GameZone: Dark Sector PC Review

GameZone writes: "When Dark Sector was first revealed in a teaser trailer several years ago, it looked like a next-gen dream: a slick, futuristic sci-fi stealth action game set in space. The game has undergone some major changes since that time. New mechanics have been introduced, and the protagonist's choice of venue has been switched from derelict space stations to Soviet ruins. Rather than relying on fancy technology to get him through, Hayden makes use of a mysterious parasite to utilize superhuman powers in combat. The details of this infection are not nearly as interesting as one might expect, given its frequent repetition throughout the clichéd storyline. At its heart, Aspyr Media's Dark Sector is essentially a third-person shooter. There are a few elements thrown in to give the game some distinction, but this changes the core gameplay almost insubstantially."

I rather enjoyed Dark Sector. Maybe if I'd payed full price for it I'd be less enthusiastic, but I think I got it for around $15 and it was well worth it. 7.5/10 sounds fair.

Sadly to say, I for some reason paid full price for this game as well, day one purchase. However, it's not to say that this game was horrible because it certainly isn't. I had a great time from start to finish with the gameplay. The graphics is awesome for a multiplatform game and reminds me a lot of Gears of Wars.

However what put me off with the game is the ridiculous storyline and script. My God, it has got to be one of the worst storyline I have ever experienced. The script is so damn horrible you would have thought a 7 year old kid wrote it in a day. It's so simple and one-minded. Even when there is a twist in the storyline (if you can call it that) you could care less because the character development is horrible and so you really don't care! Simple as that. The ending was also super lackluster, just like the entire storyline. It matches it.

You can enjoy Dark Sector provided you don't pay anymore than $20 for it. The gameplay is also similar to Gears of Wars with the cover and whatnot. Just don't go into the game expecting a good story, or anything even remotely close to that. Such shame because this game could have been something....

The script did suck. It's not that the story they were trying to tell was that bad, it was standard action game stuff, it's just that they had a lot of unfinished bits in there. Like they had a much broader story planned, but had to cut a lot back late in the game.

For example, that chick you meet half way through the game. Who the hell was she? Hayden seemed to know her and you kind of get an idea what their relationship might have been, but really, they never said who she was in any clear terms. Same goes for a lot of things. The story felt half finished.

Fortunately, story is low on my list of priorities for action games.

Asgard. But yeah, I hear it's solid. That's on my list of rainy day games. I'll probably pick it up during the summer draught.

Did they really just copy and paste the review for the xbox 360 version? Ugh.
They mention it runs at 60fps, on a pc you don't know. Every configuration is different.
I want a real review for the pc copy. I want to know if there are better visuals, and any gameplay additions. No mention of controls for keyboard and mouse. This is lame!
The original game was great though. I really enjoyed it.
