Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 Final Impressions by IGN

IGN writes: "World Soccer Winning Eleven 9 on Xbox was, and still is, one of the greatest football games to ever hit store shelves. It played like football, moved like football, pretty much everything in Winning Eleven 9 looked and felt like the original article. It didn't have the glitz and the glamour of the EA Sports alternative but in the way of purely authentic football fun, there was simply no equal. The series' first effort on next-gen consoles (which, at the time, was only Xbox 360) was solid but couldn't compare to what the gaming public had seen prior. Winning Eleven, like all franchises, had to go through some growing pains before making another run at the cup".

1 - since when did
pro evo become more popular on xbox
than on playstation.the first 360 outing was
far from being at par with the old gen versions.
and the new version still has some catch up to do.
even seabass admitted this.

He means the original Xbox, not the 360 version.

You might want to read it again?

2 - ign where one of the sponsors of pro evo 2008
This is why this game scored so high regardless of the lack of content, poor next gen graphics when in gameplay mode, broken online mode and game play problems (dodgy physics and hopeless keepers not to mention frame rate problems)

I used to buy pro evo every year but traded my 2008 copy in for fifa in December. never thought this would happen but im glad i did and after the poor pes 6 (360) and now this i believe Konami just don't care any more and have got lazy. I reckon they think they can milk the public regardless and i for one will not be buying the next iteration unless Konami make a massive turn around. Tired of being let down this gen.

2.1 - I agree...
... same here. I used to be a big fan but Konami stopped caring, didnt listen to the fanbase, and it's a disgrace their still charging fullprice for such a poor product.

They should just admit this is below their standards, say 'sorry', and promise to make the very best possible game for the coming winter.
And I hope that this time they will not release it untill it's GREAT.
They shouldnt bother bringing out yet another crappy release.

3 - Been playing this game on the PC for a while now...
... and having played Pro Evo 5 on a daily basis for over 2 years, PES2008 is extremely disappointing, gameplay-wise.

The AI blatantly cheats, the keepers are absolutely useless, your teammates are IDIOTS, and the shooting is alot crappier than ever before.

To me, it looks OK, not great, but I'm not demanding about graphics as long as the gameplay is good (which it isnt, in this game)

The new commentary was needed, but it's too limited and you keep hearing the same lines over and over and over and over again.

This is the 2nd year in a row that Konami has released a very poor and disappointing PES/Winning Eleven. I cant even believe they are still charging full-price for this product, cause they should be ashamed of this effort.

I really hope PES2009 will right all the current wrongs, but if I'm brutally honest, I'm affraid it will be another disappointment.

Konami doesnt listen to the fanbase (why are the penalties STILLLLLL crap!? Where's the coin-toss? Where's the Premier League licenses? Where's an improved Master League? Why is the online still horrible? Why are the graphics still based on the old engine? etc etc...)

Gameplay-wise, PES5 is still the best football game. And even that game wasnt perfect and had some serious flaws.

Dont get me wrong, I LOVE PES5... but you'd think they would have improved on it by now... yet instead the gameplay has turned worse. Such a shame.

Winning Eleven is still miles ahead of Fifa series. Even though Fifa improved a lot for 2008, it is still way too slow and sluggish compared to winningeleven/pes. I have played soccer competitively most of my life and and winning eleven feels more like soccer. People may not like it if they play it on a 360 controller, because it was made for the dualshock in the ps2's early years.

I own the PS3 version of PES 2008 and I must have admit this latest installment is not that great, and thats very dissapointing considering the position of PES as the ultimately supreme king of soccer games. The latest version on both the PS3 and the 360 simply does match up with the excellence of previous PES titles. Dont get me wrong though, it's still a very good game still PES 2008 as it's essentially very enjoyable to play and I play it now. But there were slightly a bit too much flaws for PES 2008 to be considered an truly excellent soccer game.

However I will still not buy FIFA and even the current FIFA version which I hear is very good does not sway me. Pro Evolution Soccer is still my only soccer game that I play and just hope Konami get it right the next time around.
