Final Fantasy XI reaches 2 Million active accounts, first growth since 2005

Square Enix has announced that their MMORPG Final Fantasy XI has reached 2 million active accounts for the first time since the game launched back in 2004.

Pretty much the truth .
Sadly they didnt feature pvp from the get go .
As crappy as wow's pvp truly is , especially with it's constant class imbalances , it's presence did marvels .

Plus FFXI is a bit too hardcore for most of WoW's public .

The game is really to hardcore. I played for 3 years and the problem with the game was mainly the party caps. They didn't however fix that with a update which allows you to adjust your level to play with any party. That update came a little to late for me but helped to game out a lot.

the only reason why I have yet to try the game is because I heard at later levels you need a party to level up. Unless you do what the kids in South Park did. Kill millions of low level creeps

They are counting active characters not active accounts...

As most ffxi players probably know. 90% of accounts have 3 or more characters per account. Especially now since another mog bonanza (lottery) was announced.

I'm only estimating this number. I myself have 5 characters and everyone I know has at least that amount. People that really want to win at mog bonanza will most likely have 10-15 characters.

I'm not tryin to put down ffxi as I still play a couple times a week. But there's a HUGE difference between characters and accounts. Their certainly is NOT 2mil ppl playing this game. From what I remember the the active account number is around 500k.

1.5 - This game is so underrated
I did the Zilart missions 1-13 in one day (about 17 hours of gaming). Most fun I have ever had playing a video game in my life. When we finally got access to "sky" I thought that I had ascended to the heavens.

After playing most of the MMO's out there I do truly believe that the best one on the market atm is Final Fantasy XI. It's has incredible balance and crap load of content and despite being a MMO still has the great story lines that final fantasy is known for. The game is also great because of countless little innovations such as being able to level every job on a single character instead of having to make a new one and the sub job system as well.

The major problem here is that Final Fantasy XI is a hardcore experience. The majority of the WoW crowd would not last a month in the game. It requires alot of devotion and a ton of time to get anything accomplished. To alot of people that's something they like but for the casual MMO fan such as the majority of WoW players they are just turned away.

6 - I played FFXI for over 3 years
and I loved every moment of it. I had a DRk 75 PUP 75 subs leveled to 37 and it is an intense game. I just hated having to wait for a party with your seek flag up but there were just so many other things that you could do. I was a Galka and I was actually married in the game. I miss it sometimes but with my girl, job and just responsibility period I could no longer play this game like it is meant to be played.
