Call of Duty 5 set for six platforms

DarkZero: Tony Hawk may be taking a bit of a break, but it seems Activision has other plans for the Call of Duty series as they will be making COD5 available for six different platforms (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii, Nintendo DS and PS2).

Activision publishing president and CEO Mike Griffith comments "For Call of Duty, we're bringing the intensity of the recent Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare title to yet a new military theatre to engage our significantly larger user base which nearly doubled last year"

I have absolutely no interest in this one. Call me when Infinity Ward is involved again.

1.2 - cod3 was not that bad
it was not perfect and you could not skip the cut scenes, but the multiplayer was solid and supported more players than infinity ward could manage! (24 for those who never played it)

Woah how many players can COD4 support on consoles then? Glad I have it on PC and I can play 50 player battles :D

Silellak - You're completely right.

I don't want a COD that can run on 6 platforms.
"Jack of all trades, master of none." Ever heard that saying Treyarch?

So COD5 is going to have to run on last gen hardware and a portable?
So a last gen game? And I assume the 360, PC and PS3 will only get updated HD visuals? Great!

There is no way they will make the PS3, PC and 360 play differently to the Wii DS and PS2 version are they? Too much effort.
Its much easier to tweak 1 version for each system.
It will be COD3 all over again.

No wonder IW wants to buy the rights to COD. Treyarch are making the COD franchise look bad.

So thor I bet your ass is sore from getting reemed by playing 50 person matches. Thats like trying to fit 50 clowns in a car. Looks funny, but really isn't that funny.

Agreed.

6 platforms means it won't be as focused and special as COD4. Sure, COD3 was decent and this can also be fun but I'll skip this Teryarch COD and will wait for Infinity Ward's COD.

7.1 - What?
Im not sure if they are, but they simply could have updated the engine. COD4 looks great. If you think COD4 doesn't, then you have to be blind. Besides, COD5 isn't being made by IW.

This is even more of a bad sign that COD5 will suck. First it's going back to WW2 (please leave that war alone now its over and done with) and now it's releasing on 6 platforms!? That will just even hinder the game because the developer has to divide their attention and not focus on one platform.

9 - Okay...
...so apparently I'm the only person in the world who's still interested in WWII shooters?

That's cool. Don't worry Treyarch, you still have one customer. Just make the single player longer than 5 hours, please.

No, But check out Brothers in Arms. Call Of Duty was reveled because it made such a huge and amazing leap to modern times, now it's a HUGE step backwards. Would you wanna start with a HD tv and go backwards towards a tube TV? Lol no.

9.2 - False analogy...
Did Total War take a big step backwards by going back to the Roman era after starting with the Warring period in Japan? No..

Not all of us like modern shooters, and some of us hate them. I like the limitations of WWII weaponry, it makes the game a little more believable.

(I games like Resistance and Halo for the story, but hate the multiplayer because of the silliness of the weapons. Gimme a Garand or Kar98 any day.)

I will check out Brothers in Arms, though, thanks for the tip.

I'm in agreement with everyone else.

Call Of Duty blows without IW at the helm, I really hope they buy the rights soon.

10.1 - You Know What
Part of me thinks they haven't yet on purpose so Treyarch can make them look even better. But then again I'm quite cynical

EDIT:@ Below. True but I just mean it doesn't hurt that the "B Team" makes a dubious choice of setting & doesn't quite put out games of your caliber

IW would have to crank out a new COD every year if it wasn't for Treyarch, keep that in mind.

Uh cause COD4 was a GOOD game. Can't wait til this one releases and it's more like "Our significant userbase has nearly dropped in half since last year"

16 - Interesting...
...COD3 was actually an improvement over COD2 its just that the WWII theme was getting tired. However, if COD5 can bring the feel of COD4 into a WWII setting and actually come up with a good single story mode then I for one will give it a good hard look.

COD4 has set a benchmark for on-line gaming that is going to be hard to beat however, its single player campaign felt rather flat even though it had some genuine highlights. Lets give COD5 a chance as a single player game before we dismiss it completely.

Well to be fair, COD4 made a new benchmark for online console gaming, not online FPS in general.

Don't get me wrong, I love COD4, but I'd like to see something that looks more like the immense battles of the BF series, with the great storyline and graphics of COD4.

BF2 is still miles ahead of COD4 in terms of in game options, map sizes, etc... Hell, BF1942 is still ahead of COD4 in terms of options.

16.2 - As I said...
...COD4 set a new benchmark for on-line gaming however, why did IW package it with such a terrible lobby system?????????

This is how I would rate some aspects of COD4:
----------------------------- -----------------
Single Player Campaign: 7/10
Too short and only a couple of highligts
prevent it from being totally forgettable.
Multiplayer: 9/10
Moments of sheer brilliance that requires
the utmost of skill brought down to earth
by perks that rely on players having no skill
what so ever. Sniping is also far too easy
as the maps are too small and gravity, wind
and humidity have no effect.
Multiplayer Lobby System: 4/10
- No ability to exclude maps like you could in
COD2.
- No ability to select from a list of current
games being played.
- No ability to search for games based on
selection criteria.
- Annoying feature of being returned to the same
game you just quit again and again, and again...
The COD4 lobby system feels last gen and is only
slightly better than the one released for GTAIV
on-line play.

6 systems... and 6 reasons why the game will be crap.

1) It's treyarch and not IW. OK, I know Treyarch aren't terrible, but they aren't IW.
xm15e2s summed it up perfectly "I loved COD 2, liked #3, LOVE #4"
So he loved all the IW games but only liked the treyarch game.
But not only is COD5 Treyarch but...

2) ...they have to get the game ported across 6 systems! IW only had to worry about 3. Therefore this game will be generic. They aren't going to make 6 different games. The core game will have to run the same on all systems. Which brings me onto point...

3) The PC, 360, and PS3 are going to get a crappy last gen experience. Treyarch aren't going to create a whole separate COD5 that uses long draw distances, physics or destructable environments. The high end version will have to share the same small maps, layouts and they can't have different physics because it will change the way the game plays, and if that happens then they'll have to re-balance the high end version... at the end of the day - too much effort.
Chances are the high end version will merely have a higher poly count, better lighting and will be HD. Rubbish.

4) Wii owners will have to share a PS2 port, because it is more cost effective to have a Wii/PS2 version sharing character models, then it is to have a PS3, 360, PC version, and a separate Wii version, and a separate PS2 version AND a separate DS version.

5) Tacked on Wii-mote controls. One game for 6 systems. Are they really going to build the Wii version from the ground up around the controls? No.

6) Which finally brings me to controls. Balancing a game and getting it to play right is a challenge, but it's easier when every system has the same input method. COD5 will have dual analogue, mouse keyboard, wii-mote and stylus input. And not just all those inputs but they will have to balance the multiplayer side of the game for each system and for each input method. Even IW would struggle at that. How can you achieve a AAA experience when you spread a game this thin. Or do Treyarch have thousands of developers?

I can't see this game being anything but a disaster.
I'd like to be surprised, but realistically.... ...nah.

I'm one of the few people who hated COD4 and especially the multiplayer...I doubt COD5 will be as critically acclaimed but I may personally like it better but then again I'd get the Wii version if any for better controls(in my mind) but we get well outdated muddy ps2 style graphics....uh....I'll probably pass....
