The Game of the Year Thus Far

Ah, the touted Game of the Year award. Annually, gamers flock to their favorite gaming websites and magazines to find out if the game they would choose is the one which will be held up in the spotlight. And it seems that… well, that’s almost never the case. A lot more gaming fanatics end up complaining about the chosen game of the year than commending the site for its choice. Hopefully, this one will turn out different (especially since it’s not technically the game of the year). Anyway, let’s talk about the game of the year thus far!

The Choice

Alec

And the winner is… Red Faction: Guerrilla! Developers, you can e-mail me and claim your lovely prize of an e-pat-on-the-back! Yay! As a consolation prize for everyone who had the goad to possibly think this would be amongst the nominees, you get a “hey, good job.” Prizes are in the mail, folks.

The Reason

But let’s really get down to why this choice was made (and ignore the question of who I even am to make such a bold claim). Red Faction: Guerrilla, when matched up with the other AAA titles released so far this year, can not only hold its own, it can in some instances blow the competition out of the water. But it’s not impossibly hard, seeing as we’ve only recently found our way out of the summer drought, right? Wrong.

This year, whether you’ll admit it or not, has been absolutely littered with great games to choose from. The difference between these top-tier games and the games that’ll come out this holiday season is just that these releases were spread out a little more, to pepper some flavor all over the year. From January up until now, we’ve had Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter 4, Halo Wars, Prototype, Infamous, and many, many more. Despite being in such a tough crowd, and having so little hype around it, Red Faction has earned its wings as above the rest... so far.

The Weapons

Okay, so maybe you think Resident Evil 5 and Killzone 2 are just unfathomably better than Red Faction on more than one level. Or, heck, maybe you’ve just got the guts to say right out that you’ve never played Red Faction, but you’re sure it’s nowhere near as good as the other shooters of late. Well, both opinions can be respected, but this writer respectfully disagrees.

Red Faction offers an array of weaponry that outclasses any other game of this year’s with panache. Aside from how unique some of the weapons are to the genre, you’ve got to factor in how cool it is to use some of these weapons. One example (the perfect example, in fact) would be that of the Nano Rifle, one of the worst guns you could ever have pointed your way.

Fully upgradeable and very combat-handy, the Nano Rifle is a specialized weapon which fires a cap of nanites (very, very small mechanical bots) which eat away at whatever they touch. And yes, that includes humans. There’s just nothing as awesome as laughing maniacally while your enemies dissipate into nothingness, not even shooting zombies. Okay, maybe it’d be as awesome to laugh maniacally while making zombies dissipate into nothingness, but now you’re just pushing it. Nice try, though, Mr. Redfield.

The Physics

Battlefield: Bad Company may have been released first, but after playing Red Faction it can sometimes feel as though the 2008 FPS was trying its best to be an imitation. Unlike any game before it, Red Faction eschews the common destructible environment which can be found in your everyday shooter, and ramps up the possible damage ten times over. Here you can bring down a bridge the size of the George Washington over in New York, and if you’ve played through the game you will have already recalled the event.

destruction

Unfortunately, having such an amazing feature in a game means that advertisement is going to center around it, sending the gimmick criers abuzz. Partly due to the idea that the physics-based gameplay was a gimmick, and partly due to the advertising department being about as active as the one working on Psychonauts, Red Faction came out limping, rather than swinging, when competing with the likes of Prototype. Why must the beautiful be represented by such ugliness?

The Visuals

Red Faction’s Mars looks stunning, and each town is pretty much distinguishable by the aesthetics. While Dust has the signature bright orange-red glow that anything based on Mars will show, heading out into the Badlands will introduce you to a darker, browner landscape. Just a short drive from there and you’ll find Parker, the town with gray grounds, purple skies, and stars so luminescent that at night it looks like one huge disco club.

In comparison, one might say that Street Fighter 4 packs a stronger punch when it comes to pleasing the eye. Street Fighter 4 isn’t taking a new approach to anything but the series, though, if you think about it. By cell-shading the characters, embellishing shadows, and giving them half a dimension of depth (2.5D), you don’t do anything but distinguish the game from other games in the series. Red Faction distinguishes itself from any other game, movie, or television show with Mars as the planet of emphasis.

The Side Missions

Yes, Batman has The Riddler leading him to dead ends, Infamous has its own thing going on, and Prototype has those completely irrelevant mini games, but Red Faction has side missions all its own. With the theme of its side missions only being challenged by Batman: Arkham Asylum itself, Red Faction makes you legitimately feel like a rogue anarchist out for blood and collateral damage. To be fair, though, Batman: Arkham Asylum’s side missions and hidden Easter eggs are strong examples of fan service, so who wins out in this department rests solely on how much of a fan you are of super heroes.

The Conclusion

At the end of the day, Red Faction takes the cake because it’s so neglected, yet still so great. Marred by the gimmicks of free-roam and destructible environments, you wouldn’t be off base to compare it to that ugly chick in the movies who’s always hot after she’s given a makeover. Red Faction is that chick… with a sledge hammer. For a comparison that the female audience might relate to better, it’s kind of like that one Fallout Boy video when Pete Wentz took off his glasses… I guess.

See you at G3's Game of the Year awards!

This article was my personal pick for Game of The Year Thus Far and is not reflective of the other staff.

I agree. It's one of the most well-made games this gen. Just playing around with the physics engine is endless fun. Unfortunately, like with Batman: AA, it doesn't get the hype or cred it deserves. I sometimes feel like journalists save their 10's for games that are expected to be good. Like GTA, Mario etc. Games like Red Faction: Guerrilla, that are better than what they were "supposed" to be never get tens even though these are the games that deserve it the most.

.... You missed out on some key points that makes a game GOTY like "Story" or "AI" or "Variety" which this game has none of the 3... It's a kinda cool engine. however not 'Everything" is destructible and overall it doesn't even look all that good when compared to plenty of other games this year(KZ2, UC2). It gets outshined in MP by plenty and it is overall not worth 65$. Wait for it to drop to 45 or less and it's worth it.

From the characters to campaign to variety and AI the game was weaker then most. Overall a poor choice for GOTY.

Please tell me you don't think Killzone 2 has a better story and more variety than Red Faction. I mean, shouldn't a GOTY be somewhat unique? Killzone 2 isn't anything unique, just very good. Red Faction has alot more to offer IMO: large sandbox, relatively unique setting and story, interesting array of weapons and vehicles. Certainly Red Faction isn't perfect and it's not as pretty as Killzone, but it does offer a more unique experience.

And what's this crap about it not being worth full retail price? This game is as complete as they come and I would gladly throw down 70$ for it (I only rented it). I'm sure you'd change your tune if it was only on Ps3, though. =D

I do think KZ2 has a better story and much better MP and is all around a more "full" game. That is me though. You can think how you like. As for "Sandbox" thats all it truly is a X by Y square with nothing but sand in the middle and a few scattered paper houses... KZ2 is just a "unique" as halo or any other Sci Fi shooter imo except I like the characters and the graphics are top notch.

As for an interesting array of weapons and such. Try any ratchet and clank game... RF:G is just "ok" I think Dark void looks to be much more unique but I'm still not interested in that either.

For my 2 cents. I feel like last year I got burned on buying full priced games like mirrors edge or condemned 2and getting little to no value in them. I feel that a game like RF should be worth it when it drops to a certain price just like I feel bionic commando will be worth a look once it hits the bargain bin for 20$ On the other hand a game like Modern Warfare 2 would probably be worth more then they are asking... Just kinda how I view games... MW2 will have a solid SP and a Solid MP that will last me a long long time... With Arcade mode and everything else it's a heck of a deal...

As for your only on PS3 comment I have news for you. I hated MGS4. I hated resistance and resistance 2. I hated Folklore. I honestly didn't like KZ2 all that much but I do give it credit for what it has accomplished. I didn't really care for Uncharted but am looking forward to the second one. I loved Ratchet and clank and can't wait for god of War 3. Matter of fact there aren't all that many exclusives on the PS3 that I do like and the ones I do most people scoff at like LAIR and Heavenly Sword. I am a PS3 fanboy but for the most part dislike the exclusives minus LBP and a few others. i like it for what it offers out of the box. So truth be told it's not about it being exclusive. I don't care about that. Matter of fact my 2 fav games this year so far are multi plats. Batman AA and SF4. After that its infamous though. Exclusive or not I will call a duck a duck and RF is a ugly ugly duck imo. When standing up next to so many other games it doesn't hold a candle... My picks for GOTY would be Batman AA, SF4, Infamous and pending how they come out MW2, Dead Space Extraction and Ratchet and Clank a crack in time. Because of the demos I played at comic con and what I know those are high on my list and lets hope they don't disappoint me.

Red Faction is a quality game. That's a fact. Quality is not subjective, only a sense of value and preference are. A large, unique game may not be worth full price to you just like a generic FPS is not worth full price to me. How is an game like Heavenly Sword, that's less than ten hours, worth full price but Red Faction isn't?

"Exclusive or not I will call a duck a duck and RF is a ugly ugly duck imo"

Yeah, I really don't think you're that objective in your rational considering Red Faction is a great game yet you think it's a bargin bin title. Giving credit where credit's due means being objective and you clearly aren't being objective seeing as how you shove that little IMO into that senetence. So, you'll be objective yet you'll only state your opinion of the game? That doesn't make any sense. Allow me to enlighten you. I don't think (IMO) Killzone 2 is a unique game that doesn't offer anything new to FPSs but OBJECTIVELY speaking Killzone 2 is a great game. Now try that again. Red Faction, in your opinion, is a bargin bin title and is just average but OBJECTIVELY speaking it's a great game.

objective - undistorted by emotion or personal bias; based on observable phenomena; "an objective appraisal"; "objective evidence"

I have seen very little appraisal for this game or evidence of it being a great game. Objectively it is run of the mill. IMO it sucks.

By the definition of the word "Objective" as described above means there is no conceivable way to view it objectively. There is no way to look at the game and either like or dislike the color pallet, controls, characters, story, physics or otherwise. it is Impossible to view the game objectively... There will always be some form of bias to any form of media. Otherwise you would need no critics.

Evidence it's a great game? 85% on Metacritic. Sure, maybe not every score on Metacritic is completely accurate but it's a rough ballpark. So, there is my basis for Red Faction being a great game. What was yours again?

Of course a smart dude like yourself understands the difference between "bias" and "preference". I'm not biased towards the Xbox, but I prefer it. So, no, there isn't always some form of bias in the media but there certainly is preference.

There certainly is a way to look at this game objectively. Does it offer a large world to explore with relative variety in the ladnscape? Check. Does it have any form of mulitplayer? Check. Does it offer a creative gameplay mechanic? Check. Good (not great) graphics? Check. Care to dispute any of this? It's fine if you don't like it, but don't try and tell me it's a bad when it's not. Maybe not GOTY but definitely a quality game. End of discussion.

85% to most gamers is not 90% Which most gamers would define as "Not AAA" meaning sub par... True or not most would agree unless it is an exclusive then it will be defended tooth and nail even if it's a bad game. Movies average at about 5/10 on meta critic but that doesn't make them bad but the "gold standard" for games seems to be 90%. i mostly agree with that. 85% is a good enough score but that being said it "Missed the mark" that is renowned by most gamers... Ratchet and Clank Tool of Destruction didn't get 90% but due to me being a huge fan and loving the quirkyness and story and characters and everything I don't mind but would I recommend it to my friends? Not unless they had prior experience or I'd let them borrow it or something to try but I wouldn't say "BUY NAO" like I would with COD4 or Bioshock or something...

My basis for it not being a "Great" game is simply that... it's not that it's a bad game. It's just so so. To me. And "so so" is not worth 65$.

Bias as defined is "inclination towards something; predisposition, partiality, prejudice, preference, predilection" So in breaking this down I see, and correct me if I am wrong, it's a preference... So a Smart guy like me can't really see the difference... If you prefer the Xbox you are biased towards it. Thats perfectly fine and honorable. I am not telling you to buy a PS3 and this argument isn't even about that. You brought consoles into this... The media is biased. They prefer a over b not meaning console but everything else...

There is not a way to look at a game objectively. You can look at a chemical reaction objectively or a car crash or something that is not art. Anything with a value that can be rated(i.e. Games) will be viewed with bias or a preference. i.e. "The xbox 360 version looks better because of a,b,c" is objective where as "RF:G is better then Infamous" is biased...

"Does it offer a large world to explore with relative variety in the land scape? Check."

How much does that world offer? As much as GTA4? or is it more like Tales of the Sun. Too me it offers very little. Just like that one racing game FUEL that just came out. Big world doesn't make it any good if it's bland and repetitive.

"Does it have any form of mulitplayer? Check."

So does Bionic commando and dark sector. They did not make either of those games any more valuable in any way imo(Thats bias).

"Does it offer a creative gameplay mechanic? Check."

Not really creative imo. Crysis did it before and even the first red faction did. as well as the frostbyte engine and other things. It's not new or original however that doesn't make it bad or anything but it's not "Creative"... unless your referring to something else.

"Good (not great) graphics? Check."

If you say so man. I have seen way better of late and I would say "Average" for sure mainly because... I don't feel immersed when I play it or anything.... Bioshock, Batman, infamous. Those games have art and immersion to them that draw me in. RF:G and having everything red makes me feel... I dunno. Nowhere near as aesthetically pleased but this again is bias so to each his own.

So if you want to end the discussion here thats fine. I'm done. I just wanted to put my opinion and not get flamed to Russia and back but thats cool. The game is not bad. Not worth what many other games at the same price are worth to me. Not very great story wise or otherwise. I have my preference... or bias... or however you want to view the words... And you have yours and I salute that. So truly game on bro. I am glad you liked the game. I just didn't find anything in it that clicked with me and don't see the "Value" in it...

well, if i can add my 2$ to this i wll make it simple

I own a ps3 and 360. I got killzone2 based of the hype and vids i had seen i was looking forward to it. I am a big fps junkie and big online junkie to.

I got red faction simply because of its claim " everything being destructable " lots of games have claimed this and failed in my book. its always nice to see a game trying to do something that is really next gen other then better graphics. Now i don't care what they say its doing under the hood its what i see happening on screen that counts.

now, the way i score is quite simple. A good game i will play and finish then at some point it will prob get traded in . An exceptional game i will play finish and keep in my collection. most games that i consider anything less don't even get bought.

Played killzone 2, played the multiplayer.. took it back to the shop for a credit.

Played Red faction and i still have it in my collection. For simple fact that it actually pulled off the destructible environments and it was totally consistent all the way through already makes it stand out in my book.

both had average stories in my opinion but i was more disappointed with killzones because i expected more from it.

I have this game, got it day 1. IMO it is a very well made great to play game. Not many games out so far that are half as good. A lot of people are missing out on this game as it wasn't advertised and if anyone just sees it on a shelf would probably pass it by if they hadn't heard of it before. I would reccommend this game to anyone who likes shooting / open world games.

Yeah, I'm not some oblivious idiot. I gave reasons why it's the game of the year, not reasons why it might not be. Its story and multiplayer aren't its strengths, so it made no sense to bring them up in an article explaining why RF:G is great. Also, I never once said "everything" was destructible. Nor did I imply it. I simply said the destruction physics were better than any other game's, and compared it to the last physics based shooter this generation.

Overall I feel there are many more games where money can be much better spent when buying a game then Red Faction.

From it's bland and incredibly barren and colorless land scape to it's total lack of story and shoddy MP. All it has going for it is a decent physics engine that still doesn't even rival that of games years older... To me it's not even close for GOTY. I am glad you enjoyed it however I feel it's a waste of disc space myself. Heck Battle field BC had a decent destruction engine that coupled amazingly with sound.... The game still sucked.

I know your gonna say something like "You need a million dollar PC to play Crysis" when in reality you really don't. If you have a PC already and a decent monitor youd be surprised how cheap it could be.

Please tell me you are kidding about the physics engine. In no other game can you run around and take out the structural supports of a building and have it come down in a realistic way. BF:BC although was awesome, it just used the cookie cutter approach to destructibility. RFG is completely dynamic. As for Crysis vids. They are actually show dynamic building destruction. It is also using the set piece method. That and if you note the authors comment on the barrel vid. That isn't real time footage.

Then the last vid, it is slightly worse then RFG.

I don't think you have played it >_>

It's not just barrels. I chose mod tool examples because they are the most impressive. It's trees, buildings, cars, rocks and everything. They all break by what material they are made of. The big difference is that in red faction all you have is buildings made mostly of the same stuff and they all break similar and to me it's a gimmick. Kind of like bullet time or fractures "Move ground" stuff... Even so in Red Faction you can have a building being held up miraculously by 1 beam at times and think to yourself "???" I know his reviews are always very anti whatever game he plays but he always makes solid points.

http://www.escapistmagazine...

Doing your research and knowing games is part of being a gamer. What do you think I have not played RF:G or Crysis? Crysis as a game didn't really appeal to me but was impressive none the less. I played the RF demo and told my buddy I disliked it. He made come by and play his copy and I couldn't get through much...

Batman:AA
inFamous

and more than likely will be adding Forza 3, Uncharted 2, MW2, AC2 to this list in the fall and maybe Red Faction as well.

Yeah you raise a good point. The demo just did the game zero justice. Trust me, I though the game was worthless, another free-roam. I got it by default because nothing else new was out and I had to pick a birthday gift lol. Come to find out it's better than any other game I could've chosen. I'd say rent it, give it a better chance. If you don't like it within the first 3 hours, you probably won't want to pay for the full game.

12 - What makes a GOTY?
Seriously it's still a little early to be making claims of what game should be ranked the best of the year. From what i've read here (and there is alot) Red faction Guerilla shouldn't be GOTY.
Wither or not a game brings anything new to the table is irrelevant of how good of a game it is. While Crysis's destruction engine is vastly superior to the RFG, RFG did make it a more of a selling point of the game.
This in my opinion is where the game falls flat, because after a short amount of time wrecking stuff becomes much like grind. When games become about grind then all fun (though people on WOW don't seem to think this) is removed and it becomes more about getting rewards or power ups.
Story shouldn't be a part of consideration when voting for GOTY as most games use a story of making the player wade through repetitive actions and mindless mini-games. Also as with movies all good stories have been done before and most previous GOTY inductees have had questionable or no story at all. (Portal coming straight to mind.)
The GOTY should always be rewarded to the game that moves the industry as a whole forward and becomes a goal for other game developers to strive to achieve. Always play games to be entertained, because if your not being entertained then you should be getting paid for it.
