Borderlands vs. Fallout 3: An Apocalyptic Debacle - Resume Play

Resume Play's Nathan Grabowski writes "The reason I feel so compelled to discuss this with you all is that I see Borderlands as being dramatically different from Fallout 3. Yes, as I've stated, they are in the same 'post apocalyptic' setting (though not really. BL is set in Pandora, not Earth). The genre is FPS RPG (That's a lot of acronyms, ffs), but it is the subgenres of the games that really define it. Fallout 3 has elements of exploration, adventure, and even survival. Borderlands is an arcade-like shooter, built "From the ground up" for multiplayer action. Multiplayer, people. It features RPG elements found in a lot of classic and popular computer RPGs such as Diablo and even WoW (There is pvp, pve, epic loot, random generated loot, character classes, skill trees, different color categories for items, etc). Borderlands looks hectic and fun, with action taking the lead and story / variety of quests taking the back seat. Fallout 3 could arguably almost be defined as the opposite. People criticize this as 'slow pacing', but I consider it an entirely different type of play."

Oh the choices. If only I could get both Borderlands and Game of the Year Edition. Although to be fair, I would have to pick Borderlands...BUT ONLY because I've already beaten Fallout 3 once.

1.1 - I hear you
It's a serious choice to make. I think I will be getting Borderlands for the same reason, but I've been waiting for Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition since they announced it. All that juicy DLC that I didn't get to try before! (PS3)

Fallout 3 is still the best RPG of this generation. Mass Effect 2 may change that but that still is no excuse to miss out on F3. A lot of immersion, an awesome battle system (VATS), and just the exploration of the game will leave people with the most memorable moments you can have with an RPG. Sure the animation and characters models are lacking, the ending is terrible, and its also one of the buggiest games out there, but thats to be expected with a Bethesda game :P

I didn't really like Fallout 3 much, but I'm looking forward to Borderlands. Opinions are fun!

For me it's Borderlands,

1. I like the art style
2. I like co-op
3. I just couldn't get into Fallout 3 and I truly tried to like it, but it just didn't work for me. Borderlands seems to be more of a shooter and more action packed because of it, so hopefully this will get added to my RPG category since it only has 2 games in it (Mass Effect and Folklore)

Fallout 3 absolutely blew me away when I first played it, never played RPG game previously.

Borderlands never had my attention until the "Borderlands less boring than Fallout 3 article"

I am a little unsure of the drawing design, but great gameplay always overshadows graphics, so its going to be interesting.

On the other hand, the "Game Industry" needs games to be better than previous games of the same genre, adding something (or many things) not done before. So hopefully Borderlands is better than whats before it, which means Borderlands is really up for GOTY talks.

I brought Fallout3 and played about an hour before I took the disk out and never played again. Gameplay sucked. I am a huge RPG fan and Fallout3 fell flat. Game couldn't decide if it wanted to be fps, tps or RPG. It was overhyped just like GTA IV. At least, I finished the GTA IV. Nevertheless, Oblivion was pretty enjoyable though.

I am very interested in Boarderland. It looks like FPS with RPG elements and gameplay looks smooth.

By the way, Demon's Souls is the best RPG this generation for me. Mass effect #2 and valkyria chronicle after that.

Maybe next time Bethesda will do the right thing and make Fallout: New Vegas a co-op game!

Fallout 3 GOTY was $39.99 at Target on sale this morning. Grab it as soon as possible if you havent played it. I bought it for the PS3. Bought the normal Fallout 3 on Steam but my tablet sucks.

I agree with you GamerPS360 somewhat, the gameplay didn't suck, but I just couldn't get into it. I played for an hour and took the game out and sent it back to gamefly the same day. It was boring, slow, and I just couldn't enjoy any of it other than the VATS system.

2 - I do love me some Fallout 3
It's a fantastic game. I don't think that Borderlands will have that immersion factor or as much environmental depth, but just the same, I'm quite excited.

In all honesty, the only really similarities I see is setting and genre. Other then that there different. Yes there both FPS/RPG mixes, but Fallout was a different blend then Borderlands looks. Fallout was like Oblivion, while Borderlands shares more similarities with games like WoW, skill tree's and class's and such.

Agreed 100 Percent. That's the point I'm trying to make.

One is single player and the other is 4 player co-op. In my eyes, there is no comparison here.

I agree. Yet, people have compared / still compare. That is the entire point of the article.

Indeed, but I'll have to wait till Friday, when I get paid, to get it. At least it gives me time to read reviews and watch videos to see if it's still worth getting it.

Fallout 3 is in a league of its own, I've just finished watching the gametrailers review of borderlands and I cannot help but feel this game deserves 7/10 at most. Whilst Borderlands has a nice co-op feature and a huge array of arsenal I just feel fallout does more as a game and as an experience. The lack of story and interaction with NPC's makes borderlands that little bit less interesting.

I still don't understand what Borderlands has to do with the apocalypse. Did humanity leave earth because of some kind of apocalypse or something?

I'm probably going to buy Borderlands, but it is definately not as well reviewed as Fallout 3, now that I see reviews coming out. From what I have been reading, Borderlands is an ok FPS & ok RPG, but not exceptionally great at either. Fallout 3 is a great RPG with an ok FPS engine - which did win GOTY.
