other games like that fun, and who do you think you are to judge what kind of gamer they are because you have a narrow minded view of life.

Everyone has their preference, and it's noones right to tell them what they should like.

2.5 - @brainiac
i'm not trying to judge people or force them to do anything in fact i stated i was trying not to be elitist.

I'm just saying this is starting a trend i am not all to happy about because it takes focus away from increasing your processing/graphics output of future consoles as well games that try to push those limits are possibly going to be in danger of going to the "casual" route. And i like certain games as well so dont get angry at me a gamer since i was young watching the new guys come in with thier own opinions on games they like, which is obviously different from mine and there is only so much industry and game developers/games to go around and i dont want resources wasted on games that i would take no part in at all as well games i dont even have a shred of respect for because they take little to no ability to make and are quite uninspired popularist trash that should be ignored instead it is imbraced.

I understand trying to get new people into gaming but dont act like destroying the games that push limits is in any way acceptable if there were nothing but wii-fit style/carnival games around i would have to find a new hobby.

And dont for a second act like its not trash its like telling someone a children's book is just as enjoyable/acceptable as The Count Of Monte Cristo because they are both books. the thing is its not one guy it takes alot of effort to make these stories/games workout instead your trying to make the market go casual gaming which is fine for them but i would consider it a waste of developers time and money which could have gone towards WAY better games

hopefully these gamers tastes mature over time and want the same things i want after my years of gaming

Games4fun what the heck? Denial is saying the Wii is not a good gaming machine. That's denial. Wii did improve it's graphics and prosessor which always changes from gen to gen Nintendo took another step forward by changing the input. Along with I don't know anybody who flails thier arms while playing Wii games. That's a misconception by non-Wii owners.

The people that take the time and effort to make Wii games make great fun games and deep and enriching tales. You can get the same experience from the Wii that you do from the PS3/360 it just won't be in the upscaled 720/1080. Yes I said upscaled because no game runs natively on that uber resolution everyone is so gaga about.

It doesn't matter how a box bounces in a room for a game to be good. Level design and character progression is key. Making new ways to play a game is also the only way forward or we'll be stuck playing the same game the same way with a new coat of paint every new gen.

The only reason most 3rd party Wii games are not good is because they don't spend as much time as they do with the other consoles that have done better in previous years. Don't be a blind man now. Wii has great games and is getting great games down the road. You aren't fooling anyone but yourself. Oh and yes even Wii Fit took lots of time and money. They didn't make it in a week if that's what you are trying to imply

3 - sure that should dismiss it...
That's how Microsoft is always the winner, they just ignore the competition. If Microsoft is losing, they dismiss the company that is beating them, so that way they're always the best.

Now, Now kids, let's think about what the article is actually abouit. Should the nintedo be considered in the same market as the PS3 or XBOX360??? My opinion is, not really. I view the nintendo for developing gamers, grooming them, exactly what nintedo did for us, so all of you that are nay saying nintedo, they are only doing what they have did since we were kids. We didn't bash it then, it was the best thing ever, and that's exactly how kids feel now. Kids aren't typically interested in violence as much as they are simple puzzle solving and cartoonish environments, that's what the wii has to offer. Really, they pose no threat as in actuallity Xbox and Playstaion would have almost the same numbers regardless. Wii hits a lot of the age group that the others don't, that's why they sell so much more. Everyone enjoys mario deep down, and the novelty that nintendo seems so good at dispensing. But should MS and PS be worried, no, not enough to make a difference IMO.

12 - Don't believe Microsoft was discounting the Wii.
Make no mistake, MS knows it can't compete with the Wii in console sales. What I believe they mean is that the Wii is competing for a market outside of regular gaming. The one that MS and Sony would love to participate in, but can't. They can do as many Scene It's and Singstars as they want, it won't happen. The Wii has everything from nursing homes to little kids. MS and Sony only wish their demographic was that diverse. I've seen gray haired women in suits playing a DS on their way to work, but never a PSP. So they aren't really competing because one is playing on a completely different field. It's like saying the local "Mom and Pop" hardware store in your neighborhood is competing with Home Depot. They are, but they kinda aren't.
