no they have said that it has maxed out the xbox 360, but will visually be NEARLY the same but during heavy physics scenes will perform better on the PS3 due to its SPU's.

I am hoping that this game will max both the 360 and the ps3 and we will finally, without excuses, all acknowledge that, yes, indeed, the ps3 and 360 are extremely close in real world performance, fanboy spin aside.

commodore, it's because ps3 fanboys want so bad to believe their 600 dollars was well spent. i have a ps3 and i can safely say...it wasn't. so now they just make up myths about their system to justify it. it's really sad actually. everyone that has both consoles knows that graphics are a wash on the two systems. and that, to date, 360 has a few more okay games. and neither system really has any great games. and the games that have been close to "great" are on both systems like bioshock (and bioshock really is just a very dumbed down console version of system shock).

yes, we know that the ps3 cell processor has more cores, but there are other factors in determining over all "power" and capabilities. Like the GPU and the ram.

@kwy, great job calling him out and then citing the reference. something you never see when people pull these "facts" out of their ass. and i agree with you about console gamers really being ridiculous about their obsession with graphics when they must realize consoles don't touch PC. there's also no way crytek is going to achieve crysis quality on consoles. they will have to reduce scale and probably use some other tricks to cut corners

The reason commadore was getting disagrees was because he DID conveniently only tell half of the story. Crytek said that the engine will run better on the [insert console name here] in certain parts, but better on the [insert other console name here] in other parts.
In the end, I think it's fair to say that both versions of the Engine will make some exceptionally nice games.

Thats why I find it hard to believe that this game maxes out both and looks basically the same on both, because PS3 exclusives basically set the bar this gen.

But then maybe Microsoft's studios are just incompetent...

Pacman could max out a Ps3/Xbox360 if the engine running it was optimised poorly enough.

Saying they've 'maxed out the needle' - on either system - is a very different thing to saying they've achieved the best that can be produced with that system. Tightening your code to get that extra 5%, and then another 5%, and then when you think you've done every trick available, finding another 5%, and then maybe 'oh, here's another 3% if i do it this way..' is where the game is. And double that 'squeezing out just a bit more' effect when the hardware is more unfamiliar/esoteric and you're inexperienced with it or anything akin to it...

No company aught to be making comments about "maxing out the needle", unless they add the qualifier 'to our current abilities/experience, and in the engine code we've written as our first attempt on (in the case of the PS3 at least) a completely foreign hardware'.

It might just be because MS doesn't have a lot of devs to begin with compared to Sony. However, Remedy is started really show what the 360 is capable of considering it's supposed to be an open world game, or just a game with a lot of draw distance.

I don't think Rare are what they used to be even though they still give out decent games. Bungie is all about the fun factor and they've delivered on all their Halo games. However I don't see why people never mention Mass Effect, that is an amazing looking game as it's at least on par with Uncharted. Turn 10 looks to be finally stepping up their game in the graphics department and I think it looks great. IMO GT5 looks better but Forza 3 is pretty damn close and it's been only in development for 2 years, amazing.

Anyway, if MS had Sony's developers I'm sure we would see tons of great looking games.

It isn't the devs but MS wanting the games out more quickly that means they don't have the time of Sony devs to max out their machine so well, sadly. Sony having more does add to this but even third party games funded ny MS(like Gar2)don't get the leeway in terms of time that Sony allows developers.

As for people bickering over Crysis2/Crytek and what they said/didn't say about the two platforms-they are third party multi plat devs now and saying or proving one side is superior just isn't going to happen,. is it? Not with install bases being as close as they are and unlikely to dissipate any time soon. Why would they alienate half their market before even releasing a game? They aim for equality and not to optimise for 360 or PS3 so obviously in a compromised situation like this both systems will take a bit of a hit opposed to exclusive games no matter how talented the devs are.

Sirely nobody is trying to say that if Crytek were to make this exzclusively it wouldn't look better on either platform? It would and we all know it. Whatever they say about getting the best from the consoles it won't happen in these circumstances and a very high end compromise is the best any of us can hope for and the fact the 360's architecture should be much closer to what they're used to should give an edge to it during this type of development.

Nothing will be proved either way by all this and to pretend it will when it opposes the aims of the developer is daft, imo. Until a developer has identical teams working on identical products/projects with the express intention of getting the most out of them both without equalisation being an issue(or time) then we just won't know much more.

Crysis was a good enough game back on PC but the draw was definitely it's looks and I don't see anything in the screenshots to suggest C2 will even match the first games looks on console. I don't really see the point of all this just yet-hopefully the gameplay will be great but even though the game will look great I fear it'll still be in the shadow o it's PC predecessors.

EDIT: I'd be WAAAAAAY happier if they got the FR guys cracking using this engine on TS4 if I'm totally frank.

jeseth look at those games and tell me if they had the art of gears of war they would not suck. If those games had the art of Halo even with all the killzone 2 effects they would still suck. But we all know MGS will look good on any system because of the artist involved, no kojima is not responsible for all character designs. Uncharted 1 still has the best 3d hair lighting art period except for FF13's cg. Yet I'm not crazy about their level design.

Simply put it's like wondering why another TV stations saturday morning cartoon line up sucks when compared to GI-joe and transformers back to back, it's the art and the style not the tech. SONY seriously needs to market their platform as a place for artist similar to what apple does. Yet the sad thing about this is artist leave all the time.

it is pretty sad, anytime 2 games look NEAR identical, the delusional PS3 boys cant fathom that the 360 could very well be on par with the PS3 and the PS3 version must have been held back to keep them looking similar.

Considering the lead archeitect of both the Cell and the core has said time and time again that both systems main CPU are pretty damn close, it is not too wild an idea to think that games on both systems can look identical without choking one just to make them both look the same.

I agree and disagree with the first paragraph though because while it may be true that devs may not have enough time to polish up the game, stunning visuals can still be pulled off. Look at the first Uncharted, wasn't that game in developement for 2 years? Not only was it fun to play, but it had stunning visuals and animations as well.

And for the tool that compared Gears 2's "art" to any of Sony's big exclusives. . . they clearly haven't played Uncharted, Resistance, MGS, Killzone, etc. The attention to detail in PS3 exclusives is unmatched.

Some people are just plain biased and can't give credit where credit is due. 360 exclusives are great, especially Mass Effect (wish it was on PS) but PS3 exclusives just have more substance top to bottom. Period.

I think CryEngine has a slight advantage when it comes to lighting. It's a compliment though, that you see PS3 games being compared to this high-tech engine. First it was Killzone 2, and now Uncharted 2. Just goes to show how good the games can look when they're not catering to a multiplatform environment.

Edit:

Now that I look at a few more screenshots, I'd say Uncharted definitely beats this in certain aspects. Namely, Uncharted 2 has higher-poly environments and character models. Some of the models and environments in those CryEngine shots seem pretty low in the poly count.

Being a Pc fanboy I will put my bias aside, I must say I am very impressed with uncharted 2. Plus Crysis is 2 years old but being that crysis is a sandbox game i think it is still the top dog, but uncahrted 2 is very impressive. Not trying to flame either. Hopefully crysis 2 will push the boundries of all platforms. I know they will try.Lucky for me my new roomate has a PS3 so i'll get the best of both worlds. I must say that tyhe PS3 exclusives are very good and just to be compared to top end gaming rigs is a testemnet to the developers and the quality of the games, I still think Good Pc is better but the only console even close is the PS3, and it will only get better.

i don't know how anyone can say that uncharted 2 looks better than this, these pics are with the game engine modded, and screen shots taken at like 2500*1600 then scaled down, so they look perfect, and even without that cryengine 2 polygon count would have to be double that of any console because most console games including kz2 only run at 1280*800 etc( kz2 does not run at 1080p, and neither will uncharted 2)

I guess what I meant to say is that the link I posted is what I found most impressive (which says a lot), and I was trying to say that if they could get all the enemies and models to look like that, in mass scale, as well as make the animation and rigging just as impressive, that'd be amazing. I have the first Crysis but not Warhead yet. I was just remarking on an entire game looking that good, model-wise, because I thought these were shots of mods using the engine, and wasn't sure if the entire in-game renderings equal that the whole time...sorry for the confusion.

The PS3 doesn't support DirectX 9. That's a Microsoft technology. The PS3 uses OpenGL.
