Those were times, really, better times then now. Those classics will never be anymore. Unreal will never be Unreal anymore, Quake will never be Quake like those days and Half-Life will never be like in the 90's. Best gaming time I've ever had.

DAMN F***ING STRAIGHT.

Unreal wasn't perfect from the get-go. It had a lot of problems with bugs and the multiplayer component was very lacking. Not to mention they only supported 3DFX's GLide API at first. But a few patches and a point release later, we had an extremely fun multiplayer complete with built-in bots, numerous gameplay balances and bug-fixes and full support for D3D and OpenGL. Oh, the fun I had with this game. In fact, I got it as a birthday present. Those were the days indeed.

Ah, and Quakeworld. And Team Fortress (the original Quake mod). And Quake 2 CTF. Weapons Factory and Action Quake 2. There were mods coming out of everywhere. And where are they now?

Yup...exactly what I was thinking...Everything had that "never before experienced" sort of feeling. fI'll never forget the first time I started up Unreal on my 'uber-fast' Petium w/MMX...the visuals TOTALLY blew my mind.

And do you remember the A-3D soundcards?...the first mainstream cards to demonstrate true positional audio using only two speakers? (technology which was bought out by Creative Labs, and is now known as their EAX) Again, it takes me back to that first specific moment, when first trying it out in Half-Life. Groundbreaking.

But you're right...as much as I'm loving the games and technology of this gen, that feeling of 'newness' is gone...my guess is likely due to over-sensitization and over-saturation. Because I'm looking at the old Unreal trailers now, and find it hard to believe that it moved me as much as it did back in the day.

Ahh, those were good times indeed.

Whoops, gotta go!...time for my routine geritol dose and arthritis medication. ;)

Return to Na Pali was the best addon ever, a whole new story and U1 was already stunning at that time.

3 - Great idea for an article
Happy Birthday, Unreal Engine. I wish the writer had taken more time to make the article grammatically correct.
