Breaking: Clover Studio is Dead

As of today, the studio behind Viewtiful Joe, Okami and God Hand is no more. Clover Studio was shuttered by main shareholder Capcom. At a Board of Directors' meeting was held, and it was decided that Clover should dissolved. The reason? According to the Capcom IR release:

"Clover Studio Co., Ltd. has met the goal of developing unique and creative original home video game software, however, in view of promoting a business strategy that concentrates management resources on a selected business to enhance the efficiency of the development power of the entire Capcom group, the dissolution of Clover Studio Co., Ltd. has been raised and passed at a Board of Directors' meeting."

I own Viewtiful Joe, Viewtiful Joe 2, Okami, and God Hand (the last two of which I'm still in the midst of playing). Clover Studios was one of those gaming divisions that I'd probably purchase a product from blindly, so strong was my faith in their work. Sorry to hear about this; it's always a shame when the biggest money-maker isn't the most artistic or best designed game, but the ones that appeal to the masses :(

Psychonauts, Beyond Good & Evil, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, God Hand, Ico, SotC . . . how do these games just go unadopted? What are people playing instead?

3.1 - Its all about appeal.

Sadly its all about who the game appeals too. All of the games you listed are hailed as "great games that no one is playing".

The funny thing is that even though I have been told that these are great games, I have only played three that you have listed.

Another problem is that the "hype" isn't there. "Hype" sells! Even if the game sucks! Look how many copies of the original Killzone sold off of hype alone. I can admit that I fell for it!

i think most of us longed for creative and original titles, but the sales number just isn't big once these games are released. it's amazing how games like WWE wrestling rake up the huge dough everytime it's released. nothing against wrestling games in general, but it's still the same game with updated graphics and storylines. i blame the marketing department for this mishap.

It's true. High cost of gaming alone is enough to prevent any but the bravest from taking a risk and making something new/refreshing/innovative. Add to that the fact that the games that ARE new/refreshing/innovative either aren't marketed properly, or given a chance, and it's easy to see how this happens.

The whole reason I became a Sony fan in the firstplace was because that was where I found such titles. Now the industry's becoming more and more conglomerates and licenses (stupid EA). It's sad to watch.

I think they're just being absorbed by Capcom. They just don't have their own devision and studio anymore, if I'm understanding things correctly. As such, no more original IPs from them, and instead, they have to work on whatever game the Higher-ups want. They've basically lost their autonomy and freedom of design/creation.

going to happen.they will be absorbed back into capcom just like sega had a lot of separate teams.then they were pulled back in.you get a chance to show your stuff.and they did.am2 from sega is the only team i know of that still has autonomy.they keep making hits.but they do stick with what sells.i wish some of you got to play the ps2 MACROSS game they made.i love robotech,but it detroys the old ones and the new games based on the series.kevmac83,your right on the money.and beyond good and evil was one of the best zelda like games ever made.still have it.won't sell it.

Nope, Clover Studio was one of Capcom's dev studios. It was born in 2004 just after capcom closed the Tokyo Studio down (the one behind the Chaos Legion fail)
Capcom is just lame. They should just quit milking their boring franchises like RE, Street Fighter, and DMC. Those games were good on the first place, but now they just keep releasing not so new follow ups over and over., instead of promoting creative studios.
