Top 13: Games We've Cel-Shaded

GOONL!NE writes: "We couldn't be more excited for Borderlands. Every new screenshot, video, or behind-the-scenes only makes us wonder if our attempt to break into Gearbox and steal a copy could be successful. Of course, we wouldn't be anywhere near as impatient if the game has stuck with its original look.

We discussed the turn-around here, but that got us thinking; what games would fit the Cel-Shading style? Armed with a ton of screenshots and a half eaten manual of Photoshop, we set out to see which of these 13 games look best when we mess with them. Just click the links to see them fullscreen."

man,.. if they really want to write a cel-shaded graphic article.. at least hire a Vector artist to do remake those photos rather than just doing a cheap photoshot filter.

That's what I thought when I saw this too. Is there really no standard of quality in the articles on here?

Actually it is raping them in PS.
Wanna do it yourself? You'll need Photoshop, some tuts from the net and free time on your hands. And voila, you have one screenshot cellshaded. Want more? Suuuure, just repeat. If you're clever enough you would save actions and just one-click-cell-shade them.

Slow news day, huh?

And no. This isn't about how those games would've look cell-shaded because making those games demands different art approach than other type of games. Cell-shaded titles aren't made by as*-raping the conventional styles of them. Come on...

All of those pictures are disgusting to look at.

Personally, unless cel shaded graphics really bring out something artistic in a game, it should NOT be utilized.

Okami = Good use of Cell Shade.

Borderlands = Not so much.

I actually liked celshaded:

ODST
LBP
Batman:AA

I also think Fallout 3 could have benefited from a slight visual alteration, not full-blown cel-shading, but slight changes in color and sheen because the environments looks so bleak and unappealing.

The problem is that if they were cel shaded, they would look nothing like that. They just threw on the "Poster Edges" filter and called it a day.

@ThatArtGuy

Your username matches perfectly with the topic of this convo.

I agree with what you're saying. The rest of the game may have looked like crap. But that one particular image of ODST looked pretty cool.

7 - "in fact, to our knowledge, there hasn’t been a cel-shaded racer yet, or at least not one that’s any good. "
Auto Modellista.

Anyways, this article is pretty stupid. They didn't even try... Anybody could do this in a few minutes.

They should at least get someone who knows how to actually use photoshop instead of using a cheap filter.

Only one I even think might work in a game is grand turismo. The rest are very mono-tone and confusing.

I think some of these games look nice in a cel-shaded way. But if they were to be like this they would totally look different because not much has been done in these versions. So I would be happy to see developers make games with this artistic view. Because it would look like 2D and a comic at the same time which would be pretty cool.

This reminds me of when I first started using photoshop years ago, and I thought I was artistic by putting stupid filters on everything.
