IGN reviews Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection

If you haven't checked out any of the Metal Gear Solid titles before, and are slightly curious about the franchise before the final chapter is released on June 12th, The Essential Collection is a great way to quickly catch up on what you've missed. For thirty dollars, you're receiving three classic action titles, which is a great value. However, if you have played or own the previous titles (especially the two remakes on the PS2), you might be hard pressed to justify why you need to run out and collect this set.

Honestly, this collection is for people who want to get MGS4 and catch the whole story before it comes.

I'm wondering...I have Subsistence, but no other MGS games. I'm not very interested in the bonus features though, and probably won't miss the original Metal Gear games. Should I trade it in, and buy this collection? Or should I find Substance used and wait till the original is on PSN?

The funny thing Is that IGN gave MGS1 on PSX 9.8, MGS2 9.7 and
MGS3 9.6 (Subsistence was given 9.8 for the added 3D camera). Now why the hell does this collection recive a 8.8? It's clearly a 10.0

I agree with that score. They are fine games, but they really should have converted MGS1 to PS2 format. Last night there were bidding wars on eBay for PSOne memory cards. I got one for $7 where earlier they went for 99 cents and no one wanted them.

Also, they should have included the second disc for MGS3 that had the original Nintendo MGS game and multiplayer.

It's funny, I played the Metal Gear Solid on the Gamecube "Twin Snakes", I borrowed my cousins Metal Gear Solid 2 and beat it, and I bought Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence

Kind of a weird way to experience the epic storyline of Metal Gear Solid, but the point is I understand most of the storyline and I am sweating bullets waiting for MGS 4!!!

i've owned alot of MGS's but the only one i beat completely was MGS2.

even though MGS4 is my most anticipated game this year, i have to admit i don't remember much about the story at all.

i remember the gameplay though......and that's what got me fiending for MGS4.

im prolly get this cause just for the collecter reasons ive really stocked up on alot old games as of late since ps2 games have really droped in price or im jsut getting lucky finding really good deals on games got all 3 prince of persia for like 20dollars and all 3 gta's for like 20 bucks two lolz i have mgs 2 and 3 but ill take this set too lolz

Its a shame about the first MGS game needing a PS1 memory card and being on PS1 disks, why not put a little time into it and port the Gamecube remake (twin snakes) onto the PS2 and release that in the package instead, it would make the package a really must buy for some just to play that game.

IGN idiot users hating on the games for not being 9.0 or over, or the ever popular "I wanted this game so badly, but now it sucks to me even tho i haven't even played it, all cuz of one guy's "low" score" guy.
