Doom box artist passes away

While id Software's classic first person shooter Doom was a huge hit mostly on the game alone it didn't hurt that the box cover artwork for the game was incredible as well. Last month, the artist for the box art, Don Ivan Punchatz, died at the age of 73.

5 - Rock on man...
From the last paragraph:

In his obituary on the Spectrum Fantastic Art web site, there is a quote from him saying id offered him a flat fee or a percentage of the game's profits for his work. He took the flat fee (which was actually lower than his normal fee) but soon afterward realized his mistake, saying, ""So how was I to know this thing called Doom would make a jillion smackers?"

- Holy crap man, I'd feel like a tool if I was him. Definately shoulda hired an consultant on that to figure out what his projected earnings could have been lol. Oh well.

I really enjoyed the DOOM box art, let alone the game itself. It gave me a sense of nostalgia everytime I looked at it.

This guy was an awesome artist. I still remember that cover being one of the most memorable video game covers of my youth. Even today, I think anyone who is worth their salt can recognize it as being iconic in nature.

R.I.P., dude... you will live on in our hearts and minds.

Back then when I was much younger, I would have made a silly statement about him being 73 yrs old and it was about that time anyway. However, being that my dad is at his mid 60s, I realized that there's still a lot of living to do, even at 73. So it's still a sad lost.
