"Crysis is the Nail in DirectX10's Coffin"

During his review of Crysis on PC, Gameplayer writer Ben Mansill goes into detail about the difference in playing the game between DX9 and DX10 - as you can tell from the quote, it's not great news.

I doubt it. It's been proven that there's no huge differences between DX10 and DX9 in visual fidelity. It's mainly slightly different lighting, including light beams, and atmospheric effects in Crysis' case. All of which you can enable with some tweaking of the game files in XP. Despite this, Crytek still claims for the absolute best graphics, you still need DX10. According the Tweakguides however, this is pretty much just slightly better blur effects. The differences pretty much negligible.

5 - Crysis...My thoughts

Yes, I have Crysis and you know what, I thought I had a computer that would handled very nicely! But since I am running Vista, this has proven to be very wrong.

My current setup is very nice to say the least.

Custom built,

QuadCore
2g ram
500g hd
TWO 8800gts 640mb cards
Dual monitor set up, but under sli, one 22" Chimei monitor.

This game may be something sweet under XP, but under Vista, it is almost pointless to run it. If you are anything like me, graphics mean everything. I don't want to play this game if it is going to look....just ok!

I have been able to play the game on high settings at 1440 x something something.

It plays fairly at this level, of course with no AA on! Turn this on and it will chug!

I have seriously thought about dual booting xp so I can run this game nicely.

Vista is not a gaming OS, not now anyways! Once there is hardware about 2x better than what is out now, the games will be able to reach the same level of performance that XP gives us.

This really is a bummer though. I like Vista, as I use it on my desktops, my laptops and so on. It is not for gamers but for people who are running less demanding apps.

As for the Game of Crysis, what I have played is freaking awesome! Shooting down trees is a blast! There are a lot of touches that I love about this game.

The Koren fighter jets flying around, the nice touches that really make this shine. Turn on the strength and punch a wall down. The physics are awesome. Blow up a building and the building will fall. Knock down the walls and the build will collapse! Freaking awesome.

The Story is pretty darn awesome as well. I am only a few levels in right now but I fell like I am playing a game of Predator (Arnold = Freaking awesome)!

Just one mans opinion. I may have to pop in another drive and do some dual booting!

Crysis run much better under XP and DX9, you'll miss out on some effects but the differences are rather minor. In other words DX10 isn't worth the trouble with DX9 stilllooking totally awesome with great performance to boot.

NVIDIA_Roy: Simply put - DX10 can do two tasks: 1, is reproduce existing effects more simply, 2 produce more sophisticated effects. DX10 is complex, new and we are at the beginning of our learning curve with it. Please remember that it took 2 years from the introduction of DX9 to the first game, Far Cry by the way. It's been just 1 year since DX10 was introduced. So, as we get more familiar with it we will see both performance increases and better and deeper use of features. Right now we are pleased that people are noticing the DX10 improvements. "

ATI released 9700 in 2002 and the first real DX9 game Far Cry came in 2004

Sure u can say pcs are always superior but consoles are more mainstream.pick it up. Play it. And,games look the same on your neibours console. There isnt a need for a game like crysis ,now.but hey,we all got our preferances. But i dont think this game will sell well.by the amount of work they put in,mite even make a loss

Don't worry, it's not like its going anywhere like the title of the article almost implies. Newer versions of Direct X have always ultimately performed worse than it's predecessors when it comes down to raw frames per second. That fact plus the fact it can only run on an OS that uses more system resources, it would only makes sense that it would not entitle better frame rates. They just offer other things in return, typically graphic improvements. Not sure why people are making such a big deal out of the performance loss this time around. DX10 is just having a rough time because the graphical improvements aren't nearly as obvious as previous generations, or they might even hardly be there. Microsoft DID emphasize often that the point was to remove limitations for future hardware. Very future hardware that is.

Strife Lives made a comment that is why he loves consoles and I have to agree! In my book consoles are the better gaming system.

Simple, you buy the game, put it in and play. Every time I pick up my controller I do not have to worry it the game is going to run well or if I need to upgrade.

I may be simple, but I don't like the whole pc set up for gaming. While I can see if you are the HARDEST OF THE HARDCORE pc gaming may be up your alley. I mean you can mod and download mods and etc. You can tweak everything.

Personally, I just want to stay simple.

Plus, while my Quadcore system with sli 8800gts 640mb cost me over $2000, I am lucky I work on it 24/7.

My consoles range from $300 to $600 and that is a big savings.

DirectX is no going any where so not need to delay it. I will just leave my consoles to do the gaming...but I may still dual boot for Crysis and other MUST HAVE pc titles.

Also, Crysis may look amazing, it isn't the best looking game out there! The Title, in my book, belongs to Uncharted, Drake's Fortune! That is the most amazing game I have every played! BAR NONE!

PC gaming still rocks for me. Though consoles are starting to show comparable features especialy ps3.

PC game prices are 10 bucks less for alot of multi plats and they look better on the right pc. Still has the best online and mods too.

Uncharted's art direction may look better then crysis' but crysis' has the better AA, physics, etc. IMO. Uncharted fauna/flora < Crysis fauna/flora. I seen jaggies in Uncharteds leaves and crysis trees can be torn down by gunfire /drool.

There is no way Uncharted look better than Crysis. I have both and the texture quality between Uncharted and Crysis is a world a part. At high settings in DX9 mode Crysis run at a smooth 25-35 fps and still look A LOT sharper than Uncharted.

Jeez people, don't you realize the PC always is comparatively weaker earlier in the console life cycle?

As time goes the PC becomes more impressive do to the fact that it constantly evolves month by month, rather than 5+ year jumps like consoles.

So yeah DX10 is ho-hum now, in a couple years the PC will have stuff that will blow even the PS3 away.
